Most wrasse species swim during the day and bury themselves in the sandy bottoms of shallow reefs at night. This study aimed to evaluate the importance of sandy bottoms to the day-active/night-inactive rhythmicity of the tropical wrasse Halichoeres trimaculatus. Actogram analysis revealed that fish were active during the photophase and inactive during the scotophase in aquariums with both sandy and bare bottoms. When fish were kept in aquariums with bare bottoms, rhythmicity was maintained under constant dark conditions (DD) but became obscured under constant light conditions (LL), suggesting that a day-active/night-inactive rhythmicity is regulated by the circadian system. Robust fluctuations in Period1 (wPer1) and Period2 (wPer2) expression were observed in the pectoral fin tissue under light–dark conditions (LD). Similar fluctuations in wPer1 expression persisted under DD. When fish were kept under LD conditions for 7 days and then DD for 20 days, the emergence of fish from the sandy bottom was delayed gradually. At the same time, the peak time of wPer1 expression under DD was retarded from 06:00 to 10:00. Although wPer2 expression was dampened under DD, it increased after exposing fish to light. These results suggest that wPer1 and wPer2 are differentially involved in the day-active/night-inactive rhythmicity, and that blocking light with a sandy bed at night and exposing fish to light during emergence in the morning play important roles in maintaining consistent activities in wrasse species.  相似文献

Patterns of abundance of large piscivorous fish (>200 mm TL) were documented at two spatial and four temporal scales within the main lagoon of One Tree Reef on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Grouper (Serranidae), snapper (Lutjanidae) and wrasses (Labridae) were the most abundant large piscivores. On a large scale (hundreds of metres), patterns of predator abundance were consistently greater on the inner edge than centre of the lagoon over a range of temporal scales: days, weeks, months and years. On a small spatial scale (tens of metres), the abundance of large predatory fish was patchy. At both spatial scales, fish were consistently aggregated in particular areas and associated with specific structural features of the reef habitat. Predator abundance was high where live corals were predominant and the topography was more complex. Hence, predation pressure and its potential effects on the distribution and abundance of prey populations, both in time and space, may vary greatly within lagoonal environments. Molecular tools were used to evaluate the hybrid status of a specimen with intermediate colour pattern between Halichoeres bivittatus and Halichoeres garnoti from Belize. Phylogenetic analyses of the two species, eight Halichoeres species from new and old world lineages and two outgroups showed that the study species are closely related and that H. garnoti is the maternal contributor to the putative hybrid specimen, based on partial mitochondrial COI data. Direct sequencing of Intron 1 of the nuclear ribosomal protein S7 identified H. bivittatus as sister to H. garnoti with the putative hybrid specimen in an intermediate position, due to heterozygosity at nucleotides alternatively fixed in the two putative parent species. This is consistent with the hybrid status of the specimen, with parental contributions from both H. garnoti and H. bivittatus. These results, combined with no evidence of introgression between the two parent species (based on the mtDNA and the single investigated nuclear marker) and the biogeography and ecology of these species suggests that this is a rare event with minimal evolutionary implications.  相似文献

Understanding the dynamics of open marine populations is inherently complex, and this complexity has led to decades of debate regarding the relative importance of pre- versus post-settlement processes in structuring these populations. Movement between patches may be an important modifier of patterns established at settlement, yet local immigration and emigration have received less attention than other demographic rates. I examined loss rates from tagged populations of juvenile wrasses (yellowhead wrasse Halichoeres garnoti and bluehead wrasse Thalassoma bifasciatum) at two sites in the Bahamas. Assuming that all losses were due solely to mortality would have significantly underestimated survivorship of yellowhead wrasse by 29% and bluehead wrasse by 14%. On average, per capita mortality and emigration rates were higher for yellowhead than bluehead wrasse, but neither demographic rate differed between sites for either species. With respect to within-species density, bluehead wrasse mortality was density-dependent at the patch reef site, but mortality rates of yellowhead wrasse were consistently density-independent. Evaluating the effects of between-species density, yellowhead wrasse mortality increased with a decrease in bluehead wrasse density, but this effect was limited to the patch reef site. Emigration rates were not a function of either within-species or between-species density, but instead varied inversely with isolation distance. Numerous previous studies of coral-reef fish, conducted on patch reefs separated by only a few meters of sand and often using untagged fish, may have confounded losses due to emigration with those due to mortality. A better understanding of the factors affecting emigration in marine fishes is important to their effective management using spatial tools such as marine protected areas.  相似文献

