Summary In pot experiments with barley, mustard, leek, lettuce and spinach, and in a field experiment with 30 cultivars of barley uptakes of K, Mg, Ca, Na and N were studied at varying concentrations and activities of these cations in the soil solution.The sum of macro cations (K, Mg, Ca, Na) in meq per 100 g aerial plant parts were independent of the chemical composition of the soil solution, but dependent on plant species and on the N concentration in the plant.The ratios
of mean net inflows of Mg, Ca and K into plants and corresponding cation activity ratios (aMg/aCa and
) in the soil solution were linearly related and highly correlated under conditions in which growth rate and/or rate of incorporation into new tissues constituted the rate determining step of cation uptake. Consequently, mean net inflows of K, Mg and Ca were independent of ion concentration and ion activity of K, Mg or Ca in the soil solution under the conditions of constant activity ratio.The results agree with the concept that plants have a finite cation uptake capacity, and that plants are in a equilibrium-like state with the activities of K, Mg, and Ca ions in the soil solution. The results indicate that both ratios and content of exchangeable cations should be considered in our evaluation of soil test data. 相似文献

We have observed what appears to be the first significant report of herbivory of a population of Alliaria petiolata (M. Bieb.) Cavara & Grande (Garlic Mustard) in Canada. Ceutorhynchus erysimi Fabr., Plutella xylostella L. (Diamondback Moth), and Philaenus spumarius (Meadow Spittlebug) were identified attacking, and successfully proceeding through different stages of development on A. petiolata. From the field observations, we hypothesize that these species have recognized A. petiolata as a host and therefore may be candidates for the management of the invasive species. 相似文献

Effects of gibberellic acid spray on nitrogen yield efficiency of mustard grown with different nitrogen levels 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mustard is cultivated throughout the world for oil in its seeds. Itrequires high nitrogen input for improved productivity but the nitrogen appliedto the soil is not fully utilised by the crops due to various constraints. Theobjective of the reported research was to determine if foliar- appliedgibberellic acid (GA3) could enhance crop growth and increasenitrogen-use efficiency. A field experiment was conducted during 1997–98in which GA3 (10–5 M) was applied tofoliage at 40d after sowing (pre-flowering) to mustard grown with 0, 40(sub-optimal), 80 (optimal) and 120 (supra-optimal) kgN ha–1. Foliar spray of GA3 was effectiveonly when plants received sufficient N (80 kgN ha–1). GA3 sprays significantly enhancedplant dry mass, leaf area, carbon dioxide exchange rate, plant growth rate,cropgrowth rate and relative growth rate. GA3 -treated plants showedenhanced nitrogen-use efficiency through redistribution of N to seeds. 相似文献

A bacterial culture capable of utilizing products of mustard gas hydrolysis as a source of carbon was isolated from soil. This culture was tolerant to organochlorine substances in the hydrolysate. The bacterium was identified as Pseudomonas sp. The bacterium utilizes the major product of mustard gas hydrolysis, thiodiglycol, through two pathways. One involves the oxidation of the primary alcoholic groups in thiodiglycol, yielding thiodiglycolic and thioglycolic acids. The cleavage of the C-S bonds in these acids gives rise to acetate, which is then used further in the cell metabolism. The other pathway involves the cleavage of the C-S bond in the thiodiglycol molecule, yielding beta-mercaptoethanol, which is transformed by Pseudomonas sp. into thioglycolic acid. The results show the promise of this bacterium for the bioremediation of mustard gas-contaminated soils. 相似文献

Astaxanthin production in the wild strain Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous TISTR 5730 was investigated using different mustard waste media, including mustard waste residue extract (MRE), mustard waste
residue hydrolysate (MRH), mustard waste precipitated extract (MPE), and mustard waste precipitated hydrolysate (MPH). The
growth of X. dendrorhous and the production of astaxanthin were dependent on the type and initial concentrations of mustard waste media. The MPH medium
was the best substrate resulting in yields of biomass and astaxanthin of 19.6 g/L and 25.8 mg/L, respectively, under optimal
conditions. MPH medium improved astaxanthin production 11-fold compared to the commonly used commercial yeast malt medium,
and 1.3–2.1-fold compared to other mustard waste media. 相似文献

