Several articulated, but incomplete, acanthodians from the Bunga Beds (late Givetian/early Frasnian) of the southern coast of New South Wales are tentatively identified as ischnacanthids. Heads are missing from all three prepared specimens. They exhibit the following characters: two dorsal fin spines; long, slender scapulocoracoids; slender, relatively deeply inserted, unpaired fin spines; minute scales with a fairly smooth, flat, crown; and an increase in size of normal body scales towards the tip of the tail. The fish are preserved in black, finely laminated shales, which were probably deposited as deep water, lacustrine sediments. The rarity, burial conditions, and headless state of the Bunga Beds acanthodians indicate that they might have died in shallow water, sunk to the bottom, refloated by gas‐induced buoyancy, with the heads lost while drifting out to deeper waters, where the bodies finally sank to a scavenger‐free, anaerobic substrate.  相似文献

The type species of the genera Echinospirifer Ljaschenko, 1973 Komispirifer Ljaschenko, 1973 and Mennespirifer Ljaschenko, 1973 were revised based on material from the memorial collection of A.I. Ljaschenko. Mennespirifer is recognized as a junior synonym of the genus Komispirifer; the genera Echinospirifer and Komispirifer differ in fine ornament and the structure of the shell wall.  相似文献

New bryozoans from the Middle-Upper Devonian (Eifelian-Frasnian) and the Lower Carboniferous (Tournaisian) of the Holy Cross Mountains in central Poland are described: Bigeyella sparsa gen. et sp. nov., B. separata gen. et sp. nov., Eridopora singula sp. nov., Leptotrypa pulchra sp. nov., Kysylschinipora klarae sp. nov., Coelotubulipora rara sp. nov., Alternifenestella genuina sp. nov., Exfenestella polonica sp. nov., and Rectifenestella localis sp. nov. Some paleogeographic and stratigraphic aspects of the Paleozoic deposits of this region are discussed and main bryozoan localities are described.  相似文献

Abstract:  Shark teeth and scales from the Gneudna Formation type section, Carnarvon Basin are rare, but they represent a diverse fauna as well as being the first Frasnian chondrichthyan remains found in Western Australia. In contrast numerous shark teeth and scales have been obtained from coeval sections in the Canning Basin. Teeth referred to as Phoebodus bifurcatus, Phoebodus fastigatus, Phoebodus cf. fastigatus, Phoebodus latus , Phoebodus sp. C and Protacrodus sp. 1 are described from two Canning Basin localities: Horse Spring Range and McIntyre Knolls. The phoebodont species described here have a global distribution and can, therefore, be placed within the standard Frasnian phoebodont zonation. The shark remains from the Gneudna Formation type section include one new genus Emerikodus ektrapelus gen. et sp. nov., described along with Helodontidae indet and Elasmobranchii gen. et sp. indet. It is proposed that the faunal differences observed between the localities are a result of environmental differences. In addition to shark remains, scales from the thelodont Australolepis seddoni were also recovered from each locality. The well-dated Zone 6–10 conodont faunas at Horse Spring constrain the range of A. seddoni with which they occur, and importantly indicate that the Gneudna Formation type section is wholly Frasnian.  相似文献

New Lower-Middle Frasnian conodonts of the genus Palmatolepis Ulrich et Bassler, 1926 are described from the Kalagach and Kulyali formations of the Sishkat key section of Central Tajikistan. Palmatolepis manzuri sp. nov. descends from Pa. punctata (Hinde) and is an ancestor of Pa. kireevae Ovnatanova, Pa. salibaevi sp. nov., and also of the Pa. rhenana Bischoff branch.  相似文献

This study evaluates the severity of the poorly known and mostly underestimated foraminiferal extinction during the Frasnian–Famennian biotic crisis and its evolutionary aftermath. During this global event, worldwide, truly plurilocular planispiral (Nanicellidae) and uniseriate, palmate (Semitextulariidae) foraminifera associated with metazoan reefs died out entirely. Highly advanced test morphology such as that of nanicellids did not reappear in the earth's history until the Late Triassic. Moreover, morphotype comparable to that of the Devonian bilaterally flattened and palmate semitextularids appeared again until the Middle Jurassic (Frondicularia, Lagenida). In terms of the degree of test septation and chamber arrangement as well as general test shape, these foraminifera were ‘very far ahead of their time’. In consequence, foraminifera suffered a significant collapse during the F‐F biodiversity crisis, leading to an amazingly long evolutionary time lag in the case of plurilocular foraminifera lasting at least 150 million years.  相似文献

A new genus and species of pachyosteomorph arthrodire, Omalosteus krutoensis gen. et sp. nov. from shallow-water marine deposits of the Evlanovo Regional Stage (Upper Frasnian, Upper Devonian) of the Central Devonian Field is described. It is tentatively referred to the family Trematosteidae Gross, 1932, which was earlier believed to be endemic to central Europe. The new genus is characterized by a rounded, dorsoventrally compressed cross section of the pectoral region and smooth head shield and postcranial membrane bones. The centrale is elongated, forming a narrow lateral lobe. The praeorbitale, postorbitale, and centrale come in contact in the center of the orbital region. The mediodorsale is wide, its carinal process projects considerably posteriorly. The anterior margin of the anterior ventrolaterale lacks articular facets for the interlaterale.  相似文献

Is the ability to respond to minor perturbations a key to survival to major crisis? This idea was supported by previous studies on Late Devonian conodonts. Genera surviving the Frasnian/Famennian (F/F) crisis, at the end of the Upper Kellwasser anoxic event, had shown a response to a similar but minor event, the Lower Kellwasser (LKW). In contrast, the genus Ancyrodella went extinct at the F/F crisis. This study aims to assess whether this extinction was associated with the absence of response to the minor LKW event. For this purpose, the shape of the P1 platform elements of the conodont Ancyrodella curvata was quantified based on their 2‐D outlines. Conodonts were extracted from two outcrops documenting the Late Devonian Kellwasser events, Coumiac (France) and Mrirt (Morocco). Ancyrodella curvata is characterized by a marked allometric growth that may blur any other source of shape difference, like response to the LKW. Hence, a multivariate method was developed to disentangle size‐free from size‐related shape variations. No coherent temporal size variations emerged from the analysis, but allometry occurring along the growth of the element indeed appeared as the prevailing source of shape variation. By isolating size‐free variations, however, we were able to evidence a morphometric response of A. curvata to the LKW independent from the allometric pattern. Hence, the extinction of A. curvata at the F/F crisis cannot be attributed to an absence of response to minor events. The amount of shape change involved in the LKW shift is, however, of minor importance in comparison with the shape variation due to allometric growth. Alternate hypotheses have been further investigated. Ancyrodella curvata appears as a rare species in the assemblages, and its distribution worldwide suggests a rather specialist taxon. Considering survivorship curves (i.e. frequency distribution of the conodont as a function of its size) A. curvata was characterized by low and constant mortality rate. This may be a clue for a long growth and progressive investment in the reproduction. These arguments support the view that A. curvata was a rather specialist, rare and ‘K‐selected’ taxon. All these factors may not be exclusive and their unfavourable conjunction might have been the key to the extinction of A. curvata.  相似文献

Two placoderms of different orders from a concretion of the Zyabrevo locality (Evlanovo Regional Stage, Frasnian) in central Russia are described. Five plates of the ventral and lateral sides of the trunk armor are assigned to a plourdosteid arthrodire. Three bones located in the region of its stomach are determined as a juvenile ptyctodontid, Ctenurella sp. Records providing actual evidence of predation in Devonian vertebrates are extremely scarce. Finds of this kind are listed for the first time.  相似文献
