Summary Structural features of the principal, urine-secreting cells (type 1 cells) of the Malpighian tubules of Carausius are de scribedquantitatively and discussed in relation to possible mechanisms of water and solute transport. Mitochondria are arranged in two bands of about equal volume near to the basal and apical surfaces, suggesting active processes occur at both surfaces. Basal infoldings and apical microvilli which greatly amplify the cell surface are probably primarily devices to increase the passive permeability of the tissue to solutes. They do not provide functionally significant standing-osmotic-gradients. The extensive endoplasmic reticulum is locally differentiated into several components and ramifies between the infoldings and along microvilli but probably is not an intracellular conduit for the majority of urinary constituents. Vesicles and stages in their formation or liberation are observed both basally and apically although they probably do not contribute significantly to transcellular transport. At present it remains a problem to satisfactorily account for observations that the urine of Carausius can be hypotonic.This investigation formed part of a dissertation for the degree of Ph. Summary By use of a specific antiserum against synthetic ovine corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) immunocytochemical procedure (Vandesande and Dierickx 1976), CRF-like antigenic determinants were demonstrated in the central nervous system of a human fetus, the Wistar rat, the frog Rana ridibunda, and the American cockroach Periplaneta americana. The immunoreactive CRF-producing cells occur mainly in the nucleus paraventricularis of the rat, while in Rana ridibunda these cells occur in the nucleus praeopticus. Immunoreactive CRF-containing fibres were also visualized. Very clear CRF-immunoreactive products were observed in the brain as well as the corpora cardiaca (CC) and corpora allata (CA) of the cockroach Periplaneta americana. ACTH-immunoreactivity was also demonstrated in the brain-CC-CA complex of this insect. Double immunohistochemical staining (Vandesande 1983) also revealed that both the CRFand ACTH-like substances occur in different neurosecretory neurons and nerve fibres. These results suggest that the antigenic determinants of CRF are very similar in vertebrates and insects bespeaking their very long evolutionary history.  相似文献

Summary A large DNA containing body is found in oocytes of the house cricket, Acheta domesticus. Little or no RNA synthesis is associated with the DNA body during the leptotene, zygotene, and pachytene stages of meiotic prophase I. During the early diplotene stage of development, large masses of nucleolar material begin to accumulate at the periphery of the DNA body. The onset of RNA synthesis correlates with a change in the histochemically detectable histone proteins associated with the DNA body. In ovaries of animals injected with uridine-H3, most of the label accumulates in ribosomal RNA. Autoradiographic studies show that the cytoplasm of late diplotene stage cells accumulates uridine label to a greater extent than does the cytoplasm of early diplotene stage cells. 为了探索精准、简易的昆虫呼吸代谢测定办法,本文基于Sable小动物呼吸测量系统,比较了应用Sable呼吸测量系统配置的8通道气路转换器呼吸室和采用鲁尔接头注射器作为替代呼吸室测试昆虫的呼吸代谢。结果表明:应用测量系统自带呼吸室和应用替代呼吸室检测棉铃虫蛹O_2消耗量(前者为0.2425(±0.0143) mL/g·h,后者为0.2389(±0.0146) mL/g·h)和CO_2释放量(前者为0.1562(±0.0098) mL/g·h,后者为0.1639(±0.0092) mL/g·h),两种测试方法无显著差异。与采用系统配置8通道气路转换器和自带呼吸室每测试7个样本耗时2.30 h相比较,应用替代呼吸室测试21个样本仅耗时2.75 h,明显节省测试时间。应用替代呼吸室,从呼出二氧化碳动态亦可以区分黑纹粉蝶不同虫态或不同发育状态的呼吸代谢差异。通过对两种测试方法的分析,推荐应用鲁尔接头注射器作为替代呼吸室的改进方法进行昆虫呼吸代谢生理的研究。  相似文献

Odonata are usually regarded as one of the most ancient extant lineages of winged insects. Their copulatory apparatus and mating behavior are unique among insects. Male damselflies use their caudal appendages to clasp the female's prothorax during both copulation and egg-laying and have a secondary copulatory apparatus for sperm transfer. Knowledge of the functional morphology of the male caudal appendages is the basis for understanding the evolution of these structures in Odonata and respective organs in other insects. However, it is still not exactly known how the zygopteran claspers work. In this study, we applied micro-computed tomography and a variety of microscopy techniques to examine the morphology, surface microstructure, cuticle material composition and muscle topography of the male caudal appendages of Ischnura elegans. The results indicate that the closing of the paraproctal claspers is mainly passive. This indirect closing mechanism is very likely supported by high proportions of the elastic protein resilin present in the cuticle of the paraproctal bases. In addition, the prothoracic morphology of the female plays an important role in the indirect closing of the male claspers. Our data indicate that both structures – the male claspers and the female prothoracic hump – function together like a snap-fastener.  相似文献

