Abstract. Although there are many studies in searching for the most useful community diversity index, the importance of choosing an appropriate parameter has been neglected. Here, we examined dominance and diversity in early post-fire chaparral communities using different variables, i.e. plant density, cover and biomass. Significant different results were produced by applying different parameters and the difference may be caused by the inconsistency in density, cover, and biomass allocated in each life form. Among the three parameters, biomass was most successful in detecting differences among communities because the apportionment of biomass among species was more variable than that of density. Although the three species variables represent different aspects of community properties and their relative performance may vary among communities, we recommend the use of biomass or productivity data as the most appropriate variable because it can best represent per capita resource use and resource partitioning among organisms in competitive situations.  相似文献

Cover is the most frequently used measure of abundance in vegetation surveys of grasslands, and various qualitative and semi-quantitative methods have been developed for visual estimation of this metric. Field survey is usually made with a point-grid plate. The frequency distributions of cover derived from point-grid counts follow a beta distribution. Combining point-grid counts from a field survey and the beta distribution for a statistical analysis, we developed an effort-saving cover-measurement method. Cover is measured with a transparent plastic plate on which, for example, 10 × 10 = 100 points are arranged in a lattice with 1-cm grid spacing (thus, one point count represents 1 cm2 of cover). N quadrats are set out at randomly dispersed sites in a grassland, and, in each, the plastic plate is used for making counts. The number of grid points located above a given species is counted in every quadrat until the number of counted points reaches a given value c, which is determined in advance. If the number of counted points reaches c in a quadrat, the count is stopped and the quadrat is classified in the category “>c”. In quadrats where c is not attained, full point counts above the species bodies are made. Let g be the number of observed quadrats whose cover is ≤c. Using these g cover measurements and the number of quadrats (N − g) with cover >c, we can quantitatively estimate cover for each species and the spatial pattern index value based on the maximum likelihood method. In trial counts using this method, the time savings varied between 5% and 41%, depending on the shape of the cover frequency distribution. The mean cover value estimates agreed well with conventional measures without a stopping point (i.e., based on full counts of all points in each quadrat).  相似文献

为有效防控外来入侵植物,在广西陆川县人工林区进行植被嵌套样方调查,分析群落物种组成与植被结构和环境因子之间的相关性。Mantel检验表明样方物种组成与样方植被结构的相关性(r=0.208, P=0.002)高于其与环境因子相关性(r=0.084, P=0.051)。MRPP分析表明,有入侵植物阔叶丰花草(Spermacoce alata)、假臭草(Praxelis clematidea)和胜红蓟(Ageratum conyzoides)样方的植被结构与无这3种植物样方的有极显著不同(P 0.01),而有无薇甘菊(Mikainamicrantha)样方的植被结构相似。t检验表明林冠盖度(3.0 m)与这4种植物入侵均无显著相关性(P0.073)。通过增加垂直高度1.5 m以下的植被密度,可以减少阔叶丰花草、假臭草和胜红蓟的入侵,但对抑制薇甘菊入侵无效。因此,植被结构作为过滤器,可能主要作用于植物的种子产生时间、萌发周期和生长习性;以种子方式繁殖的入侵植物能否定植相对更依赖干扰、暴露的裸地;兼具无性和有性繁殖且能攀援和匍匐生长使得薇甘菊能够在不同植被结构的群落中相对随机地定植。  相似文献

ABSTRACT Emerging methods in habitat and wildlife population modeling promise new horizons in conservation but only if these methods provide robust population-habitat linkages. We used Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data to verify and validate newly developed habitat suitability index (HSI) models for 40 priority landbird species in the Central Hardwoods and West Gulf Coastal Plain/Ouachitas Bird Conservation Regions. We considered a species’ HSI model verified if there was a significant rank correlation between mean predicted HSI score and mean observed BBS abundance across the 88 ecological subsections within these Bird Conservation Regions. When we included all subsections, correlations verified 37 models. Models for 3 species were unverified. Rank correlations for an additional 5 species were not significant when analyses included only subsections with BBS abundance >0. To validate models, we developed generalized linear models with mean observed BBS abundance as the response variable and mean HSI score and Bird Conservation Region as predictor variables. We considered verified models validated if the overall model was an improvement over an intercept-only null model and the coefficient on the HSI variable in the model was >0. Validation provided a more rigorous assessment of model performance than verification, and models for 12 species that we verified failed validation. Species whose models failed validation were either poorly sampled by BBS protocols or associated with woodland and shrubland habitats embedded within predominantly open landscapes. We validated models for 25 species. Habitat specialists and species reaching their highest densities in predominantly forested landscapes were more likely to have validated models. In their current form, validated models are useful for conservation planning of priority landbirds and offer both insight into limiting factors at ecoregional scales and a framework for monitoring priority landbird populations from readily available national data sets.  相似文献

