In this study, volatile oils of six Hawk tea varieties were studied for their chemical composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities to screen the most suitable botanical origins of Hawk tea. A total of 72 components were separated and identified from the six oils. The major constituents of the volatile oils were: α‐pinene, camphene, limonene, 1,8‐cineole, linalool, cis‐nerolidol, and germacrene B. Moreover, the volatile oils were evaluated for antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activities. The results showed that all volatile oils exhibited acceptable antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, which suggested that these volatile oils may serve as natural alternatives to synthetic antioxidants and preservatives to be applied in food and pharmaceutical industries. Principal component analysis results denoted that some major compounds may be closely related to the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. It also showed that the volatile oils from Litsea coreana var. lanuginosa and Litsea pungens Hemsl . were characterized by positive values of first two principal components, indicating higher active chemical compounds and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities compared with other species. Thus, they were temporarily considered as good sources of Hawk tea.  相似文献

1.  The European hawk moth Macroglossum stellatarum, while collecting nectar in hovering flight in front of flowers, follows moving stripe patterns in the lateral visual field. This response counteracts a second one, that is the animals' effort to stabilize their distance from dummy flowers. We investigated the response to motion stimuli in the lateral visual field using sinusoidally oscillating stripe patterns (Fig. 1), as well as its interaction with the distance stabilizing response.
2.  In both responses moths attempt to compensate for image speed. The balance between the two depends on the number of elementary motion detectors stimulated by the dummy flower and the stripe pattern, respectively. Increasing the diameter of the dummy flower (Figs. 2 to 4) or the spatial frequency of the stripe pattern (Fig. 7) shifts the balance in favour of distance stabilization. The reverse is true when the length of the stripes in the pattern (Fig. 5) or their number is increased (Fig. 6). It does not matter whether the stripe pattern is presented in the lateral (Fig. 4A) or in the dorsal and ventral visual field (Fig. 4B).
3.  The gain-frequency relations of the response to the lateral stripe pattern obtained with dummies in two different positions within the drum have their maxima around 3 Hz and decline rapidly towards lower and higher frequencies like the response of a bandpass filter. The distance stabilizing response also has bandpass properties, but with a broad plateau between 0.15 and 5 Hz (Fig. 8). The most likely explanation for this difference is that there is a regional or direction-dependent variation of motion detector properties.
4.  The responses to ramp-like stimuli are phasic in accordance with the amplitude frequency characteristics, but the responses to progressive (front to back) and regressive motion of the pattern differ (Figs 9, 10).
5.  The response appears to depend on the azimuthal position of the stripe pattern within the visual field (Fig. 11). It is strongest when the pattern covers equally large parts of the frontal and caudal visual fields. The optomotor sensitivity to translational pattern motion is higher in the frontal than in the caudal visual field (Fig. 12, Table 1).
6.  When the stripe pattern on one side is removed, the response amplitude is halved. There is no detectable turning response around the vertical axis to the oscillation of the stripe pattern (Fig. 13, Table 2).
7.  The possible role of the response to pattern movements parallel to the longitudinal body axis under natural conditions is discussed.

