We determined the incidence of curculionid beetles of the genus Lonchophorus on aborted and not aborted flower buds and developing fruits of the tree Ceiba pentandra in southeastern Costa Rica. Beetle larvae were found in reproductive parts of all trees sampled trees. The frequency of beetle larvae was greater in aborted buds and immature fruits. A positive correlation between larvae development and flower bud development indicates that female oviposition occurred in an early flower developmental stage and time until bud abortion is variable. Weevil herbivory could be considered as one of the main factors that cause flower bud and fruit abortion in C. pentandra.
Resumen Determinamos la incidencia de curculiónidos del género Lonchophorus en botones florales y frutos inmaduros tanto abortados como no abortados en el árbol Ceiba pentandra en el SE de Costa Rica. Las larvas de curculiónidos fueron encontradas en todos los árboles muestreados. La frecuencia de larvas fue mayor en botones y frutos abortados. Una correlación positiva entre el desarrollo larval y el desarrollo del botón indica que la oviposición ocurre en una fase temprana de este y que el tiempo hasta el aborto es variable. La herbivoría por larvas de curculiónidos puede ser uno de los factores más importantes en el aborto de botones y frutos inmaduros en C. pentandra.

The effects of applied gibberellins (GAs), GA1, GA3, GA4 and GA7 with a cytokinin, N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N′-phenylurea (CPPU) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) on fruit set, parthenogenesis induction and fruit expansion of a number of Rosaceae species were assessed. These included Japanese pear cv. ‘Akibae’ (self-compatible) and cv. ‘Iwate yamanashi’ (a seedless cultivar). Other Rosaceae species (Pyrus communis, Chaenomeles sinensis, Cydonia oblonga, and Malus pumila) were also investigated. GA4, GA7 and CPPU are very effective in inducing parthenocarpic fruit growth, whereas GA1, GA3 and IAA, have no ability to induce parthenogenesis in Japanese pear. GA4- and GA7-induced parthenocarpic fruit tended to be smaller in size, higher in flesh hardness, and showed advanced fruit ripening in comparison to pollinated fruit and to parthenocarpic fruit induced by CPPU. GA4- and GA7-induced parthenocarpic fruit also had an increased pedicel length and fruit shape index and also showed a slight protrusion of the calyx end. CPPU, GA4 and GA7 alone or combination with uniconazole were also active in inducing parthenogenesis in three other Rosaceae species, although final fruit set was extremely low. GA1 was essentially inactive in promoting fruit expansion unlike the other bioactive GAs, whose effectiveness in promoting fruit cell expansion was as follow: GA4 ≈ GA7 > GA3 > GA1.  相似文献

Human-wildlife conflicts pose a growing threat to many species worldwide and require increasingly innovative and multi-disciplinary resolutions. Because of their apparent simplicity and political appeal, lethal approaches like culling are often favoured, decisions to cull are typically poorly supported by scientific evidence and the limitations and drawbacks of culls minimised. As natural habitats decline and fruit crop production expands, fruit-eating bats in the Old World (family Pteropodidae) are increasingly in conflict with fruit farmers. This conflict is exemplified on Mauritius where the government has implemented two mass culls of a threatened flying fox (Pteropus niger) since 2015 in response to fruit-grower concerns. The culls and illegal hunting reduced the bat population by >50%. In this context, we sought to investigate the ecological role and service provided by the targeted flying fox through seed dissemination to gauge what may be lost as the species becomes rarer or extinct. We randomly sampled the woody native community in six of the best-preserved moist-to-wet native forests of Mauritius using 90 plots of 100 m2 each and identified and measured the stem size of all woody plants ≥1 cm in diameter. Species were classified by whether their fruits occur in the diet of the flying fox in an exclusive, confirmed or likely manner and we assumed that fruit consumption is equivalent to potential seed dissemination. The relative importance of these three categories to the total woody plant community was then quantified as the proportion of species richness, stem density and basal area (as a surrogate of biomass) that they represent. We also investigated whether the main traits of species (seed size, fruit size, and maximum stem diameter) vary among bat-dispersal categories and differ from those of species whose fruits are not currently known to be eaten by the flying fox. On average, although about a quarter of the native woody species (24.6%) have fruits confirmed as eaten and seeds dispersed by the flying fox, these species comprise about half (53.1%) of the stems sampled and the majority (63.1%) of the basal area of native woody plant in the island’s native forests. About half of that latter biomass figure comprises species for which the flying fox is the exclusive native vertebrate frugivore and seed disperser. Plants disseminated by the flying fox are typically large trees with large fruit and seeds. These trees are often key components of the canopy, therefore fulfilling structural engineer roles that provide resources and conditions for the survival of many forest species. The flying fox plays a disproportionally large ecological role in maintaining forest structure and biodiversity in the long-term. Consequently, lethal approaches to the conflict with fruit-farmers threaten not only an endangered species, but ecological processes central to the viability of native forests. Our findings highlight the importance of including the ecological costs of culling in decision-making processes intended to resolve human-wildlife conflicts.  相似文献

