Bioassays were used to study the infectivity of cytoplasmic polyhedrosis viruses (CPVs), nuclear polyhedrosis viruses (NPVs) and entomopoxviruses (EPVs) contained in 16 nests of the paper waspPolistes hebraues F. in Réunion Island. Several virosis were propagated from 6 nest contents in 5 Lepidoptera:Catopsilia thauruma Saalmüller,Catopsilia florella F.,Callixena versicolora Mabille,Polydesma umbricola Boisduval andEagris sabadius Boisduval. Each of the previous species supported the development of one or two virosis and therefore, wasp nests must be considered as accumulating centres where infectivity of occluded entomoviruses is preserved. The accurate origin of the virosis propagated through bioassays was searched for using ecological investigations on similar natural diseases, REN analysis and a cross-transmission test onSpodoptera mauritia Boisduval. The nuclear polyhedrosis and one cytoplasmic polyhedrosis appearing in bioassays can be assigned respectively to viruses produced byC. thauruma andC. versicolora; the other virosis must be considered as developing in alternate or substitution hosts. Wasp nests could therefore be used to detect the presence of specific viruses in an environment and to collect new virus isolates.  相似文献

This study provides the first molecular phylogeny of the social wasp subgenus Polistella (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Polistes) from Vietnam. Fragments of the mitochondrial COI and 16S rRNA genes were used to reconstruct the phylogenetic trees among 38 Polistes species plus two out-group species (Vespa soror du Buysson and Ropalidia fasciata (Fabricius)). Our results support the existence of several species-groups, including two that are congruent with the previous stigma and Stenopolistes groups defined on the basis of morphology. Moreover, we recovered a clade including the stigma group and the two species P. humilis and P. variabilis that was sister to all other species of Polistella. However, the results also challenged the definition of other groups of Polistella based on morphological data, as well as the definition of two species: P. brunus and P. affinis. This first study calls for further analyses including morphological characters to clarify the taxonomy and the classification of the group.  相似文献

The genus Balcha Walker (Eupelmidae) is recorded for the first time in South Korea, with one newly described species and one newly recorded species. Both sexes of Balcha opaca Fusu sp. n. are described, and the presumed male of B. dictyota Gibson is described for the first time. The newly described species is peculiar in having a comparatively darker and less shiny mesoscutum. In other species of the genus the mesoscutum has brilliant metallic colours that contrast with dorsal dark bands along areas of much finer sculpture.  相似文献

  1. Torymus sinensis Kamijo was released into Europe to control the Asian chestnut gall wasp Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu, proving to be an effective biocontrol agent.
  2. In Japan, hybrids between this exotic parasitoid and the native congeneric Torymus beneficus Yasumatsu and Kamijo have been recorded, whereas no case of hybridization with natives has been reported for Europe.
  3. The seasonal phenology of the Torymus species was investigated in north‐west Italy and 172 997 chestnut galls (Castanea spp.), 7866 oak galls (Quercus spp.), 29 wild rose galls (Rosa spp.) and 44 bramble galls (Rubus spp.) were collected over a 5‐year period.
  4. The seasonal flight activity was recorded for eight native Torymus species [Torymus affinis (Fonscolombe), Torymus auratus (Müller), Torymus bedeguaris (L.), Torymus calcaratus Nees, Torymus cyaneus Walker, Torymus flavipes (Walker), Torymus geranii (Walker) and Torymus notatus (Walker)] and five of them were found to overlap with T. sinensis flight, namely T. affinis, T. auratus, T. flavipes, T. geranii and T. notatus.
  5. Among the Torymus native species, T. notatus revealed to be morphologically and phylogenetically closely related to T. sinensis, thus suggesting hybridization potential.

Alarm pheromones are used in many social insects to elicit an alarm response of nestmates towards disturbances. This chemical alarm channel is especially used by species nesting in closed environments. Polistes gallicus paper wasps typically found their nests on open substrates where visual and vibrational stimuli could be more important than the chemical one to alarm the colony. We investigated, through field bioassays, if, also in this species, workers venom is still the source of alarm pheromones. Our results show that venom volatiles are able to increase the colony defence reaction stimulating more individuals to attack and sting the object of disturbance. Therefore our results suggest the hypothesis that chemical alarm is independent of nesting habit (concealed vs exposed) within the Polistes genus.  相似文献

