Habitat modification and invasive species are significant drivers of biodiversity decline. However, distinguishing between the impacts of these two drivers on native species can be difficult. For example, habitat modification may reduce native species abundance, while an invasive species may take advantage of the new environment. This scenario has been described as the driver‐passenger model, with ‘passengers’ taking advantage of habitat modification and ‘drivers’ causing native species decline. Therefore, research must incorporate both habitat modification and invasive species impact to successfully investigate native species decline. In this paper, we used the common myna (Acridotheres tristis) as a case study to investigate the driver‐passenger model. We investigated changes in bird abundance, over 2 years, in relation to different habitat types and common myna abundance. We hypothesized that the common myna is both a passenger of habitat change and a driver of some bird species decline. Our results indicated that the abundance of many native species is greater in high tree density nature reserves, while the common myna was uncommon in these areas. Common myna abundance was almost three times higher in urban areas than nature reserves and declined rapidly as tree density in nature reserves increased. Our findings indicated that the common myna is primarily a passenger of habitat change. However, we also observed negative associations between common myna abundance and some bird species. We stress the importance of simultaneously investigating both invasive species impact and habitat modification. We suggest habitat restoration could be a useful tool for both native species recovery and invasive species control. Understanding the drivers of native species decline will help inform impact mitigation and direct further research.  相似文献

Diversification of populations of two morphologically similar diving beetles within the Agabus tristis group, A. wollastoni and A. bipustulatus, was investigated, with partial mtDNA cytochrome b (Cyt b) sequences, allozymes and landmark‐based morphometrics. The Madeiran endemic A. wollastoni was collected from 11 localities. Population genetic and morphological variation was compared to Scandinavian localities of the widespread west Palearctic A. bipustulatus, recorded also from the Azores. Agabus wollastoni and European A. bipustulatus specimens representing eight and 13 localities respectively, were used in evaluating their phylogenetic relationship. Maximum parsimony analysis of the Cyt b sequences showed that both the A. bipustulatus and A. wollastoni specimens form well‐supported monophyletic groups. Three lines of evidence suggest that Agabus wollastoni has speciated through a few founders: (1) a well‐supported mtDNA line; (2) the mean heterozygosity of A. wollastoni is lower when compared to A. bipustulatus on the mainland; and (3) several uncommon alleles of A. bipustulatus are missing in A. wollastoni. The Azorean A. bipustulatus population was drastically affected by the colonization event, since several loci have become fixed with a resulting lower mean heterozygosity. The colonization was relatively recent, as the mtDNA lineage represented in the Azores is deeply nested within the A. bipustulatus clade. Population structure shows moderate inbreeding of A. wollastoni, and extensive substructuring at all localities with moderate gene‐flow between them. Morphological variation in A. wollastoni showed significant differentiation among several populations. During the breeding season, in the western Great Victoria Desert, Western Australia, male Varanus tristis move greater daily distances (186.5 m) than females (99.7 m) and have larger activity areas (40.3 ha vs 3.7 ha). V. tristis retreat predominantly to live and dead upright Eucalyptus gongylocarpa (marble gum) trees that have hollows in their trunks and limbs. There is no observable difference between males and females in their preferred habitat, but females are found more frequently in a lesser number of preferred retreats during the breeding season.  相似文献

The population of Sooty Terns Onychoprion fuscata breeding on Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean was monitored over 17 years (1990–2007). This period spanned the programme of feral Domestic Cat Felis silvestris catus eradication from the island, which commenced in 2001 with the last Cat recorded in 2004. We report on the abundance of Sooty Terns and Black Rats Rattus rattus before and after Cat eradication. The Sooty Tern breeding population in the 1990s averaged 368 000 and Cats were killing Terns at an average rate of 33 adults per night. Following Cat eradication, adult Terns are no longer predated. However, egg predation by both Rats and Common Mynas Acridotheres tristis has continued with Mynas destroying more eggs than Rats. Unexpectedly, we observed a change in Rat predatory behaviour. Following Cat eradication, Rats have become a major predator of Sooty Tern chicks. Despite this change, the Tern population has shown a season-on-season increase since Cat eradication, 48.8% in 2005, 8.2% in 2006 and 6.1% in 2007, and the breeding population increased to 420 000 birds in 2007. Incubation success improved from 66.0 to 84.4% during Cat eradication, before dropping down again to 67.9% after Cats were eradicated and Rat control measures were introduced. Index traplines were set for Rats and Rat numbers fluctuated widely immediately after Cats were eradicated but there were no significant differences that could be attributed to changes in Cat numbers. Ascension Island Sooty Terns breed every 9.6 months and juveniles defer breeding for seven seasons. Hence 2008 is the first year in which an increase in the breeding Sooty Tern population directly attributable to Cat eradication is likely to be detected. We conclude that long-term monitoring is essential to guide conservation practice even in this relatively simple predator–prey system.  相似文献

Carotenoid pigments can directly enhance the immune responsesof vertebrates, and they are used by many animals to createornamental color displays. It has been hypothesized that thesetwo functions of carotenoid pigments are linked: animals musttrade off use of carotenoid pigments for immune function versusornamental display. We tested two key predictions of this hypothesiswith captive American goldfinches, Carduelis tristis, a specieswith extensive carotenoid-based plumage coloration. First, wetested whether the immune systems of male goldfinches are carotenoidlimited during molt by supplying treatment groups with low,approximately normal, or high dietary access to lutein and zeaxanthin.Dietary treatment had a significant effect on plumage and billcolor but not on immunocompetence. We compared the cell-mediatedand humoral immune responses and the course of disease afterinfection for males in the different treatments. We observedno significant effect of the carotenoid content of diet on immuneresponse or disease resistance. Second, we tested whether therewas a positive relationship between immune function and expressionof ornamental coloration by comparing both the pre- and posttreatmentplumage coloration of males to their immune responses. We failedto find the predicted trade-off between ornament display andimmune function. These findings do not support the hypothesisthat songbirds with extensive carotenoid-based plumage displaystrade off the use of carotenoids for ornamentation versus immunefunction.  相似文献

Cardueline finches have become important models in studies of sexual selection. Here I describe eight polymorphic microsatellite loci isolated from the American goldfinch (Carduelis tristis) that are useful in parentage and heterozygosity studies. The number of alleles per locus ranged from eight to 38 based on 252 goldfinches. The markers are polymorphic in at least four other Cardueline finch species, and several amplify in nonfinch passerines including red‐winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), black‐throated blue warbler (Dendroica caerulescens) and tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor), indicating they should be useful in paternity and population studies of a variety of species.  相似文献
