Insect and veteran trees are important parts of ecosystems and are usually included in ecological studies of forest management. The loss of veteran trees in woodlands and open landscapes would lead to the loss of saproxylic organisms—an important part of biodiversity. Hence, the persistence of many specialized insects depends on the presence of veteran trees scattered in woodlands (e.g. ancient wood pastures, game parks or protected areas), cities, towns and villages (e.g. avenues, parks or chateau parks) or open landscapes (e.g. fishpond dams, solitary trees or fruit orchards). Veteran tree conditions could be fairly well described by three components—diameter, age and microhabitats present. The problem is that diameter belongs to the most studied characteristics, while age and microhabitats, which can be quite complicated to measure, are much less studied. This paper illustrates that, due to this unbalanced use of indicators of veteran-tree conditions, we are still missing some important information on saproxylic species ecology—and sometimes only large trees might be studied, rather than real veterans. Although we already know that veteran trees are essential habitat for a range of saproxylic organisms, there are still gaps in our knowledge of the specific conditions that veteran trees provide. Ecological integrity is a functional property that integrates habitat functions and species information for maintaining key ecological interactions in predator-prey systems. As a functional property, ecological integrity can be modeled as a latent concept from observable spatial attributes that measure the ecosystem's capacity to provide suitable habitat conditions for apex predators. Ecological integrity is a tri-dimensional concept that stems from “stable”, “concurrent” and “intact” conditions. A theoretical framework and a methodology is presented here for modeling ecological integrity from observable attributes (as GIS layers) to obtain a spatial representation of the integrity condition. From a theoretical framework, the ecological integrity concept is obtained with a structural equation modeling approach, where several other latent variables are obtained for characterizing a hierarchical network of spatial information. Later on, these observable attributes, and several latent modeled variables are translated into sources of geographic information that can be used to monitor changes in the natural remnant areas due to human impacts. When examining the direct, indirect and total effects of habitat loss and fragmentation on ecological integrity, spatial intactness (e.g., the amount of remnant habitat and connectivity) and stability (resistance in the interaction network and mobile links) are the attributes more affected by the pathway effects. The balance of the formative parameters obtained for the model supports the idea that ecosystems that have a high degree of integrity should maintain a high level of stability, self-organization and naturalness. Overpopulation and deficient management of the worlds coastlines have seriously degraded beaches and coastal dunes, which are environments that provide valuable ecosystem services to society. The need to restore these ecosystems is increasingly urgent; however, this is a complex task since variables that differ widely (i.e. ecological, geomorphological and socio-economic) must all be taken into consideration. The present study proposes an index in the form of a weighted checklist named the “ReDune” Index (Restoration of coastal Dunes). This index allows decision makers and non-specialized professionals with some level of understanding of coastal dynamics to decide whether coastal dunes (foredunes) require and can be restored. Furthermore, in cases where more than one coastal dune system is to be evaluated, the index can distinguish which are in the most urgent need of restoration. The index consists of four sections: the first evaluates the degree of perturbation. The second determines the presence of endogenous and exogenous stress factors that may compromise the long-term stability of the restoration. The third section is focused on highlighting the abiotic and biotic elements that may facilitate restoration. Finally, the fourth section contributes to the identification of interests related to the conservation of the site and the provision of ecosystem services. The index was tested on 31 locations along the Gulf of Mexico, with differing sedimentary, ecological and human pressure characteristics and clearly distinguished between locations where restoration is urgent from those where it is not. Physiological and behavioural constraints hinder albino individuals. Albino animals are rare in the wild; this trait is associated with easy detection by predators, non-native or damaged environments, and exclusively aphotic environments in total darkness. The social aspect of albinism is reported only for human beings, and the effect is distinguishable in time and space when social benefits, are used to a limited the extent. Thus far, the social consequences of albinism for animals remain unknown. We used socially established groups of the pigmented catfish, (Silurus glanis), to observe space and temporal distance detachment of albino specimens in laboratory conditions. The albino fish were separated at larger distances from the group than pigmented individuals with the same social status determined by familiarity, and this asymmetry also varied in time. Albinism-related ostracism results in a solitary existence, usually followed by enhanced predation risk. The motivation for an individual’s exclusion from a group appears to be the avoidance of the predation risk that increases not only for an odd individual but also for conspecifics within a group. Our findings indicate a role for albinism in behavioural processes related to sociality in a group of conspecifics. 相似文献

Covalent attachment of Candida utilis cells, possibly simulating natural microbial immobilizations, stimulated stable and significant enhancement of extracellular production of alkaline protease, specifically induced by four different starvation conditions. The enzyme analysis confirmed the identity of the proteases released under all conditions of starvation and no parallel production of other proteolytic enzyme. “Brush structures” are temporary wooden structures built with unmodified local materials and used as shelters by First Nation Peoples in the forests of the Yukon prior to European contact. This paper reports a preliminary attempt to date these structures using dendrochronology. Investigations were carried out of four njel (“teepee like”) structures and eight män-ku (low 2–3 sided wall structures) at four main sites. The primary material cored was poles (dead spruce trunks), often only 10–20 cm diameter, with narrow, sometimes extremely suppressed ring sequences. These structures are dated between 1865 and 1887, based on the latest (outermost) ring in the sampled material. The limited sampling and use of old wood in these structures (whether fire-kill, standing dead or reused from previous features) makes it difficult to give precise dates for the initial evidence of First Nation activity at these sites: more extensive sampling could provide further insight into the settlement history and construction techniques used.
