 The relative diversity and distinctness of Ethiopian barleys has been investigated using (1) morphology/isozyme/hordein polymorphisms and (2) RFLP markers. In the former a set of 51 landraces from over the whole of Ethiopia was compared with Iranian landraces based on data from previous studies and new hordein data. The two sets of landraces were found to have a comparable diversity. The Ethiopian ones are more diverse morphologically (5 traits), are similar in numbers of alleles per protein locus (17 loci) and in genetic differentiation, but are less diverse in average heterozygosity per locus and degree of polymorphism. However, on the basis of the hordein data the two sources of germplasm are very distinct. The correlation between morphological and protein diversity is very low. In the RFLP study 28 probes evenly distributed across the genome were used to analyse 43 Ethiopian landraces (represented by one single genotype) and to compare them with modern cultivars from North America, Europe and Japan, as well as 3 landraces from Iran, 1 from Nepal, and 1 accession of H. spontaneum from Afghanistan. The major finding was that the Ethiopian germplasm appears to be significantly less diverse than the modern germplasm but that it is genotypically very distinct. The apparent contradiction between a high diversity of useful genes coming from Ethiopia and an apparently low diversity at the DNA level is discussed. BOSCH, J., 1992. Floral biology and pollinators of three co-occurring Cistus species (Cistaceae). The pollination of three species of Cistus, Cistus albidus L., Cistus salvifolius L. and Cistus monspeliensis L. is studied. Insect visitors were censused and some were captured to analyse pollen distribution on their bodies. Floral phenology, breeding systems, some aspects of floral biology (pollen and nectar production, pollen-ovule ratios) and floral morphology were also studied for each species. Flowers of C. albidus produce more pollen and nectar than the other two species studied, and attract more insects, especially those with higher nutritional requirements. All three species are highly self-incompatible, but C. salvifolius and C. monspeliensis show some features that hinder xenogamy, and they have lower pollen-ovule ratios than C. albidus. As a result, this latter species apparently receives higher levels of cross-pollination, but at the cost of a higher investment to attract and reward reliable pollinators.  相似文献

Glycoalkaloids were used as evidence of the affinities of nine taxa of Solanum Series Megistacrolobum and related potato cultigens from western Bolivia. S. boliviense, S. sanctae-rosae and S. toralapanum contain the commertetraose sugar moiety and appear to represent a relatively wild group within the Series. S. megistacrolobum, S. sogarandinum and S. raphanifolium show anomolous glycoalkaloid profiles that probably reflect hybridization associated with human disturbance. Primitive forms of the S. χ ajanhuiri cultigen are indistinguishable chemicaliy from conspecific weeds that were previously classified as S. megistacrolobum. Variation in total glycoalkaloid content within Series Megistacrolobum likely reflects direct selection by humans for reduced glycoalkaloid levels during the domestication process.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to compare the nutritional properties of potato protein concentrate, a by-product of the starch industry produced entirely in Europe, with that of soybean meal (SBM), for growing cattle. The experiment was conducted on double-muscled Belgian Blue bulls, fitted with rumen, duodenal and ileal cannulas, according to a 4 × 4 Latin square design. They were fed three different iso-N and iso-net energy diets formulated according to the Dutch feed evaluation system, differing in the nature of the main protein source, which was either SBM (‘SBM’ treatment), potato protein concentrate (PPC, ‘PPC’ treatment) or an iso-N mixture of these two protein sources (‘mixed’ treatment). A fourth treatment consisted of ‘PPC’ supplemented by 9.5% digestible proteins supplied by duodenal perfusion of sodium caseinate (CAS, ‘PPC + CAS’ treatment). No significant difference was observed in the ruminal fluid pH, whereas both ‘PPC’ and ‘PPC + CAS’ had the effect of reducing the ruminal ammonia nitrogen (N-NH3) concentration. No significant difference was observed in the apparent intestinal digestibility of the dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) or N. Outflows of non-NH3-N, microbial proteins and dietary proteins from the rumen were similar for ‘PPC’, ‘SBM’ and ‘mixed’, and increased with CAS infusion by 20%, 17% and 27%, respectively. On the basis of in vivo observations, the degradability of SBM and PPC proteins was estimated at 0.60 and 0.43, respectively, corresponding to the values quoted in the literature. The supply of digestible essential amino acids (EAA) was significantly greater with ‘PPC + CAS’ and did not differ among ‘SBM’, ‘mixed’ and ‘PPC’. This illustrates the difficulty of altering the amino acid (AA) pattern of digestible protein by the nature of the protein of dietary origin when an animal is fed a high nutritional value diet. N retention was not affected by replacing SBM with PPC, but increased by 10% with CAS infusion. On the basis of the plasma AA pattern, the supply of digestible Met was probably limiting with ‘SBM’, ‘mixed’ and ‘PPC’. The CAS perfusion supplemented all AA, including Met, leading to increased N retention. This improvement was limited, however, and N utilisation remained unchanged between treatments. In conclusion, despite a more favourable EAA pattern, PPC offered no advantage compared with SBM for growing bulls when diets were formulated according to the Dutch feed evaluation system.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The survival, growth and fecundity of bumblebee colonies are affected by the availability of food resources and presence of natural enemies. Social parasites (cuckoo bumblebees and other bumblebees) can invade colonies and reduce or halt successful reproduction; however, little is known about the frequency of invasion or what environmental factors determine their success in the field.
2. We used 48 experimental colonies of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris , and manipulated both resource availability at the landscape scale and date of colony founding, to explore invasion rates of social parasites and their effect on the performance of host colonies.
3. Proximity to abundant forage resources (fields of flowering oilseed rape) and early colony founding significantly increased the probability of parasite invasion and thus offset the potential positive effects of these factors on bumblebee colony performance.
4. The study concludes that optimal colony location may be among intermediate levels of resources and supports schemes designed to increase the heterogeneity of forage resources for bumblebees across agricultural landscapes.  相似文献