Numerous studies have demonstrated earlier timing of spring migration and egg‐laying in small passerines, but documentation of such responses to recent climate change in the life histories of higher trophic feeding birds such as raptors is relatively scarce. Raptors may be particularly susceptible to possible adverse effects of climate change due to their longer generation turnover times and lower reproductive capacity, which could lead to population declines because of an inability to match reproductive timing with optimal brood rearing conditions. Conversely adaptively favorable outcomes due to the influence of changing climate may occur. In general, birds that seasonally nest earlier typically have higher reproductive output compared to conspecifics that nest later in the season. Given the strong seasonal decline in reproductive output, and the heritability of nesting phenology, it is possible that nesting seasons would (adaptively) advance over time. Recent climate warming may release prior ecological constraints on birds that depend on food availability at the time of egg production, as do various raptors including Cooper's Hawks (Accipiter cooperii). Under this scenario, productivity, especially clutch size, might increase because it is likely that this reproductive demographic may be the most immediate response to the earlier seasonal presence of food resources. We demonstrated a statistically significant shift of about 4–5 days to an earlier timing of egg‐hatching in spring across 36 years during 1980–2015 for a partially migratory population of Cooper's Hawks in Wisconsin, United States, which is consistent with a recent study that showed that Cooper's Hawks had advanced their timing of spring migration during 1979–2012. Both studies occurred in the Great Lakes region, an area that compared to global averages is experiencing earlier and increased warming particularly in the spring in Wisconsin. The nesting period did not lengthen. We suggest that the gradual shift of six consecutive generations of hawks was likely in response to recent climate change or warming. We did not detect any long‐term temporal change in average clutch or brood sizes. However, such indices of reproduction are among the highest known for the species and thus may be at their physio‐ecological maximum for this population. Our study population appears to show resilience to and does not appear to be adversely influenced by the recent rate of changing climate at this time.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   We examined the diet of White-throated Hawks ( Buteo albigula ) during the incubation and nestling periods in the southern temperate forest of Argentina. Pellets ( N = 74) and prey remains ( N = 59) were collected at 10 nests from 1998 to 2003, and preys delivered to two nests were monitored during the 2001–2002 breeding seasons. White-throated Hawks fed on small mammals, birds, lizards, and insects. The three methods of identifying prey (pellets, prey remains, and direct observation) produced different results. All types of prey except large birds were detected in pellets, and arthropods may have been over-represented in pellets due to secondary consumption. No remains of either arthropods or reptiles were identified among prey remains collected at nest sites and, during nest observations, we were unable to identify many of the prey items delivered by adults. Our results indicate that accurate determination of the diet of White-throated Hawks requires more than one method of identifying prey.  相似文献

Swainson’s Hawks (Buteo swainsoni) are large raptors with a breeding distribution extending across much of western North America where they were historically considered one of the most abundant raptors. Swainson’s Hawks have declined precipitously in many parts of their range during the 20th century, and the historical range in California has been much reduced. In the Central Valley of California (CV), Swainson’s Hawks exhibit behavioral and morphological characteristics apparently different from other regions. To describe the genetic diversity and population structure of Swainson’s Hawks throughout their range, 19 microsatellite loci and 416 base pairs of the mitochondrial control region were analyzed. Microsatellite diversity appears high throughout the contemporary range. A Bayesian model-based analysis of microsatellite genotypes revealed clusters associated with the CV and the Great Basin/Great Plains region of North America (GBGP) with overlap between regions. F ST estimates suggest limited differentiation among Swainson’s Hawks with isolation by distance. A heterozygote excess indicated a recent reduction in effective population size of Swainson’s Hawks across all regions. Control region data revealed no population structure and provided evidence of historic population expansion in the GBGP. In the CV a weaker signature of population expansion was detected, possibly altered by recent declines. While genetic data suggests recent gene-flow across regions, apparent differences between the CV and GBGP in traits with potential fitness consequences (migratory behavior and morphology) along with marked decline in numbers in California call for careful conservation, management, and monitoring of Swainson’s Hawks in the CV.  相似文献

We present information on the prey taken by the Bat Hawk Macheiramphus alcinus in two different areas of lowland western central Madagascar. These are the first dietary data from Madagascar for this widespread Old World species. The recovered remains were almost exclusively of bats and birds, with a few examples of reptiles and insects. In total, 178 pellets were analysed. On the basis of minimum number of individuals and biomass, bats accounted for 58.3% and 30.3%, respectively, and birds 36.1% and 69.7%, respectively. Amongst the nine species of bats recovered from the pellets, four were represented by multiple individuals, particularly taxa belonging to the families Molossidae and Vespertilionidae that fly in open areas, and for the 11 species of identified birds, all were represented by a single individual. These patterns are interpreted as a specialisation of feeding on bats during a narrow window of time at dusk, as they leave day roost sites, and then using birds in a more general manner to fill in nutritional needs.  相似文献

