Phytoplankton biomass values in Tavropos Reservoir, ranging from 92 to 1071 mg m–3, are within a range characteristic of oligotrophic waters. The seasonal sequence of biomass shows three annual peaks, differing from the monoacmic pattern seen in oligotrophic lakes. This sequence was profoundly affected by changes in water withdrawal and inflow rates. Diatoms, cryptophytes, chrysophytes and dinoflagellates, in that order, were the major constituents of the reservoir phytoplankton. The succession, from diatoms and chrysophytes in late winter-spring, to centric diatoms in late spring-summer and again to diatom-chrysophytes in late autumn was similar to that in oligotrophic lakes.  相似文献

In the Chihuahuan Desert of the southwestern United States we monitored responses of both winter and summer annual plant communities to natural environmental variation and to experimental removal of seed-eating rodents and ants for 13 years. Analyses of data on population densities of the species by principal component analysis (PCA) followed by repeated measures analysis of variance (rmANOVA) on PCA scores showed that: (1) composition of both winter and summer annual communities varied substantially from year to year, presumably in response to interannual climatic variation, and (2) community composition of winter annuals was also significantly affected by the experimental manipulations of seed-eating animals, but the composition of the summer annual community showed no significant response to these experimental treatments. Canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) was then applied to the data for winter annuals to more clearly identify the responses to the different classes of experimental manipulations. This analysis showed that removing rodents or ants or both taxa caused distinctive changes in species composition. There was a tendency for large-seeded species to increase on rodent removal plots and to decrease on ant removal plots, and for small-seeded species to change in the opposite direction. In the winter annual community there was a significant time x treatment interaction: certain combinations of species that responded differently to removal of granivores also showed opposite fluctuations in response to long-term climatic variation. The large year-to-year variation in the summer annual community was closely and positively correlated across all experimental treatments. The use of multivariate analysis in conjunction with long-term monitoring and experimental manipulation shows how biotic interactions interact with variation in abiotic conditions to affect community dynamics.  相似文献

Seagrass meadows are important primary producers in SE-Asia coastal areas that are increasingly threatened by human activities resulting in a deterioration of the underwater light environment. The resilience of seagrass meadows to decreasing light availability should be approached in an integrative manner, because they shelter complex communities of primary and secondary producers. The aim of this study was to measure the in situ metabolism of a seagrass community under different levels of light availability following changes in the water column dissolved oxygen (DO) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), the sediment redox potential and seagrass production. Net community production (NCP) and respiration were measured along two diel cycles to produce a balance of NCP under different light treatments. On a daily basis, at full irradiance, the community metabolism presented a net production which was close to zero, with values of −7.75 to 16.6 mmol O2 m−2 day−1 for DO, and −56.8 to 22.7 mmol C m−2 day−1 for DIC in the first and second incubation runs, respectively. Compensation irradiance for the NCP was thus found to be close to 80% of the present light availability. Shading resulted in a general decrease in the sediment redox potential, while the initial redox potential had not recovered 6 days after exposure to full sunlight. This community appears to be in a fragile equilibrium with the environment, and any minor decrease in the water transparency would lead to a shift from an autotrophic to a heterotrophic system.  相似文献

Although sexuality is considered evolutionarily progressive, clonality is very common in plants and the prevailing means of reproduction in several community types. I discuss what could be the forces that have influenced the selection among sexual versus non-sexual reproduction at community level. I propose that, among others, the probability of self-competition must have been one of the key factors. The probability of meeting one’s own genes for wasteful competition is higher in communities where clonality prevails (and relatively high mean intra-species relatedness is expected), and higher in communities with low species diversity. On the other hand, lower diversity indicates a higher average fitness of species since the (finite) total pool of resources is distributed among fewer population with high density. I show, using four community types with contrasting diversity and clonality that community fitness (average fitness in the assemblage of species) can be expressed as the product of two variables––anti-diversity and degree of sexuality.  相似文献