The archaeological and historical record of the Dead Sea as an economic resource is longer than that of any other hypersaline lake. Although it is completely devoid of life, except for a few bacteria and algae, the climatic and geological conditions in the Dead Sea basin have produced circumstances which made this lake important for the economy of the area. The salt which was produced by evaporation of the water, or by quarrying from the salt diapir of Mt. Sodom, on the Dead Sea coast, is referred to in the Bible and in the Talmud. It was harvested until the 1930's. Potash has been extracted from the brine, by solar processes, since 1931 and today the Dead Sea is a major source of potash and bromine. The asphalt, which is found in seepages along the shores and in large blocks, occasionally found floating on the lake, has been used by the inhabitants of the area for waterproofing baskets and for decorative purpose, since the Pre-ceramic Neolithic Period, 10 000 years ago. Later, the asphalt became a major export item to Egypt. During the Early Bronze age, 4000 years ago, it was used mostly to glue flint implements to wooden handles and in the Graeco-Roman period it was used as one of the components in the embalming of Egyptian mummies. The area around the Dead Sea was the only source of balsam, perhaps the most important incense and medication of the Ancient World. Remains of a 7th century B.C. perfume factory, were found in Ein Gedi. During later periods, until the Arab conquest in the 7th century A.D., the growing of balsam was an imperial monopoly. The area of the Dead Sea was famous, for over 2000 years, for its dates and sugar. The therapeutical and medicinal properties of Dead Sea water and the hypersaline hot springs on its shore, were famous throughout the Ancient World. For example, King Herod the Great, 2000 years ago, used to visit the area to cure his many diseases. This practice continues today, and the lakes has become a major center for treatment of psoriasis. There is pictorial, archaeological and historical evidence to support the Dead Sea's importance as a trade artery for over 2300 years.  相似文献

