Studies of individually identified animals can produce substantialdata sets containing information on the structure and temporalscale of social organizations. However, methods of analyzingsuch data are not well established. Important features of asocial organization are revealed by plotting the rate of persistenceof the associations between pairs of individuals over a rangeof time lags (lagged association rate). The consistency of long-termrelationships can be characterized using the rate of associationof pairs of individuals between their first and last observedassociations (intermediate association rate). A hierarchicalseries of models featuring exponentially decaying lagged associationrates may be fitted to these data. This technique retrievedthe essential parameters of five simulated social organizationsand, when used on real data, portrayed the essential featuresof the patterns of temporal change in relationships betweenanimals. The method should be especially useful for analyzingfissionfusion societies containing 10–10, 000 individuallyidentifiable animals.  相似文献

城市化背景下人类与自然环境的矛盾呈现出多尺度、层级化特征,而传统生态网络的构建方式较少考虑不同尺度下生态要素的关系,无法从区域落实到中心城区,难以形成系统性的解决方案。研究在综合梳理各尺度生态网络构建方法的基础上,以长沙市为例,基于形态学空间格局分析(Morphological Spatial Pattern Analysis,MSPA)、景观连通性原理和生态斑块重要性评价识别生态源地,并通过多层级生态阻力面的确定,综合运用最小费用路径(Least-cost path method,LCP)、电路理论、层级传导理论、尺度嵌套等方法对市域、都市区、中心城区的生态网络进行了协同构建和层级优化,最后基于不同尺度生态网络的特点应用并落实到多层级的国土空间规划体系中。研究结果表明:(1)长沙市域生态网络和都市区生态网络具有较好的层级嵌套特征;共识别两尺度生态叠合源地14个、生态叠合廊道15条,主要通过中心城区内的湘江、浏阳河和捞刀河部分河段与外围生态绿圈相衔接,形成"外环内楔"的空间格局。(2)确定市域重要廊道、市域潜在廊道、生态叠合廊道、都市区重要廊道、都市区潜在廊道的核心保护面积共501.14 km2,并提取位于生态廊道核心保护区范围内的生态夹点和生态障碍点,以进一步落实生态保护修复策略。(3)得到具有重要生态连通功能的中心城区生态绿道长度441.2 km,生态修复单元56个,并结合生态阻力值划分为5级进行针对性修复。(4)基于不同尺度生态网络的衔接、嵌套,最终构建"市域总体生态安全格局-都市区城市生态空间发展格局-以城市绿道为基础的中心城区生态修复单元",并与不同层级的国土空间规划体系相对应。研究结果将为以大城市为中心的跨尺度生态系统修复和生态安全格局构建提供科学参考。  相似文献

The evolution of parasite life histories should usually have correlated effects on host survivorship and/or reproductive success. For example, parasites that reproduce more rapidly might be expected to cause greater reductions in host fitness. Important theoretical advances have recently been made on virulence evolution, but the results are not always consistent. Here I compare two models [ Q. Rev. Biol. 71 (1996) 37 ; Q. Rev. Biol. 75 (2000) 261 ] on the evolution of virulence that get qualitatively different results with respect to the effects of coinfection. I also construct a third model that attempts to connect these two formulations. The results suggest that parasite growth rates should increase as local host competition increases, unless relatedness is at equilibrium. In addition, the qualitative effect of adding coinfections on parasite growth rates depends critically on how the number of coinfections affects transmission success.  相似文献

Male katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) produce mating calls by rubbing the wings together, using specialized structures in their forewings (stridulatory file, scraper and mirror). A large proportion of species (ca. 66%) reported in the literature produces ultrasonic signals as principal output. Relationships among body size, generator structures and the acoustic parameters carrier frequency (fc) and pulse duration (pd), were studied in 58 tropical species that use pure‐tone signals. A comparative analysis, based on the only available katydid phylogeny, shows how changes in sound generator form are related to changes in fc and pd. Anatomical changes of the sound generator that might have been selected via fc and pd are mirror size, file length and number of file teeth. Selection for structures of the stridulatory apparatus that enhance wing mechanics via file‐teeth and scraper morphology was crucial in the evolution of ultrasonic signals in the family Tettigoniidae.  相似文献

