The introduction of genetically modified, herbicide-tolerant, oilseed rape into the agricultural environment will have ramifications beyond weed control of the crop. Herbicide-tolerant rape will undoubtedly become part of established volunteer weed populations that occur in many cereal rotations, but its longevity in these populations and its impact as a weed and contaminant of future oilseed rape crops is uncertain. A life cycle model of volunteer oilseed rape was therefore constructed, incorporating existing information on physiological processes such as emergence pattern, longevity of buried seed, death rates of various structures and flowering and seeding as functions of density. The model was designed to allow interaction with control factors such as harvesting efficiency, herbicide treatment, ploughing and the sequence of crops in the rotation. Many of the physiological parameters (including seed decay rates, fecundity at high density) are uncertain, simply through lack of information in the appropriate context. Other parameters such as harvesting efficiency and herbicide kill rates, are inherently variable in farming. Accordingly, a Monte-Carlo approach, in which the model was run many times with different random realisations of parameter sets, was used to expose factors to which the seedbank was sensitive. Sets of 1250 realisations were compared for each of two extreme conditions: where herbicide could be used according to current intensive farming practice and where it was not an option (representing total herbicide tolerance). Modelled seedbank numbers after 5 yr ranged from 10-3to 104m-2, realistic values found in arable soils. The use of herbicide, together with efficient harvesting of seed, clearly has an important suppressive effect on the oilseed rape seedbank, keeping it lower than 102m-2(a typical sowing rate) after 5 yr in more than 80% of realisations. In the absence of herbicide, seedbanks were invariably greater, but their absolute value depended strongly on harvesting efficiency and the extent to which high density of plants suppressed fecundity. Analysis of the time series from the simulations showed that the seedbank levels fluctuated by orders in magnitude from year to year in the absence of herbicide use. The sensitivity analysis of the life-cycle model led to the development of a simplified model for the seedbank dynamics. The model shows that the essential features of the dynamics result from an interaction between density-dependent fecundity and the perturbations due to management. Therefore predictions of the effect of herbicide tolerance on seedbank dynamics are highly uncertain without knowledge of the density dependence of fecundity. Furthermore, the sensitivity to management practices suggests that seedbank levels will be substantially more difficult to control if the efficacy of herbicide is compromised. It is concluded that the model and Monte-Carlo approach have many potential uses in exploring the effects of management, cultivar physiology and the nature of the transgenes.

Host plant quality for insects used in weed biological control influences their performance and hence their ability to suppress target host populations. Determining the specific response of these insects to the quality of their host is important because phytophagous insects have variable tolerances of the different constituents of host plant quality, most notably dietary nitrogen (N), but also other physical and chemical components. The invasive aquatic weed Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle (Hydrocharitaceae) was cultivated under varying nutrient conditions to determine the influence of plant quality on immature survival, development, larval mining, reproductive output and adult longevity of a leaf-mining fly Hydrellia purcelli Deeming (Diptera: Ephydridae). Additionally, field-collected H. verticillata was included in the investigations to assess the potential performance of H. purcelli in the field. Variation in plant tissue N and phosphorus (P) concentrations had no effects on larval survival, female fecundity, or adult longevity, but high levels of N and P were associated with reduced immature development times and higher body mass of females. Overall, plant quality factors not measured in this study appeared to have a greater impact on the performance of the fly, rather than dietary N and P. The results provided insights into optimal mass-rearing conditions for H. purcelli and the potential performance of the fly in the field in South Africa. Furthermore, the results demonstrate the importance of considering other aspects of plant quality for insect agents, in addition to dietary N and P, when developing mass-rearing protocols or predicting their potential impact in the field.

