Transverse plane shear stress between the prosthetic socket and residual limb often results in soft tissue breakdown and discomfort for individuals with lower-limb amputation. To better understand the effects of reduced transverse plane stiffness in the shank of a prosthesis, a second-generation variable stiffness torsion adapter (VSTA II) was tested with individuals with a transtibial amputation (n = 10). Peak transverse plane moments, VSTA II deflection, range of whole body angular momentum (WBAM), ground reaction impulse, joint work, and personal stiffness preference were evaluated at three fixed stiffness levels (compliant: 0.25 Nm/°, intermediate: 0.75 Nm/°, stiff: 1.25 Nm/°) at three walking speeds (self-selected, fast and slow: +/− 20% of self-selected, respectively) while straight-line walking and performing left and right turns. Residual limb loading decreased and VSTA II displacement increased for reductions in stiffness and both metrics increased with increasing walking speed, while ground reaction impulse and joint work were unaffected. The range of WBAM increased with decreased stiffness, which suggests an increased risk of falling when using the VSTA II at lower stiffness settings. Preference testing showed no significant result, but trends for lower stiffness settings when turning and walking at self-selected speeds were noted, as were stiffer settings when walking straight and at faster speeds. These results show that a device with rotational compliance like the VSTA II could reduce loading on the residual limb during straight walking and turning activities and that factors such as walking speed, activity type and user preference can affect the conditions for optimal use.  相似文献

Walking speeds of female Trichogramma exiguum Pinto & Platner were fastest on maize and soybean (12 cm/min), intermediate on tomato (8 cm/min), and slowest on woolly mullein, Verbascum thapsus (3 cm/min). Similarly, rates of turning along the paths of walking T. exiguum were smallest on maize (median angle=0°±15°), intermediate on soybean and tomato, and greatest on V. thapsus (median angle=30°±15°). Leaf trichome density and morphology influenced walking behavior. Walking was slowed and flight initiation delayed for T. exiguum walking on Amaranthus hybridus leaves compared to either maize or filter paper. When inundative releases are conducted, the effects of plant surfaces on searching rates and arrestment should be considered in determining release rates of Trichogramma spp.
Résumé La vitesse de marche a été déterminée en lâchant des individus sur chaque substrat végétal et en traçant leur parcours sur une plaque de verre placée à 9 mm au dessus du sujet. Les déviations angulaires de portions successives des tracés, longues de 1 mm, ont été utilisées pour mesurer les taux de changement de direction. Dans une deuxième expérience, des individus ont été lâchés au milieu d'une cercle de 40 mm de diamètre sur chaque substrat et les temps écoulés avant l'envol ou pour atteindre le bord du cercle à la marche ont servi à évaluer respectivement la propension au vol et la vitesse de déambulation.Les vitesses de marche ont été plus rapides sur maïs et soja (12 cm/min), moyennes sur tomate (8 cm/min) et les plus lentes sur Verbascum thapsus (Scrophulariaceae) (3 cm/min). De le même façon, les angles de changement de direction au cours des marches effectuées par T. exiguum ont été plus petits sur maïs, moyens sur soja et tomate, et plus grands sur V. thapsus. Chez T. exiguum marchant sur des feuilles d'Amaranthus hybridus L. (Amaranthaceae), la marche a été plus lente et l'envol plus tardif que sur maîs ou papier filtre.Lors de lâchers inondatifs, les effets des surfaces végétales sur les vitesses d'exploration et d'arrêt devraient être pris en compte pour déterminer les vitesses de lâcher des Trichogramma spp.

Summary The relationship between the size and shape of regenerative outgrowth and the quantity of innervation was studied in adult Xenopus laevis. The forelimbs, of which the nerve supply was artificially altered, were amputated midway through the stylopodium and were kept for 1 year. The regenerative outgrowths that formed in normal limbs with an intact nerve supply were mainly spike-shaped and occasionally rod-shaped. However, when the nerve supply to the distal part of the forelimb was augmented by surgically diverting ipsilateral sciatic nerve bundles, the quantity of innervation was increased to about two and a half times that of the normal limb. These hyperinnervated outgrowths were somewhat larger than those of the normally innervated outgrowths and the majority of them were oar-shaped, a type hardly ever encountered in normal regeneration. In contrast, when partial denervation was performed concomitantly with limb amputation, by ablation of the N. radialis at the shoulder joint, the quantity of innervation decreased to about one half that of the normal limb. The outgrowths obtained were spike-shaped in all cases, with their size being about half that of the normally innervated outgrowths. Furthermore, when both the N. radialis and N. ulnaris were ablated in the same way, the amputated limbs were mostly non-regenerative, but some of them regenerated small conical outgrowths. Based on these results, a discussion is presented concerning the relationship between a regenerative outgrowth and the innervation of the forelimb in Xenopus.  相似文献

Generalist predatory mites are the common phytoseiid fauna in many agroecosystems, but little attention has been paid to their potential as biological control agents. In this study, we determined the functional responses of adult females of the generalist predator Neoseiulus barkeri Hughes on eggs, larvae, and adults of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, in the laboratory. Predation experiments were conducted on pepper leaf discs over a 24 h period at 25±1°C, 70–80% RH and 16L:8D photoperiod. Prey densities ranged 5 to 80 eggs, or 5 to 40 larvae, or 1 to 8 female adults of T. urticae per disc. The predation rate of N. barkeri adult females on T. urticae eggs was the same as on its larvae, but the predation rate on adult females was much lower. The role of generalist predatory mites in integrated and biological control of greenhouse pests was discussed.  相似文献

