The sabertoothed felids were among the most unusual predators in the late Tertiary ecosystems, and the sabertooth morphology is regarded as being absent from the modern ecosystems. In recent years, the primitive Paramachairodus has become well known and has yielded much valuable information on the primitive skull morphology among sabercats, providing the first evidence-based scenarios for the evolution of skull morphology in later sabercats. However, comparison of craniomandibular morphology of the extant clouded leopard Neofelis nebulosa and Paramachairodus reveals numerous similarities and subsequent divergence from other extant great cats. In several key aspects, the clouded leopard has approached a primitive sabercat craniomandibular morphology and has diverged markedly from its sister group, the Panthera lineage. A primitive sabertooth condition arose six times in the Tertiary period, not five as is traditionally advocated. The clouded leopard appears to be a useful model for understanding primitive sabercat morphology and could shed important light on sabercat evolution. The unusual nature of the clouded leopard implies that increased efforts should be spent on insuring the continuing survival of this rare and endangered species. This study investigates the amphisbaenian species skull which includes cranium, lower jaw and hyoid apparatus. The medial dorsal bones comprise the premaxilla, nasal, frontal and parietal. The premaxilla carries a large medial tooth and two lateral ones. The nasals are paired bones and separated by longitudinal suture. Bones of circumorbital series are frontal, orbitosphenoid and maxilla. The occipital ring consists of basioccipital, supraoccipital and exooccipital. Supraoccipital and basioccipital are single bones while the exo-occipitals are paired. The bones of the palate comprise premaxilla, maxilla, septomaxilla, palatine, pterygoid, ectopterygoid, basisphenoid, parasphenoid, orbitosphenoid and laterosphenoid. Prevomer and pterygoid teeth are absent. Palatine represent by two separate bones. The temporal bones are clearly visible. The lower jaw consists of the dentary, articular, coronoid, supra-angular, angular and splenial. The hyoid apparatus is represented by a Y-shaped structure. The mandible is long and is suspended from the braincase via relatively short quadrate. There is an extensive contact between the long angular and the large triangular coronoid. Thus inter-mandibular joint is bridged completely by the angular and consequently, the lower jaws are relatively rigid and kinetic. The maxillae are suspended from the braincase largely by ligaments and muscles rather than through bony articulation. In conclusion, the skull shape affects feeding strategy in Diplometopon zarudnyi. The prey is ingested and transported via a rapid maxillary raking mechanism.  相似文献

目的:探讨颅底脊索瘤的CT、MRI表现及治疗措施。方法:回顾性分析经病理证实的26例脊索瘤患者的临床资料。肿瘤位于鞍区及鼻咽部者9例,位于中颅窝者5例,位于后颅窝者8例,混合型4例。手术入路:额颞入路一翼点开颅9例,鼻内镜下经蝶入路5例,颞下、颞枕及扩大中颅窝入路8例,4例未手术行放射治疗。结果:肿瘤全切8例,大部及次全切14例,围手术期未见死亡病例。25例患者获得随访;3例于术后1年内复发,其中2例死亡,余者颅神经损伤及肢体症状均有改善。结论:脊索瘤无典型临床表现,现多可通过术前影像学检查得以诊断,少数位于特殊位置者需与垂体瘤,颅咽管瘤,三叉神经鞘瘤等鉴别;肿瘤全切较为困难,根据需要选择相应的手术入路可明显提高手术效果;放疗可作为术后辅助治疗。  相似文献

目的:探讨以乳突切迹和翼钩为基点的侧颅底分区新方法.方法:在乳突切迹后缘、翼钩、枕骨大孔前缘中点和颧根四个结构间相互连线,区分侧颅底并测量连线的长度.结果:乳突切迹与侧颅底重要结构的关系密切,切迹后缘与翼钩连线和正中线将侧颅底分成内、外侧两个大的三角区,每个区再分成前后两个三角区共四个三角区,即腭和颞下三角、咽三角、关节和听三角、血管神经三角,其中血管神经三角的三边长度左右侧分别为(74.52±5.47)mm和(74.66±5.41)mm、(59.77±3.84)mm和(59.67±3.56)mm、(42.23±3.11)mm和(42.48±2.60)mm.结论:本研究提供了新的侧颅底分区方法,且血管神经三角的区域划分更为科学,为临床侧颅底手术入路和定位提供了解剖学参考.  相似文献