Ralstonia solanacearum (RS) race 1 biovar 4 (R1bv4), causal agent of bacterial wilt in vegetable sweet potato (VSP), is often latent in VSP vines and is important in introduction of the pathogen to newly planted fields. In this study, the effects of biological and environmental factors on the distribution and multiplication of R1bv4 in VSP tissues were examined. Based on stem-injection inoculation, the R1bv4strain of NC01 could cause 49.0% and 33.0% wilting on VSP cultivars TN71 and WS, respectively. The populations of NC01 in diseased TN71 and WS were 108–109 cfu/g tissue at 28th day after inoculation. On the other hand, the R1bv4 could not cause symptom in cultivars of TN57 and VSPSL-1 vine and the NC01 was confined to near the injection sites. Temperature tests indicated that NC01 could cause 28.0% and 14.0% wilting on cultivar TN71 at 28 and 20°C, respectively. Moreover, the populations of NC01in diseased plants were 1.6 × 109 and 7.9 × 108 cfu/g tissue at 28 and 20°C, respectively. The distribution of NC01 in VSP stem indicated that the isolation frequency of NC01 was lower than 31.0% in terminal shoots or erect stems and 45.0 to 100.0% in creeping stem after 8 wks planted in infested soil (106 cfu/g soil). The results demonstrated that terminal shoots or erect stems were not common carrier for transmitting R1bv4. Furthermore, two R1bv4 strains, NC01 and HsinT01, were examined the ability for latent infection on cv. TN71. The results revealed that NC01 and HsinT01 showed different ability of latent infection on cultivar TN71. NC01 had lower percentage (46.8% and 45.1%) than HsinT01 (93.4% and 75.3%) at 20 and 28°C.  相似文献

Aspergillus flavus is a common saprophytic and pathogenic fungus, and its secondary metabolic pathways are one of the most highly characterized owing to its aflatoxin (AF) metabolite affecting global economic crops and human health. Different natural environments can cause significant variations in AF synthesis. Succinylation was recently identified as one of the most critical regulatory post-translational modifications affecting metabolic pathways. It is primarily reported in human cells and bacteria with few studies on fungi. Proteomic quantification of lysine succinylation (Ksuc) exploring its potential involvement in secondary metabolism regulation (including AF production) has not been performed under natural conditions in A. flavus. In this study, a quantification method was performed based on tandem mass tag labeling and antibody-based affinity enrichment of succinylated peptides via high accuracy nano-liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry to explore the succinylation mechanism affecting the pathogenicity of naturally isolated A. flavus strains with varying toxin production. Altogether, 1240 Ksuc sites in 768 proteins were identified with 1103 sites in 685 proteins quantified. Comparing succinylated protein levels between high and low AF-producing A. flavus strains, bioinformatics analysis indicated that most succinylated proteins located in the AF biosynthetic pathway were downregulated, which directly affected AF synthesis. Versicolorin B synthase is a key catalytic enzyme for heterochrome B synthesis during AF synthesis. Site-directed mutagenesis and biochemical studies revealed that versicolorin B synthase succinylation is an important regulatory mechanism affecting sclerotia development and AF biosynthesis in A. flavus. In summary, our quantitative study of the lysine succinylome in high/low AF-producing strains revealed the role of Ksuc in regulating AF biosynthesis. We revealed novel insights into the metabolism of AF biosynthesis using naturally isolated A. flavus strains and identified a rich source of metabolism-related enzymes regulated by succinylation.  相似文献

The range of uses of a conservation area by a nearby population was quantified by questionnaires applied to residents of Santa Helena county, Brazil. Of the 312 responses compiled, 71.2% of the residents acknowledged the presence of a conservation unit within the county limits while only 59.3% of the respondents had participated in some recreational or leisure outdoor activity within the unit. Activities cited by respondents included games (11.7%), beach visits (11.4%), cross-country walks (9.4%), and fishing (8.3%). A possible visitor fee to improve infrastructure within the area was approved by 64.9% of the interviewees. Suggested visitor fee varied from 50 cents to two dollars.  相似文献

Attention is increasingly being given to genetic resources in the deep seabed beyond the limits of national jurisdiction owing to their considerable potential scientific and economic value. At the same time, there are concerns that the increased demand for these genetic resources may result in their unsustainable collection or even in the extinction of species in the deep seabed. At present there is no specific legal framework governing these resources in international law. Thus, this article explores the relevant rules of international law applicable to the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources in the deep seabed.  相似文献
