Capsule?House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) populations in south Swedish farmland are not affected by supplemental winter feeding, irrespective of agricultural landscape type or presence of animal husbandry, although winter populations declined more in mixed farmland and when farms contained animal husbandry.

Aims?To investigate whether food limitation of House Sparrow population size during the winter varied spatially in relation to agricultural landscape intensification and farm management.

Methods?We experimentally increased the winter food supply for populations on farmsteads in replicated landscapes that differed in agricultural intensification (open plains versus mixed farming) and/or farm management (crop farming versus animal husbandry), and estimated possible differences in effects on winter population change.

Results?We found no effect of supplementary winter feeding on changes in House Sparrow population sizes over the winter, irrespective of agricultural landscape type or presence of animal husbandry at the farm. However, we found a significantly larger winter population decline in mixed farmland and when farms contained animal husbandry.

Conclusions?The results suggest that House Sparrow populations in south Swedish farmland are not primarily limited by winter food availability. Alternatively, supplemental winter feeding may augment interspecific competition or attracts predators, offsetting any positive effect on population change. However, the stronger population decline in landscapes in which more breeding resources may be available (animal husbandry farms, mixed farmland), suggests stronger intraspecific competition during the winter in line with the resource separation hypothesis.  相似文献

Capsule Woodland birds were significantly less likely to occur in gardens in years of high beechmast crop.

Aim To test the hypothesis that woodland species that feed on beechmast will have significantly lower occurrence rates at garden feeders in mast years.

Methods Weekly winter occurrence rates at garden feeders between 1970/71 and 1999/2000 for 40 species were analysed in relation to annual beechmast abundance, classified into low, medium and high years. A repeated-measures logistic regression model was used to assess whether beechmast abundance explained further significant variation additional to underlying seasonal and annual trends.

Results Seven species that commonly feed on beechmast showed significantly lower occurrence in gardens in years of highest beechmast abundance: Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos major, Woodpigeon Columba palumbus, Great Tit Parus major, Coal Tit Periparus ater, Nuthatch Sitta europaea, Jay Garrulus glandarius and Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs. Blackbird Turdus merula and Siskin Carduelis spinus, which showed similar significant patterns, are likely to take beechmast as elements of their diet. Pied Wagtail Motacilla alba was the only insectivorous species to show significant effects, but occurrence was lowest in years of intermediate beechmast abundance. For the latter species, this may have been due to confounding effects of temperature, but there were no such confounding effects of either temperature, or the number of bird feeders provided in gardens, for the other nine species.

Conclusion Use of artificial food sources by birds in gardens is influenced by resources in the surrounding countryside, suggesting that food provided in gardens may play a significant part in the population dynamics of these species, that population monitoring without consideration of the garden habitat may be deficient, and that volunteer-based garden bird recording may provide data that can be used as an indicator of changes in the wider countryside.  相似文献

Sexual selection has been hypothesized to promote speciation, but evidence relating sexual selection to differences in speciation rates among taxa is equivocal. We note that evolutionary changes in ornaments are the link connecting sexual selection to speciation, and that ornament evolution is influenced by many factors so that its relationship with the strength of sexual selection may not be linear. We test if the evolution of ornamental coloration in Carduelis finches is related with speciation and if more ornamented lineages speciate more. We found that coloration evolves with a speciational pattern, but we found no evidence that the evolutionary changes associated with speciation are predominantly gains in ornamentation. The speciational pattern was found for both carotenoid- and melanin-based coloration, suggesting that traits putatively under stronger sexual selection by female choice (carotenoid coloration) are not the sole ones facilitating reproductive isolation. We conclude that in the genus Carduelis the evolutionary lability of ornaments influences speciation more than the strength of sexual selection, and we suggest that ornament lability should be considered as a possible causal factor in studies comparing cladogenesis among taxa.  相似文献

向非鸣禽家鸽(Columba livia domesticus)和鸣禽黄雀(Carduelis spinus)、黄喉鹀(Emberiza, elegans)耳蜗内注射 HRP作顺行追踪表明,耳蜗纤维组成第八脑神经的听支( N Ⅷ)后,分别投射至延髓的角状核(NA)和巨细胞核(NM),由 NA及 NM两个亚核组成耳蜗核(nucleus cochlea),它是听觉的上行通路中的第一级中继站,延髓层状核并不接受耳蜗纤维的直接投射。家鸽与黄雀、黄喉鹀之间的NA、NM及NⅧ在形态和分布上都有较明显的差别。  相似文献

Carotenoid pigments can directly enhance the immune responsesof vertebrates, and they are used by many animals to createornamental color displays. It has been hypothesized that thesetwo functions of carotenoid pigments are linked: animals musttrade off use of carotenoid pigments for immune function versusornamental display. We tested two key predictions of this hypothesiswith captive American goldfinches, Carduelis tristis, a specieswith extensive carotenoid-based plumage coloration. First, wetested whether the immune systems of male goldfinches are carotenoidlimited during molt by supplying treatment groups with low,approximately normal, or high dietary access to lutein and zeaxanthin.Dietary treatment had a significant effect on plumage and billcolor but not on immunocompetence. We compared the cell-mediatedand humoral immune responses and the course of disease afterinfection for males in the different treatments. We observedno significant effect of the carotenoid content of diet on immuneresponse or disease resistance. Second, we tested whether therewas a positive relationship between immune function and expressionof ornamental coloration by comparing both the pre- and posttreatmentplumage coloration of males to their immune responses. We failedto find the predicted trade-off between ornament display andimmune function. These findings do not support the hypothesisthat songbirds with extensive carotenoid-based plumage displaystrade off the use of carotenoids for ornamentation versus immunefunction.  相似文献