资阳人头骨化石,是新中国成立后首次发现的保存较为完整的人类化石,曾经引起学术界的广泛关注。由于其出土的具体位点和层位不是很清楚,对其年代目前还存有争议。长期以来,对资阳人的研究局限于传统的头骨外部形态的描述和测量。本文利用高分辨率工业CT(Computed tomography)扫描资阳人头骨,并对其内部解剖结构 (包括骨壁结构、额窦、骨内耳迷路、颞骨乳突小房、颅内模) 进行3D虚拟复原和研究,以期获得更多的形态信息。CT断层图显示资阳人头骨的骨壁板障层较厚,远大于外板层和内板层,支持以往研究认为的该头骨属于50岁以上个体的鉴定结果。额窦呈叶形,局限于两侧眼眶的内上方;左、右侧额窦的表面积分别为1780mm2和2910mm2。骨性内耳迷路半规管的大小及其比例,与尼安德特人不同,而位于晚更新世和全新世现代人变异范围之间。颞骨乳突小房为气化型,几乎占据了整个乳突部。根据复原的颅内模,资阳人的颅容量约为1250mL。颅内模的各项测量数值虽然都偏小,但脑的绝大多数形态特征、宽-高指数、顶叶-脑长指数都位于现代人的变异范围之内,而与直立人和更新世古老型人类不同。资阳人头骨内部解剖结构保留有少量原始特征,包括枕叶向后突显著、大脑窝比小脑窝大而深,这些特征不同于全新世人类,更类似于晚更新世早期现代人。  相似文献

The paper presents the skull of a male gray wolf shot in the region of Snina, eastern Slovakia. Age at death of the wolf was estimated at 6 years. The skull was characterized by the almost-complete absence of the alveolar processes of the incisive bones and multiple dental abnormalities that were attributed to a severe trauma. All maxillary incisors and both maxillary first premolars were missing. In addition, both maxillary canines were fractured with only tooth fragments being left. The pulp exposure associated with the crown fractures of the maxillary canines had caused pulp necrosis and periapical lesions, as evidenced on radiographs. The right P2, P3, and P4 were fractured, with only the remaining tooth structure of the second and third premolars being left. In the right P4 and the left M1, periapical bone resorption was diagnosed radiologically. In the mandibular dentition, the right I2 and left P1 had been lost in life. The mandibular canines exhibited distinct wear facets that were caused by contact with the maxillary third incisors, which were subsequently lost. The fact that all fractured teeth showed signs of wear indicates that the trauma had occurred some time before the wolf was shot.  相似文献

Numerous alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris) populations from the Balkans, representing all the previously established phylogeographic lineages, were studied for variations in various morphological characteristics (body size and shape, skull qualitative traits and number of trunk vertebrae). Here, we present a decoupling of morphological and mtDNA phylogeographic substructuring in the alpine newt on the Balkan Peninsula. In sharp contrast to other European newts (Triturus spp., Lissotriton spp.), the vast majority of morphological variation in the alpine newt is concentrated at the population level indicating an in situ morphological diversification. We found that the rate of morphological change is similar to the rate of mtDNA change. We hypothesize that the alpine newts are characterized by non-adaptive morphological evolution.  相似文献

Changes in the technology of food preparation over the last few thousand years (especially cooking, softening, and grinding) are hypothesized to have contributed to smaller facial size in humans because of less growth in response to strains generated by chewing softer, more processed food. While there is considerable comparative evidence to support this idea, most experimental tests of this hypothesis have been on non-human primates or other very prognathic mammals (rodents, swine) raised on hard versus very soft (nearly liquid) diets. Here, we examine facial growth and in vivo strains generated in response to raw/dried foods versus cooked foods in a retrognathic mammal, the rock hyrax (Procavia capensis). The results indicate that the hyrax cranium resembles the non-human primate cranium in having a steep gradient of strains from the occlusal to orbital regions, but differs from most non-anthropoids in being primarily twisted; the hyrax mandible is bent both vertically and laterally. In general, higher strains, as much as two-fold at some sites, are generated by masticating raw versus cooked food. Hyraxes raised on cooked food had significantly less growth (approximately 10%) in the ventral (inferior) and posterior portions of the face, where strains are highest, resembling many of the differences evident between humans raised on highly processed versus less processed diets. The results support the hypothesis that food processing techniques have led to decreased facial growth in the mandibular and maxillary arches in recent human populations.  相似文献
