The fast-start is an ecologically relevant behavior pattern in fishes. The present article analyses the distribution of five
continuous kinematic traits (latency for response initiation, time to maximum angular velocity, time to maximum displacement
velocity, maximum angular velocity, and maximum displacement velocity) in eight of the eleven species described in Eaton (66:65–81,
1977). Phylogenetic generalized least square estimation of ancestor states demonstrated evolutionary changes in maximum angular
velocity and maximum displacement velocity, consistent with species differences in the same variables. These changes in maximum
velocity are also correlated (phylogenetically independent contrasts) with the mean body sizes of all species, pointing to
the possibility that body size was an evolutionary constraint on maximum velocities. The conservation of the other traits
suggest that they are mainly constrained by neural control, and a trade-off between neural and body size-constraints is proposed

Following the results developed in a previous paper, an equation describing the evolutionary response to selection is extended
from finite- to infinite-dimensional traits. The selection gradient and evolutionary response are then computed for a large
class of infinite-dimensional traits of broad biological interest. In this framework, traits are modeled as Gaussian processes,
and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces constitute a primary tool.

Delusions are currently characterised as false beliefs produced by incorrect inference about external reality (DSM IV). This
inferential conception has proved hard to link to explanations pitched at the level of neurobiology and neuroanatomy. This
paper provides that link via a neurocomputational theory, based on evolutionary considerations, of the role of the prefrontal
cortex in regulating offline cognition. When pathologically neuromodulated the prefrontal cortex produces hypersalient experiences
which monopolise offline cognition. The result is characteristic psychotic experiences and patterns of thought. This bottom-up
account uses neural network theory to integrate recent theories of the role of dopamine in delusion with the insights of inferential
accounts. It also provides a general model for evolutionary psychiatry which avoids theoretical problems imported from evolutionary

Knowledge on the morphology of Early Triassic ophiuroids is very limited, in spite of the relatively high number of described species. This hampers attempts to use morphology-based phylogenetic analyses in order to explore the early diversification of the ophiuroid modern clades between the latest Paleozoic and the early Mesozoic. Here, a new ophiuroid from the Early Triassic of southern Idaho (USA) is described and assigned to the new taxon Shoshonura brayardi Thuy nov. gen., nov. sp. It is part of an exceptional Early Triassic faunal assemblage recently described as the Paris Biota. On account of the arm morphology and the shape of the arm spines and arm spine articulations, Shoshonura brayardi nov. gen., nov. sp. is considered a basal member of the suborder Ophiodermatina. 相似文献

Giant viruses contain large genomes, encode many proteins atypical for viruses, replicate in large viral factories, and tend to infect protists. The giant virus replication factories can in turn be infected by so called virophages, which are smaller viruses that negatively impact giant virus replication. An example is Mimiviruses that infect the protist Acanthamoeba and that are themselves infected by the virophage Sputnik. This study examines the evolutionary dynamics of this system, using mathematical models. While the models suggest that the virophage population will evolve to increasing degrees of giant virus inhibition, it further suggests that this renders the virophage population prone to extinction due to dynamic instabilities over wide parameter ranges. Implications and conditions required to avoid extinction are discussed. Another interesting result is that virophage presence can fundamentally alter the evolutionary course of the giant virus. While the giant virus is predicted to evolve toward increasing its basic reproductive ratio in the absence of the virophage, the opposite is true in its presence. Therefore, virophages can not only benefit the host population directly by inhibiting the giant viruses but also indirectly by causing giant viruses to evolve toward weaker phenotypes. The morphology of the venomous limbs (forcipules) of 13 species of Strigamia and of six other geophilomorphs was studied with light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and, for a subsample, with confocal laser scanning microscopy. In all Strigamia species a well-distinct denticle is present invariantly on the inner side of the terminal article (tarsungulum), in sub-basal position, just proximal to a faint transverse sulcus and a cuticular introflexion that corresponds to the insertion point of a tendon. Strigamia species differ mainly in size and shape of the denticle and thickness of the distal part of the tarsungulum, suggesting some functional diversity in piercing and handling prey. Anatomical evidence supports the hypothesis that the tarsungulum corresponds to two ancestral articles and a denticle at the basis of the tarsungulum originated multiple times within geophilomorphs, however in different positions corresponding to either the ancestral sub-terminal article (in Strigamia, other Geophiloidea and some Schendylidae) or the ancestral terminal article (in the himantariid Thracophilus). 相似文献

Recently, biologist and philosophers have been much attracted by an evolutionary view of knowledge, so-called evolutionary epistemology. Developing this insight, the present paper argues that our cognitive abilities are the outcome of organic evolution, and that, conversely, evolution itself may be described as a cognition process. Furthermore, it is argued that the key to an adequate evolutionary epistemology lies in a system-theoretical approach to evolution which grows from, but goes beyond, Darwin's theory of natural selection. 相似文献

A naturalistic account of the strengths and limitations of cladistic practice is offered. The success of cladistics is claimed
to be largely rooted in the parsimony-implementing congruence test. Cladists may use the congruence test to iteratively refine
assessments of homology, and thereby increase the odds of reliable phylogenetic inference under parsimony. This explanation
challenges alternative views which tend to ignore the effects of parsimony on the process of character individuation in systematics.
In a related theme, the concept of homeostatic property cluster natural kinds is used to explain why cladistics is well suited
to provide a traditional, verbal reference system for the evolutionary properties of species and clades. The advantages of
more explicitly probabilistic approaches to phylogenetic inference appear to manifest themselves in situations where evolutionary
homeostasis has for the most part broken down, and predictive classifications are no longer possible. 相似文献
