An echolocating bat produces echoes consisting of the convolution of echolocation call and the impulse response (IR) of the ensonified object. A crucial question in animal sonar is whether bats are able to extract this IR from the echo. The bat inner ear generates a frequency representation of call and echo and IR extraction in the frequency domain requires accurate analysis of both magnitude and phase information. Previous studies investigating the phase sensitivity of bats using a jitter paradigm reported a temporal acuity down to 10 ns, suggesting perfect sonar phase representation. In a phantom-target playback experiment, we investigate the perceptual phase sensitivity of the bat Phyllostomus discolor using a novel approach: instead of manipulating IR phase by changing IR delay (jitter paradigm), we randomized IR phase and thus lengthened the IR over time, leaving the magnitude spectrum unchanged. Our results show that phase sensitivity, as reflected in the analysis of signal duration, appears to be much lower than phase sensitivity, as reflected in the analysis of signal onset. The current data indicate that different temporal aspects of sonar processing are encoded with very different temporal resolution and thus an overall claim of “phase sensitivity” as such cannot be maintained.  相似文献

许多动物的叫声频率呈现性二态现象。蝙蝠夜间活动,主要利用声音信号导航空间、追踪猎物、传递交流信息。本研究选择成体菲菊头蝠作为研究对象,检验回声定位声波频率性二态是否有利于性别识别。研究发现,菲菊头蝠回声定位声波频率参数具有显著性别差异。播放白噪音、雄性回声定位声波及雌性回声定位声波期间,实验个体的反应叫声数量依次递减。播放白噪音、雌性回声定位声波及雄性回声定位声波后,实验个体的反应叫声数量依次递增。白噪音诱导反应叫声强度高于回声定位声波诱导反应叫声强度。研究结果表明,菲菊头蝠回声定位声波的频率参数编码发声者性别信息,有利于种群内部的性别识别。本研究暗示,回声定位声波可能在蝙蝠配偶选择中扮演一定作用。  相似文献

江西武夷山发现亚洲宽耳蝠   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
本研究组于2018年1月在江西省武夷山自然保护区,使用蝙蝠竖琴网捕获到1只雄性蝙蝠,采用传统形态分类并结合系统发育学分析方法,对该蝙蝠进行物种鉴定。其主要特征为:体型中等偏小,前臂长38.29mm;外耳廓呈方形,双耳在额部相连,耳屏呈现三角形,无耳突;背毛和腹毛黑棕色且毛尖偏白色;头骨从吻端均匀上升,颅顶点隆起不明显,整体较为扁平;颧弓纤细,矢状嵴与人字嵴隐约可见,齿式为2.1.2.3/3.1.2.3=34。根据其外部形态、头骨特征及基于Cytb和ND1基因序列的系统发育树结果,将该蝙蝠鉴定为亚洲宽耳蝠(Barbastella leucomelas),为中国江西省翼手目分布新记录种。  相似文献

笔者于1997年对中华山蝠(Nyctalus velutinus)牙齿的脱换模式进行了研究。共观察幼蝠200只次。中华山蝠初生仔共有22枚乳齿,齿式为2.1.2.0/3.1.2.0,各乳齿略向舌侧倾斜,除乳前臼齿齿冠不分叉外,其余乳齿齿冠均分为三叶。4d龄开始换齿,31d龄左右脱换完毕。乳齿的脱落顺序是:上颌,PM2→PM1→C1→I1→I2;下颌,I1→PM2.I2→I3→PM1→C1;恒齿萌生的顺序为:上颌,M1→PM2.C1→M2→PM1.M3→I1→I2,下颌,M1→I1.PM2→I2.M2→I3.PM1→C1→M3。  相似文献