The effect of disturbance on local communities may operate within the context of the spatial landscape. We examined the scale-dependent effects of windthrow disturbance caused by a large typhoon on three arthropod communities in a temperate forest of Japan. Canopy arthropods were collected by beating foliage, forest-floor arthropods were collected by sweeping the vegetation, and flying arthropods were collected in Malaise traps. To assess the “functional spatial scale” at which arthropods responded to tree-fall disturbance, the gap rate was quantified at different spatial scales by sequentially enlarging the radius of a circular landscape sector in 10-m increments from 10 to 500 m. We then analyzed the responses of order richness and abundance to the gap rate for each arthropod community. The spatial scale of the significant best-fitting model, which was selected from the models fitted to the gap rate at stepwise spatial scales, was regarded as the arthropod-specific functional spatial scale. Arthropod order richness was not dependent on the gap rate. In contrast, arthropod order abundance depended significantly on the gap rate in many orders, but varied in the response direction and functional spatial scale. These order-specific, scale-dependent responses to tree-fall gaps could complicate interactions among organisms, leading to complex community organization. An understanding of the spatial processes that link the use of space by organisms with the spatial scale at which ecological processes are experienced is required to elucidate the responses of populations, communities, and biotic interactions to disturbances in a spatial landscape context.  相似文献

To maximize fitness, animals must respond to a variety of processes that operate at different rates or timescales. Appropriate decisions could therefore involve complex interactions among these processes. For example, eiders wintering in the arctic sea ice must consider locomotion and physiology of diving for benthic invertebrates, digestive processing rate and a nonlinear decrease in profitability of diving as currents increase over the tidal cycle. Using a multi-scale dynamic modelling approach and continuous field observations of individuals, we demonstrate that the strategy that maximizes long-term energy gain involves resting during the most profitable foraging period (slack currents). These counterintuitive foraging patterns are an adaptive trade-off between multiple overlapping rate processes and cannot be explained by classical rate-maximizing optimization theory, which only considers a single timescale and predicts a constant rate of foraging. By reducing foraging and instead digesting during slack currents, eiders structure their activity in order to maximize long-term energetic gain over an entire tide cycle. This study reveals how counterintuitive patterns and a complex functional response can result from a simple trade-off among several overlapping rate processes, emphasizing the necessity of a multi-scale approach for understanding adaptive routines in the wild and evaluating mechanisms in ecological time series.  相似文献

Abstract. The relationships between biogeographical patterns and local‐scale patterns based on microscale features, such as topoclimate, are well known in plant biogeography. Here we present a method of determining this correspondence using constrained ordination and correlations. We examined compositional gradients at two different scales, biogeographical chorotypes, and diversity. Compositional data (124 taxa × 113 plots) were sampled at four regularly spaced sites in south‐eastern Spain. Longitude (LONGI) was used as a spatial variable representing an east–west climate gradient, together with a radiation index (RADIN), elevation, and a disturbance indicator. All factors correlated with the compositional gradients, but the local‐topoclimate factor (RADIN) and the broad‐scale factor (LONGI) were most important. These two, spatially independent factors were both correlated with the two first ordination axes, and therefore should relate to the same general trend in species‐turnover. There was a significant Spearman's rank correlation between the species order along these two gradients. This is interpreted as an ecological self‐similar pattern, i.e. coenoclines repeating at different scales. A consistent order of species along local‐ and broad‐scale coenoclines may indicate that similar operational factors act at several scales, here related to moisture and temperature. The distribution of Mediterraneo–Macaronesian, Mediterraneo–Saharo–Arabian and Ibero–Maghribian species confirmed the correspondence between the broad‐ and local‐scale gradients. The former group decreases in number with increasing aridity along both gradients, whereas the two latter groups increase. A discordant pattern was found with south‐eastern Iberian endemics, but this may be explained by several of them being edaphic (saxicolous) specialists. There is a significant decrease in species richness with high radiation, but the expected increase along the longitudinal gradient from west (dry) to east (moist) was not statistically significant. This may be due to the correspondence between high richness and disturbance, both occurring in the middle of the broad‐scale gradient.  相似文献

1. It is hypothesised that ecological restoration in grasslands can induce an alternative stable state shift in vegetation. The change in vegetation influences insect community assemblages and allows for greater functional redundancy in pollination and refuge for native insect species. 2. Insect community assemblages at eight coastal California grassland sites were evaluated. Half of these sites had undergone restoration through active revegetation of native grassland flora and half were non‐restored. Insects were collected from Lupinus bicolor (Fabaceae) within 2 × 2‐m2 plots in spring 2017. Lupinus bicolor is a common native species that is used in California restoration projects, and home and state landscaping projects. 3. Ordination demonstrated that insect community assemblages were different between restored and non‐restored sites. These differences were seen in insect functional groups as well as taxa‐specific differences and were found to be driven by environmental characteristics such as non‐native forb cover. 4. Functional redundancy of herbivores decreased at restored sites, while pollinators became more redundant compared with non‐restored sites. The assemblages of the common species found at restoration sites contained more native insects than those found at non‐restored sites, including species such as Bombus vosnesenskii. 5. Local grassland restoration has the potential to induce an alternative stable state change and affect insect community assemblages. Additionally, it was found that grassland restoration can be a potential conservation tool to provide refugia for bumblebees (Bombus), but additional studies are required to fully understand its broader applicability.  相似文献