Exposure to mustard gas causes inflammatory lung diseases including acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A defect in the lung surfactant system has been implicated as a cause of ARDS. A major component of lung surfactant is dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and the major pathway for its synthesis is the cytidine diphosphocholine (CDP-choline) pathway. It is not known whether the ARDS induced by mustard gas is mediated by its direct effects on some of the enzymes in the CDP-choline pathway. In the present study we investigated whether mustard gas exposure modulates the activity of cholinephosphotransferase (CPT) the terminal enzyme by CDP-choline pathway. Adult guinea pigs were intratracheally infused with single doses of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) (0.5 mg/kg b.wt. in ethanol). Control animals were injected with vehicles only. The animals were sacrificed at different time and the lungs were removed after perfusion with physiological saline. CPT activity increased steadily up to 4 h and then decreased at 6 h and stabilized at 7 days in both mitochondria and microsomes. To determine the dose-dependent effect of CEES on CPT activity we varied the doses of CEES (0.5-6.0 mg/kg b.wt.) and sacrificed the animals at 1 h and 4 h. CPT activity showed a dose-dependent increase of up to 2.0 mg/kg b.wt. of CEES in both mitochondria and microsomes then decreased at 4.0 mg/kg b.wt. For further studies we used a fixed single dose of CEES (2.0 mg/kg b.wt.) and fixed exposure time (7 days). Lung injury was determined by measuring the leakage of iodinated-bovine serum albumin into lung tissue and expressed as the permeability index. CEES exposure (2.0 mg/kg b.wt. for 7 days) caused a significant decrease of both CPT gene expression (approximately 1.7-fold) and activity (approximately 1.5-fold) in the lung. This decrease in CPT activity was not associated with any mutation of the CPT gene. Previously we reported that CEES infusion increased the production of ceramides which are known to modulate PC synthesis. To determine whether ceramides affect microsomal CPT activity the lung microsomal fraction was incubated with different concentrations of C(2)-ceramide prior to CPT assay. CPT activity decreased significantly with increasing dose and time. The present study indicates that CEES causes lung injury and significantly decreases CPT gene expression and activity. This decrease in CPT activity was not associated with any mutation of the CPT gene is probably mediated by accumulation of ceramides. CEES induced ceramide accumulation may thus play an important role in the development of ARDS by modulating CPT enzyme. 相似文献

Boron-deficiency is prevalent in light-textured acidic soil regions receiving high precipitation. Crop use efficiency of fertiliser
B is also low under such B-leaching environments. For high leaching regimes, we hypothesised that the optimal timing and method
of B application would vary with the crop sensitivity to B-deficiency and periods of peak demand for B. The aim of the present
experiment was to vary the timing and method of B application to increase use efficiency on typical B-deficient Entisols.
Mustard (Brassica campestris L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) were the test crops. There were seven treatment combinations of B, applied either to soil or as foliar sprays at different
doses and growth stages of the crops. Biomass and yield related characters of the crops at harvest, B concentration in plants
and its uptake increased with B application being highest in mustard, followed by potato and wheat. Foliar application, in
general had higher economic benefits than soil application. Split application of B either to soil (as basal and 25 days after
sowing) or foliar sprays (at 25 and 40 and 25 and 45 days after sowing for mustard and potato, respectively) had an edge over
a single application. For wheat, a single late application of B (at 45 or 60 days after sowing through soil or foliar spray,
respectively) was more effective than the early or split application in increasing yields. Better use efficiency of B can
thus be achieved if it is applied late for wheat but in splits over a longer period for mustard and potato with higher economic

A genetic linkage map of Brassica juncea was constructed based on restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) detected by anonymous cDNA markers from B. napus, using a segregating F1-derived doubled haploid (DH) progeny from a cross between a canola-quality mustard line (J90-4317) and a high-oil-content
mustard line (J90-2733). The RFLP probes consisted of 229 cDNA probes from B. napus and a B. napus tandem repeat sequence, RDA2. The map consisted of 343 marker loci arranged in 18 major linkage groups plus five small segments
with two to five marker loci, covering a total map distance of 2073 cM. Twenty-four percent of the markers were dominant in
nature. Sixty-two percent of the marker loci were duplicated, and the majority were involved in inter-linkage group duplications,
illustrating that complex duplications and subsequent rearrangements occurred after allopolyploidy. Deviation from the Mendelian
segregation ratio for a DH population was observed for 27% of the markers. Two-thirds of these markers with a skewed segregation
were clustered in 6 linkage groups and two unassigned segments. The overall average marker interval of the B. juncea map reported here was 6.6 cM, which would provide a marker density satisfactory for efficient use of the map in breeding
applications, such as tagging of important agronomic traits and marker-assisted selection.
