Objective: Studies on weight change and mortality have yielded inconclusive results. This 10‐year prospective study was undertaken to improve understanding of factors affecting weight change. Research Methods and Procedures: The subjects were 1143 men, aged 36 to 88 years (mean, 53.3 years) at entry. A questionnaire was filled in at entry and at the end of the follow‐up with queries on weight, height, weight at the age of 20, physician‐diagnosed diseases, smoking, alcohol use, dietary habits, leisure physical activity, occupation, present occupational activity, living conditions (living alone or cohabiting), and former athletic status. Further information on morbidity was obtained from selected national registers. Factors predicting weight change during the study were identified by stepwise linear multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean 10‐year weight change was 0.8 (range, ?29 to +24) kg. Age at entry (β‐coefficient, ?0.17, SE 0.02), weight at entry (β, ?0.03, SE 0.01), diabetes at entry (β, ?3.55, SE 1.02), diabetes diagnosed after entry (β, ?3.94, SE 0.96), malignant cancer (β, ?1.60, SE 0.70), being a smoker (β, ?1.59, SE 0.48), and increased physical activity (β, ?1.27, SE 0.54) were significantly (p < 0.05) associated with weight loss in the final model. The model explained 13% of the variance of weight change. Discussion: The results emphasize the complexity of weight change. Some factors associated with weight change are apparently negatively, and some positively, associated with health. This could explain the equivocal findings on weight change and mortality in the literature.  相似文献

The temporal variation of stoichiometry between consumed oxygen and oxidized carbon was investigated for the aerobic mineralization of leachates from aquatic macrophytes. Seven species of aquatic plants, viz. Cabomba piauhyensis, Cyperus giganteus, Egeria najas, Eichhornia azurea, Salvinia auriculata, Scirpus cubensisand Utricularia breviscapa, were collected from Òleo lagoon located in the floodplain of Mogi-Guacu river (São Paulo State, Brazil). After being collected, the plants were washed, oven-dried and triturated. In order to obtain the leachate, the fragments were submitted to an aqueous extraction (cold). Mineralization chambers were incubated at 20 °C containing leachates dissolved in water samples from Òleo lagoon to a final concentration of ca. 200 mg l–1on carbon basis. The chambers were maintained under aerobic conditions; the concentrations of the organic carbon (particulate and dissolved) and the dissolved oxygen were measured during approximately 80 days. Elemental analysis of the detritus and the concentrations of the remaining material (DOC and POC) were used to determine the amounts of mineralized organic carbon. The data were analyzed with first-order kinetics models, from which the daily rates of consumption (carbon and oxygen) and the stoichiometry (O/C) were determined. In the early phase of mineralization the O/C rates increased before reaching a maximum, after which they tended to decrease. For the mineralization of leachates from C. giganteus, S. auriculata and U. breviscapa, the decrease was relatively slow. For all substrata the initial values were smaller than 1, and ranged from 0.42 (S. cubensis) to 0.81 (C. piauhyensis). The maximum values were within the range from 0.58 (U. breviscapa) to 23.1 (E. najas) and at their highest 26th (C. piauhyensis) and 106th (C. giganteus) days. These variations are believed to be associated with the chemical composition of the leachates, with their transformations and alterations of metabolic pathways involved in the mineralization.  相似文献

目的 旨在通过对我院岗前培训8年经验的总结,摸索出一套在医院文化背景下的岗前培训体系。方法 采用问卷方法对2007—2009年新员工岗前培训效果进行匿名调查,并使用Excel进行数据录入和统计。结果 调查对象中76.63%的员工对师资配置情况及课程设置情况表示满意,54.08%的员工对培训时间与进度表示很合适,69.47%的员工对培训保障措施表示满意,69.42%和80.08%的员工分别对授课形式和培训受益情况表示满意。结论 医院文化及人文医学培训是医院人力资源处岗前培训的核心内容,这对每个从医人员树立正确的职业价值观具有指导作用和现实意义。岗前培训中培训师的授课技巧、专业知识及能力有待进一步提高,今后应不断完善内部培训师的培养途径与方法。  相似文献

Light and dark phase training may influences rodents’ physiologic parameters because these animals have nocturnal habits. Thus, we verify the effects of the training in different photoperiods on metabolism and corporal composition of rats. Eighteen rats were divided into three groups – G1: non-trained; G2: trained in the light phase; G3: trained in the dark phase. Rats were allowed to swim for 60 min, five times per week during six weeks. Trained animals presented a smaller weight gain and fat percentage in carcass. Rats of G3 increased gastrocnemius relative weight. The adipocyte diameter of G3 rats was smaller than the other groups. The levels of the total cholesterol, low-density proteins, and triacylglycerols were decreased in animals of G2 while the glycemia was increased. Training in light phase provided more alterations in the blood biochemical profile while the training in the dark increased the gastrocnemius weight and decreased the diameter of the adipocyte.  相似文献

