The effect of granular coral limestone and Leca as adsorbents for removing Acid Cyanine 5R (AC5R) from aqueous solution was studied. The optimum pH and adsorbent particles size in both adsorbents were determined to be 3 and 297 μm, respectively. The optimum dosages of coral limestone and granular Leca were 0.150 and 0.145 g/mg of dye, respectively. Also, results have shown that the adsorption efficiency by both coral limestone and Leca increased with the decreasing adsorbent particles size. Moreover, under similar conditions, the maximum removal efficiency by granular coral limestone and Leca was 94% and 88%, respectively. The results revealed that the performance of granular coral limestone was better in AC5R removal than that of Leca granulated under such condition. In total, granular coral limestone and Leca act as suitable adsorbents for removing dye pollutants from an aqueous solution.  相似文献

Increases in reported incidence of ciguatera fish poisoning (hereafter ciguatera) have been linked to warmer sea temperatures that are known to trigger coral bleaching events. The drivers that trigger blooms of ciguatera-causing dinoflagellates on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) are poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of increased temperatures and lowered salinities, often associated with environmental disturbance events, on the population growth of two strains of the potentially ciguatera-causing dinoflagellate, Gambierdiscus carpenteri (NQAIF116 and NQAIF380). Both strains were isolated from the central GBR with NQAIF116 being an inshore strain and NQAIF380 an isolate from a stable environment of a large coral reef aquarium exhibit in ReefHQ, Townsville, Australia. Species of Gambierdiscus are often found as part of a mixed assemblage of benthic toxic dinoflagellates on macroalgal substrates. The effect of assemblage structure of dinoflagellates on the growth of Gambierdiscus populations has, however, not been explored. The study, therefore investigated the growth of G. carpenteri within mixed assemblages of benthic dinoflagellates. Population growth was monitored over a period of 28 days under three salinities (16, 26 and 36) and three temperature (24, 28 and 34 °C) conditions in a fully crossed experimental design. Temperature and salinity had a significant effect on population growth. Strain NQAIF380 exhibited significantly higher growth at 28 °C compared to strain NQAIF116, which had highest growth at 24 °C. When strain NQAIF116 was co-cultured with the benthic dinoflagellates, Prorocentrum lima and Ostreopsis sp., inhibitory effects on population growth were observed at a salinity of 36. In contrast, growth stimulation of G. carpenteri (strain NQAIF116) was observed at a salinity of 26 and particularly at 16 when co-cultured with Ostreopsis-dominated assemblages. Range expansion of ciguatera-causing dinoflagellates could lead to higher frequency of reported ciguatera illness in populated temperate Australian regions, outside the tropical range of the GBR. Therefore, the findings on salinity and temperature tolerance of two strains of G. carpenteri indicates potential adaptability to different local environmental conditions. These are baseline data for future investigations into the potential southward range expansion of ciguatera-causing dinoflagellates originating from the GBR.  相似文献

Skeletal eroding band (SEB), which manifests as dense aggregations of the ciliate Halofolliculina corallasia, was the first coral disease described from the Indo-Pacific. Little is known about its etiology or impact. This study describes the distribution, prevalence and host range of SEB on a 500 km extent of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), together with in situ rates of progression and infection following experimental injury. SEB occurred on 90–100% of reefs surveyed (n=18) in each of 3 years, demonstrating that SEB is widely distributed and persistent. SEB had the highest prevalence of any disease, affecting approximately 2% of 283,486 scleractinians and hydrocorals surveyed. Its host range was large, affecting 12 families and at least 82 scleractinian species, as well as the hydrocoral, Millepora. Corals in the families Pocilloporidae and Acroporidae were most susceptible, the former being up to five times more susceptible than other families. Progressive tissue loss was recorded on 95% of Acropora muricata colonies monitored (n = 18), with rates of SEB progression averaging ∼2 mm/day. Injury experiments demonstrated that H. corallasia, the putative pathogen of SEB, readily colonised recently exposed coral skeleton in the absence of a vector, but did not colonise intact coral tissue. Invading ciliates failed to form band-like aggregations associated with progressive tissue loss on any of three coral species tested experimentally, suggesting that, while H. corallasia readily colonises recently exposed coral skeleton, it may not be sufficient in itself to cause tissue mortality. Interactions with additional agents or factors, increasing ciliate virulence or lowering disease resistance of coral hosts may be required before halofolliculinid infections become associated with tissue loss.  相似文献

 Scleractinian coral reefs, when coexistent with siliciclastic sediments, usually occur in association with deltaic or coastal sands. Nevertheless, Pleistocene reef limestones in southwestern Taiwan are developed in association with thick claystones that were deposited in a deeper-water environment. These reef limestones are characterized by: (1) rapid transition from underlying claystones upward to reefal limestones, (2) lateral interfingering with open-shelf claystones, (3) being overlain by terrestrial deposits or exposed with no covering strata, and (4) being located in close association with anticlines. The authors propose that these reef limestones developed on anticlinal ridges raised above the adjacent sea floor by thrust-front migration in a foreland setting. Accepted: 21 April 1998  相似文献

