Most studies on selection in plants estimate female fitness components and neglect male mating success, although the latter
might also be fundamental to understand adaptive evolution. Information from molecular genetic markers can be used to assess
determinants of male mating success through parentage analyses. We estimated paternal selection gradients on floral traits
in a large natural population of the herb Mimulus guttatus using a paternity probability model and maximum likelihood methods. This analysis revealed more significant selection gradients
than a previous analysis based on regression of estimated male fertilities on floral traits. There were differences between
results of univariate and multivariate analyses most likely due to the underlying covariance structure of the traits. Multivariate
analysis, which corrects for the covariance structure of the traits, indicated that male mating success declined with distance
from and depended on the direction to the mother plants. Moreover, there was directional selection for plants with fewer open
flowers which have smaller corollas, a smaller anther–stigma separation, more red dots on the corolla and a larger fluctuating
asymmetry therein. For most of these traits, however, there was also stabilizing selection indicating that there are intermediate
optima for these traits. The large number of significant selection gradients in this study shows that even in relatively large
natural populations where not all males can be sampled, it is possible to detect significant paternal selection gradients,
and that such studies can give us valuable information required to better understand adaptive plant evolution.

The timing of breeding may not only affect breeding patterns such as the overlap of chick rearing period with the peak in
food availability but also the opportunity for extra-pair mating. A negative relationship has been predicted between extra-pair
paternity and breeding synchrony, assuming that male extra-pair activity is traded against mate guarding and parenting duties.
In contrast, if female ability to assess male quality is temporally constrained, sperm competition might be a positive function
of breeding synchrony. Here we manipulated the progress of nesting by nest material exchange within nesting aggregations to
see whether the timing of breeding affects extra-pair paternity in house sparrows. We found that late broods within nesting
clusters contained extra-pair young more often than early broods, but breeding synchrony did not turn out to be a significant
predictor of extra-pair paternity. Our study indicates that temporal constraints of male extra-pair activity may account for
extra-pair paternity levels, but it is also possible that late-breeding females may accept extra-pair copulations to ensure
egg fertilization. 相似文献

Summary There has recently been a burgeoning interest in the analysis of paternity patterns for natural populations because of its relevance to population genetic phenomena such as the distance between successful mates, relative male reproductive success and gene flow. In this paper we develop a method of analyzing populational patterns of paternity, the fractional paternity method, and compare its performance to two other commonly used methods of paternity analysis (simple exclusion and the most-likely methods). We show that the fractional method is the most accurate method for determining populational patterns of paternity because it assigns paternity to all progeny examined, and because it avoids biases inherent in the other paternity analysis methods when model assumptions are met. In particular, it avoids a systematic bias of the most-likely paternity assignment method, which has a tendency to over-assign paternity of progeny to certain male parents with a greater than average number of homozygous marker loci. We also demonstrate the effect of linkage of some of the marker loci on paternity assignment, showing how the knowledge of the linkage phase of male and female parents in the population can significantly improve the accuracy of the estimates of populational patterns of paternity. Knowledge of the linkage phase of individuals in a population is usually unknown and difficult to assess without progeny testing, which involves considerable labor. However, we show how the linkage phase of hermaphroditic individuals in a population can be obtained in conjunction with the paternity analysis if progeny can be obtained from each hermaphroditic individual in the population, thereby avoiding the problem of traditional progeny testing. Applications of the fractional paternity approach developed herein should contribute significantly to our understanding of the mating patterns in, and hence the evolution of, natural populations. 相似文献

Females tend to provide more parental care than males. Previous efforts to account for this have been confused because it is difficult to express the costs of care for males and females in the same currency. Here I propose a null model that does so, using the Fisherian constraint that total male and female reproduction must be equal. The model shows that, contrary to a number of recent analyses, lower probability of parentage for males does tend to make males less likely than females to provide care. It also shows how sexual selection stemming from premating asymmetries in investment promotes similar post-mating asymmetries. 相似文献

Monogamous male birds typically allocate less effort to courtship and more to parental behaviour than males of polygynous species. The seasonal pattern of testosterone (T) secretion varies accordingly. Monogamous males exhibit a spring peak in plasma T followed by lower levels during the parental phase, while males of polygynous species continue to court females and maintain T at higher levels. To determine whether testosterone underlies the trade-off between mating and parental effort, we treated male dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) with exogenous T and compared the reproductive success (RS) of T-treated males (T-males) to that of controls. T-males had lower apparent annual RS than controls, probably because elevated T reduced parental care. Nevertheless, annual genetic RS of the treatment groups was similar because (i) T-males suffered fewer losses in genetic RS due to extra-pair fertilizations (EPFs), and (ii) T-males gained more genetic RS through their own EPFs. This is the first hormonal manipulation of an avian phenotype shown to have influenced male RS through EPFs. Together with other studies, it suggests that testosterone may have mediated the evolution of inter- and intraspecific differences in allocation of reproductive effort to mate attraction and parental care. 相似文献

