Synopsis Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, sampled from a transect along a pollution gradient show a trend of declining growth and physical condition. This trend is apparent in the mean size of 0-group croaker, in their recent growth rate measured by marginal otolith increment widths, in longer term growth rate as indicated by relative otolith weights, and in general physical condition as measured by an index of condition of the caudal fin. We suggest that these measures are indicators of stress associated with environmental conditions. Because croaker from different positions along the pollution gradient were distinguishable, it appears that they remain for extended periods within areas of degraded environmental quality.  相似文献

Heterochrony, an evolutionary change in developmental processes, is one of the major proximate causes of morphological diversity of organisms. It has been reported in the medaka Oryzias latipes that higher-latitude larvae have a genetic tendency to complete fin ray formation at larger body sizes, which results in relatively shorter anal and dorsal fins in adults. However, this latitudinal, heterochronic variation in fin length in the wild may be partially explained by latitudinal differences in thermal environments, if temperatures affect the timing of fin ray formation. Common-environment experiments revealed that the body size at which fin pterygiophore (a basal skeleton of fin rays) formation was completed was larger in higher-latitude larvae than in lower-latitude larvae at all temperatures examined, supporting the proposal that fin ray formation of the former is genetically delayed. However, phenotypic plasticity in response to temperature was also evident; lower temperatures caused delayed fin ray formation until a larger body size had been achieved in both high- and low-latitude larvae. These observations suggest that habitat temperatures also contribute to the latitudinal difference in the timing of fin development, magnifying phenotypic variation in fin length across latitudes. We discuss reasons for this positive covariance between genetic and environmental effects on the latitudinal, heterochronic variation, from the viewpoint of local adaptation and evolution of phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

Injuries frequently accumulate with age in nature. Despite the commonality of injury and the resulting impairment, there are limited experimental data for the effects of impairment on life history trade‐offs between reproduction and survival in insects. We tested the effects of artificial injury and the resulting impairment on the reproductive costs and behavior of male medflies, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae). Treatment flies were impaired by amputating tarsomere segments 2–5 from the right foreleg at either eclosion or age 22 days. The effect of impairment and age on the cost of reproduction was tested by varying the timing of female availability among the treatments. Courtship behavior and copulation rates were observed hourly from age 2–5 days to determine the effects of impairment on reproductive behavior. Female access combined with the impairment reduced the life expectancy of males more than the impairment alone, whereas the health effect of amputation was influenced by age. Conversely, the risk of death due to impairment was not influenced by the males' mating status prior to amputation. The males' copulation success was reduced due to impairment, whereas courtship behavior was not affected. Impairment does not reduce the males' impulse to mate, but decreases the females' receptivity to copulation, while also increasing the cost of each successful mating. Overall, minor impairment lowers the reproductive success of males and reduces longevity.  相似文献

The shrimp Penaeus chinensis at moult stage Do were subjected to one of the three following treatments: bilateral eyestalk ablation, amputation of the fifth pair of pereiopods, and both of the above treatments. Two consecutive ecdyses after treatments were followed. Intact animals served as control. Precocious moulting was exhibited in all treated groups. Eyestalk ablation shortened the time to the first ecdysis more than does limb amputation. Additive effect was found in shrimps receiving both treatments. The duration between the first and second ecdyses in treated shrimps was shorter than that of intact animals, but the durations in the three treated groups were not significantly different from one another. Regenerates of limbs appeared after the second ecdysis following limb amputation. Further, change of body colour from black and green to red and white was observed in shrimps with eyestalk ablation.  相似文献

Heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60) is a kind of highly conserved immunogenic molecule involved in a wide range of biochemical processes in response to external stressors. Its multifunction in regulating immune responses and modulating signal pathway interests us in investigating its role in fin regeneration that has become an excellent and interesting model for studying the molecular basis of morphogenesis. We firstly clarified basical process and crucial period of caudal fins regeneration in Paramisgurnus dabryanus by histological analysis. Then we cloned full-length cDNA of hsp60 from P. dabryanus (designated as PdHsp60) by RACE method. The cDNA contains a 124 bp 5′UTR, a 1731 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding 576 amino acids and a 510bp 3′UTR (Accession no.: KF544774). The phylogenetic tree shows that the PdHsp60 fits within the hsp60 clade. And quantitative RT-PCR detected the PdHsp60 began to increase rapidly its expression at 1 dpa and reached its peak at 2 dpa. Next, spatial distribution analysis of PdHsp60 in fins showed that PdHsp60 located mainly in the deeper lay of regenerated epidermis when PdHsp60 expressed most. After the PdHsp60 had been cloned into the pET-32a vector, SDS-PAGE and Western blotting analysis confirmed that the PdHsp60 protein was efficiently expressed in Escherichia coli BL21. These findings have revealed that PdHsp60, a highly conserved gene related to the innate immune system and stress response during vertebrate evolution, is involved in response to wounding stimulation—in the formation of wound epidermis which occurs as the first phase of fin regeneration after fin amputation in caudal fin regeneration.  相似文献

 Several patterns of feeding behaviors have been documented in benthophagous fishes. The foraging behavior of the maiden goby, Pterogobius virgo, was studied at Kurahashi Island in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Pterogobius virgo foraged mostly on polychaetes by volume from among several available prey items by digging in the sandy bottom. The digging behavior comprised swing of only pectoral fins or of both pectoral fins and body. Pectoral fin swing exposed the cryptic prey within the bottom, and fins and body swing exposed the prey and washed the sediment away. The swings were repeatedly and continuously conducted at a site during the daytime, making a pit several centimeters deep in which the fish was located. After the prey was exposed, the fish immediately and rapidly picked up the prey. Polychaetes were abundant prey in the sediment, occurring in the layer 3–5 cm deep from the bottom surface in the study area. In this goby, spot-fixed fin digging, the first documentation of feeding habits in gobies, may be effective for feeding on the most valuable prey, i.e., polychaetes, which may be otherwise unavailable for this fish.