Mary Jane West-Eberhard has suggested that plasticity may be of primary importance in promoting evolutionary innovation and diversification. Here, we explore the possibility that the diversification of phytophagous insects may have occurred through such a process, using examples from nymphalid butterflies. We discuss the ways in which host plant range is connected to plasticity and present our interpretation of how West-Eberhard’s scenario may result in speciation driven by plasticity in host utilization. We then review some of the evidence that diversity of plant utilization has driven the diversification of phytophagous insects and finally discuss whether this suggests a role for plasticity-driven speciation. We find a close conceptual connection between our theory that the diversification of phytophagous insects has been driven by oscillations in host range, and our personal interpretation of the most efficient way in which West-Eberhard’s theory could account for plasticity-driven speciation. A major unresolved issue is the extent to which a wide host plant range is due to adaptive plasticity with dedicated modules of genetic machinery for utilizing different plants.  相似文献

为确定独叶草(Kingdonia uniflora)不育雄蕊、花被片和可育雄蕊对传粉昆虫和传粉的影响,分别进行去除不育雄蕊(A组),去除花被片(B组),去除可育雄蕊(C组)和对照组(D组)处理。结果表明:昆虫访花频率分别为A组0.4次/h、B组0次/h、C组0.9次/h、D组2.2次/h;被授粉花朵百分比分别为A组29.09%、B组40.38%、C组70.91%、D组91.67%;被授粉心皮百分比分别为A组17.77%、B组20.94%、C组为40.58%、D组为75.27%。与对照组相比,处理后被授粉花朵百分比、被授粉心皮百分比下降幅度均为A组〉B组〉C组。结合昆虫访花频率与不育雄蕊蜜汁的分泌量呈正比,可确定不育雄蕊产生的蜜汁是吸引昆虫访花的最主要因素。花被片为昆虫取食提供停歇的平台,可育雄蕊与花被片产生的色差及可育雄蕊提供的花粉,是吸引昆虫的辅助因素。  相似文献

The results of computing the structure of the resistant and susceptible stands bear evidence that in a resistant one, about 20% trees have low resistance and compose a limited trophical niche of the pest. The checking up of this suggestion conducted in a region with different ecological conditions (the central part of Ukraine), confirms it. Hence, a resistant stand must consist of a definite level of the resistant pine groups rather than exclusively resistant ones even at polygenic control the resistance. We have conducted the systematization of information from observations as to the damage scale of the pine and a number of cultured plant species by specialized pest insects. The aim of this systematization is the checking up of the regularity of the structure of resistant stands of the pine and cultured plants that are damage‐resistant. The analysis of the study's results bears evidence of the presence of the determined regularity in the structure of resistant biocenoses independent of species or varieties of the plants and also the specialized pests.  相似文献

Non-indigenous species cause great damage worldwide. Non-indigenous insects are known as harmful in many regions, but few comprehensive works have investigated non-indigenous insects as a group. We compiled a comprehensive database of established non-indigenous (ENI) insects in Israel and adjacent regions to investigate how they arrived, their biological characteristics, and the attributes of areas they invade. Of 218 species of ENI insects in this region, 124 are widespread. Most species came as stowaways, but 38 were brought intentionally for biological control. Most ENI insects in this region are in the Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, and Homoptera. Species from various orders differ in their tendency to be localized or widespread, and in biogeographic origins. The distribution of species among orders differs between native and ENI insects. The Coastal Plain houses the most ENI insect species and the Negev and Judean deserts the fewest. Most ENI insects spread from the Coastal Plain to other regions. Absence of roads, settlements and presence of nature reserves are negatively correlated with occurrence of ENI species. Seventy-nine species are categorized as pests that damage produce, merchandise, forestry, etc. Despite a general dearth of knowledge on impacts of ENI insects on natural systems, 42 species are known to feed on native plants, some of conservation concern. Biological control agents are usually more limited in their distribution than other ENI insects. Further research, legislation, and enforcement are required to minimize effects of these species on agriculture and natural habitats.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of the rectal papillae of the parasitoid hymenopteran, Nasonia vitripennis (Walk), is described. These organs in this insect consist of four distinct cell types arranged as a closed, hollow cone. The majority of the cells are present in the raised cone, and are characterised by large numbers of mitochondria arranged in a membranous labyrinth. A series of cells form a collar around the base of the cone. Junction cells have been identified which are present at the point of insertion of the cone into the rectal epithelium. The base of the cone consists of cells with elaborately folded plasma membranes facing both the central cavity of the cone, and the haemolymph. The structure of this rectal papilla is compared with those found in other insects.We are indebted to Professor E. W.