This study analysed the changes in the electromyographic activity (EMG) of the vastus lateralis muscle (VL) during an incremental maximal oxygen uptake test on a treadmill. A breakpoint in the integrated electromyogram (iEMG)-velocity relationship has already been interpreted in two ways: either as a sign of neuromuscular fatigue or as an expression of the iEMG-velocity relationship characteristics. The aim of this study was to test a method of distinguishing fatigue effects from those due to increases in exercise power. Eight well-trained male runners took part in the study. They completed a running protocol consisting of 4-min stages of increments in power output. Between each stage (about 15 s after the start of a minute at rest), the subjects had to maintain a standard effort: a 10-s isometric leg extension contraction [50% isometric maximal voluntary contraction (IMVC)]. The EMG was recorded during the running and isometric protocols, a change in the EMG signal during the isometric exercise being considered as the sign of fatigue. The iEMG-velocity relationships were strongly fitted by a second-order polynomial function for data taken at both the start (r = 0.98) and the end (r = 0.98) of the stage. Based on the stability of the 50%IMVC-iEMG relationship noted between stages, the start-iEMG has been identified as expressing the iEMG-velocity relationship without fatigue. The stage after which end-iEMG increased significantly more steeply than start-iEMG was considered as the iEMG threshold and was simultaneous with the ventilatory equivalent for carbon dioxide threshold. The parallel changes of minute ventilation and iEMG would suggest the existence of common regulation stimuli linked either to effort intensity and/or to metabolic conditions. Organismal performance directly depends on an individual''s ability to cope with a wide array of physiological challenges. For social animals, social isolation is a stressor that has been shown to increase oxidative stress. Another physiological challenge, routine locomotor activity, has been found to decrease oxidative stress levels. Because we currently do not have a good understanding of how diverse physiological systems like stress and locomotion interact to affect oxidative balance, we studied this interaction in the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster). Voles were either pair housed or isolated and within the isolation group, voles either had access to a moving wheel or a stationary wheel. We found that chronic periodic isolation caused increased levels of oxidative stress. However, within the vole group that was able to run voluntarily, longer durations of locomotor activity were associated with less oxidative stress. Our work suggests that individuals who demonstrate increased locomotor activity may be better able to cope with the social stressor of isolation.  相似文献

The TGF-β1-Smad pathway is a well-known negative regulator of muscle growth; however, its potential role in resistance training-induced muscle hypertrophy is not clear. The present study proposed to determine whether and how this pathway may be involved in resistance training-induced muscle hypertrophy. Skeletal muscle samples were collected from the control, trained (RT), control + SB431542 (CITGF), and trained + SB431542 (RTITGF) animals following 3, 5, and 8 weeks of resistance training. Inhibition of the TGF-β1-Smad pathway by SB431542 augmented muscle satellite cells activation, upregulated Akt/mTOR/S6K1 pathway, and attenuated FOXO1 and FOXO3a expression in the CITGF group (all p < .01), thereby causing significant muscle hypertrophy in animals from the CITGF. Resistance training significantly decreased muscle TGF-β1 expression and Smad3 (P-Smad3S423/425) phosphorylation at COOH-terminal residues, augmented Smad2 (P-Smad2-LS245/250/255) and Smad3 (P-Smad3-LSer208) phosphorylation levels at linker sites (all p < .01), and led to a muscle hypertrophy which was unaffected by SB431542, suggesting that the TGF-β1-Smad signaling pathway is involved in resistance training-induced muscle hypertrophy. The effects of inhibiting the TGF-β1-Smad signaling pathway were not additive to the resistance training effects on FOXO1 and FOXO3a expression, muscle satellite cells activation, and the Akt/mTOR/S6K1 pathway. Resistance training effect of satellite cell differentiation was independent of the TGF-β1-Smad signaling pathway. These results suggested that the effect of the TGF-β1-Smad signaling pathway on resistance training-induced muscle hypertrophy can be attributed mainly to its diminished inhibitory effects on satellite cell activation and protein synthesis. Suppressed P-Smad3S423/425 and enhanced P-Smad2-LS245/250/255 and P-Smad3-LSer208 are the molecular mechanisms that link the TGF-β1-Smad signaling pathway to resistance training-induced muscle hypertrophy.  相似文献