A core eco‐evolutionary aim is to better understand the factors driving the diversification of functions in ecosystems. Using phylogenetic, trophic, and functional information, we tested whether trophic habits (i.e. feeding guilds) affect lineage and functional diversification in two major radiations of reef fishes. Our results from wrasses (Labridae) and damselfishes (Pomacentridae) do not fully support the ‘dead‐end’ hypothesis that specialisation leads to reduce speciation rates because the tempo of lineage diversification did not substantially vary among guilds in both fish families. Our findings also demonstrate a tight relationship between trophic habits and functional roles held by fish in reef ecosystems, which is not associated with a variation in the tempo of functional diversification among guilds. By illustrating the pivotal importance of the generalist feeding strategy during the evolutionary history of reef fishes, our study emphasises the role of this feeding guild as a reservoir for future diversity.  相似文献

The Labridae (including wrasses, the Odacidae and the Scaridae) is a species‐rich group of perciform fishes whose members are prominent inhabitants of warm‐temperate and tropical reefs worldwide. We analyse functionally relevant morphometrics for the feeding apparatus of 130 labrid species found on the Great Barrier Reef and use these data to explore the morphological and mechanical basis of trophic diversity found in this assemblage. Morphological measurements were made that characterize the functional and mechanical properties of the oral jaws that are used in prey capture and handling, the hyoid apparatus that is used in expanding the buccal cavity during suction feeding, and the pharyngeal jaw apparatus that is used in breaking through the defences of shelled prey, winnowing edible matter from sand and other debris, and pulverizing the algae, detritus and rock mixture eaten by scarids (parrotfishes). A Principal Components Analysis on the correlation matrix of a reduced set of ten variables revealed complete separation of scarids from wrasses on the basis of the former having a small mouth with limited jaw protrusion, high mechanical advantage in jaw closing, and a small sternohyoideus muscle and high kinematic transmission in the hyoid four‐bar linkage. Some scarids also exhibit a novel four‐bar linkage conformation in the oral jaw apparatus. Within wrasses a striking lack of strong associations was found among the mechanical elements of the feeding apparatus. These weak associations resulted in a highly diverse system in which functional properties occur in many different combinations and reflect variation in feeding ecology. Among putatively monophyletic groups of labrids, the cheilines showed the highest functional diversity and scarids were moderately diverse, in spite of their reputation for being trophically monomorphic and specialized. We hypothesize that the functional and ecological diversity of labrids is due in part to a history of decoupled evolution of major components of the feeding system (i.e. oral jaws, hyoid and pharyngeal jaw apparatus) as well as among the muscular and skeletal elements of each component. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2004, 82 , 1–25.  相似文献

Acoustic signals from the bird wrasse Gomphosus varius and saddle wrasse Thalassoma duperrey were recorded on coral reefs in Hawaii. Terminal phase males in both species emit two types of pulse trains (type I and type II). Type I pulses were produced during spawning and courtship, while type II pulses were associated only with courtship behaviours. Gomphosus varius type I pulses were of lower frequency than T. duperrey type I pulses (271 v. 840 Hz) and were of narrower band. Discriminant function analyses revealed interspecific differences between type I pulse trains and individual pulses of both types. This study is the first documentation of courtship and spawning sounds in sympatric labrids and shows divergence in acoustic signals.  相似文献

Ceratomyxid parasites from the gall bladder of fishes from the family Labridae were examined for their taxonomic identity and their relatedness to other species of myxozoans. This paper describes four novel species Ceratomyxa choerodonae n. sp. from Choerodon cyanodus; Ceratomyxa cheilinae n. sp. from Cheilinus chlorourus; Ceratomyxa oxycheilinae n. sp. from Oxycheilinus digramma; and Ceratomyxa thalassomae n. sp. from Thalassoma lunare. Each species is characterised morphologically and small subunit (18 S) rDNA sequences were used in molecular phylogenetic analyses. Comparison of the small subunit rDNA sequences revealed four distinct species even though morphological differences indicated the presence of only two morphologically distinctive spore types. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that the ceratomyxids from labrid fishes did not form a clade to the exclusion of all other myxosporeans and provides evidence that host relatedness is not a good character to discriminate between species within the genus Ceratomyxa.  相似文献

The Noronha wrasse Thalassoma noronhanum was recorded cleaning 19 client fish species at Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, o. north–eastern Brazil. The preferred clients were non–dangerous, mostly planktivorous species, whereas the potentially dangerous, predatory species were rarely cleaned. T. noronhanum acts as a cleaner in two distinct ecological situations, at and outside the cleaning stations, and attends different client species in each of them. Potentially dangerous clients were mostly attended outside the cleaning stations. Many attacks and two instances of predation on the cleaner wrasse by the grouper client Cephalopholis fulva were recorded. The attacks occurred on individual wrasses foraging near the bottom outside the cleaning stations.  相似文献