Sex ratio theory is one of the most productive fields in research on evolutionary biology. Pollinating fig wasps, due to their particular natural life history, are considered to be a valuable model for the study of sex ratio evolution. A great deal of research concerning the factors that affect pollinator fig wasp (Agaonidae) progeny sex ratio has been done, and at present three main factors (haplodiploidy, local mate competition and inbreeding) are found to be important at the population level. However, there still exists variation between empirical data and model predictions. Another factor to which little thought has been given before is the effect of non-pollinating fig wasps (NPFWs) which parasitize in the larvae gall of pollinator thus kill pollinators and exploit the fig/fig pollinator mutualistic systems. In this study, we focus on why and how non-pollinating fig wasps distort pollinator fig wasp’s original sex ratio. Through controlling the number of ovipositing foundresses inside a fig, combined with the observation of ovipositing behavior and sequence, we studied three species of wasp in the figs of a dioecious fig Ficus semicordata including the pollinator Ceratosolen gravely and NPFWs Platyneura cunia, Sycoscapter trifemmensis in tropical area of Xishuangbanna from September to December 2009. First, we observed the timing of oviposition of all fig wasps utilizing F. semicordata and found differences when compared to previous studies. Such as P. cunia is the fourth rather then the secondary fig wasps to oviposit on the syconia approximately 10 days after the pollinator. S. trifemmensis oviposits much earlier than previously thought, 14–32 days after the pollinators. We examined the spatial location of male and female progeny of the pollinator. We found foundresses of pollinator prefer to use innermost ovules first. Only at high offspring numbers were the outer ovules used. More male pollinator offspring were developed near the fig cavity, while female pollinator offspring were more evenly distributed among ovule layers. As pollinator offspring numbers increased, this phenomenon became more pronounced. This pattern of segregation of male larvae gall in inner ovules and female larvae gall in outer ovules suggests that female offspring might be more vulnerable to attack by parasitic wasps that oviposit from outside the syconium. Experiments later demonstrated that NPFWs are restricted by their ovipositor length and they prefer to or can only lay their eggs into ovules near the fig wall. Then we examined the spatial location of NPFWs and compared this with the spatial location of male/female progeny of pollinator. NPFWs had a high probability of parasitizing female pollinator larvae. Thus, NPFWs have a substantial effect on the sex ratio of the pollinator, as parasitism risk decreases towards the center of the syconium, where inner ovules provide enemy-free space for most of male pollinator offspring. Partial correlation analyse shows that sex ratio of pollinator progeny has a positive relationship with the number of NPFWs. We suggest that the resulting gradient in offspring viability between male and female contributes to selection on pollinators’ for a less femalebiased sex ratio. When the affect of NPFWs was excluded, the pollinator sex ratio was not in good agreement with local mate competition theory, although it was still female-biased. In addition, the average number of offspring per foundress decreased with increasing foundress number, but pollinator sex ratio was positively related to brood size. Thus, pollinator females do not appear to adjust their sex ratio to foundress density directly, but use brood size and foundress density simultaneously as cues to assess potential LMC.  相似文献

A gall midge that induces thick lenticular galls on leaflets of Pueraria species (Fabaceae) in Japan, mainland China, Taiwan and South Korea is described as Pitydiplosis puerariae sp. nov. (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). Tanaostigmodes puerariae (Hymenoptera: Tanaostigmatidae), described earlier from mainland China as an inducer of the lenticular gall, is regarded to be an inquiline. Pitydiplosis puerariae is distinguishable from the only known congener, the Nearctic Pitydiplosis packardi, by the male genitalia with entire aedeagus and with hypoproct that is as long as cerci and bilobed with a U‐shaped emargination. DNA sequencing data indicate the existence of three genetically different intraspecific groups: (i) “YNT‐montana group” induces galls on Pueraria montana on the Yaeyama Islands, Japan and in northern Taiwan; (ii) “CT‐montana group” on P. montana in central Taiwan; (iii) and “JCK‐lobata group” on Pueraria lobata in mainland China, South Korea and Japan north of Okinoerabu Island. A possible diversification scenario of the three groups is hypothesized based on DNA sequencing data and geohistorical information. A distribution gap of the gall midge on five islands between Tokunoshima and Ishigaki Islands, Japan was confirmed by intensive field surveys. Ecological traits and adult behavior of Pity. puerariae are also described. Its possibility as a potential biological control agent against P. lobata seems counter‐indicated.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. We have previously demonstrated pre-pupal diapause in a tropical population of Leptopilima boulardi Barbotin, Carton and Kelner-Pillault (Cynipidae, Hymenoptera), a larval parasitoid of Drosophila melanogaster Meigen. Prepupal diapause was induced by low temperature (17.5°C) but absent at 25°C; it was independent of photoperiod.
2. Four populations which originated from different latitudes (4°S to 44°N) exhibit the same response to temperature without any major genetic geographical variation.
3. In temperate areas, this diapause may permit a phenological and temporal coincidence between the parasitoid and its host whose larval growth is only possible for temperatures above 13°C.
4. The significance of the persistence of this diapause in tropical areas is discussed.  相似文献
