Summary Genetic variation in an isolated northern metapopulation of the pool frog (Rana lessonae) in Sweden was compared to that of Central European populations using enzyme electrophoresis and literature data. Of the 31 loci scored, two (EST-2 andIDH-2) were polymorphic while no variation occurred in seven of the eight loci which are polymorphic in Central European populations.The heterozygosity level of the Swedish pool frogs is very low compared to that of other anuran populations, but their mean proportion of fertilized eggs within egg masses (97.5%) was not lower than in more heterozygous species, and their body size-specific fecundity did not differ from that of Polish conspecifics. The low genetic variability of the Swedish pool frogs is discussed in relation to features of the local populations such as size (N), calculated effective size (N e ) reproductive success and probable history. It is concluded that long-term strong fluctuations in population size caused by reporductive failure in cold years have contributed more to the low genetic variability than could a single founder event due to a recent introduction by man.  相似文献

The development of the tectum mesencephali was studied in the frog Rana temporaria and the salamander Pleurodeles waltl by means of nuclear staining and by labeling of cells with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU). The general spatial and temporal pattern of cell proliferation and cell migration is the same in both species, despite drastic differences in overall tectal morphology. However, the salamander species differs from the frog species by (1) a generally lower cell proliferation rate, (2) a reduction in the activity of the lateral proliferation zone, and (3) a reduction in the formation of superficial cellular layers. Because point (3) affects processes that occur late in ontogeny, our experiments provide evidence that the simple morphology of the tectum of Pleurodeles waltl, compared with the multilayered tectum of Rana, is a consequence of a paedomorphic alteration of the ancestral developmental pattern of the amphibian tectum.  相似文献

Amphibian species persisting in isolated streams and wetlands in desert environments can be susceptible to low connectivity, genetic isolation, and climate changes. We evaluated the past (1900–1930), recent (1981–2010), and future (2071–2100) climate suitability of the arid Great Basin (USA) for the Columbia spotted frog (Rana luteiventris) and assessed whether changes in surface water may affect connectivity for remaining populations. We developed a predictive model of current climate suitability and used it to predict the historic and future distribution of suitable climates. We then modeled changes in surface water availability at each time period. Finally, we quantified connectivity among existing populations on the basis of hydrology and correlated it with interpopulation genetic distance. We found that the area of the Great Basin with suitable climate conditions has declined by approximately 49% over the last century and will likely continue to decline under future climate scenarios. Climate conditions at currently occupied locations have been relatively stable over the last century, which may explain persistence at these sites. However, future climates at these currently occupied locations are predicted to become warmer throughout the year and drier during the frog's activity period (May – September). Fall and winter precipitation may increase, but as rain instead of snow. Earlier runoff and lower summer base flows may reduce connectivity between neighboring populations, which is already limited. Many of these changes could have negative effects on remaining populations over the next 50–80 years, but milder winters, longer growing seasons, and wetter falls might positively affect survival and dispersal. Collectively, however, seasonal shifts in temperature, precipitation, and stream flow patterns could reduce habitat suitability and connectivity for frogs and possibly other aquatic species inhabiting streams in this arid region.  相似文献

The morphology and topographic distribution of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells in the stomach and small intestine of the frog Rana esculenta were studied at the light-microscopic level by the use of the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method. Scattered immunostained cells occurred in all regions of the gastrointestinal tract investigated. In the small intestine, the number of these cells decreased gradually in the oral to anal direction, i.e. from the pyloric (antral) stomach to the entrance into the colon. Most of the immunostained cells possessed thick, short cytoplasmic processes, which did not display a preferential spatial orientation. Other somatostatin-immunoreactive cells, which were exclusively located in the small intestine, gave rise to a single long extension oriented toward the lumen. In both stomach and small intestine, a complete penetration of the epithelial surface by these processes of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells was observed only occasionally. The morphological features of the somatostatin-immunostained cells speak in favor of endocrine, paracrine, and possibly also intraluminal secretory functions of the enteroendocrine somatostatin system in frogs.Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Bonn, Germany  相似文献