Aim A global meta‐analysis was used to elucidate a mechanistic understanding of elevational species richness patterns of bats by examining both regional and local climatic factors, spatial constraints, sampling and interpolation. Based on these results, I propose the first climatic model for elevational gradients in species richness, and test it using preliminary bat data for two previously unexamined mountains. Location Global data set of bat species richness along elevational gradients from Old and New World mountains spanning 12.5° S to 38° N latitude. Methods Bat elevational studies were found through an extensive literature search. Use was made only of studies sampling  70% of the elevational gradient without significant sampling biases or strong anthropogenic disturbance. Undersampling and interpolation were explicitly examined with three levels of error analyses. The influence of spatial constraints was tested with a Monte Carlo simulation program, Mid‐Domain Null. Preliminary bat species richness data sets for two test mountains were compiled from specimen records from 12 US museum collections. Results Equal support was found for decreasing species richness with elevation and mid‐elevation peaks. Patterns were robust to substantial amounts of error, and did not appear to be a consequence of spatial constraints. Bat elevational richness patterns were related to local climatic gradients. Species richness was highest where both temperature and water availability were high, and declined as temperature and water availability decreased. Mid‐elevational peaks occurred on mountains with dry, arid bases, and decreasing species richness occurred on mountains with wet, warm bases. A preliminary analysis of bat richness patterns on elevational gradients in western Peru (dry base) and the Olympic Mountains, WA (wet base), supported the predictions of the climate model. Main conclusions The relationship between species richness and combined temperature and water availability may be due to both direct (thermoregulatory constraints) and indirect (food resources) factors. Abundance was positively correlated with species richness, suggesting that bat species richness may also be related to productivity. The climatic model may be applicable to other taxonomic groups with similar ecological constraints, for instance certain bird, insect and amphibian clades.  相似文献

Big brown bats can discriminate between echoes that alternate in delay (jitter) by as little as 10–15 ns and echoes that are stationary in delay. This delay hyperacuity seems so extreme that it has been rejected in favor of an explanation in terms of artifacts in echoes, most likely spectral in nature, that presumably are correlated with delay. Using different combinations of digital, analog, and cable delays, we dissociated the overall delay of jittering echoes from the size of the analog component of delay, which alone is presumed to determine the strength of the apparatus artifact. The bats' performance remains invariant with respect to the overall delay of the jittering echoes, not with respect to the amount of analog delay. This result is not consistent with the possible use of delay-related artifacts produced by the analog delay devices. Moreover, both electronic and acoustic measurements disclose no spectral cues or impedance-mismatch reflections in delayed signals, just time-delays. The absence of artifacts from the apparatus and the failure of overlap and interference from reverberation to account for the 10-ns result means that closing the gap between the level of temporal accuracy plausibly explained from physiology and the level observed in behavior may require a better understanding of the physiology.Abbreviations FM frequency-modulated - XCR cross-correlation function  相似文献

We estimate fluctuations in population size and sex ratio, documentbreeding behavior and reproduction, and determine the diet of a population ofthe lesser long-nosed bat, Leptonycteris curasoae, in anisland cave in Chamela Bay, Jalisco, Mexico, with monthly sampling during anannual cycle (October 1999–October 2000). Based on the area of thecave's ceiling and wall covered with L. curasoae inrelation to the potential roost area without them, in 1999 the abundanceincreased from 80% in October to 100% in November and December. In 2000 thepopulation decreased to 80% in January, 50% in February, 30% in March, 20% inApril, 10% in May, 5% in June and July, and less than 1% in August. Thepopulation rapidly increased to 60% in September and to 80% in October.Throughout the year there were significantly more males than females; however,there was significant heterogeneity over months. In September–Novemberthere were more females, but in December–August there were more malespresent. The majority of pregnant and lactating females were observed fromDecember to March and in July, while males were reproductive fromSeptember–January and in May–June. Breeding activity was observed inthe cave in November–December. Twenty-six species of plants were consumedduring the year, based on pollen identification from fecal samples. Bombacaceousspecies were the most important component of the diet from January to May andCactaceae were most important in June–September. Peak abundance and reproductive activitycoincided with peak flower resource availability, which occurred between Octoberand January and in June–July. The year-round presence and reproductiveactivity of L. curasoae at this site throughout the yeardemonstrate that many individuals are annual residents in this area and indicatethe importance of this roosting site. In order to develop a successfulconservation program for L. curasoae, in addition toprotecting migratory corridors and northern maternity roosts, it is equallyimportant to identify and protect areas that function as breeding colonies andyear-round sanctuaries for resident populations in the south.  相似文献

Fire is a fundamental process in savannas and is widely used for management. Pyrodiversity, variation in local fire characteristics, has been proposed as a driver of biodiversity although empirical evidence is equivocal. Using a new measure of pyrodiversity (Hempson et al.), we undertook the first continent‐wide assessment of how pyrodiversity affects biodiversity in protected areas across African savannas. The influence of pyrodiversity on bird and mammal species richness varied with rainfall: strongest support for a positive effect occurred in wet savannas (> 650 mm/year), where species richness increased by 27% for mammals and 40% for birds in the most pyrodiverse regions. Range‐restricted birds were most increased by pyrodiversity, suggesting the diversity of fire regimes increases the availability of rare niches. Our findings are significant because they explain the conflicting results found in previous studies of savannas. We argue that managing savanna landscapes to increase pyrodiversity is especially important in wet savannas.  相似文献
