Abstract The body temperatures of six apterous species of Namib Desert tenebrionid beetles were measured continuously with indwelling thermocouples under laboratory conditions and in the field. The range of body temperatures selected was within the upper half of their 'tolerated range', which we defined as the temperatures lying between measured critical thermal maximum and critical thermal minimum. In the field, individuals also maintained their body temperatures within the upper half of the 'tolerated range'. These beetles maintained higher body temperatures than those recorded for any other ectothermic insect. Three of the six species maintained lower body temperatures in the field than they selected in the laboratory. The other three species showed no significant difference between field and laboratory body temperatures. We conclude that these beetles are not forced by biotic or abiotic factors to adopt thermal niches which present them with physiological difficulties.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on conduction velocity in human muscle fibers   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The effects of variation of intramuscular temperature (T) on conduction velocity (CV) of the action potential along single human muscle fibers of the biceps brachii was studied in situ in 15 normal volunteers (mean age 39 years, range 21–62 years). Cooling was obtained by direct application of ice over a rectangular skin region including the stimulating and recording area. The intramuscular T was monitored by a needle thermocouple (copperconstantane). In all the 24 muscle fibers studied, a linear relationship was observed between CV and T. The slopes of the regression lines, ranging between 0.190 and 0.079 m/s, were positively correlated with the starting CV at 36°C ranging between 2.2 and 5.2 m/s. If conduction changes are expressed as a percentage of the basal CV at 36°C, the CV/T coefficient is the same for all the fibers and independent of the individual CV: 3.4% of CV/°C.  相似文献

In enzymatic hydrolysis, high lignocellulose loadings are required to obtain high sugar titers. However, the high solids loadings limit enzymatic hydrolysis. In this study, to overcome this limitation, the promoting and synergistic effects of the accessory agents of hemicellulase (i.e., Cellic HTec2) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 8000 were investigated in the enzymatic hydrolysis of hydrothermally pretreated empty fruit bunches (EFBs). After the optimal addition of Cellic HTec2 and PEG, high enzymatic digestion of the pretreated EFBs was achieved owing to their synergistic effects, even at high solids loadings. For example, the enzymatic digestibility of pretreated EFBs at a 21.7% (w/v) solids loading with 10 FPU of Cellic CTec2/g glucan reached 72.5% when 2.7 mg of Cellic HTec2/g glucan and 62.5 mg of PEG/g glucan were used as the accessory agents. These results suggested that the optimal addition of accessory agents is effective for the enhanced hydrolysis of lignocellulose using even a commercial cellulase preparation.  相似文献

In this research, a proto-type study we have conducted, where we have synthesized tungsten based composite materials which are tungsten along with combined oxides of other elements like calcium, scandium, barium, and aluminium in the form of powder with bones powder of mice devised by high energy ball mill and later on fabricating high dense pellets by sintering by spark plasma. The particle sizes of the composite materials are found to be 1–2 µm, as evidenced by the electron microscope, suggesting synthesized materials are of micron size. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of sintered pellets are well confirmed by electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) which illustrate the greater percentage of tungsten presents in the profound scan areas with other elements of the composite. The absence of pores across the 3D geometry suggesting dense sample, which is quite revealed by the X-ray tomography inspection. The prepared sintered pellets from the tungsten based composites are found to be ≈ 99.5% density with the observation of tungsten to be accumulated uniformly across the scan regions along with focussed hot spots as implied by EPMA. This study paves the way, to examine how the tungsten accumulation and the distribution with the other elements for future understanding in bone tissue engineering application and the in vivo specification of tungsten.  相似文献

In the rat small intestine, the glycosylation changes which normally take place at the weaning period are characterized by a shift from sialylation of fucosylation. The introduction of dietary fibers at weaning is one of the more striking nutritional modification so that some authors have suggested that the presence of fibers and the development of colonic fermentation might be important for the development of the small intestine, as for the colon. In order to define the respective contribution of ontogenic and nutritional factors to the intestinal glycosylation changes at this period, some aspects of the intestinal glycosylation were studied in five groups of rats (16-day-old suckling rats, prolonged nursing 23-day-old rats, 23-day-old rats weaned at day 19 with either a fiber-free, a cellulose or a pectin diet). Intestinal glycoproteins of suckling rats are characterized by a low fucose content and a high proportion of mannose. The amounts of the neutral sugars (fucose, mannose and galactose), expressed either per gram of intestine or for one intestine, are alwars higher in the fiber-fed groups than in the prolonged-nursing group or the group fed the fiber-free diet. Activities which promote fucosylation process (GDP-fucose production and fucosyltransferase activities) and those which are opposed to fucosylation (endogenous inhibitor of fucosyltransferase and GDP-fucose pyrophosphatase) are strongly modified in opposite ways at day 23 as compared to day 16. These modifications depend on the age of the animal (ontogenic factors) with additional modifications induced by the dietary factors. In particular, similar sugar contents and patterns are obtained with cellulose and pectin diests though the enzymatic activities of the fucosylation pathway are very different. No correlation was found between the caecal content of short chain fatty acids and any of the parameters under study. Thus, dietary fibers induce metabolic changes in the small intestine glycosylation in short-term experiments independently of colonic fermentation. Besides, these results point out that the consideration of fucosyl-transferase activities alone are not sufficient to predict glycoprotein fucose content and that other regulatory sites are involved. Dietary manipulations at the weaning period could represent a good model for the study of glycosylation regulation.  相似文献