The carbohydrate chains of the mucins which constitute the jelly coat surrounding the eggs of Rana temporaria were released by alkaline borohydride treatment. Neutral and acidic oligosaccharide-alditols were purified by ion-exchange chromatography and HPLC. From the structural analysis, based upon 1H and 13C-NMR spectroscopy in combination with MALDI-TOF, the following glycan units are proposed. The introduction of non-native predators is thought to have important negative effects on native prey populations. The susceptibility of native prey to non-native or introduced predators may depend on their ability to respond appropriately to the presence of these non-native predators. We conducted a laboratory based behavioral experiment to examine the response of American toad (Bufo americanus) and bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) tadpoles to the presence of cues from the introduced mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), a potential tadpole predator. Neither the American toad tadpoles nor the bullfrog tadpoles responded behaviorally to the presence of mosquitofish cues. If tadpoles are unable to respond to the presence of mosquitofish cues appropriately, then their ability to avoid predation by mosquitofish may be compromised and this may contribute to the impacts of mosquitofish on some tadpole populations.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Vorkommen und Verteilung biogener Amine im Gehirn von Rana temporaria-Kaulquappen wurden fluoreszenzmikroskopisch untersucht. Catecholaminhaltige Perikaryen erscheinen ab Stadium 20 im Nucleus reticularis mesencephali, im Tuber cinereum und im Bulbus olfactorius, ab Stadium 22 in den Flügelplatten der Medulla oblongata und in der Area praeoptica. Ab Entwicklungsstufe 20 zeigen sich ventrolateral in Medulla oblongata und Mittelhirn, lateral vom Organon vasculosum hypothalami, im Bereich des medialen Vorderhirnbündels und im Striatum catecholaminhaltige Faseranschwellungen, ab Stadium 22 außerdem in der Eminentia mediana und dem Hypophysenzwischenlappen, in der Commissura transversa (bis zur Stufe 26), in der Commissura anterior (bis zur Stufe 26) und in der Pars ventrolateralis nuclei lateralis septi. Im Striatum ist von dieser Entwicklungsstufe an ein zweites Areal mit grün fluoreszierenden Varikositäten nachweisbar. Ab Stadium 26 finden sich auch in der Pars dorsolateralis des lateralen Septumkerns catecholaminhaltige Faseranschwellungen.Ab Entwicklungsstufe 22 sind 5-HT-haltige, gelb fluoreszierende Perikaryen im Nucleus raphes und in seiner Umgebung zu beobachten, gelb fluoreszierende Varikositäten im Nucleus interpeduncularis und zwischen medialem und lateralem Septumkern.
Ontogeny of the amine-containing nerve cell systems in the brain of Rana temporaria
Summary The occurrence and distribution of biogenic amines in the brain of Rana temporaria tadpoles have been investigated with the fluorescence-microscope. From the embryonic developmental stage 20 onwards catecholamine-containing cell bodies are shown to be present in the nucleus reticularis mesencephali, the tuber cinereum and the olfactory bulb, and from stage 22 onwards also within the dorsolateral areas of the medulla oblongata and within the preoptic area. Catecholamine-containing enlargements of nerve fibres occur in the ventrolateral parts of the medulla oblongata and the midbrain, in an area lateral to the hypothalamic organon vasculosum, within the region of the medial forebrain bundle and within the striatum, in all stages following stage 20. These enlargements also occur in the median eminence and the pars intermedia of the hypophysis, in the commissura transversa (up to stage 26), in the commissura anterior (also up to stage 26) and in the pars ventrolateralis nuclei lateralis septi in all stages after 22. From the same stage onwards a second area of green fluorescent varicosities can be demonstrated within the striatum. After stage 26 catecholamine-containing enlargements of nerve fibres additionally are to be found in the dorsolateral part of the lateral septal nucleus.After appearing at stage 22 5-HT-containing, yellow fluorescent perikarya are to be observed within the nucleus raphes and its neighbourhood, and yellow fluorescent varicosities in the interpeduncular nucleus and in an area between the medial and the lateral septal nucleus.

Summary In the pars tuberalis of the hypophysis of Rana temporaria, which shows the ultrastructural characteristics of a polypeptide hormone secreting endocrine gland, seasonal changes of the ultrastructure are described. In accordance with the literature, these seasonal changes of ultrastructure are interpreted as the morphological expression of seasonal changes of endocrine activity of the pars tuberalis.  相似文献

Two novel antimicrobial peptides with similarity to brevinin‐2 family are purified and characterized from the skin secretions of the frog, Rana nigrovittata. Their amino acid sequences were determined as GAFGNFLKGVAKKAGLKILSIAQCKLSGTC (brevinin‐2‐RN1) and GAFGNFLKGVAKKAGLKILSIAQCKLFGTC (brevinin‐2‐RN2), respectively, by Edman degradation. Different from brevinin‐2, which is composed of 33 amino acid residues (aa), both brevinin‐2‐RN1 and ‐RN2 contain 30 aa. Five cDNA sequences (Genbank accession numbers, EU136465‐9) encoding precursors of brevinin‐2‐RN1 and ‐RN2 were screened from the skin cDNA library of R. nigrovittata. These precursors are composed of 72 aa including a predicted signal peptide, an acidic spacer peptide, and a mature brevinin‐2‐RN. Both brevinin‐2‐RN1 and ‐RN2 showed strong antimicrobial activities against gram‐positive and gram‐negative bacteria and fungi.