 Recruitment of scleractinian corals on settlement plates at Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, was examined over four years (September 1991–September 1995) to quantify spatio-temporal patterns at different scales and to assess post settlement mortality. Recruitment was dominated by pocilloporid corals which accounted for 80.1% of the 8627 spat counted, whereas non-isoporan acroporids represented only 16.4%. Poritids, faviids and isoporan acroporids rarely recruited to the plates (3.5%), despite their obvious abundance as adults on the reef. Recruitment patterns on the plates indicate strong space-time interactions as evidenced by patchy recruitment of both pocilloporid and acroporid spat. Interactions were found between space (on the scale of 102 m, i.e. sites within zones, and 101 m, i.e. racks within sites) and time (on the scale of years) for pocilloporids and between space (on the scale of 103 m, i.e. zones, and 102 m) and time (on the scale of years) for acroporids. Post-recruitment mortality of acroporid spat in the period 3–10 months after their major spawning was dependent on their initial recruitment density, but pocilloporid mortality was either independent of initial recruitment density or, more likely, obscured by additional recruitment of pocilloporids to plates between late February and September. High rates of recruitment and growth by other sessile organisms, particularly bryozoans and oysters, appear to result in increased post-recruitment mortality and limit recruitment of scleractinian corals on settlement plates. The work reinforces an emerging picture that coral recruitment patterns are determined by mechanisms that manifest over a large range of spatial scales. Accepted: 1 September 1997  相似文献

The bioerosive potential of the intertidal chiton Acanthopleura gemmata on One Tree Reef was determined by quantification of CaCO3 in daily faecal pellet production of individuals transplanted into mesocosms after nocturnal-feeding forays. Mean bioerosive potential was estimated at 0.16 kg CaCO3 chiton−1 yr−1. Bioerosion rates were estimated for populations on two distinct chiton habitats, reef margin (0.013 kg CaCO3 m−2 yr−1) and beachrock platform (0.25 kg CaCO3 m−2 yr−1). Chiton density on the platform was orders of magnitude greater than on the reef margin. The surface-lowering rate (0.16 mm m−2 yr) due to bioerosion by the beachrock population is a substantial contribution to the total surface-lowering rate of 2 mm m−2 yr−1 previously reported for One Tree Reef across all erosive agents. At high densities, the contribution of A. gemmata to coral reef bioerosion budgets may be comparable to other important bioeroders such as echinoids and fish.  相似文献

The assemblage composition of cryptic mobile animals inhabiting coral rubble was sampled using mesh traps containing clean coral rubble, and used as indicators of land-based pollution at 14 sites in three coral lagoons at Ishigaki Island, southern Japan. Cluster analyses identified three groups of large mobile animal assemblages (molluscs, echinoderms, fishes, decapod and stomatopod crustaceans). Using a distance-based redundancy analysis (db-RDA) there was a significant relationship between the assemblage composition and environmental variables. The 1st axis of the db-RDA ordination was regarded as the land-based pollution gradient because of the strong relationship with silicate sediment, turbidity, and salinity, indicating effects of terrestrial-sediment runoff. Species response curves were derived from a plot of the number of individuals against the 1st axis of the db-RDA sites sample score. The response curves of Galathea mauritiana, an indicator species for the intermediate sites, were unimodal along the land-based pollution gradient. This study demonstrates the use of traps containing clean coral rubble for nondestructive quantitative sampling and environmental monitoring in coral lagoons, and their potential for monitoring changes in the reef environment. The accumulation and seasonal impact of riverine discharge on coral reefs of the Meso-American Region (MAR) were estimated using a numerical simulation of river runoff dispersion. River-reef connectivity, or source-sink dynamics of terrestrial runoff was further assessed from more than 400 watersheds of the region onto discrete coral reef areas. Using land use for 2003 and 2004 in the MAR, this work builds upon a Regional Ocean Modeling System simulation of the MAR validated by ocean color satellite data, and on the monthly river nutrient and sediment load and discharge provided by the World Resources Institute using the N-SPECT model. Analysis of the variability of simulated runoff transport to the reefs showed that reefs of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (MBRS) were mostly impacted from June to September, following the peak time of river discharge. At that time, the coastal and oceanic circulations contribute quickly to expel the runoff from the MBRS. High runoff concentration waters leaving the eastern coast of Honduras during the months of October to December return to the southwestern MAR in March as they are entrained in a cyclonic gyre. Coral reefs of the MAR are thus impacted twice, first from the coastal side with runoff of local origin and later from the oceanic side with runoff from mixed origin. High probability of connectivity between rivers and remote reefs is established as this study revealed that river runoff from the north shore of Honduras has a wide-spread impact on most of the coral reefs of southern Belize, while watersheds on the Gulf of Honduras are mostly connected to coral reefs in the northern shore of Honduras. Although the level of remote influence (or runoff concentration reaching the reef) is lower than the local, the cumulative effect of numerous remote river-reef connections remains significant.  A new method for attaching individual artificial settlement plates directly to the reef surface using small stainless steel base plates is described. Recruitment of corals to settlement plates attached to the reef substratum and to steel mesh racks is compared. The effects of differences in depth, settlement plate angle, and local topography on recruitment of corals were also investigated. No significant difference in mean recruit density was found between settlement plates deployed using the two attachment methods. Small differences in depth and plate angle among replicate plates explained less than 6% of the variability in coral recruitment on replicate settlement plates. The direct-attachment method is less obtrusive, more cost and time efficient, and settlement plates can be deployed at precise locations. Additionally, because settlement plates are deployed individually rather than grouped on racks or frames, the direct-attachment method avoids complications associated with assumptions of independence implicit in most statistical procedures.