We study bias-reduced estimators of exponentially transformed parameters in general linear models (GLMs) and show how they can be used to obtain bias-reduced conditional (or unconditional) odds ratios in matched case-control studies. Two options are considered and compared: the explicit approach and the implicit approach. The implicit approach is based on the modified score function where bias-reduced estimates are obtained by using iterative procedures to solve the modified score equations. The explicit approach is shown to be a one-step approximation of this iterative procedure. To apply these approaches for the conditional analysis of matched case-control studies, with potentially unmatched confounding and with several exposures, we utilize the relation between the conditional likelihood and the likelihood of the unconditional logit binomial GLM for matched pairs and Cox partial likelihood for matched sets with appropriately setup data. The properties of the estimators are evaluated by using a large Monte Carlo simulation study and an illustration of a real dataset is shown. Researchers reporting the results on the exponentiated scale should use bias-reduced estimators since otherwise the effects can be under or overestimated, where the magnitude of the bias is especially large in studies with smaller sample sizes.  相似文献

The key to the development of a successful implant is an understanding of the effect of bone remodelling on its long-term fixation. In this study, clinically observed patterns of bone remodelling have been compared with computer-based predictions for one particular design of prosthesis, the Thrust Plate Prosthesis (Centerpulse Orthopedics, Winterthur, Switzerland). Three-dimensional finite-element models were created using geometrical and bone density data obtained from CT scanning. Results from the bone remodelling simulation indicated that varying the relative rate of bone deposition/resorption and the interfacial conditions between the bone and the implant could produce the trend towards the two clinically observed patterns of remodelling.  相似文献

A validated, using in vitro biomechanical testing, finite element model was used to evaluate the affects of (1) cement augmentation and (2) an intact posterior cortex in osteoporotic bone. The presence of augmentation and/or a posterior cortical cortex increased the stabilization of the pedicle screw 2–5 fold. Placement of cement influenced failure load and toggle; with distal placement having the largest increase in failure load and decrease in cephalad–caudad toggle. The presence of posterior cortex caused a decrease in the amount of toggle, a proximal shift of the center of rotation and an increase in the maximum failure force.  相似文献

With the recent development of retinal prostheses, it is important to develop reliable techniques for assessing the safety of these devices in preclinical studies. However, the standard fixation, preparation, and automated histology procedures are not ideal. Here we describe new procedures for evaluating the health of the retina directly adjacent to an implant. Retinal prostheses feature electrode arrays in contact with eye tissue. Previous methods have not been able to spatially localize the ocular tissue adjacent to individual electrodes within the array. In addition, standard histological processing often results in gross artifactual detachment of the retinal layers when assessing implanted eyes. Consequently, it has been difficult to assess localized damage, if present, caused by implantation and stimulation of an implanted electrode array. Therefore, we developed a method for identifying and localizing the ocular tissue adjacent to implanted electrodes using a (color-coded) dye marking scheme, and we modified an eye fixation technique to minimize artifactual retinal detachment. This method also rendered the sclera translucent, enabling localization of individual electrodes and specific parts of an implant. Finally, we used a matched control to increase the power of the histopathological assessments. In summary, this method enables reliable and efficient discrimination and assessment of the retinal cytoarchitecture in an implanted eye.  相似文献

Due to its high sensitivity and conductivity, electrotactile stimulation (ETS) on the tongue has proven to be a useful and technically convenient tool to substitute and/or augment sensory capabilities. However, most of its applications have only provided spatial attributes and little is known about (a) the ability of the tongue's sensory system to process electrical stimuli of varying magnitudes and (b) how modulation of ETS intensity affects subjects’ ability to decode stimulus intensity. We addressed these questions by quantifying: (1) the magnitude of the dynamic range (DR; maximal comfortable intensity/perception threshold) and its sensitivity to prolonged exposure; (2) subjects’ ability to perceive intensity changes; and (3) subjects’ ability to associate intensity with angular excursions of a protractor's handle. We found that the average DR (17 dB) was generally large in comparison with other tactile loci and of a relatively constant magnitude among subjects, even after prolonged exposure, despite a slight but significant upward drift (p < 0.001). Additionally, our results showed that as stimulus intensity increased, subjects’ ability to discriminate ETS stimuli of different intensities improved (p < 0.05) while estimation accuracy, in general, slightly decreased (increasing underestimation). These results suggest that higher ETS intensity may increase recruitment of rapidly adapting mechanoreceptor fibers, as these are specialized for coding stimulus differences rather than absolute intensities. Furthermore, our study revealed that the tongue's sensory system can effectively convey electrical stimuli despite minimal practice and when information transfer is limited by memory and DR drift.  相似文献

Gravel augmentation is often applied to rivers and streams to rehabilitate salmonid spawning and incubation habitat. However, the effect of gravel size on salmon spawning utilization and embryo survival during incubation is not well understood. We conducted an experiment on a regulated and previously mined Northern California salmonid‐bearing stream in which different sized gravel (small, medium, and large) patches were placed into the stream's degraded spawning reach. We documented Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Chinook salmon) spawning activity within the three gravel sizes for two seasons. In addition, we deployed Chinook salmon embryos into each gravel size patch and allowed them to incubate until estimated emergence time. Although all experimental gravel sizes were predicted to be within the spawning population's mobilization capabilities, model results indicated the probability of salmon building redds decreased as substrate size increased. Conversely, embryo survival increased as gravel size increased. A possible mechanism of disparate Chinook salmon embryo survival is provided by an observed decrease in embryo survival correlating with greater presence of embryo predators (leeches), which are associated with smaller gravel. Our results indicate a parent‐offspring conflict in optimal spawning gravel size for Chinook salmon, and suggest that an intermediate gravel size would maximize overall reproductive success across both spawning and incubation life stages.  相似文献
