This study tested for behavioral and hormonal reactions of young men to brief social encounters with potential mating partners. Male college students were randomly assigned to engage in a short conversation with either a young man (male condition) or a young woman (female condition). Participants provided saliva samples before and after the conversation, completed a battery of psychological measures after the interaction, and had their behavior rated by their conversation partners. Salivary testosterone (T) increased significantly over baseline levels in the female condition only, though differences between conditions were not significant. In addition, change in T was significantly correlated with the degree to which the female confederates thought the male participants were trying to impress them. These behavioral ratings, in turn, were correlated with the participants' ratings of the female confederates as potential romantic partners. Results were generally consistent with the hypothesis that human males may exhibit a behavioral and endocrine courtship response that is similar to that observed in males of many nonhuman vertebrate species.  相似文献

In humans, testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), estradiol (E2), estrone (E1) and cortisol (C) bind to the serum proteins sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), albumin (Alb) and corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG). Equilibrium dialysis is considered to be the “gold standard” for measuring the free concentrations of these steroids but is technically difficult and not widely available. Based on a mathematical model of the 5-ligand/3-protein binding equilibria, we developed a novel spreadsheet method for calculating the free and bioavailable (free + Alb-bound) concentrations of each steroid in terms of the total steroid and protein concentrations. The model uses 15 association constants KSHBG-X, KAlb-X, and KCBG-X (X = T, DHT, E2, E1 and C) that have been estimated from a systematic review of published binding studies. The computation of the free and bioavailable concentrations uses an iterative numerical method that can be readily programmed on a spreadsheet. The method is illustrated with six examples corresponding to young men (YM), old men (OM), obese men (Ob M), young women (YM), pregnant women in the 3rd trimester (Preg T3) and oophorectomized women on oral conjugated equine estrogens (CEE). The resulting free hormone concentrations for YM and YW fall within the normal references ranges obtained by equilibrium dialysis for all five hormones. The model also accounts for the competitive binding effects of high estrogen levels on the free T levels in Preg T3. This novel spreadsheet method provides a “user-friendly” approach for estimating the free concentrations of circulating sex hormones and cortisol in men and women.  相似文献

Monogamous male birds typically allocate less effort to courtship and more to parental behaviour than males of polygynous species. The seasonal pattern of testosterone (T) secretion varies accordingly. Monogamous males exhibit a spring peak in plasma T followed by lower levels during the parental phase, while males of polygynous species continue to court females and maintain T at higher levels. To determine whether testosterone underlies the trade-off between mating and parental effort, we treated male dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) with exogenous T and compared the reproductive success (RS) of T-treated males (T-males) to that of controls. T-males had lower apparent annual RS than controls, probably because elevated T reduced parental care. Nevertheless, annual genetic RS of the treatment groups was similar because (i) T-males suffered fewer losses in genetic RS due to extra-pair fertilizations (EPFs), and (ii) T-males gained more genetic RS through their own EPFs. This is the first hormonal manipulation of an avian phenotype shown to have influenced male RS through EPFs. Together with other studies, it suggests that testosterone may have mediated the evolution of inter- and intraspecific differences in allocation of reproductive effort to mate attraction and parental care.  相似文献

Summary The levator ani muscle of the rat was examined by correlated light and electron microscopic morphometry. Corrections were made for shrinkage, compression, and differences in stretching. Age, castration, and subsequent testosterone treatment do not affect the fiber number, the filament lattice, and the size of the filaments and myonuclei. The fibers in intact growing males increase in width and length. The number of myonuclei rises, although relatively slower than the amount of contractile material.Castration, performed at six weeks, partially suppresses fiber growth. The increase of mean fiber width is more strongly inhibited than that of fiber length. Myonuclear multiplication is almost completely arrested in castrates, and the amount of contractile material per myonucleus is lower than in intact males of equal age.Testosterone, administered at about two months following orchidectomy, highly accelerates the transversal fiber growth, but fiber length is not significantly influenced. Between the fourth and seventh day of treatment a marked increase in myonuclear number occurs.Analysis of the frequency distribution of the individual fiber widths, which is logarithmic-normal in intact males, revealed that the hormonal influence on the net result of protein anabolism and catabolism markedly differs in the various fibers of a single muscle.With the technical assistance of Tineke J. The effect of castration and subsequent administration of 17β-estradiol and testosterone propionate on 5′-methylthioadenosine phosphorylase activity in rat target tissues was studied. Castration 34 days earlier resulted in a 95 reduction in ventral prostate 5′-methylthioadenosine phosphorylase activity and 16 days earlier in a 67% reduction in uterine 5′-methylthiodenosine phosphorylase activity. Four days of testosterone propionate administration stimulated ventral prostate 5′-methylhioadenosine phosphorylase activity 32% above castrate levels, which represented more than 50% of the intact control levels. 17β-Estradiol on the other hand stimulated uterine 5′-methylthioadenosine phosphorylase activity of 35% above castrate controls within 24h and with 3 days of continuous hormone treatment to within 97% of the intact control levels. However, castration and subsequent 17β-estradiol administration did not affect 5′-methylthioadenosine phosphorylase activity in rat liver and lung. Both prostate and uterine 5′-methylthioadenosine phosphorylase were shown to metabolize 5′-methylthioadenosine to 5′-methylthioribose through a 5′-methythiribose 1-phosphate intermediate. The data suggest that 5′-methylthioadenosine is not allowed to accumulate in rat target tissues even under conditions which are known to stimulate polyamine synthesis.  相似文献