  1. Raptor species conservation should consider a landscape perspective in order to include habitat requirements associated to large home ranges around nesting sites. Landscape analysis can help to better understand raptor habitat requirements and the degree of tolerance to habitat changes at different scales.
  2. We used a landscape ecology perspective to determine the nesting habitat selection of endemic and endangered Cuban Black Hawk, and using ecological niche modeling, we obtained the potential distribution of nests to evaluate the effectiveness of protected areas (PAs) for raptor conservation.
  3. Nesting habitat selection was related to breeding success at a landscape scale using data from 27 different nesting sites during 2012–2013 breeding seasons. The potential nesting areas distribution was compared with current officially PAs design in the central region of Cuba.
  4. All nests were located in mangrove swamp. Pairs chose nesting sites with low soil–vegetation moisture and low soil reflectance. At the landscape level, they selected low shape complexity of patches and few patches of coastal vegetation around nesting sites which contained similar mangrove patch size and shape. The potential distribution of nests increased close to the coastline. The model predicted a suitable narrow area of 556 km2, and the most favorable nesting area represented 2% of this total. 33% of nests were located within officially natural protected areas while 27% were close to or inside highly threatened areas. A 16% of high to medium suitable nesting habitat overlaps with urban areas. Currently, PAs contain 23% of the nesting area distribution.
  5. Our study shows landscape ecology and nest‐site selection approach is crucial to evaluate the persistence of Cuban Black Hawk, as environmental variables and human activity can be related to its productivity. This approach can be applied in conservation strategies of island raptors.

Traditional subspecies classifications may suggest phylogenetic relationships that are discordant with evolutionary history and mislead evolutionary inference. To more accurately describe evolutionary relationships and inform conservation efforts, we investigated the genetic relationships and demographic histories of Buteo lineatus subspecies in eastern and western North America using 21 nuclear microsatellite loci and 375-base pairs of mitochondrial control region sequence. Frequency based analyses of mitochondrial sequence data support significant population distinction between eastern (B. l. lineatus/alleni/texanus) and western (B. l. elegans) subspecies of B. lineatus. This distinction was further supported by frequency and Bayesian analyses of the microsatellite data. We found evidence of differing demographic histories between regions; among eastern sites, mitochondrial data suggested that rapid population expansion occurred following the end of the last glacial maximum, with B. l. texanus population expansion preceding that of B. l. lineatus/alleni. No evidence of post-glacial population expansion was detected among western samples (B. l. elegans). Rather, microsatellite data suggest that the western population has experienced a recent bottleneck, presumably associated with extensive anthropogenic habitat loss during the 19th and 20th centuries. Our data indicate that eastern and western populations of B. lineatus are genetically distinct lineages, have experienced very different demographic histories, and suggest management as separate conservation units may be warranted.  相似文献

We assessed the nutritional condition and established reference values for serum chemistry parameters in a long distance migrant bird of prey, the Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni), wintering in central Argentina. We analyzed serum concentration of urea, uric acid, cholesterol, and triglycerides and assessed age and sex related differences in these parameters. A body condition index was obtained from the resultant residuals of the regression of body mass and a morphometric measure. No statistical differences were observed among sex and age groups for urea, uric acid and triglyceride serum concentration. However, cholesterol concentration differed among male and female hawks, which could be related to the gain of body mass in wintering grounds at differential rates. The mean values of the four parameters were in the range of those recorded in the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo), indicating good nutritional condition of the population we studied. Forearm length was the morphometric variable that better correlated with body mass. The resultant body condition index was only correlated with triglyceride concentration, suggesting that this index could be valuable in future work dealing with the assessment of body fat storage in wintering and breeding hawks, as well as in stopover points on the migratory route.  相似文献

Optomotor responses of freely flying hawk moths, Macroglossum stellatarum, were characterized while the animals were hovering in front of and feeding on a dummy flower. Compensatory translational and rotational movements of the hawk moth were elicited by vertical grating patterns moving horizontally, mimicking imposed rotational and translational displacements of the animal in the horizontal plane. Oscillatory translational and rotational pattern motion leads to compensatory responses that peak in the frequency range between 2 Hz and 4 Hz. The control systems mediating the translational and rotational components of the optomotor response do not seem to influence each other. The system mediating translational responses is more sensitive in the fronto-lateral part of the visual field than in the lateral part; the opposite is true for the rotational system. The sensitivity of the translational system does not change along the vertical, whereas the rotational system is much more sensitive to motion in the dorsal than in the ventral part of the visual field. These sensitivity gradients may reflect an adaptation to the specific requirements of position stabilization in front of flowers during feeding. Accepted: 13 August 1997  相似文献
