Some social species exhibit high levels of fission–fusion dynamics (FFD) that improve foraging efficiency. In this study, we shed light on the way that FFD allows animal groups to cope with fluctuations in fruit availability. We explore the relative contribution of fruit availability and social factors like sex in determining association and proximity patterns in spider monkeys. We tested the influence of fruit availability and social factors on the association and proximity patterns using three-year data from a group of spider monkeys in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. We identified subgroup members and estimated their Interindividual distances through instantaneous scan sampling. We evaluated fruit availability by monitoring the phenology of the 10 most important food tree species for spider monkeys in the study site. Social network analyses allowed us to evaluate association and proximity patterns in subgroups. We showed that association patterns vary between seasons, respond to changes in fruit availability, and are influenced by the sex of individuals, likely reflecting biological and behavioral differences between sexes and the interplay between ecological and social factors. In contrast, proximity patterns were minimally affected by changes in fruit availability, suggesting that social factors are more important than food availability in determining cohesion within subgroups.  相似文献

In the present work, we show that we obtained nanometric structures made of water, 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), cholesterol (Chol), and a mixture of ethoxylated and non-ethoxylated sorbitan fatty acid esters (Tween 20, Span 20, Tween 80, and Span 80) by mixing all of them near the cloud point temperature (cp) of the ethoxylated surfactant. The influence that the constituents had on the size of the particle was determined by a pseudo-ternary phase diagram of water/Tween–Span/DPPC–Chol; the colloidal particles obtained were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, confocal fluorescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. These studies were made for all the systems with at least 23 d of colloidal stability. The most stable system was obtained with the Tween 80–Span 80 pair, behaving as a typical suspension for 48 d; this system was made of water, Tween 80–Span 80 (80:20), DPPC–Chol (95:5) in a corresponding molar ratio of 48:37:100:10. The colloidal particles obtained were a kind of emulsion and liposome structures. The second stable system was obtained with the same mixture, but in a molar ratio of 8:6:9:0, its structure was also a kind of emulsion particles. In both systems and in other less stable ones, the “emulsion particle” was completely new, it structurally corresponds to a nucleus of mixed micelles surrounded by at least one bilayer of DPPC.  相似文献

The cyprinodontiform family Goodeidae comprises two biogeographically disjunct subfamilies: the viviparous Goodeinae endemic to the Mexican Plateau, and the oviparous Empetrichthyinae, known only from relict taxa in Nevada and California. Ovarian characteristics of two oviparous species of goodeid, Crenichthys baileyi and Empetrichthys latos, studied using museum collections, are compared with those of viviparous species of goodeids. Both subfamilies have a single, cystovarian ovary. The ovary in the viviparous Goodeinae has an internal septum that divides the ovarian lumen into two compartments, and it may possess oogonia. There is no ovarian septum in the oviparous C. baileyi and E. latos. Oogenesis is similar in both subfamilies with regard to the proliferation of oogonia, initiation of meiosis, primary growth and development of an oocyte during secondary growth in which fluid yolk progressively fuses into a single globule. Notably, eggs of C. baileyi and E. latos are approximately double the size of those of the viviparous Goodeinae in which embryos develop inside the ovarian lumen and are nourished, in part, by nutrients transferred from the maternal tissues, a mode of embryo development called matrotrophy. Egg envelopes of the two subfamilies differ in that those of C. baileyi and E. latos have a relatively thick zona pellucida, attachment fibrils or filaments that develop between the follicle cells during oogenesis, and a micropyle observed only in E. latos. In contrast, viviparous goodeid eggs have a relatively thin zona pellucida, but lack adhesive fibrils, and a micropyle was not observed. These reproductive characters are compared with those of species of the eastern North American Fundulus, a representative oviparous cyprinodontiform. One newlyrecognized shared, derived character, a single, median ovoid ovary with no obvious external evidence of fusion, supports monophyly of the Goodeidae. Differences among the goodeid subfamilies and Fundulus are interpreted relative to the oviparous versus viviparous modes of reproduction. J. Morphol., 2012. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The mammalian fauna of Mexico is one of the world's richest. Mexico can be considered a true country of megadiversity because it has more species of non-volant mammals than any other country in the New World, even after taking account of the effect of size. A comparison with other political units of the New World showed that the country as a whole harbours more non-volant mammals than expected for its size, whereas individual Mexican states have about the number of species that would be expected for their area. Beta, or differentiation diversity and environmental heterogeneity, rather than alpha or within-habitat diversity, are the key factors that determine the unusually high species richness of the country.  相似文献

The Steven–Johnson syndrome (SJS) is characterized by a sudden onset of mucous membrane erosion (predominantly oral mucosa, lips, and conjunctivae) with widespread blistering of the skin involving up to 10% of the body surface area. It is almost always a drug-related reaction, although it can be caused by infections and immunizations. A 33-year-old man with recent diagnosis of HIV infection developed antiretroviral treatment (ART)-associated SJS. Physical activity and sleep parameters were recorded by wrist actigraphy in four different consecutive scenarios: baseline assessment, first ART regimen, hospitalization, and second ART regimen. Significant differences were observed in physical activity patterns between the four phases. No differences in sleep parameters were found. To our knowledge, this is the first study recording physical activity changes and sleep during a SJS reaction.  相似文献