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that has generated scientific interest because of its prevalence in the population. Studies indicate that physical exercise promotes neuroplasticity and improves cognitive function in animal models and in human beings. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of strength exercise on the hippocampal protein contents and memory performance in mice subjected to a model of sporadic AD induced by streptozotocin (STZ). Swiss mice received two injections of STZ (3 mg/kg, intracerebroventricular). After 21 days, they began physical training using a ladde. Mice performed this protocol for 4 weeks. After the last exercise training session, mice performed the Morris Water Maze test. The samples of hippocampus were excised and used to determine protein contents of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), extracellular signal-regulated kinase-Ca2+ (ERK), calmodulin-dependent protein kinase (CAMKII) and cAMP-response element-binding protein (CREB) signalling pathway. Strength exercise was effective against the decrease in the time spent and distance travelled in the target quadrant by STZ-injected mice. Strength exercise was also effective against the reduction of mature BDNF, tropomyosin receptor kinase B and neuronal nuclear antigen (NeuN) hippocampal protein levels in STZ mice. The decrease in the hippocampal ratio of pERK/ERK, pCAMKII/CAMKII and pCREB/CREB induced by STZ was reversed by strength exercise. Strength exercise decreased Bax/Bcl2 ratio in the hippocampus of STZ-injected mice. The present study demonstrates that strength exercise modulated the hippocampal BDNF/ERK-CAMKII/CREB signalling pathway and suppressed STZ-induced spatial memory impairment in mice.  相似文献

Accurate characterisation of the scanner's point spread function across the entire field of view (FOV) is crucial in order to account for spatially dependent factors that degrade the resolution of the reconstructed images. The HRRT users' community resolution modelling reconstruction software includes a shift-invariant resolution kernel, which leads to transaxially non-uniform resolution in the reconstructed images. Unlike previous work to date in this field, this work is the first to model the spatially variant resolution across the entire FOV of the HRRT, which is the highest resolution human brain PET scanner in the world. In this paper we developed a spatially variant image-based resolution modelling reconstruction dedicated to the HRRT, using an experimentally measured shift-variant resolution kernel. Previously, the system response was measured and characterised in detail across the entire FOV of the HRRT, using a printed point source array. The newly developed resolution modelling reconstruction was applied on measured phantom, as well as clinical data and was compared against the HRRT users' community resolution modelling reconstruction, which is currently in use. Results demonstrated improvements both in contrast and resolution recovery, particularly for regions close to the edges of the FOV, with almost uniform resolution recovery across the entire transverse FOV. In addition, because the newly measured resolution kernel is slightly broader with wider tails, compared to the deliberately conservative kernel employed in the HRRT users' community software, the reconstructed images appear to have not only improved contrast recovery (up to 20% for small regions), but also better noise characteristics.  相似文献

High lethality of aortic dissection necessitates accurate predictive metrics for dissection risk assessment. The not infrequent incidence of dissection at aortic diameters <5.5 cm, the current threshold guideline for surgical intervention (Nishimura et al., 2014), indicates an unmet need for improved evidence-based risk stratification metrics. Meeting this need requires a fundamental understanding of the structural mechanisms responsible for dissection evolution within the vessel wall. We present a structural model of the repeating lamellar structure of the aortic media comprised of elastic lamellae and collagen fiber networks, the primary load-bearing components of the vessel wall. This model was used to assess the role of these structural features in determining in-plane tissue strength, which governs dissection initiation from an intimal tear. Ascending aortic tissue specimens from three clinically-relevant patient populations were considered: non-aneurysmal aorta from patients with morphologically normal tricuspid aortic valve (CTRL), aneurysmal aorta from patients with tricuspid aortic valve (TAV), and aneurysmal aorta from patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). Multiphoton imaging derived collagen fiber organization for each patient cohort was explicitly incorporated in our model. Model parameters were calibrated using experimentally-measured uniaxial tensile strength data in the circumferential direction for each cohort, while the model was validated by contrasting simulated tissue strength against experimentally-measured strength in the longitudinal direction. Orientation distribution, controlling the fraction of loaded collagen fibers at a given stretch, was identified as a key feature governing anisotropic tissue strength for all patient cohorts.  相似文献