Objectives:The aim was to determine metabolic and hormonal responses to strength training with or without superimposed electromyostimulation (EMS) at the beginning and the end of a 6 week training period.Methods:20 strength trained subjects were randomly assigned to two groups. The first group (S) performed 4 sets of back squats with a constantly adjusted additional load of their individual 10 repetition maximum (10 RM) twice a week over 6 weeks. The second group (S+E) did the same training program with superimposed EMS on leg and trunk muscles. Physiological responses were determined before and after the first (TS 1) and the last training session (TS 12).Results:No significant differences of hormonal responses could be observed between groups and TSs. However, small to large effects on metabolism occurred between groups and TSs. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) was significantly higher 48h after TS 1 for S+E.Conclusions:Despite a higher DOMS after S+E, there is no acute effect of superimposed EMS on hormonal response to exhaustive resistance exercise. We suggest that, because of the high resistance during 10 RM bouts, most of the muscle fibers are already activated and superimposed EMS only activates few additional muscle fibers.  相似文献

According to Indian Systems of Medicine, Spilanthes acmella (L.) Murr. (Family - Asteraceae), is considered effective in the treatment of sexual deficiencies especially due to ageing. In the present study, characterization of ethanolic extracts of the Spilanthes acmella flower and its effect on general mating pattern, penile erection and serum hormone levels of normal male Wistar albino rats were investigated and compared with sildenafil citrate. In vitro nitric oxide release was also investigated in human corpus cavernosum cell line. As N-alkylamides are a promising group, their profiling was performed using a gradient reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization ion trap mass spectrometry (HPLC/ESI-MS) method on an embedded polar column. MS1 and MS2 fragmentation data were used for identification purposes. For assessment of sexual behavior, animals were divided into five groups of eight male rats. The extracts (50, 100 and 150 mg/kg body weight/day) and sildenafil citrate (5 mg/kg body weight/day) (positive control) were administered orally for 28 days. The behavioral and sexual parameters were observed at days 0, 15, 28 and after a lapse of 7 and 14 days of discontinuance of drug treatment. Five N-isobutylamides, one 2-methylbutylamide and one 2-phenylethylamide were identified. The orally administered extract had a dose dependent positive effect on mounting frequency, intromission frequency and ejaculation frequency and the most significant effects (p < 0.05) were observed at 150 mg/kg treatment, even after a lapse of 7 and 14 days of discontinuance of drug treatment. A dose dependent effect was also observed on the FSH, LH and testosterone serum levels. With 150 mg/kg of ethanolic extract the values for FSH, LH and testosterone were 3.10 ± 0.25 mlU/ml, 6.87 ± 0.18 mlU/ml and 3.72 ± 0.12 ng/ml, respectively. In vitro nitric oxide release was 21.7 ± 2.9 μM, which was significantly higher compared to the control group (p < 0.01). Sildenafil citrate exhibited also a significant effect on NO release, but no effect on hormone levels of rats was observed. The aphrodisiac potential of an ethanolic Spilanthes acmella extract was demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. N-Alkylamides might attribute to the improved sexual potential. Study lends support to the traditional utilization of S. acmella as a sexual stimulating agent.  相似文献