Many ant species are highly invasive and are a significant component of disturbed ecosystems. They can have a major suppressive effect upon indigenous invertebrates, including other ants. Despite overwhelming circumstantial evidence for the ecological resourcefulness of many ants, there appears to be no experimental evidence illustrating the habitat breadth of a potentially invasive ant species. We demonstrate here that a particularly opportunistic and locally dominant ant Anoplolepis custodiens, which is a major indigenous African pest, overrides habitat structure to maintain its population level. We compared A. custodiens activity, morphology, foraging behaviour and ant species diversity in artificially established surrogate habitats (cover crops) in a vineyard containing an ample food resource in the form of the honeydew-producing mealybug Planococcus ficus. These cover crops were chosen so as to create highly altered habitats. The ant's ability to overcome these potentially suppressive habitat conditions hinged on its tight mutualism with the mealybug, and on its chasing away mealybug parasitoids. This ant species is predicted to be a latent invasive beyond Africa. It is unlikely to be impeded once it has established a foothold in a variety of novel habitats. It could locally invade to obtain food resources in a wide range of habitat types. Furthermore, in agricultural systems, cover crops are unlikely to control such an ant. Potential invasives such as this ant should be flagged as important quarantine suspects.  相似文献

高效而精确的湿地遥感分类是大范围湿地资源动态监测与管理的必要保障。本研究使用ETM 遥感数据,借助Matlab神经网络工具箱,构建了基于BP神经网络的滨海湿地覆被分类模型,并将其应用于江苏盐城沿海湿地珍禽国家级自然保护区的核心区的自然湿地覆被分类研究中。本研究选择3、4、7、8波段作为输入层变量,单隐藏层设为10个节点,输出层变量对应待划分的8种覆被类型,构建三层式BP神经网络滨海湿地覆被分类模型。结果显示,BP分类总精度为85.91%,Kappa系数为0.8328,与最小距离法和极大似然法的分类总精度相比,分别提高了7.99%和6.08%,Kappa系数也相比提高。研究结果表明,BP神经网络分类法是一种较为有效的湿地遥感影像分类技术,能够提高分类精度。  相似文献

Due to deforestation, intact tropical forest areas are increasingly transformed into a mixture of remaining forest patches and human modified areas. These forest fragments suffer from edge effects, which cause changes in ecological and ecosystem processes, undermining habitat quality and the offer of ecosystem services. Even though detailed and long term studies were developed on the topic of edge effects at local scale, understanding edge effect characteristics in fragmented forests on larger scales and finding indicators for its impact is crucial for predicting habitat loss and developing management options. Here we evaluate the spatial and temporal dimensions of edge effects in large areas using remote sensing. First we executed a neighborhood pixel analysis in 11 LANDSAT Tree Cover (LTC) scenes (180 × 185 km each, 8 in the tropics and 3 in temperate forested areas) using tree cover as an indicator of habitat quality and in relation to edge distance. Second, we executed a temporal analysis of LTC in a smaller area in the Brazilian Amazon forest where one larger forest fragment (25,890 ha) became completely fragmented in 5 years. Our results show that for all 11 scenes pixel neighborhood variation of LTC is much higher in the vicinity of forest edges, becoming lower towards the forest interior. This analysis suggests a maximum distance for edge effects and can indicate the location of unaffected core areas. However, LTC patterns in relation to fragment edge distance vary according to the analyzed region, and maximum edge distance may differ according to local conditions. Our temporal analysis illustrates the change in tree cover patterns after 5 years of fragmentation, becoming on average lower close to the edge (between 50 and 100 m). Although it is still unclear which are the main causes of LTC edge variability within and between regions, LANDSAT Tree Cover could be used as an accessible and efficient discriminator of edge and interior forest habitats in fragmented landscapes, and become invaluable for deriving qualitative spatial and temporal information of ecological and ecosystem processes.  相似文献

