QTL for stem sugar-related and other agronomic traits were identified in a converted sweet (R9188) × grain (R9403463-2-1)
sorghum population. QTL analyses were conducted using phenotypic data for 11 traits measured in two field experiments and
a genetic map comprising 228 SSR and AFLP markers grouped into 16 linkage groups, of which 11 could be assigned to the 10
sorghum chromosomes (SBI-01 to SBI-10). QTL were identified for all traits and were generally co-located to five locations
(SBI-01, SBI-03, SBI-05, SBI-06 and SBI-10). QTL alleles from R9188 were detected for increased sucrose content and sugar
content on SBI-01, SBI-05 and SBI-06. R9188 also contributed QTL alleles for increased Brix on SBI-05 and SBI-06, and increased
sugar content on SBI-03. QTL alleles from R9403463-2-1 were found for increased sucrose content and sucrose yield on SBI-10,
and increased glucose content on SBI-07. QTL alleles for increased height, later flowering and greater total dry matter yield
were located on SBI-01 of R9403463-2-1, and SBI-06 of R9188. QTL alleles for increased grain yield from both R9403463-2-1
and R9188 were found on SBI-03. As an increase in stem sugars is an important objective in sweet sorghum breeding, the QTL
identified in this study could be further investigated for use in marker-assisted selection of sweet sorghum. 相似文献

Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) is a type of cultivated sorghums and has been recognized widely as potential alternative source of bio-fuel because of
its high fermentable sugar content in the stalk. A substantial variation of sugar content and related traits is known to exist
in US sweet sorghum. The objectives of the study were to assess the genetic diversity and relationship among the US sweet
sorghum cultivars and lines using SSR markers and to examine the genetic variability within sweet sorghum accessions for sugar
content. Sixty-eight sweet sorghum and four grain sorghum cultivars and lines were genotyped with 41 SSR markers that generated
132 alleles with an average of 3.22 alleles per locus. Polymorphism information content (PIC) value, a measure of gene diversity,
was 0.40 with a range of 0.03–0.87. The genetic similarity co-efficient was estimated based on the segregation of the 132
SSR alleles. Clustering analysis based on the genetic similarity (GS) grouped the 72 sorghum accessions into 10 distinct clusters.
Grouping based on clustering analysis was in good agreement with available pedigree and genetic background information. The
study has revealed the genetic relationship of cultivars with unknown parentage to those with known parentage. A number of
diverse pairs of sweet sorghum accessions were identified which were polymorphic at many SSR loci and significantly different
for sugar content as well. Information generated from this study can be used to select parents for hybrid development to maximize
the sugar content and total biomass, and development of segregating populations to map genes controlling sugar content in

Liriomyza sativae was displaced by L. trifolii in the USA probably due to the lower insecticide susceptibility of L. trifolii, but L. trifolii was displaced by L. sativae in Japan. To know the possible causes of the species displacement observed in Japan, differences in the insecticide susceptibility,

Selective inhibition of carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzyme is an active area of research for medicinal chemists. In the current account, a hybrid pharmacophore approach was employed to design sulfonamide, amide and amine containing new series of potent carbonic anhydrase II inhibitors. The aromatic fragment associated with pharmacophore was altered suitably in order to find effective inhibitors of CA-II. All the derivatives 4a-4m showed better inhibition compared to the standard acetazolamide. In particular, compound 4l exhibited significant inhibition with IC50 value of 0.01796 ± 0.00036 µM. The chemo-informatics analysis justified that all the designed compounds possess <10 HBA and <5 HBD. The ligands-protein binding analyses showed that 4l confined in the active binding pocket with three hydrogen bonds observed with His63, Asn66 and Thr197 residues. 相似文献