Pine plantations of the southeastern USA are regional carbon (C) sinks. In spite of large increases in woody biomass due to advanced growing systems, studies have shown little or even negative effects on the C content of the extremely sandy soils of this region. Hence, it is important to understand the mechanisms that determine the impact of intensive forest management on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration. This study was conducted to examine the C profile in a 4-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantation managed under two levels of management intensity (chemical understory control and fertilizer inputs). Soil organic C and nitrogen (N) pools were evaluated using two size fractionation methods, dry and wet sieving (2000–250 μm, 250–150 μm, 150–53 μm and <53 μm). Dry sieving was preferred over wet sieving for soil size fractionation, as it preserved more structure and water-soluble SOC components such as esters and amides and did not affect the N distribution. Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) spectra were used to examine the chemical composition of the size fractions, which showed the presence of recently added organic matter in the largest sand fraction, as well as more decomposed organic matter in the <53 μm fraction. Intensive forest management reduced SOC in all three 2000–53 μm fractions, most likely due to reduced root input of understory plants that were controlled using herbicides. The 2000–250 μm fractions contained nearly half of the total SOC and showed a 23% decrease in C content due to the intensive management regime. Results from this study indicated the significance and responsiveness of sand size SOC fractions in Florida Spodosols. Results also showed that reductions in SOC due to intensive management occurred after four years and highlighted the need to understand the long-term impacts and the mechanisms responsible. The effect of feeding by the armored scale, Rhizaspidiotus donacis (Leonardi, 1920) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) on the growth of the plant Arundo donax L. (Poaceae) was evaluated under field conditions in its native range. The study was designed to evaluate the impact of R. donacis, a candidate agent for biological control of A. donax which is invasive in arid riparian ecosystems of the Southwestern USA and Mexico. The study was carried out at five A. donax sites in the Province of Alicante, Spain, differing in altitude and climate. At each site, 30 infested lateral shoots were selected and 15 were randomly treated monthly with imidacloprid insecticide. Shoot lengths were measured monthly over a 1-year period in a comparative growth analysis. Shoots infested with R. donacis had an over 2-fold reduced growth rate as compared to treated shoots. Growth of shoots varied by site, and the effect of R. donacis on growth was most pronounced in the late spring, when mature females produced first instar scale crawlers. The impact of R. donacis on A. donax growth under field conditions in the native range, combined with its narrow host specificity, indicate that R. donacis is a promising candidate for biological control of A. donax in North America and other areas invaded by this weed.

Variation in the width of 'safety zones' for sheep and dairy pasture treated with a Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary-based mycoherbicide was quantified using 10 years of climate data from each of five regions in New Zealand. Acceptable and risk-averse zones were defined as the maximum distances in any direction from a treated pasture where 'added:natural' ratios of air-borne S. sclerotiorum spores are 1:1 and 1:10, respectively. The 10-year mean 1:1 safety zone had zero width for sheep pasture at all locations, and was at most, 50 m wide for dairy pasture. The width of the 10-year mean 1:10 zone varied regionally from 314 to 443 m for sheep and from 175 to 280 m for dairy pasture, and the 90th percentile 1:10 zones were up to 41% wider. Linear relationships between safety zone width and mean wind speed were evident and these could be used to derive region-specific safety zones.

Suggestions that novel, non‐food, dedicated biomass crops used to produce bioenergy may provide opportunities to diversify and reinstate biodiversity in intensively managed farmland have not yet been fully tested at the landscape scale. Using two of the largest, currently available landscape‐scale biodiversity data sets from arable and biomass bioenergy crops, we take a taxonomic and functional trait approach to quantify and contrast the consequences for biodiversity indicators of adopting dedicated biomass crops on land previously cultivated under annual, rotational arable cropping. The abundance and community compositions of biodiversity indicators in fields of break and cereal crops changed when planted with the dedicated biomass crops, miscanthus and short rotation coppiced (SRC) willow. Weed biomass was consistently greater in the two dedicated biomass crops than in cereals, and invertebrate abundance was similarly consistently higher than in break crops. Using canonical variates analysis, we identified distinct plant and invertebrate taxa and trait‐based communities in miscanthus and SRC willows, whereas break and cereal crops tended to form a single, composite community. Seedbanks were shown to reflect the longer term effects of crop management. Our study suggests that miscanthus and SRC willows, and the management associated with perennial cropping, would support significant amounts of biodiversity when compared with annual arable crops. We recommend the strategic planting of these perennial, dedicated biomass crops in arable farmland to increase landscape heterogeneity and enhance ecosystem function, and simultaneously work towards striking a balance between energy and food security.

In coastal areas of Australia, there are extensive infestations of the environmental weed Chrysanthemoides monilifera ssp. rotundata (bitou bush). This study looked at the impact of long-term infestations on the abundance and assemblage composition of leaf litter invertebrates. Assemblages were compared in weed infested and native shrublands along the New South Wales coastline over 12 months. The total abundance was not significantly reduced in the weedy habitat but the abundance of mites, thrips, spiders, ants, and centipedes was reduced at many sites. The invertebrate assemblages also differed between habitats, with the C. monilifera supporting a lower diversity of beetles. However, the millipedes, amphipods, earthworms, pseudoscorpions and isopods appeared to respond positively to the invasion, occurring in higher abundance and detected more frequently in the weedy areas. This has been partially attributed to a change in microclimate within the C. monilifera infestations. It is generally moister and darker, which these invertebrates tend to prefer. Secondly, C. monilifera produces less leaf litter of higher quality, and possibly higher palatability than the native sclerophyllous vegetation, which may encourage species that consume litter.