Brassica species are increasingly being used as cover crops to suppress soil-borne diseases in potato cropping systems. Experiments were conducted in controlled environments and in the field to evaluate the effects of cover crop root or shoot or a combination of root and shoot tissues on potato root and tuber health. In a lab assay we examined the extent to which volatile compounds released from tissues of two cover crop species, rye (Cereale secale L.) and oriental mustard (Brassica juncea L.), could inhibit mycelium growth of two important potato diseases, Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium ultimum. Twenty-four hours into the lab assay, volatile compounds from all residues suppressed fungal growth. After 48 h, marked suppression of hyphal growth continued in the presence of mustard residues but not in the presence of rye tissues or the control without tissues. A 75 L volume container experiment evaluated the effect of incorporating different quantities of mustard shoot and root tissues (none, comparable to field level and fourfold field level) into R. solani and P. ultimum infested soil on potato growth, root health and tuber disease. In the container study, incorporating mustard shoots at the highest dose increased potato yield by 54% and reduced disease rating to 2.3 compared to a severe rating of 4.4 in the control. In the field trial, potato growth, root health and tuber disease levels were evaluated in plots where disease management involved either incorporation of mustard or rye cover crop roots, shoots and whole plants (roots plus shoots) or standard farmer practice of a fumigated fallow as a control. White root tissue was used as a health indicator, and averaged 58 and 78% in the fumigated control and mustard cover crop treatments, respectively. The highest healthy root tissue status (91%) was recorded where whole plants of mustard were incorporated. In contrast to the visual assessment of root and tuber health, tuber yield in the field was not influenced by cover crop treatment. Across experiments, the incorporation of or exposure to whole mustard plants was consistently effective at suppressing soil-borne fungi and promoting healthy roots and tubers, especially at higher rates of biomass. Mustard should be managed so as to maximize incorporated biomass for effective biofumigation. Multipurpose management requiring removal of mustard shoots is incompatible with promoting potato rhizosphere health.  相似文献

Improving understanding of the connections between vegetation, herbivory, and ecosystem function offers a fundamental challenge in contemporary terrestrial ecology. Using exclosures constructed during the late 1950s, we examined effects of grazing by wild and domestic herbivores on plant community structure, aboveground herbaceous primary production, and nutrient cycling at six sites in semi-arid, sagebrush rangelands during 2001-2002 in Colorado, USA. Enclosures provided three treatments: no grazing, grazing by wild ungulates only, and grazing by wild and domestic ungulates. Excluding all grazing caused an increase in shrub cover (F = 4.97, P = 0.033) and decrease in bare ground (F = 4.74, P = 0.037), but also a decrease in plant species richness (F = 6.19, P = 0.018) and plant diversity (F = 7.93, P = 0.008). Effects of wild ungulate grazing on plant cover and diversity were intermediate to the effects of combined domestic and wild grazing. Aboveground net primary production was higher in both grazed treatments than in the ungrazed one (F(wild + domestic) = 2.98, P = 0.0936 and F(wild only) = 3.55, P = 0.0684). We were unable to detect significant effects of grazing on other ecosystem states and processes including C:N ratios of standing crops, N mineralization potential, or nitrification potential. Best approximating models revealed positive correlation between N availability and herbaceous cover and a negative correlation between herbaceous primary production and the ratio of shrub-herb cover and plant diversity. We conclude that ungulate herbivory, including both wild and domestic ungulates, had significant effects on plant community structure and ecosystem function during this 42-year span. Responses to the wild ungulate treatment were consistently intermediate to responses to the no grazing and wild + domestic grazing treatments. However, we were unable to detect statistical difference between effects of wild ungulates alone and wild ungulates in combination with livestock.  相似文献
