Many modern cities have strongly invested in the sustainability of their urban water management system. Nordic cities like Stockholm or Copenhagen are amongst pioneers in investments towards integrated urban water management. However, cities can never be fully self-sufficient due to their dependency on external (water) resources. In this paper, we quantify this water dependency with respect to food consumption in nine cities located in the five Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Iceland), by means of the water footprint concept. Detailed urban water footprint assessments are scarce in the literature. By analysing national nutrition surveys, we find that urban food intake behaviour differs from national food intake behaviour. In large Nordic cities people eat generally less potatoes, milk products (without cheese), meat and animal fats and they drink less coffee than outside city borders. On the other hand, they generally eat more vegetables and vegetable oils and they drink more tea and alcoholic beverages. This leads consistently – for the six large Nordic cities Stockholm, Malmö, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo and Reykjavik – to slightly smaller food related urban water footprints (−2 to −6%) than national average values. We also analyse the water footprint for different diets based upon Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR) for these cities. We assessed three healthy diet scenarios: 1) including meat (HEALTHY-MEAT), 2) pesco-vegetarian (HEALTHY-PESCO-VEG) and 3) vegetarian (HEALTHY-VEG). This shows that Nordic urban dwellers 1) eat too many animal products (red meat, milk and milk products) and sugar and drink too much alcohol and 2) they eat not enough vegetables, fruit and products from the group pulses, nuts and oilcrops. Their overall energy and protein intake is too high. A shift to a healthy diet with recommended energy and protein intake reduces the urban WF related to food consumption substantially. A shift to HEALTHY-MEAT results in a reduction of −9 to −24%, for HEALTHY-PESCO-VEG the reduction is −29 to −37%, for HEALTHY-VEG the reduction is −36 to −44%. It has been shown that cholesterol modulates activity of protein kinase C (PKC), and PKC phosphorylates connexin 43 (Cx43) to regulate its function, respectively. However, it is not known whether cholesterol modulates function of Cx43 through regulating activity of PKC. In the present study, we demonstrated that cholesterol enrichment reduced the dye transfer ability of Cx43 in cultured H9c2 cells. Western blot analysis indicated that cholesterol enrichment enhanced the phosphorylated state of Cx43. Immunofluorescent images showed that cholesterol enrichment made the Cx43 distribution from condensed to diffused manner in the interface between the cells. In cholesterol enriched cells, PKC antagonists partially restored the dye transfer ability among the cells, downregulated the phosphorylation of Cx43 and redistributed Cx43 from the diffused manner to the condensed manner in the cell interface. In addition, reduction of cholesterol level suppressed PKC activity to phosphorylate Cx43 and restored Cx43 function in PKC agonist-treated cells. Furthermore, we demonstrated that cholesterol enrichment upregulated the phosphorylated state of Cx43 at Ser368, while PKC antagonists reversed the effect. Taken together, cholesterol level in the cells plays important roles in regulating Cx43 function through activation of the PKC signaling pathway. 相似文献

We describe a solid vegetable oil–water gel structure which is stabilized through the use of low concentrations of monoglycerides,
containing no added trans fats or saturated fats. The resulting structure consists of oil droplets encapsulated in self-assembled crystalline monoglyceride
multilayers, surrounded by a continuous water phase. Acute ingestion human feeding trials indicated that the serum triglyceride
loading was significantly lower after ingestion of the structured gel rather than a simple oil–water mixture, resulting in
an attenuated increase in serum insulin. This indicates the effectiveness of encapsulation in modulating blood lipid and insulin
response in humans, and suggests a strategy that can be employed for the controlled release of food macronutrients.