Anthocyanin accumulation is one measure of ripening in the strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch.), a non-climacteric fruit. Neither aminoethoxyvinylglycine, an inhibitor of 1-aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid synthase, nor inhibitors of ethylene action (silver, norbornadiene) affected anthocyanin accumulation in ripening fruit. When the achenes were removed from one half of an unripe fruit there was an accelerated accumulation of anthocyanin and induction of phenylalanine ammonia lyase on the de-achened portion of the ripening fruit. These effects of achene removal could be prevented by the application of the synthetic auxins 1-naphthaleneacetic acid or 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid to the de-achened surface. The introduction of 1-naphthalene acetic acid into intact unripe strawberry fruit through the peduncle delayed their subsequent ripening, as measured by the accumulation of anthocyanin, loss of chlorophyll and decrease in firmness. In this study we present evidences of the importance of the phenological pattern on the distribution limits of the dioecious Pistacia lentiscus L. This species, though displaying a thermophilous distribution, has been proved to resist low freezing temperatures during winter. We try to explain this apparent paradox by studying the effects of an extreme cold event that occurred in December 2001 on a natural population of P. lentiscus in the NE of the Iberian Peninsula. In previous phenological studies conduced over 4 years, no spring branch damage was noticeable among population individuals. Female individuals of this species present a prolonged phenophase development which extends until early winter with the conclusion of fruit set. Therefore, we hypothesize that female plants would be more affected than male ones in terms of the following: (1) vegetative and reproductive organs survival; and (2) next-year vegetative growth and fruit production. To test this hypothesis, we selected 225 adult individuals (113 females and 112 males) in April 2002, and estimated their crown volume, percentage of frozen branches and reproductive buds, and the amount of 2001 fruits frozen. In June 2002 we evaluated, in the same individuals, the percentage of vegetative buds flushed into shoots and of reproductive buds producing infrutescences. Branch mortality was significantly higher in female plants and females with increased frost-damage displayed a higher amount of frozen fruits. The loss of reproductive buds caused a decrease in 2002 fruit production, while 2002 vegetative growth was unaffected by the degree of frost damage. These results verify most of the predictions of our hypothesis. Moreover, they suggest that the limited distribution of P. lentiscus in the cold areas of Mediterranean climate could be more determined by the long extent of the phenological activity of the crown than by its frost tolerance during winter.  相似文献

The influence of air vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and plant fruit load on the expansion and water relations of young tomato fruits grown in a glasshouse were evaluated under summer Mediterranean conditions. The contributions of phloem, xylem and transpiration fluxes to the fruit volume increase were estimated at an hourly scale from the growth curves of intact, heat-girdled and detached fruits, measured using displacement transducers. High VPD conditions reduced the xylem influx and increased the fruit transpiration, but hardly affected the phloem influx. Net water accumulation and growth rate were reduced, and a xylem efflux even occurred during the warmest and driest hours of the day. Changes in xylem flux could be explained by variations in the gradient of water potential between stem and fruit, due to changes in stem water potential. Misting reduced air VPD and alleviated the reduction in fruit volume increase through an increase in xylem influx and a decrease in fruit transpiration. Under low fruit load, the competition for assimilates being likely reduced, the phloem flux to fruits increased, similarly to the xylem and transpiration fluxes, without any changes in the fruit water potential. However, different diurnal dynamics among treatments assume variable contributions of turgor and osmotic pressure in F3 and F6 fruits, and hypothetical short-term variations in the water potential gradient between stem and fruit, preventing xylem efflux in F3 fruits.  相似文献

This study explores the unique growth-regulatory roles of two naturally occurring auxins, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 4-chloroindole-3-acetic acid (4-Cl-IAA), and their interactions with gibberellin (GA) during early pea (Pisum sativum L.) fruit development. We have previously shown that 4-Cl-IAA can replace the seed requirement in pea pericarp growth (length and fresh weight), whereas IAA had no effect or was inhibitory. When applied simultaneously, gibberellin (GA3 or GA1) and 4-Cl-IAA had a synergistic effect on pericarp growth. In the present study, we found that simultaneous application of IAA and GA3 to deseeded pericarps inhibited GA3-stimulated growth. The inhibitory effect of IAA on GA-stimulated growth was mimicked by treatment with ethephon (ethylene releasing agent), and the inhibitory effects of IAA and ethylene on GA-mediated growth were reversed by silver thiosulfate (STS), an ethylene action inhibitor. Although pretreatment with STS could retard senescence of IAA-treated pericarps, STS pretreatment did not lead to IAA-induced pericarp growth. Although 4-Cl-IAA stimulated growth whereas IAA was ineffective, both auxins induced similar levels of ethylene evolution. However, only 4-Cl-IAA-stimulated growth was insensitive to the effects of ethylene. Gibberellin treatment did not influence the amount of ethylene released from pericarps in the presence or absence of either auxin. We propose a growth regulatory role for 4-Cl-IAA through induction of GA biosynthesis and inhibition of ethylene action. Additionally, ethylene (IAA-induced or IAA-independent) may inhibit GA responses under physiological conditions that limit fruit growth.  相似文献

 研究了缙云山川鄂连蕊茶(Camellia rosthorniana)在3个群落类型中的生殖分配、生殖分配与个体大小之间的关系和座果率。结果表明:1)在地径1.0~3.5 cm范围内,种群间生殖分配差异显著,即毛竹林>针阔混交林>常绿阔叶林;在地径1.0~5.0 cm范围内,针阔混交林和常绿阔叶林之间差异不显著;在地径1.0~6.0 cm范围内,毛竹林显著高于针阔混交林和常绿阔叶林,而针阔混交林和常绿阔叶林之间差异不显著;因此种群间生殖分配比较时,应考虑种群间的大小分布。运用生殖分配的有关学说对川鄂连蕊茶生殖分配格局进行了解释,生境稳定性学说和生活史理论假说相结合可以解释川鄂连蕊茶生殖分配格局。2)川鄂连蕊茶个体生殖分配与个体大小之间存在抛物线关系。3)种群密度对川鄂连蕊茶座果率没有影响。  相似文献