研究了注射促黄体激素类似物(LHRHa)后,泥鳅(Misgurnus anguillicaudatus)血清性类同醇激素的变化规律,并探讨在泥鳅繁殖季节时.孕酮(P)、睾酮(T)和雌二醇(E2)对性腺发育的作用及调节机制.实验共分两组,对照组和实验组;对照组只注射生理盐水;实验组注射LHRHa,雌鱼0.2 μg/g,雄鱼减半.注射前尾静脉采血,作为血液样本分析基础水平(Oh),注射药物后分别在7、24、48、72和96h尾静脉采血.测定雌鱼睾酮、雌二醇和孕酮,雄鱼孕酮和睾酬血清浓度.实验结果表明:注射LHRHa,雌鱼血清睾酮和雌二醇浓度显著高于对照组,雄鱼血清睾酮和孕酮显著高于对照组(P<0.05);24h浓度较高.雌鱼孕酬、睾酮和雌二醇分别为(0.710±0.082)ng/mL、(9.00±0.57)ng/mL和(696.4±26.2)pg/mL,雄鱼孕酮和睾酮分别为(0.527±0.121)ng/mL和(9.62±0.62)ng/mL.实验组雌鱼孕酮变化基本规律为,基础水平(0-7h)-逐渐升至最高(7-24h)-逐渐降至基础水平(24-48h)-维持基础水平(48-96h).实验组雌鱼睾酮和雌二醇与雄鱼孕酮和睾酮变化规律基本相似,其规律为,逐渐上升至最高(0-24h)-逐渐降至基础水平(24-72h)-维持基础水(72-96h).24h对照组雌鱼睾酮和雌二醇显著升高,浓度分别为:睾酮(2.20±0.18)ng/mL,雌二醇(269.1±36.6)pg/mL.对照组雄鱼血清孕酮和睾酮浓度实验期间均无显著变化.研究认为:LHRHa能够刺激泥鳅性类同醇激素分泌,特别是睾酮的分泌,显著提高雌鱼性腺指数(GSI).但刺激P的分泌调控能力有限,实验期间处于较低水平,诱导排卵效果差,泥鳅的性类固醇激素可能有特殊的调节机制.雌二醇和睾酮对性腺成熟有重要作用,孕酮对介导卵细胞最终成熟和排卵可能起重要作用,而雌二醇和睾酮无明显效果.  相似文献

We present a simple mathematical model that describes how primary and secondary sex ratios of offspring may vary adaptively in order to maintain equal numbers of the sexes at the age of reproductive maturity. The model postulates that the sex of an offspring depends probabilistically on a weighted linear combination of maternal testosterone and male vulnerability. The model operates at population level, and is based on three physiological phenomena: first that maternal testosterone in follicular fluid is normally distributed, with levels above the mean more likely to be associated with the conception of males; secondly, that males are more vulnerable than females from conception onwards; and thirdly that under conditions of chronic stress, increased secretion of female testosterone coincides with increased male vulnerability. Thus during times of chronic stress, more males are conceived, but their number of live births is moderated by increased male loss. Variations in secondary sex ratios should therefore be related not only to the stressfulness of environmental conditions, but also to the timing of changes in stressfulness.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine if there is a seasonal pattern of reproductive activity in male Payoya goats and if this seasonality can be modulated by a higher level of nutrition. For a period of 16 months, 10 adult bucks were divided into two experimental groups that differed in their feeding level. The high nutrition group (H, n = 5) received 1.6 times their maintenance food requirements. The control nutrition group (C, n = 5) received a diet that supported 1.1 times their maintenance requirements. Body weight and testosterone concentrations were determined weekly, and testicular weight was determined every 2 weeks. Sexual behaviour and semen characteristics were determined monthly. Feeding level did not affect the onset or the end of the reproductive activity as measured by testosterone concentrations, with high testosterone concentrations between July and November. Ejaculation latency was positively influenced by feeding level: 43.2 ± 2.2 s vs. 61.6 ± 3.2 s for H and C group, respectively (P < 0.001). The percentage of males that ejaculated or that were sexually active was higher in the H group (P < 0.01). No differences between feeding levels were observed in the different semen characteristics studied. However, major differences between months were observed for all studied variables. These results lead us to conclude that Payoya bucks exhibit large seasonal variation in their reproductive activity. Higher feeding level allowed a better sexual behaviour in bucks in late spring, when male effect is used on the local livestock to breed females.  相似文献
