Population fluctuations ofGlaux maritima, along a transect on a Baltle sea shore meadow, were recorded between 1979 and 1983. A bimodal distribution in numbers along the transect reflects the variation in factors regulating numbers: The two maintenance systems of the species, vegetative propagation and sexual reproduction play different roles. Vegetative propagation is fast and responds quickly to variations in the environment. The seeds germinate in strongly fluctuating temperatures which are triggered by disturbances such as flooding, damaging the vegetation.  相似文献

Freshwater marshes are the only significant natural ecosystems remaining in the Buenos Aires province section of the Lower Delta of the Parana River (Argentina), occupying 80% of the total island area. The Lower Delta hydrology is dominated mainly by the Parana river and the De La Plata estuary; different temporal superpositions of floods and landscape configurations of the islands result in four distinct flooding patterns. We studied the response of freshwater marsh vegetation to the flooding patterns using principal component analysis and cluster analysis. The study area was gridded and 13 cells were selected representing the different flooding patterns. We found significant environmental heterogeneity in the region and a consequent response in the vegetation, expressed through successive species replacements, and variation in species richness and the number and type of dominant species. The environmental heterogeneity of the region is caused by hydrological variations, geomorphological changes in the islands from upstream to downstream areas of the delta, and patterns of human activity.  相似文献

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), a native of eastern and central North America, is a leading candidate as a dedicated biofuel feedstock in the US due to its broad adaptability, rapid growth rate, and ability to grow in low production soils. To begin to characterize the important agronomic and ecological traits related to environmental tolerance of switchgrass, we evaluated fitness under stressful growing conditions. We assessed the germination, establishment, performance, and reproductive potential of four common accessions, both upland and lowland ecotypes, at various levels of soil moisture availability (moisture deficit to flooded) in the greenhouse. Seeds emerged and established (55–90% survival) under all soil moisture conditions (−0.3 MPa to flooded). Transplants of lowland ecotypes performed as well in flooded conditions as in field capacity controls, though flooding reduced performance of upland ecotypes. Drought treatments (−4.0 and −11.0 MPa) reduced tiller length and number, leaf area, and biomass production by up to 80%. However, once established, all plants survived at −4.0 MPa and had the same proportion of tillers in flower as at field capacity. The ability of switchgrass to germinate, establish, and flower in low moisture and flooded conditions, particularly lowland ecotypes, may increase the range of environments suitable for biofuel cultivation, and can serve as a baseline for further ecological studies and genetic improvement.  相似文献

Tabebuia cassinoides (Lam.) DC (Bignoniaceae) is a tree species that occurs in swampy areas of the coastal “restinga” in SE Brazil (a coastal sandy plains scrub and forest formation). To elucidate possible adaptive strategies that enable this species to occupy areas subjected to seasonal or perennial waterlogging, metabolic, morphological and growth responses of plants under flooding conditions were studied. The root system of T. cassinoides plants presented elevated amounts of ethanol (10.6 μmol g−1 fresh wt) only in the first 5 d of soil water saturation. The two-fold increase in ethanol production under flooding was corroborated by an increase in ADH activity in the same period. Lactic acid concentrations did not change significantly during four months of flooding treatment. The decrease of alcoholic fermentation under hypoxia was associated with the appearing of new roots. The induction of aerenchyma formation in roots developed under flooding conditions, allowed oxygen transport from the shoot to these organs, thus maintaining an aerobic respiration. We conclude that this characteristic and the capacity to oxidize the rhizosphere are probably responsible for the survival and growth of plants while flooded and for their success in an environment, which restricts the presence of the majority of competing tree species.  相似文献

