Eastern boundary coastal upwelling ecosystems (EBUEs) are highly sensitive to climate variability, particularly to coastal wind change. Here, we test the response of the flesh yield of blue mussels cultured in the northern boundary of the Iberian–Canary current EBUE to climate-related variables. Significant relationships were found between the annual mean, seasonal build-up and phenology of the mussel flesh yield with meteorological variables such as continental runoff, intensity and direction of coastal winds, and solar radiation. Our analysis shows that better flesh yields occur during years characterised by dry winters, accompanied by early springs and followed by summers dominated by strong northerly winds that produce intense upwelling. Compared with other EBUEs, upwelling has weakened in the study area over the last fifty years, implying an overall decrease in mussel flesh yield. However, future climate scenarios suggest that coastal upwelling will intensify over the 21th century, particularly during the summer months, which would lead to a recovery of mussel flesh yield.  相似文献

The relationship between the physical properties of solid food and the masticatory parameters is clarified. Eight solid foods of varying physical properties were chosen. Electromyography of the jaw-closing muscles and mandibular kinematics in eleven young subjects were recorded. The masticatory parameters were derived from the recorded data for the entire mastication process, for the first bite, and in the early, middle, and late stages of mastication. After calculating values relative to the mean value for each subject, nine parameters representing each group were chosen through a cluster analysis. Three principal components were extracted, each of them related to the masticatory time and cycle, minimum jaw opening at the early stage of mastication, and masticatory force. The principal component scores for each food were different, except for one combination in which the physical properties under large and extra-large deformations were similar, despite different breaking properties or small deformation properties. The masticatory parameters did not correlate with the physical properties of food measured for small deformation.  相似文献

Stones of different rock types often accrue different amounts of periphytic algae. Although algal biomass may be positively related to stone roughness, the confounding role of rock chemistry is unclear. This independent effect of rock chemistry on benthic algae was tested using the nutrient-diffusing technique, by incorporating powdered stone, rather than nutrients, into the agar matrix. Rocks tested were sandstone, obsidian, schist, greywacke, pumice, gypsum, limestone, serpentine, and phosphorite. Petri-dishes containing powdered rock and agar, and covered with a permeable cellulose filter, were incubated in eight pools in a granitic stream. Algal biomass did not differ among any of the nine rock types and plain agar control, whereas biomass differed among the concurrently placed nutrient diffusing substrates (the stream was phosphorus-limited). Algal composition was more related to an upstream-downstream gradient (for filamentous algae) and pool-specific effects (deposition of fine sediment for diatoms) than rock chemistry. This study examined the patterns of plant functional trait variation in relation to geomorphology, disturbance and a suite of other environmental factors in the riparian margin of the Upper Hunter River, New South Wales, Australia. Vegetation was surveyed on three geomorphic surfaces (point bar, bench and bank) along a 5.5‐km stretch of the Upper Hunter River. Functional traits relating to plant growth and reproduction were collected for the identified species. anova and principal components analysis were used to compare the trait assemblages of species associated with each geomorphic unit. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to investigate trait variation with respect to environmental variables. There were clear differences in the plant functional trait assemblages associated with the three geomorphic units. Generally the point bar was associated with species that were herbaceous, with small seed mass, a short stature and a high specific leaf area (SLA). Conversely, the bench was associated with grasses that had unassisted seed dispersal and intermediate seed mass and SLA, while species on the bank had tall stature, large seed mass, a high SLA and a perennial life cycle. Variation along the primary gradient of plant functional trait composition was most strongly related to disturbance frequency and to a lesser extent soil nutrients and the proportion of clay and silt, while variation along the secondary gradient was associated with variation in substrate texture as well as soil nutrients.  相似文献

How protective are refuges? Quantifying algal protection in rock crevices   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
1. Refuges can be functionally important if they harbour sufficient organisms during disturbance to augment population recovery. I quantified the protection of stream algae in crevice refuges using the applied, severe disturbance of scrubbing. Scrubbing effectively removed visible surface algae, and algae remaining on stones were considered protected. 2. In a field experiment, substrata with different quantities of crevice (glass bottles; greywacke; schist; pumice) were incubated in a channelised stream. The possible influence of growth conditions was investigated concurrently; half of the substrata were suspended in the water column, the rest were placed on the bottom (providing differential access to grazers and exposing them to different flow conditions). 3. Rougher substrata had greater total algal biomass than smoother substrata; this pattern resulted from more algal biomass in crevices of the rougher substrata. Protection from scrubbing ranged from about 5% of total algal biomass on glass and greywacke to 80% on pumice. In contrast, algal biomass removed by scrubbing was similar among the experimental substrata. Suspended substrata had more chironomid grazers than those on the bottom, and also greater algal biomass, possibly because of high algal concentrations in the chironomid retreats. 4. A survey of stones from three rivers supported the experimental results; namely, rough pumice protected more algae from scrubbing than did smoother greywacke. 5. In a separate experimental assay, there was no difference in algal growth on agar plates with and without added powdered rock substrata, suggesting that crevice characteristics and not substratum chemistry produced the differences in algal assemblages between rough and smooth surfaces. 6. Results indicate that rough stream stones may protect sufficient algae to augment their recovery in streams following disturbance.  相似文献

Twenty breadfruit cultivars growing in afield genebank at Kahanu Garden, National Tropical Botanical Garden, Hana, Maui, Hawaii, were evaluated for sensory attributes and nutrient composition. A taste panel scored eight flavor/aroma attributes, five textural attributes, and color. There were significant differences (P ≤ 0.01) in aroma, visual texture, flavor intensity, sweetness, starchiness, moistness, stringiness, firmness, and color. The greatest differences were in color and texture. Nutrient analyses showed significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) for energy, carbohydrates, ash, crude protein, potassium, magnesium, sodium, iron, copper, and zinc. Considering the versatility of breadfruit as a food, its ease of production, and its nutritional value, the numerous good quality flavorful cultivars available should be more widely grown for sustainable agriculture and food security.  相似文献

Measuring the fine-scale heterogeneity of stones and other substrates is a challenge for benthic ecologists. I describe a method for measuring the roughness of stones that is based on the ratio of two surface area measurements: one that follows substrate contours and one based on a similar-sized modified spheroid. This roughness index is easily measured, assesses the entire surface of stones, and enables the measurement of replicate stones. Roughness measurements of 14 rock types demonstrated that values obtained were consistent with perceived roughness and porosity. Application of the roughness index to a published data set produced a curvilinear relationship between stone roughness and the biomass of algae in roughness-associated crevices.  相似文献

Many marine invertebrate larvae respond behaviourally to environmental settlement cues, yet behaviours are often only inferred from settlement patterns or are limited to laboratory studies. The behaviour of wild cypris larvae of Semibalanus balanoides L. was filmed on settlement tiles in the field. Tiles were of five different textures with a nested treatment of crude conspecific adult extract (AE). The effects of texture and AE on eleven defined behaviours were analysed. Texture affected the gross and net exploratory distances, velocity, acceleration and time spent exploring. AE attracted more cyprids during the first minute of immersion and increased the time spent on surfaces. Relatively few arrivals that either travel far and fast, or exit the surface rapidly, may indicate a lower chance of settlement. An increase in time spent on a surface may increase the probability of being in contact with the surface when the sign stimulus to settle occurs.  相似文献
