Truffles are prized and nutrition‐rich edible hypogeous fungi. The aim of this study was a comprehensive investigation of chemical composition of Burgundy truffle (Tuber aestivum Vittad .). We tried to answer the question: what is the impact of the environment on the truffle quality. To know the nutritional value of Burgundy truffle we compared lipids, proteins, saccharides, polyphenolics, flavonoids, total sterols, ergosterol, volatile flavour and aroma compounds content in fruit bodies of the fungus collected in three different geographical regions, i.e., Poland, Slovakia, and Italy. A comparison of the above mentioned compounds is especially interesting due to environmental and climatic differences among the studied geographical regions. Results revealed that fruit bodies of Taestivum from Poland and Slovakia possessed nearly similar content of proteins, total sterols, and saccharides. The fruiting bodies from Italy contained significantly larger amounts of most of the investigated compounds. In turn, Polish specimens had higher content of lipids and polyphenolics than Slovak and Italian ones. We have found higher similarity of volatile compounds composition between Polish and Italian specimens than those of Polish and Slovak origin.

Eight propolis samples from Croatia were analyzed in detail, to study the headspace, volatiles, anti‐Varroa‐treatment residue, phenolics, and antioxidant properties. The samples exhibited high qualitative/quantitative variability of the chemical profiles, total phenolic content (1,589.3–14,398.3 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/l EtOH extract), and antioxidant activity (11.1–133.5 mmol Fe2+/l extract and 6.2–65.3 mmol TEAC (Trolox® equivalent antioxidant capacity)/l extract). The main phenolics quantified by HPLC‐DAD at 280 and 360 nm were vanillin, p‐coumaric acid, ferulic acid, chrysin, galangin, and caffeic acid phenethyl ester. The major compounds identified by headspace solid‐phase microextraction (HS‐SPME), simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE), and subsequent GC‐FID and GC/MS analyses were α‐eudesmol (up to 19.9%), β‐eudesmol (up to 12.6%), γ‐eudesmol (up to 10.5%), benzyl benzoate (up to 28.5%), and 4‐vinyl‐2‐methoxyphenol (up to 18.1%). Vanillin was determined as minor constituent by SDE/GC‐FID/MS and HPLC‐DAD. The identified acaricide residue thymol was ca. three times more abundant by HS‐SPME/GC‐FID/MS than by SDE/GC‐FID/MS and was not detected by HPLC‐DAD.

To evaluate the potential of Commelina benghalensis as a forage for ruminants, effects of plant maturity on chemical composition, rumen degradability as well as its increased dietary inclusion level on intake, digestibility and N balance in sheep fed Sorghum almum were investigated with forage obtained from the wild, re-established and harvested at 6, 10 and 14 weeks of growth. Composite herbage samples were analyzed for dry matter (DM), chemical components, total extractable phenolics (TEP) and amino acid content. In sacco rumen degradability measurements used six individually confined wethers (8 ± 0.5 months of age; 21 ± 2.6 kg live-weight (LW)) fitted with rumen cannulae and fed a ration of 3:1 fresh S. almum and Medicago sativa hay (about 1:2 on a DM basis). In sacco bags containing 5 g each of dry herbage were inserted into the rumen and withdrawn sequentially after 0, 12, 24, 36 and 48 h. Metabolizable energy (ME) was estimated from 24 h in vitro gas production. In the digestibility study, 12 wethers fitted with rumen canula were housed in metabolic crates and allotted to four treatment diets (i. e., D0, D10, D20 and D30) constituted from fresh S. almum and pre-wilted C. benghalensis in a randomized complete block design. The control diet (D0) was 3 kg fresh S. almum (≈535.5 g DM/wether/d about 30 g/kg LW), whereas D10, D20 and D30 were D0 +300, 600 or 900 g of wilted C. benghalensis (≈34, 68 or about 102 g DM/wether/d), respectively. The study lasted for 21 d. Dry matter, fibre and TEP content increased (P<0.001) with maturity of the forage, whereas those of CP and EE decreased (P<0.0001) over the same period. Amino acids (AA) also declined with maturity (P<0.05). Rumen degradability of DM and OM were unaffected, but DM intake increased linearly (P<0.0001) at a decreasing rate (Q: P<0.05) and DM digestibility (DMD) and N intake increased linearly (P<0.01 and P<0.0001, respectively) as level of C. benghalensis in the diet increased. Results indicate that advancing maturity affected chemical composition, but not rumen degradability, of C. benghalensis and also demonstrated that inclusion of C. benghalensis in S. almum diet improved intake, digestibility and N intake, suggesting its potential use as a feed supplement.

One sesquiterpene lactone – 9α-hydroxy-3-deoxyzaluzanin C, three benzopyrans: desmethoxyencecalin (6-acetyl-2,2-dimethylchromene), desacetylripariochromen B and 6-(1-hydroxyethyl)-2,2-dimethylchromene, one coumarin – scopoletin and two eugenol derivatives were isolated from the roots of Tolpis barbata (L.) Gaertn, hitherto unexamined species. In the extract from aerial parts of the plant, five known phenolic compounds, namely: esculin, esculetin, chlorogenic acid (5-CQA), luteolin 7-O-glucoside and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3,5-DCQA) were identified as major constituents. Except for the two coumarins – scopoletin and esculetin, which were previously obtained from Tolpis webbii Sch.Bip. and T. proustii Pit., the isolated and identified compounds have not been previously reported as constituents of Tolpis spp. Though benzopyrans were found in numerous species of the Asteraceae, their occurrence in the tribe Cichorieae has not been demonstrated before.