We investigated the roles of flooding, salinity, and plant competition in creating a bimodal zonation pattern of the marsh dominant annual plant, Suaeda salsa, along coastal topographic gradients on the Pacific coast of northern China. In two consecutive years, we manipulated salinity and flooding, salinity, and competition for S. salsa seedlings that had been transplanted into the mudflat, the high marsh, and the upland, respectively. S. salsa plants that had been transplanted into the mudflat were completely eliminated in the non-elevated treatments whereas they performed much better in the 10 cm elevated treatments, regardless of salinity treatments. Although the performance of S. salsa transplanted into the high marsh did not differ between the fresh (watered) and the salt (control) treatments, S. salsa seedling emergence in the high marsh was nearly completely inhibited in the salt treatments. In contrast, a large number of S. salsa seedlings did emerge in the fresh treatments. S. salsa transplanted into the upland performed well when neighbors were removed, whereas it appeared to be strongly suppressed when neighbors were present. These data indicated that flooding, salinity, and competition all played a role in determining the zonation pattern of S. salsa. Furthermore, the importance of salinity was found to vary with life-history stage. Based on the results from these field manipulative experiments, we suggest that the marsh plant zonation paradigm may hold true for plant distributions along landscape-scale topographic gradients from mudflats to uplands in general. The Peace-Athabasca Delta (PAD) is one of the world’s largest freshwater deltas. Many of its shallow (<1.5 m) lakes and wetlands are perched above surrounding waterways. The delta has experienced a number of wetting and drying intervals. The latest drying trend ended in 1996 when high waters, generated under ice-jam and open-water conditions, recharged a number of the perched basins. The objective of this study was to determine the relative importance of hydroclimatic components on the persistence of water. A water-balance model was developed to simulate water-level responses following a flood event. Basin response was tested against a range of historical hydroclimatic conditions that have occurred in the delta during the 20th century. Ponded water duration in a 0.8 m deep perched basin was 5 years for the cool-dry period of the 1920s, slightly longer for the post-1974 flood era, and up to 9 years for the wet conditions of the 1940s and 1950s. Water drawdown occurred in almost every year and was almost exclusively due to evaporation exceeding precipitation. Net groundwater flux was minimal. Given the overlying importance of the floodwater component in the water balance of perched basins, the next step is to investigate the causes, spatial sources and frequency of flooding. This water balance model presented in this paper offers a useful tool for the management of the duration of water in perched wetlands of the PAD, which can help preserve essential habitat for wildlife.  相似文献

A mediterranean-type climate exists in five widely separated regions; the Mediterranean basin, parts of western North America, parts of western and southern Australia, southwestern South Africa and parts of central Chile. Streams in these regions feature seasonal disturbances of contrasting hydrology with high predictability of the timing of flooding and drying but low constancy. We would expect fish living in these streams to avoid scouring flow and breed after cessation of the flood period. The aim of the present study was to examine the adaptation of the Yarqon bleak, Acanthobrama telavivensis, an endemic cyprinid in the coastal streams of Israel, to mediterranean-type stream (mediterranean—written with a small m, is used in connection with climate or ecological region and is distinguished from Mediterranean that is used in a geographical context, referring to the Mediterranean basin.) conditions. For that we studied its reproductive strategy (age at maturity and life span, gonad activity, oocyte maturation, spawning activity and habitats, appearance of juveniles), in a major costal stream (Yarqon). Our findings show that the Yarqon bleak exhibits life history traits attuned with a mediterranean-climate hydrologic regime. It breeds in late winter and early spring, a window of opportunity between flash floods and habitat desiccation. Being a multiple spawner allows the fish to compensate for the potential loss of part of its reproductive output due to scouring flows of late floods. The ability of the Yarqon bleak to spawn on different substrate-types enables it to take advantage of different stream conditions that pertain in different years. The fish attains pre-adult size (ca. 33–42 mm) within the first year, prior to drying out of most stream reaches, and matures by the beginning of the second year (males >41; females >42 mm). The cost of these tactics is a short life span (4–5 age groups). The reproductive strategy of the Yarqon bleak falls into the category of in-channel breeding but, unlike the case suggested by a low flow recruitment model, the fish breed during the period of flood cessation, a transitional time between high and low flows, rather than at the time of low flow. Breeding at this time of the year in mediterranean-type streams puts early stages somewhat at risk of being washed away by late floods, but gains them a longer period of growth under favorable conditions. We suggest an additional positive tradeoff that should be investigated: the reduced competition with age 0 of other fish that breed later in the season. This suggested model of recruitment during the period of flood cessation seems appropriate for fish in streams with seasonal contrasting flows of high predictability but low constancy.  相似文献

