The purposes were twofold: (a) to ascertain the inter-session reliability of hamstrings total reaction time, pre-motor time and motor time; and (b) to examine sex-related differences in the hamstrings reaction times profile. Twenty-four men and 24 women completed the study. Biceps femoris and semitendinosus total reaction time, pre-motor time and motor time measured during eccentric isokinetic contractions were recorded on three different occasions. Inter-session reliability was examined through typical percentage error (CVTE), percentage change in the mean (CM) and intraclass correlations (ICC). For both biceps femoris and semitendinosus, total reaction time, pre-motor time and motor time measures demonstrated moderate inter-session reliability (CVTE < 10%; CM < 3%; ICC > 0.7). The results also indicated that, although not statistically significant, women reported consistently longer hamstrings total reaction time (23.5 ms), pre-motor time (12.7 ms) and motor time (7.5 ms) values than men. Therefore, an observed change larger than 5%, 9% and 8% for total reaction time, pre-motor time and motor time respectively from baseline scores after performing a training program would indicate that a real change was likely. Furthermore, while not statistically significant, sex differences were noted in the hamstrings reaction time profile which may play a role in the greater incidence of ACL injuries in women.  相似文献

Volatile chemicals in the environment provide ethologically important information to many animals. However, how animals learn to use this information is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights recent experimental advances elucidating olfactory learning in rodents, ranging from adaptations to the environment to task-dependent refinement and multisensory associations. Summary The pars distalis of the anterior pituitary is known to be regulated by hypothalamic hormones. Recently, we have discovered the presence of substance P-like immunoreactive nerve fibers in the pars distalis of the monkeys. Substance P-like immunoreactivity in the pars distalis of the dog was investigated in this study. A substantial amount of substance P-like immunoreactive nerve fibers with a large amount of varicosities were found. They were widely distributed in the gland, more abundant along its periphery. Most of them were closely related to the glandular tissue, some were located on vascular walls. Substance P-like immunoreactive nerve fibers were also found in the meningeal sheath of the anterior pituitary. They could be followed into the parenchyma of the gland.  相似文献

Understanding the regional hydroclimatic variability beyond the instrumental period is essential to contextualize the current climatic period within a longer record. Dendrochronology has been used as a powerful tool for estimating the temperature and precipitation variability of the last centuries on an annual and even seasonal scale. However, most of the centenary trees in Spain are located in high-elevation mountain environments, so the reconstructed signal is not representative of the climate variability of the lowlands, where the main cities and most of the population and human activities are located. Here we present a precipitation reconstruction of the Bardenas Natural Park, a semi-arid environment within the Ebro Valley, based on 61 new tree-ring width series of Pinus halepensis Mill. The new chronology, calibrated against high-resolution instrumental precipitation data, uncovers a high and robust relationship with the annual precipitation (from previous June to current May) (1951−2012 CE; r = 0.78;), representing the precipitation totals of the hydrological year. Our reconstruction explains 61 % of the annual precipitation for the period 1951−2012 and is representative of the lowlands of the Northeast of Spain. We identified 12 extremely dry and 11 extremely wet years, finding the first half of the 20th century to be the period with most extreme episodes of the reconstruction. Additionally, we found a strong agreement between our tree-ring based reconstruction and the lowlands documentary-based drought estimators (rogation ceremonies). These findings contribute to improving our understanding of past hydroclimatic variability in semi-arid lowland areas where available proxy records are rare.  相似文献

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different image reconstruction algorithms on topographic characteristics and diagnostic performance of the Parkinson’s disease related pattern (PDRP).MethodsFDG-PET brain scans of 20 Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients and 20 normal controls (NC) were reconstructed with six different algorithms in order to derive six versions of PDRP. Additional scans of 20 PD, 25 atypical parkinsonism (AP) patients and 20 NC subjects were used for validation. PDRP versions were compared by assessing differences in topographies, individual subject scores and correlations with patient’s clinical ratings. Discrimination of PD from NC and AP subjects was evaluated across cohorts.ResultsThe region weights of the six PDRPs highly correlated (R ≥ 0.991; p < 0.0001). All PDRPs’ expressions were significantly elevated in PD relative to NC and AP subjects (p < 0.0001) and correlated with clinical ratings (R ≥ 0.47; p < 0.05). Subject scores of the six PDRPs highly correlated within each of individual healthy and parkinsonian groups (R ≥ 0.972, p < 0.0001) and were consistent across the algorithms when using the same reconstruction methods in PDRP derivation and validation. However, when derivation and validation reconstruction algorithms differed, subject scores were notably lower compared to the reference PDRP, in all subject groups.ConclusionPDRP proves to be highly reproducible across FDG-PET image reconstruction algorithms in topography, ability to differentiate PD from NC and AP subjects and clinical correlation. When calculating PDRP scores in scans that have different reconstruction algorithms and imaging systems from those used for PDRP derivation, a calibration with NC subjects is advisable.  相似文献