In this communication we report a serendipitously discovered hybrid molecule 1, combining fragment of 3 (an in vivo active antileishmanial molecule) with H2S donor moiety (known for bimodal behavior of cytoprotection and apoptosis), as antileishmanial agent. Compound 1 suppresses 99.82% parasitemia of L. donovani infected macrophages at 12.5 μg/ml without even deforming them (CC50 > 100 μg/ml). This compound appears cytotoxic for intracellular amastigotes while cytoprotective to host macrophages. The concept can be utilized to develop high therapeutic index NCE (New Chemical Entities) for other macrophage mediated diseases like tuberculosis and cancer. 相似文献

Bacteria causing mottled stripe disease in sugar cane, known asPseudomonas rubrisubalbicans, were shown to be able to fix molecular N2 and to grow on it. The root associated diazotroph known asHerbaspirillum seropedicae, after artificial inoculation caused mottled stripe disease symptoms on sorghum and Napier grass but not on sugar cane. Both bacteria could be reisolated from leaves even 60 days after. Sugar cane leaves contained large numbers of these bacteria even in the uninoculated controls. Silicate minerals are dominant soil components. Thus, plant roots are constantly exposed to silicic acid. High silicon intake, enabled by root silicon transporters, correlates with increased tolerance to many biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the underlying protection mechanisms are largely unknown. Here, we tested the hypothesis that silicon interacts with the plant hormones, and specifically, that silicic acid intake increases cytokinin biosynthesis. The reaction of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and Arabidopsis plants, modified to absorb high versus low amounts of silicon, to dark‐induced senescence was monitored, by quantifying expression levels of genes along the senescence pathway and measuring tissue cytokinin levels. In both species, detached leaves with high silicon content senesced more slowly than leaves that were not exposed to silicic acid. Expression levels of genes along the senescence pathway suggested increased cytokinin biosynthesis with silicon exposure. Mass spectrometry measurements of cytokinin suggested a positive correlation between silicon exposure and active cytokinin concentrations. Our results indicate a similar reaction to silicon treatment in distantly related plants, proposing a general function of silicon as a stress reliever, acting via increased cytokinin biosynthesis. 相似文献

- Near isogenic lines (NILs) of sweet sorghum genotype S35 into which individual stay green loci were introgressed, were used to understand the contribution of Stay green loci to stem sugar accumulation and its remobilization under drought stress exposure.
- Sugar and starch content, activities of sugar metabolism enzymes and levels of their expression were studied in the 3rd (source) leaf from panicle and the 5th (sugar storing) internode of the three lines, in irrigated plants and in plants exposed to a brief drought exposure at the panicle emergence stage. Annotation of genes in the respective Stay green loci introgressed in the NILs was carried out using bioinformatics tools.
- The leaves of NILs accumulated more photoassimilates and the internodes accumulated more sugar, as compared to the parent S35 line. Drought stress exposure led to a decrease in the starch and sugar levels in leaves of all three lines, while an increase in sugar levels was observed in internodes of the NILs. Sugar fluxes were accompanied by alterations in the activities of sugar metabolizing enzymes as well as the expression of genes related to sugar metabolism and transport.
- Remobilization of sugars from the stem internodes was apparent in the NILs when subjected to drought stress, since the peduncle, which supports the panicle, showed an increase in the sugar content, even when photoassimation in source leaves was reduced. Several genes related to carbohydrate metabolism were located in the Stay green loci, which probably contributed to variation in the parameters studied.

In order to search for novel multifunctional anti-Alzheimer agents, a series of ferulic acid–carbazole hybrid compounds were designed and synthesized. Ellman’s assay revealed that the hybrid compounds showed moderate to potent inhibitory activity against the cholinesterases. Particularly, the AChE inhibition potency of compound 5k (IC50 1.9 μM) was even 5-fold higher than that of galantamine. In addition, the target compounds showed pronounced antioxidant ability and neuroprotective property, especially against the ROS-induced toxicity. Notably, the neuroprotective effect of 5k was obviously superior to that of the mixture of ferulic acid and carbazole, indicating the therapeutic effect of the hybrid compound is better than the combination administration of the corresponding mixture. 相似文献