Autointoxication in residues ofAsparagus officinalis L.
Summary In a greenhouse experiment the growth of asparagus seedlings was retarded by the residue treatments in both vermiculite and sand cultures. In general, the retardation of asparagus root by residues was slightly greater than the retardation of shoot in both cultures. The retardation of the growth of asparagus seedlings by root and stem treatments was usually higher than that by old root litter. Root and stem extracts strongly inhibited the development of asparagus seedlings in the seed bioassay. The inhibition of extracts to the growth of shoot was greater than that to the growth of root. The quantities in the total phenolics and catachol type phenolics from root, stem and old root litter extracts corresponded to the autotoxicity in the seed bioassay. The soil extracts obtained from using acetone, methanol, and XAD-4 extractions strongly inhibited the shoot and root development of asparagus seedlings in the bioassay. The efficiency of phenolics extraction by the XAD-4 method was significantly higher than that by acetone and methanol extractions. The results obtained in the greenhouse experiment and bioassay revealed that phytotoxic substances present in the residues and the soil of asparagus and may be partially responsible for the asparagus replanting problems.

The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of the residue of Chenopodium murale L. on growth, nodulation and macromolecule content of two legume crops, viz., Cicer arietinum L. (chickpea) and Pisum sativum L. (pea). A significant reduction in root and shoot length as well as dry matter accumulation occurred when both the legumes were grown in the soil amended with 5, 10, 20 and 40 g residue kg−1 soil. In general, a gradual decline in growth was associated with an increasing amount of residues in the soil. There was also a significant reduction in total chlorophyll content and the amounts of protein and carbohydrates (macromolecules) in plants growing in the residue-amended soil. The nodulation was completely absent in chickpea and pea when the plants were grown in the soil amended with 10 and 20 g residue kg−1 soil, respectively. At a lower rate of residue amendment (5 g kg−1 soil), a significant decline in nodule number and weight, and leghaemoglobin content was recorded. Root oxidizability, an indirect measure of tissue viability and cellular respiration, was adversely affected in both the legumes under various treatments of residue amendment. The observed growth reduction concomitant with increased proline accumulation indicated the presence of some inhibitory compounds in the residue-amended soil. It was rich in phenolics identified as protocatechuic, ferulic, p-coumaric and syringic acid with 12.8, 30.4, 20.2 and 33.6% relative content, respectively. The results suggest that the residue of C. murale releases phenolic allelochemicals, which deleteriously affect the growth, nodulation and macromolecule content of chickpea and pea.

The cuttings of Populus cathayana were exposed to four different manganese (Mn) concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.5 and 1 mM) in a greenhouse to investigate the toxicity of Mn and the detoxifying responses of woody plants. Two contrasting populations of P. cathayana, which were from wet and dry climate regions in western China, respectively, were examined in our study. The results showed that high concentration of Mn caused significant decrease in shoot height, biomass accumulation, and leaf number and leaf areas. Injuries to the anatomical features of leaves were also found as the reduced thickness of palisade and spongy parenchyma, the decreased density in the conducting tissue and the collapse and split in the meristematic tissue in the central vein. Moreover, Mn treatments caused the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and then resulted in oxidative stress indicated by the oxidation of proteins and DNA. Many physiological responses were employed to cope with the toxicity of Mn, including the increase in the contents of non-protein thiol (NP-SH), phytochelatins (PCs) and phenolics compounds and the stimulated activities of guaiacol peroxidase (GPX) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) for the chelation of Mn and for the antioxidation of reactive oxygen species. The population from dry climate habitat showed a lower leaf concentration of Mn, higher contents of the chelators, and higher activities of GPX and PPO than did the wet climate population at the same Mn treatment, thereby possessing a superior Mn tolerance. In both populations, most of the Mn was accumulated in the shoot, which is favorable regarding phytoremediation.

Pepper plants were grown under different water and nitrogen availabilities that produced severe nitrogen limitations and mild water stress. Nitrogen limitation produced lower leaf N content, higher C:N, and higher leaf content of phenolic compounds, in consonance with the carbon/nutrient balance hypothesis. Nitrogen limitation also produced lower nutritional quality of leaves, with lower relative growth rates and lower efficiency of conversion of ingested biomass on the polyphagous herbivoreHelicoverpa armigera. The biomass gained per gram nitrogen ingested also tended to be lower in those insects feeding on nitrogen-limited plants, in parallel with their higher phenolic content. However, larvae fed on nitrogen-limited plants did not increase the ingestion of food to compensate for the N deficiency of leaves. The mild water stress, which only slightly tended to increase the phenolic content of pepper leaves, had no significant effect on nutritional indices.
