Summary Several subjective choices must be made when classifying genotypes based on data from plant breeding trials. One choice involves the method used to weight the contribution each environment makes to the classification. A second involves the use of either genotype-means for each environment or genotypevalues for each block, i.e., considering each block to be a different environment. Another involves whether environments (or blocks) in which genotypes are nonsignificantly different should be included or excluded from such classifications. An alternative to the use of raw or standardized data, is proposed in which each environment is weighted by a discrimination index (DI) that is based on the concept of repeatability. In this study the effect of three weighting methods (raw, standardized and DI), the choice of using environments or blocks, and the choice of including or excluding environments or blocks in which genotypic effects were not significant, were considered in factorial combination to give 12 options. A data set comprised of five check cultivars each repeated six times in each of three blocks at six environments was used. The effect of these options on the ability of a hierarchical clustering technique to correctly classify the repeats into five groups, each consisting of all the six repeats of a particular check cultivar, was investigated. It was found that the DI weighting method generally led to better recovery of the known structure. Using block data rather than environmental data also improved structure recovery for each of the three weighting methods. The exclusive use of environments in which genotypic effects were significant decreased structure recovery while the contrary generally occurred for blocks. The best structure recovery was obtained from the DI weighting applied to blocks (whether genotypes were significant or not).  相似文献

This study presents the first physiological information for a member of the wingless Mantophasmatodea, or Heelwalkers. This species shows cyclic gas exchange with no evidence of a Flutter period (more typical of discontinuous gas exchange in insects) and no indication that the spiracles are fully occluded during quiescent metabolism. Standard metabolic rate at 20 degrees C was 21.32+/-2.73 microl CO(2)h(-1) (mean+/-S.E.), with a Q(10) (10-25 degrees C) of 1.7. Increases in V()CO(2) associated with variation in mass and with trial temperature were modulated by an increase in burst period volume and a decline in cycle frequency. Total water loss rate, determined by infrared gas analysis, was 0.876+/-0.08 mg H(2)Oh(-1) (range 0.602-1.577, n=11) whilst cuticular water loss rate, estimated by linear regression of total water loss rate and metabolic rate, was 0.618+/-0.09 mg H(2)Oh(-1) (range 0.341-1.363, n=11). Respiratory water loss rate was therefore no more than 29% of the total rate of water loss. Both total water loss rate and estimated cuticular water loss rate were significantly repeatable, with intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.745 and 0.553, respectively.  相似文献

Over three years, seven hundred and sixty two 14-month-old Bluefaced Leicester crossbred ewe lambs were individually exposed to a 6-min arena test designed to evaluate the behaviour of sheep exposed to a situation of conflicting motivations (to seek flock mates versus avoid a motionless human). The behaviours measured included vocalisation (latency and number of bleats), locomotion (number of squares entered, number of entries to the area close to the observer) and proximity (time spent near to or distant from the observer and time in the centre of the arena). In the first year, 190 lambs were measured three times at ages between 8 and 14 months. Changes in mean levels of behaviour that were consistent with habituation were observed during these repeated tests. The repeatability of traits for vocalisation (0.58–0.71) tended to be higher than for locomotion (0.38–0.40) and for proximity to the human (0.17–0.60) with evidence of an increase in the repeatability of proximity traits between the second and third tests. There were no significant effects of litter size at birth or rearing type on behaviour and only small effects of farm of origin and breed of dam of the lamb (Scottish Blackface and Hardy Speckled Face). Heritability estimates were: latency to bleat (0.13), number of bleats (0.39), number of squares entered (0.29), time spent distant from the observer (0.13), time in the centre of the arena (0.02), time spent near to the observer (0.22) and number of entries to the area near to the observer (0.21). Phenotypic, genetic and environmental correlations were generally of similar magnitude, and indicated a moderate relationship between traits for vocalisation and locomotion, with no significant associations between traits for vocalisation and proximity to the observer. Test behaviours were not significantly correlated to yearling weight. These results demonstrate the existence of considerable genetic variation in behaviour among sheep and indicate that behavioural measures of vocalisation and proximity to the human are genetically and environmentally uncorrelated and may represent independent measures of emotional state.  相似文献

Copula duration and sperm storage patterns can directly or indirectly affect fitness of male and female insects. Although both sexes have an interest in the outcome, research has tended to focus on males. To investigate female influences, we compared copula duration and sperm storage of Queensland fruit fly females that were intact, or had been incapacitated through decapitation or abdomen isolation. We found that copulations were far longer when females had been incapacitated, indicating that constraints imposed on copula duration by intact females had been relaxed. Repeatability of copula duration for males was very low regardless of female treatment, and this is also consistent with strong female influence. Number of sperm in the spermathecae was not influenced by female treatment, suggesting that female abdominal ganglia control the transport of sperm to these long-term storage organs. However, more sperm were found in the ventral receptacles of incapacitated females compared to intact females. Overall, results implicate cephalic ganglia in regulation of copula duration and short-term sperm storage in the ventral receptacle and abdominal ganglia in regulation of long-term sperm storage in the spermathecae.  相似文献

