Here, we describe the synthesis of two new fluorescent derivatives of thiamethoxam and compared their toxicity on aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum and their mode of action on insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors expressed on the sixth abdominal ganglion. The compound 3 with two 2-chlorothiazole moieties was found to be more toxic using toxicological bioassays 24 h and 48 h after exposure while compound 4 appeared more active using cockroach ganglionic depolarization. Interestingly, thiamethoxam appeared more effective than component 3 and 4, respectively. Our results demonstrated that component 3 and 4 act as agonists of insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.  相似文献

The article describes the effects of channelization on selected water quality parameters and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in four Big Black River (Mississippi, USA) tributaries crossing the Natchez Trace Parkway [U.S. National Park Service (NPS)]. Two of the streams were unchannelized (Little Bywy Creek and McCurtain Creek), and two were channelized (Big Bywy Creek and Middle Bywy Creek). Lignite mining occurs in the headwaters of Little Bywy Creek and Middle Bywy Creek. During this 3-year study, benthic macroinvertebrates were collected monthly from all four streams using Hester-Dendy Multiple plate samplers, and enumerated taxonomically and functionally. Hypotheses were tested using analyses of variance. Relationships were determined using multivariate analyses. Relative abundances of mayflies (Ephemeroptera), stoneflies (Plecoptera), caddisflies (Trichoptera) and aquatic beetles (Coleoptera) were associated with moderate to high conductivity, alkalinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen. Hellgrammites (Megaloptera), midges, blackflies, and mosquitoes (Diptera), crayfish (Crustacea: Decapoda) and leeches (Annelida: Hirudinea) were associated with lower values for these parameters. These patterns reflected seasonal rather than spatial variation (i.e., among the streams). Invertebrate assemblage composition was similar among the four streams with respect to functional groups. Invertebrate relative abundances in the two channelized streams were approximately half those of the unchannelized streams. Macroinvertebrate species richness was greater in unchannelized streams. Environmental indices categorized all four streams as having fair to good condition. Queensland fruit fly [Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt), Diptera, Tephritidae] is the most devastating insect pest impacting Australian horticulture. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is an important component of tephritid pest management programs. However, mass‐rearing and irradiation (to render insects sterile) may reduce the fitness and performance of the insect, including the ability of sterile males to successfully compete for wild females. Manipulation of the gut microbiome, including the supplementation with bacterial probiotics shows promise for enhancing the quality of mass‐reared sterile flies, however there are fewer published studies targeting the larval stage. In this study, we supplemented the larval stage of mass‐reared B. tryoni with bacterial probiotics. We tested several individual bacteria that had been previously isolated and characterized from the gut of wild B. tryoni larvae including Asaia sp., Enterobacter sp., Lactobacillus sp., Leuconostoc sp. We also tested a consortium of all four of these bacterial isolates. The fitness parameters tested included adult survival in field cages, laboratory mate selection of bacteria supplemented males by bacteria nonsupplemented females, and laboratory locomotor activity of adult flies. None of the bacterial probiotic treatments in the current study was significantly different to the control for field survival, mate selection or locomotor activity of adult B. tryoni, which agree with some of the other studies regarding bacterial probiotics fed to the larval stage of tephritids. Future work is needed to determine if feeding the same, and/or other probiotics to adults, as opposed to larvae can positively impact survival, mating performance, mating competitiveness and locomotor activity of B. tryoni. The bacterial group(s) and function of bacterial species that increase fitness and competitiveness is also of interest to tephritid mass‐rearing programs.  相似文献