Plots of fresh pulverized fuel ash (PFA, an industrial waste) were inoculated with soils from existing PFA sites and fertilizers in a factorial design, then left unmanaged for 12 years during which time the floral development and soil chemistry were monitored annually. For the first 3 years, the site supported a sparse mix of chenopods (including the scarce Chenopodium glaucum ) and halophytes. As salinity declined, ruderals, legumes, and grasses plus the fire-site moss Funaria hygrometrica colonized, followed by Festuca arundinacea grassland (NVC community MG12) and Hippophae rhamnoides scrub. Dactylorhiza incarnata (orchidacea) appeared after 7 years, but only in plots that had received soil from existing orchid colonies. Four years later, a larger second generation of Dactylorhiza appeared, but only in the central zone of the site where vegetation was thinnest. By year 12, the site was dominated by coarse grasses and scrub, with early successional species persisting only in the sparsely vegetated center, where nitrate levels were lowest. This edge effect is interpreted as centripetal encroachment, a process of potentially wider concern for the conservation of low-fertility habitat patches. Overall, seed bank inoculation seems to have introduced few but desirable species ( D. incarnata , Pyrola rotundifolia , some halophytes, and annuals), whereas initial application of organic fertilizer had long-lasting (≥10 years) effects on cover and soil composition.  相似文献

Seasonality in Southern Hemisphere freshwater phytoplankton assemblages   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
P. J. Ashton 《Hydrobiologia》1985,125(1):179-190
Seasonal climatic cycles induce corresponding fluctuations in phytoplankton abundance and productivity at all latitudes, the magnitude of these fluctuations tending to increase with distance from the Equator. In equatorial regions seasonality is dependent on prevailing wind and rainfall patterns while annual temperature fluctuations exert increasing control over seasonal events at higher latitudes. The small annual temperature range of equatorial aquatic systems increases their sensitivity to localized climatic events which can bring about diel changes that exceed normal month-to-month variations. Long-term hydrological cycles with a periodicity greater than one year can also cause dramatic changes in equatorial and tropical aquatic systems leading to greater unpredictability. The factors regulating seasonal patterns of phytoplankton abundance and species composition in equatorial and low-latitude temperate regions of the Southern Hemisphere are examined and compared with similar features in the Northern Hemisphere. Despite the striking diversity of phytoplankton populations and the wide variety of habitats they occupy, seasonal succession follows a common sequence controlled, successively, by physical, chemical and biotic factors. This permits a high degree of predictability in the environmental conditions promoting growth of different taxa.Examination of Southern Hemisphere data indicates that, at class level, phytoplankton successional sequences in Southern Hemisphere aquatic systems are in agreement with the successional paradigm formulated for northern tropical and temperate latitudes. Diatoms characterize early successional episodes and these are followed by chlorophytes, and finally blue-green algae. Extreme habitat modification (e.g. hypertrophy, salinity) tends to lead to dominance of the habitat by a single taxon, often represented by a single species. Predictions of within-taxon species succession in phytoplankton assemblages are far less precise.  相似文献

A cadaver represents a temporal energy‐loaded resource, which provides arthropods with food, protection and a place in which to find a mate. Insects are usually the first organisms to discover and colonize a cadaver; as decomposition progresses, insects colonize cadavers in a predictable sequence. This work aimed to establish cadaverous entomofauna relationships with regard to stages of decomposition and environmental conditions using multiple correspondence analysis and thereby to identify the way in which insects distribute a perishable and changing resource. Entomofauna were thus collected in a semi‐rural area near Bogotá from the cadavers of three pigs (Sus scrofa L.) which had been shot. Environmental variables were recorded for each sampling. Multiple correspondence analyses were carried out for adult forms belonging to Diptera and Coleoptera families and stages of decomposition, and for Diptera and Coleoptera adult forms and environmental conditions. Stages of decomposition were a primary determining factor for structuring four guilds of entomofauna. However, environmental conditions influenced insect activity and were therefore a relevant factor in the structure of the entomofauna community. The results showed that the insects' distribution of available resources was related to changes in the stage of decomposition.  相似文献