PurposeThis study examined the reliability of patellar tendon cross sectional area (CSA) measurement using brightness mode ultrasonography.MethodsThe patellar tendon CSA of fourteen participants was examined on two different days and at three different positions (proximal, median and distal). Five trials per day were conducted in each position, replacing the ultrasound probe on every trial. The images were examined by three different and equally experienced observers. We compared the mean of the five trials in each position to examine the day, observer and position effect. Further, Bland and Altman plots, root mean square (RMS) differences and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated.ResultsThere was a significant (p < 0.05) day, observer and position effect on the CSA, while the average ICC was 0.592. The Bland and Altman plots showed that differences between conditions or groups, should be in average lower than 37% or higher than 55% of the patellar tendon CSA to be important for clinical or intervention studies.ConclusionOur findings show low reliability of the method, which resulted from the low clarity and unclear visibility of tissue boundaries in the ultrasound images. Therefore, the measurement of the CSA of the patellar tendon using ultrasound does not provide accurate and reliable results.  相似文献

Over the past decade, the real-time cell analyzer (RTCA) has provided a good tool to the cell-based in vitro assay. Unlike the traditional systems that label the target cells with luminescence, fluorescence, or light absorption, RTCA monitors cell properties using noninvasive and label-free impedance measuring. However, realization of the maximum value of RTCA for applications will require assurance of within-experiment repeatability, day-to-day repeatability, and robustness to variations in conditions that might occur from different experiments. In this article, the performance and variability of RTCA is evaluated and a novel repeatability index (RI) is proposed to analyze the intra-/inter-E-plate repeatability of RTCA. The repeatability assay involves six cell lines and two media (water [H2O] and dimethyl sulfoxide [DMSO]). First, six cell lines are exposed to the media individually, and time-dependent cellular response curves characterized as a cell index (CI) are recorded by RTCA. Then, the variations along sampling time and among repeated tests are calculated and RI values are obtained. Finally, a discriminating standard is set up to evaluate the degree of repeatability. As opposed to the standardized methodologies, it is shown that the presented index can give the quantitative evaluation for repeatability of RTCA within E-plate and variation on different days.  相似文献

Summary Single-plant heritability estimates of 38.9%, 31.5% and 42.3% were obtained for number of bunches (NB), fresh fruit bunch yield (FFB) and mean bunch weight (MBW) respectively. Hybrid (family) mean heritability estimates for these traits were 88.9%, 90.5% and 96% respectively. Repeatability estimates for these traits were 33%, 11% and 8% for NB, FFB and MBW respectively. Evaluation of hybrid family mean for yield components appears feasible at the third or fourth year of data collection. Phenotypic and genotypic correlations between NB and FFB were 0.80 and 0.61 respectively; between NB and MBW, –0.41 and –0.16 respectively; and between FFB and MBW, 0.66 and 0.60 respectively. The hypothesis that increased FFB can be obtained by hybridization between parents with high NB and heavy MBW is supported by this correlation set.  相似文献

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) and total evaporative water loss (TEWL) are thought to have evolved in conjunction with life history traits and are often assumed to be characteristic features of an animal. Physiological traits can show large intraindividual variation at short and long timescales, yet natural selection can only act on a trait if it is a characteristic feature of an individual. The repeatability of a trait, a measure of the portion of variance that is caused by differences among individuals, indicates if it is a characteristic feature of an individual. We measured repeatability of BMR and TEWL of 18 captive European stonechats (Saxicola torquata rubicola) within the winter season. Repeatability was 0.56 for BMR and 0.60 for mass-specific BMR. Age and body mass had a significant effect on variation in BMR. Also after accounting for this variation, BMR remained repeatable. TEWL and mass-specific TEWL showed nonsignificant repeatabilities of 0.11 and 0.12, respectively. We conclude that BMR is a characteristic feature of an individual in our population of European stonechats, whereas TEWL is not. We discuss our results in the context of a review of currently available estimates of repeatability of BMR and TEWL for birds.  相似文献

The concept of personality implies individual differences in behavior and physiology that show some degree of repeatability/consistency over time and across contexts. Most studies of animal personality, particularly studies of individuals' variation in physiological mechanisms, have been conducted on selected individuals in controlled conditions. We attempted to detect consistent behaviors as well as physiological patterns in greylag ganders (Anser anser) from a free-roaming flock living in semi-natural conditions. We tested 10 individuals repeatedly, in a handling trial, resembling tests for characterization of "temperaments" in captive animals. We recorded the behavior of the same 10 individuals during four situations in the socially intact flock: (1) a "low density feeding condition", (2) a "high density feeding condition", (3) a "low density post-feeding situation" and (4) while the geese rested. We collected fecal samples for determination of excreted immuno-reactive corticosterone (BM) and testosterone metabolites (TM) after handling trials, as well as the "low density feeding" and the "high density feeding" conditions. BM levels were very highly consistent over the repeats of handling trials, and the "low density feeding condition" and tended to be consistent over the first two repeats of the "high density feeding condition". Also, BM responses tended to be consistent across contexts. Despite seasonal variation, there tended to be inter-test consistency of TM, which pointed to some individual differences in TM as well. Aggressiveness turned out to be a highly repeatable trait, which was consistent across social situations, and tended to correlate with an individual's resistance during handling trials. Also, "proximity to the female partner" and "sociability" - the average number of neighboring geese in a close distance while resting - were consistent. We conclude that aggressiveness, "affiliative tendencies" and levels of excreted corticosterone and testosterone metabolites may be crucial factors of personality in geese.  相似文献