Much of the Baltic Sea is currently classified as ‘affected by eutrophication’. The causes for this are twofold. First, current levels of nutrient inputs (nitrogen and phosphorus) from human activities exceed the natural processing capacity with an accumulation of nutrients in the Baltic Sea over the last 50–100 years. Secondly, the Baltic Sea is naturally susceptible to nutrient enrichment due to a combination of long retention times and stratification restricting ventilation of deep waters. Here, based on a unique data set collated from research activities and long‐term monitoring programs, we report on the temporal and spatial trends of eutrophication status for the open Baltic Sea over a 112‐year period using the HELCOM Eutrophication Assessment Tool (HEAT 3.0). Further, we analyse variation in the confidence of the eutrophication status assessment based on a systematic quantitative approach using coefficients of variation in the observations. The classifications in our assessment indicate that the first signs of eutrophication emerged in the mid‐1950s and the central parts of the Baltic Sea changed from being unaffected by eutrophication to being affected. We document improvements in eutrophication status that are direct consequences of long‐term efforts to reduce the inputs of nutrients. The reductions in both nitrogen and phosphorus loads have led to large‐scale alleviation of eutrophication and to a healthier Baltic Sea. Reduced confidence in our assessment is seen more recently due to reductions in the scope of monitoring programs. Our study sets a baseline for implementation of the ecosystem‐based management strategies and policies currently in place including the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directives and the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan. 相似文献

Seasonal nutrient enrichment experiments (short-term bioassays) were conducted in three Florida lakes of different trophic
states to determine the effects of addition of various nutrient combinations upon chlorophyll a and phytoplankton standing crops. Nutrient enriched surface water samples with crustacean zooplankton removed were incubated
in situ in clear polyethylene bags for 3 to 6 days. The 25 factorial design employed two levels (ambient and enriched) of each of five nutrients [NH4
+, PO
inf4
sup3−
, Fe− -EDTA, SiO
inf3
sup2−
and a cation (Ca2+ or K+) or trace elements]. Ammonium produced significant increases in chlorophyll a and phytoplankton standing crops in all experiments. Phosphate produced similar results in the mesotrophic lake, but the
eutrophic lakes had both positive and nonsignificant responses which varied seasonally between lakes. Iron increased chlorophyll
a in most experiments but affected total phytoplankton standing crop only during the summer and fall. Silicon had negative
effects in some experiments. Cations and trace elements produced marked differences between lakes for chlorophyll a, but total phytoplankton standing crop showed few significant responses. Synergistic responses to two- and three-factor interactions
were observed in all lakes. Differences in the responses of phytoplankton taxonomic divisions to enrichment may be responsible
for much of the between lake variation in chlorophyll a and total phytoplankton volume responses. Nutrient limitations in these lakes are discussed and related to limnological factors

Microalgae are one of the important components in food chains of aquatic ecosystems and have been used for human consumption as food and as medicines. The wide diversity of compounds synthesized from different metabolic pathways of fresh and marine water algae provide promising sources of fatty acids, steroids, carotenoids, polysaccharides, lectins, mycosporine-like amino acids, halogenated compounds, polyketides, toxins, agar agar, alginic acid and carrageenan. Extracellular Matrix in Early Stages of Direct Somatic Embryogenesis in Leaves of Drosera spathulata
The growth and water relations of Paulownia fortunei in photoautotrophic cultures (nutrient medium lacking sucrose and growth regulator) with CO2 enrichment (PWAH) or without CO2 enrichment (PWAL) were compared with those in photomixotrophic shoot (PWC; 30 g dm−3 sucrose and 0.3 mg dm−3 N6-benzyladenine) and root cultures (PWR; 0.3 mg dm−3 indole-3-butyric acid). The photoautotrophic and photomixotrophic cultures were incubated under photosynthetic photon flux
125 and 60 μmol m−2 s−1, respectively. 100 % sprouting and significantly higher number of shoots (1.6) were obtained with PWAH as compared to PWAL
and PWC. PWAH and PWAL stimulated spontaneous rooting from the cut end of axillary shoots. In PWAH, 84 % of shoots rooted
with an average of 5.9 roots per shoot and 4.0 cm of root length in 21 d. Rooting of photomixotrophic shoot cultures were
stimulated by an auxin treatment. In this case, 98.3 % of shoots were rooted with an average of 4.6 roots per shoot and 1.9
cm length. A microscopic observation on leaf abaxial surface prints from photomixotrophic shoot and root cultures showed widely
open (6 – 8 μm) spherical stomata (12 – 14 μm) and from photoautotrophic cultures elliptical stomata (10 – 12 μm) with narrow
openings (3 – 4 μm). Leaves from photomixo-trophic cultures had higher stomatal index as compared to photoautotrophic cultures.
The rate of moisture loss from detached leaves was not varying significantly in different cultures.