Geonoma brevispatha is a clonal palm species commonly found as tussocks in swamp and riparian forests in SE Brazil, occurring in the very transition between flooded pits/channels and dry mounds. Aiming to verify whether the germination responses could explain the spatial pattern of the palm tussocks in swamp forests, we investigated the germination in relation to the main environmental factors to which the seeds are subjected in their natural habitat. The seeds are recalcitrant since germination percentage is reduced with loss of moisture content. Germination did not differ on moist filter paper, semi-immersion (water up to half of the seed diameter) or complete immersion (water up to double of the seed diameter). Seeds did not germinate when stored in a closed bottle with water (that is, under low oxygen concentration), but remained viable for up to 8 weeks under this condition. The capacity to germinate in water with minimum oxygen availability may be considered ecologically advantageous in a swamp habitat. On the other hand, the capacity to germinate in moist filter paper indicates that, in natural conditions, the seed can germinate, provided there is a critical minimum of water availability. We concluded that the germination responses per se are not enough to explain the palm tussocks spatial pattern, but they are very well tuned with the conditions of the transitional zone between channels/pits (ever flooded micro-sites) and mounds (well-drained micro-sites), in which the species occurs in the swamp forest.  相似文献

The relationships among floristic, structural and physiognomic variables of the tree component, flooding regime variations and soil fertility were investigated in a riparian forest fragment (ca. 43 ha) in the Rio Botucaraí watershed near the confluence with the Rio Jacuí, southern Brazil. All the trees with a dbh ≥ 15 cm were surveyed in 100 contiguous 10 × 10 m plots and soil chemical and textural variables were obtained from the analyses of 15 topsoil samples (0–20 cm depth) collected at different locations. The sample sites encompass all the topographic variation of the area. We used canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to seek correlations between environmental variables and tree component distribution. The 1,547 surveyed individuals belonged to 30 species and 16 botanical families. The Shannon diversity index (H′) and the Pielou equability (J′) were 1.995 and 0.586 nats ind.−1, respectively. Sebastiania commersoniana, Casearia sylvestris, Eugenia uniflora and Eugenia hyemalis presented the highest importance values. Species’ densities chiefly correlated with site elevation, flooding regime and soil chemical fertility. The analyses of ecological categories (EC) revealed that most species are heliophylous and typical of early successional stages. Richness and diversity (P < 0.001) variations from different topographic positions reflect that at the local scale, flooding was a limiting factor for the establishment of certain species suggesting that local processes control species richness and diversity.  相似文献

In the undisturbed floodplain of the Biebrza river (N.E. Poland) wecompared vegetation composition, standing crop and the nutrients in standingcrop to site factors such as flood duration and inundation depth during springfloods, summer water levels and concentrations of chemical constituents inwaterand nutrient release rates from peat. Our analysis shows a number of clearspatial patterns of biotic and abiotic variables in the ca. 1 kmwide river marginal wetland. The distribution of vegetation types follows acertain pattern: Glycerietum maximae close to the river,followed by respectively Caricetum gracilis andCaricetum elatae and finally Calamagrostietumstrictae at the margin of the river plain. Species richnessincreasesand standing crop decreases from the river towards the margin. The elevation ofthe ground surface gently rises with increasing distance from the river; floodduration and flooding depths in spring decrease in the same direction.Groundwater tables in summer are less correlated to the elevation gradient buttend to be closer to the ground surface at the valley margin. These differencesalso lead to a higher amplitude close to the river and a fairly stable watertable far away from the river. Concentrations of major ions and ammoniumincrease towards the river. Nutrient release rates are also higher closer totheriver. Absence and presence of species and the variation in species compositionof the vegetation was explained best by flood variables; variables fromgroundwater explained much less of the variance. Variations in standing cropandnutrients in standing crop corresponded better to the rates of nutrient releasefrom the organic soil than to nutrient concentrations in the soil water. Weconcluded that river hydrology and nutrient release from the soil are clearlyrelated to vegetation composition, species richness and productivity of thevegetation.  相似文献