Ligaments undergo finite strain displaying hyperelastic behaviour as the initially tangled fibrils present straighten out, combined with viscoelastic behaviour (strain rate sensitivity). In the present study the anterior cruciate ligament of the human knee joint is modelled in three dimensions to gain an understanding of the stress distribution over the ligament due to motion imposed on the ends, determined from experimental studies. A three dimensional, finite strain material model of ligaments has recently been proposed by Pioletti in Ref. [2]. It is attractive as it separates out elastic stress from that due to the present strain rate and that due to the past history of deformation. However, it treats the ligament as isotropic and incompressible. While the second assumption is reasonable, the first is clearly untrue. In the present study an alternative model of the elastic behaviour due to Bonet and Burton (Ref. [4]) is generalized. Bonet and Burton consider finite strain with constant modulii for the fibres and for the matrix of a transversely isotropic composite. In the present work, the fibre modulus is first made to increase exponentially from zero with an invariant that provides a measure of the stretch in the fibre direction. At 12% strain in the fibre direction, a new reference state is then adopted, after which the material modulus is made constant, as in Bonet and Burton's model. The strain rate dependence can be added, either using Pioletti's isotropic approximation, or by making the effect depend on the strain rate in the fibre direction only.

A solid model of a ligament is constructed, based on experimentally measured sections, and the deformation predicted using explicit integration in time. This approach simplifies the coding of the material model, but has a limitation due to the detrimental effect on stability of integration of the substantial damping implied by the nonlinear dependence of stress on strain rate. At present, an artificially high density is being used to provide stability, while the dynamics are being removed from the solution using artificial viscosity. The result is a quasi-static solution incorporating the effect of strain rate. Alternate approaches to material modelling and integration are discussed, that may result in a better model.  相似文献

Abstract

The success rate of reconstructing the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) with prosthetic ligaments is currently low both in humans and animals. The stress distribution in prosthetic ligaments that causes failure is very complex and not yet understood. Therefore, we have begun to develop a Finite Element Model of a prosthetic ACL. Here we describe the normal and contact stresses in DacronTM yarn (a multi-fibrillar structure) using input data based on experimental measurements of the load and strain of six designed yarns.

The results show that the normal and contact stresses in the fibres of the ACL yarn are directly proportional to the yam strains. Increasing the twisting length (transverse deformation) of the yarn increases the normal stress in the fibres and the yarn modulus, but decreases the contact stresses between the fibres. The structural properties of a yarn are dependent on the specific arrangement of various filament types. Increasing the distance between the longitudinal (symmetry) axes of the filaments and the axis of symmetry of the yarn decreases the stresses.  相似文献

Summary Developmental changes of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)-immunoreactive structures in the brain of mallard embryos were studied by means of immunocytochemistry (PAP technique). The primary antibody was generated against synthetic TRH. Immunoreactive neurons were first detected in the hypothalamus of 14-day-old embryos. By day 20, increasing numbers of immunoreactive perikarya were observed in the paraventricular nucleus, anterior preoptic region and supraoptic region. Immunoreactive fiber projections were seen in the median eminence as early as embryonic day 20; they occurred also in some extrahypothalamic regions (lateral septum, accumbens nucleus). The number and staining intensity of the cell bodies increased up to hatching, and continued to increase during the first week after hatching.  相似文献

The human major vault protein (MVP) has been implicated in the development of drug resistance in cancer cells. Over expression of MVP has also been reported in brain tissue samples from antiepileptic drug (AED)-resistant human focal epilepsies. To investigate the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) involving the MVP gene and AED-resistance, we compared the distribution of three SNPs in the MVP gene, rs4788187, rs3815824 and rs3815823, among 220 patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS) (prototype of AED-resistant epilepsy syndrome), 201 patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) (prototype of AED-responsive epilepsy syndrome) and 213 ethnically matched non-epilepsy controls. All the patients and controls were residents of the South Indian state of Kerala for more than three generations. We did not find any significant difference in allele and genotypic frequencies of the studied SNPs between AED-resistant and AED-responsive cohorts, and between AED-resistant and AED-responsive cohorts independently and pooled together when compared with the controls. We conclude that rs4788187, rs3815824, rs3815823 variants of the MVP gene are associated neither with predisposition for epilepsy nor with AED-resistance in the population that we have studied. Our results suggest the need for further research into the link between MVP and AED-resistance.  相似文献