Abstract. Habitat fragmentation affects both plants and pollinators. Habitat fragmentation leads to changes in species richness, population number and size, density, and shape, thus to changes in the spatial arrangement of flowers. These changes influence the amount of food for flower-visiting insects and the quantity and quality of pollinations. Seed set in small populations is often reduced and genetic variation is expected but not always found to be low. The majority of studies show that low flower densities have reduced pollination success and higher inbreeding. Density effects are stronger than size effects. Most studies concluded that species richness in flower-visiting insects is directly related to richness in plant species. However, the consequences of low insect species richness for pollination are not always clear, depending on the studied pollinator-plant relationship. The effects of the presence of simultaneously flowering species are highly dependent on the circumstances and may range from competition to facilitation. Other flowering plant species may play a role as stepping stones or corridor in the connection between populations. In the absence of stepping stones even short distances between populations act as strong barriers for gene flow. We illustrate the present review paper with own data collected for three plant species, rare in The Netherlands: Phyteuma spicatum ssp. nigrum (Campanulaceae), Salvia pratensis (Labiatae) and Scabiosa columbaria (Dipsacaceae). The species differ in their breeding systems and in the assemblage of visitor species. Data are shown on the effects of population size on species richness with consequences for seed set. Effects of flower density and isolation on pollen exchange are given. Since plant reproduction depends on the behaviour of individual insects and not on the overall behaviour of the species, the examples all point to individual insects and extrapolate to effects at the species level.  相似文献

Abstract

Circadian rhythms are endogenous, and synchronize biological functions at the most suited time of the day. Insects like other organism display a wide array of circadian functions, which are controlled by a central timing system, in coordination with the peripheral clocks found in many tissues. Many insect behaviours including locomotion, courtship, mating, egg laying and photoperiodism, are influenced by the circadian systems. In this mini-review, we briefly describe the involvement of circadian clocks in various physiological processes and correlate their functions in insect life, focusing on lepidopteran pests (major group of Indian crop pests) and discuss their role(s) in the development of effective pest management strategy.  相似文献

Summary Type 2 cells, or mucocytes, are present in both inferior and superior Malpighian tubules ofCarausius morosus and are concentrated towards the distal ends of the main urine-secreting parts. They are absent from the proximal few millimetres of the main part and from the distal specialised regions of the tubules. They possess numerous Golgi bodies and abundant granular E. R., which is consistent with the hypothesis that they secrete mucus. However, they possess basal infoldings and apical microvilli suggesting that they may transport substances across the tubule wall. It is suggested that they perform both functions. Reabsorption of ions or water could precipitate solid components of the urine (e.g., uric acid). Mucus may be important in nucleation of crystalline material and also prevent abrasion of the brush border.This investigation formed part of a thesis for the degree of Ph.D. in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Arctic shrubs have a strong potential for climate and environmental reconstructions in the chronically understudied regions of the high northern latitudes. The climate dynamics of these regions are important to understand because of large-scale feedbacks to the global climate system. However, little is known about other factors influencing shrub ring growth, possibly obscuring their climate signal. For example, as of yet we are not able to differentiate between herbivory or climatically induced growth depressions. Here, we use one of the most common Arctic shrubs, Alnus viridis as a test case to address this question. We sampled Alnus in Kobbefjord, Greenland, measured shrub-ring width and cell wall thickness and built site chronologies of each parameter. We analysed climate-growth relationships, tested their stability over time and employed a pointer-year analysis to detect growth depressions. We employed bootstrapped transfer function stability tests (BTFS) to assess the suitability of our shrub chronologies for climate reconstruction. Correlations with climate data showed strong significantly positive and stable correlations between summer temperature and ring-width with the exception of the recent decade. A climate reconstruction model failed stability tests, when the complete period of record was used for calibration and verification. Wood anatomy analysis uncovered the occurrence of unusual cell structure (very thin cell walls) in the exceptionally narrow ring of 2004, a recorded insect outbreak year in other parts of Greenland. When excluding the affected ring and a recovery period, the reconstruction model passed all tests, suggesting that the unusual 2004 ring was not climate driven, but rather the result of an insect attack. When combining anatomical analysis with traditional ring-width measurements, we move a step further in potentially distinguishing small rings caused by insect attacks from small rings formed in climatically challenging years. While this study does not provide unambiguous evidence, it does provide potential useful methodological combinations to enable more robust climate reconstructions in areas where climatic records are extremely sparse.  相似文献