Heterodichogamy is a form of sex expression in which protandrous and protogynous individuals coexist, and is considered to
be a mechanism that avoids selfing and promotes disassortative mating. We examined mating patterns in a heterodichogamous
maple, Acer mono, using microsatellite markers. Parentage analysis revealed a selfing rate of only 9.8%. Disassortative mating between flowering
types significantly exceeded within-type mating, but the mating patterns were better explained by flowering phenology (i.e.,
the temporal overlap between the female and male stages). Heterodichogamy in A. mono thus appears to promote outcrossing without requiring obligate self- or cross-incompatibility systems, although it did not
guarantee disassortative mating. Multiple-regression analysis suggested that successful reproduction of pollen parents significantly
increased with increased flower production and reciprocal flowering synchrony, but decreased only marginally with mating distance,
although the distribution of mating distances suggested leptokurtic dispersal of pollen. 相似文献

Despite the profound influence of relatedness on mating and cooperative behavior in humans, the cues men use to assess paternity and guide offspring-directed behavior have yet to be fully resolved. According to leading theories of kin detection, kinship cues should influence both sexual and altruistic motivations because of fitness consequences associated with inbreeding and welfare tradeoff decisions, respectively. Prior work with paternity assessment, however, has generally evaluated candidate cues solely by demonstrating associations with altruism. Here we (i) replicate past work that found effects of phenotypic resemblance and perceived partner fidelity on offspring investment; and (ii) evaluate whether both phenotypic resemblance and perceived partner fidelity meet the more stringent criteria suggested by theory—that is, whether they also predict inbreeding aversions. We report on two studies, one from a population-based sample of Finnish fathers (N?=?390), the other from a Mechanical Turk sample (N?=?700), and furnish evidence in strong support of perceived partner fidelity as a cue to paternity. Support for resemblance as a cue to paternity was decidedly weaker. We discuss a non-kin-based role that resemblance might play in altruistic decision-making, consider whether men might use additional kinship cues to meet the computational challenges associated with paternity assessment, and provide suggestions for future research. 相似文献

We investigated the effect of population density of compatible neighbours on inbreeding level of Primula sieboldii, a heterostylous clonal herb. Pollinator availability, seed set, selfing rate, diversity of pollen donors, and fitness of
progenies were compared between less and more isolated genets, which differed in the number of compatible opposite-morph genets
within 20 m, the range at which most pollen flow occurred. Although pollinator availability did not differ between the two
groups, seed set and diversity of pollen donors in more isolated genets were significantly lower than in less isolated genets.
Additionally, the mean selfing rates of less and more isolated genets were 1.3 and 36.7%, respectively, and the mean leaf
area of the self-fertilized seedlings was 70 to 40% smaller than that of outcrossed seedlings of the same mother genet. Due
to this large inbreeding depression, it is unlikely that self-fertilized seedlings could successfully establish in natural
habitats and hence the inbreeding level in the next generation around the more isolated genet would not increase rapidly.
However, the possibility of mating between full-sibs would increase because the diversity of pollen donors was low and both
pollen and seed dispersal were spatially restricted. Thus the inbreeding level of the next generations would gradually increase
around the more isolated genets owing to biparental inbreeding. This study suggested that the population density of compatible
neighbours has a critical impact on the future inbreeding level within P. sieboldii populations. 相似文献

Genetic parentage studies of socially monogamous birds reveal a widespread prevalence of extra-pair paternity. Variation in
extra-pair paternity among individuals may depend on how different individuals benefit from extra-pair fertilisations and
on the opportunity to pursue extra-pair copulations. A long-term study of sand martins (Riparia riparia) in Hungary allowed us to examine patterns of extra-pair fertilisations in a large colony of over 3,000 breeding pairs with
many known age individuals. We used multi-locus DNA fingerprinting to determine whether extra-pair fertilisations occur when
females are paired to (1) presumably low quality mates, or (2) genetically similar or dissimilar mates, and whether extra-pair
fertilisations result in offspring of higher quality. Extra-paternal young were found in 38% of 47 broods and comprised 19%
of 190 offspring. Males that lost paternity did not differ significantly from others in age or body condition. Social mates
of broods containing extra-pair offspring did not differ in genetic similarity from pairs without extra-pair offspring. Furthermore,
there was no significant difference in body condition between extra-pair young and their maternal half-siblings. We were unable
to assign paternity and therefore cannot exclude the possibility that extra-pair males differed from the within-pair males
they cuckolded, in age, body condition or genetic similarity with the female. We found a positive relationship between paternity
losses and breeding density, suggesting that low breeding density may constrain opportunities for seeking extra-pair copulations. 相似文献
