The hypothesis that resource monopolization and defense increaseas the spatial clumping of resources increases was tested usinggroups of three convict cichlids competing for 120 Daphnia magnaprey. Spatial clumping was manipulated by varying the distance(3, 20, or 40 cm) between three tubes through which the preyappeared. As predicted, monopolization of prey (percentage eatenby the dominant fish) and frequency of aggression (chases perminute) by dominant fish increased significantly as the distancebetween the tubes decreased. However, there was no evidenceof individual flexibility in the aggressiveness (percentageof conspecifics chased) of dominant fish across treatments.Differences among dominant fish in aggressiveness were positivelycorrelated with their ability to monopolize prey, but the strengthof the correlation decreased as the distance between the tubesincreased. Aggression appears to be a more effective mechanismof interference competition when resources are clumped thanwhen resources are dispersed.  相似文献

In species with polygynous mating systems, females are regarded as food-limited, while males are limited by access to mates. When local density increases, forage availability declines, while mate access for males may increase due to an increasingly female-biased sex ratio. Density dependence in emigration rates may consequently differ between sexes. Here, we investigate emigration using mark-recovery data from 468 young red deer Cervus elaphus marked in Snillfjord, Norway over a 20-year period when the population size has increased sixfold. We demonstrate a strong negative density-dependent emigration rate in males, while female emigration rates were lower and independent of density. Emigrating males leaving the natal range settled in areas with lower density than expected by chance. Dispersing males moved 42 per cent longer at high density in 1997 (37 km) than at low density in 1977 (26 km), possibly caused by increasing saturation of deer in areas surrounding the marking sites. Our study highlights that pattern of density dependence in dispersal rates may differ markedly between sexes in highly polygynous species. Contrasting patterns reported in small-scale studies are suggestive that spatial scale of density variation may affect the pattern of temporal density dependence in emigration rates and distances.  相似文献

1. Despite the growing view that biodiversity provides a unifying theme in river ecology, global perspectives on richness in riverine landscapes are limited. As a result, there is little theory or quantitative data on features that might have influenced global patterns in riverine richness, nor are there clear indications of which riverine landscapes are important to conservation at the global scale. As conspicuous elements of the vertebrate fauna of riverine landscapes, we mapped the global distributions of all of the world's specialist riverine birds and assessed their richness in relation to latitude, altitude, primary productivity and geomorphological complexity (surface configuration). 2. Specialist riverine birds, typical of high‐energy riverine landscapes and dependent wholly or partly on production from river ecosystems, occur in 16 families. They are represented by an estimated 60 species divided equally between the passerines and non‐passerines. Major radiation has occurred among different families on different continents, indicating that birds have evolved several times into the niches provided by riverine landscapes. 3. Continental richness varies from four species in Europe to 28 in Asia, with richness on the latter continent disproportionately larger than would be expected from a random distribution with respect to land area. Richness is greatest in mountainous regions at latitudes of 20–40°N in the riverine landscapes of the Himalayan mountains, where 13 species overlap in range. 4. Family, genus and species richness in specialist riverine birds all increase significantly with productivity and surface configuration (i.e. relief). However, family richness was the best single predictor of the numbers of species or genera. In keeping with the effect of surface configuration, river‐bird richness peaks globally at 1300–1400 m altitude, and most species occur typically on small, fast rivers where they feed predominantly on invertebrates. Increased lengths of such streams in areas of high relief and rainfall might have been responsible for species–area effects. 5. We propose the hypothesis that the diversity in channel forms and habitats in riverine landscapes, in addition to high temperature and primary productivity, have been prerequisites to the development of global patterns in the richness of specialist riverine organisms. We advocate tests of this hypothesis in other taxonomic groups. We draw attention, however, to the challenges of categorically defining riverine organisms in such tests because (i) rivers grade into many other habitat types across several different ecotones and (ii) `terrestrialisation' processes in riverine landscapes means that they offer habitat for organisms whose evolutionary origins are not exclusively riverine.  相似文献

Artificial immune recognition system (AIRS) classification algorithm, which has an important place among classification algorithms in the field of artificial immune systems, has showed an effective and intriguing performance on the problems it was applied. AIRS was previously applied to some medical classification problems including breast cancer, Cleveland heart disease, diabetes and it obtained very satisfactory results. So, AIRS proved to be an efficient artificial intelligence technique in medical field. In this study, the resource allocation mechanism of AIRS was changed with a new one determined by fuzzy-logic. This system, named as fuzzy-AIRS was used as a classifier in the diagnosis of lymph diseases, which is of great importance in medicine. The classifications of lymph diseases dataset taken from University of California at Irvine (UCI) Machine Learning Repository were done using 10-fold cross-validation method. Reached classification accuracies were evaluated by comparing them with reported classifiers in UCI web site in addition to other systems that are applied to the related problems. Also, the obtained classification performances were compared with AIRS with regard to the classification accuracy, number of resources and classification time. While only AIRS algorithm obtained 83.138% classification accuracy, fuzzy-AIRS classified the lymph diseases dataset with 90.00% accuracy. For lymph diseases dataset, fuzzy-AIRS obtained the highest classification accuracy according to the UCI web site. Beside of this success, fuzzy-AIRS gained an important advantage over the AIRS by means of classification time. By reducing classification time as well as obtaining high classification accuracies in the applied datasets, fuzzy-AIRS classifier proved that it could be used as an effective classifier for medical problems.  相似文献

The flowering of Clutia pulchella was studied in a coastal scarp forest community in southern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Sex dependent differences in the frequency and magnitude of floral output were recorded, with male individuals producing 4.32 times more flowers per leaf axis than females. Increased node production, as a manifestation of significantly increased branching, allowed for prolific flower production in males. Energy investment per flower was marginally greater in females (0.045 J/mg), despite copious pollen production and glandular secretion in males (0.035 J/mg). Differential flower production, reproductive organ dry mass and an unbalanced branching ratio revealed that “per plant” expenditure towards flowering was more pronounced in males (♀ flowering × 5.04). The elevated cost of fruit production (♀ flowering × 5.5), inclusive of imperfect fruit set, resulted in overall reproductive expense being slightly higher for females. Such sex-dependent reproductive investment was shown to have minimal influence on the population sex ratio, with sex frequencies and nearest neighbor distances yielding a non-significant male bias of 1.16. No evidence of spatial asymmetry was found. Received December 1, 1999 Accepted September 27, 2000  相似文献

In gynodioecious species, females contribute genes to future generations only through ovules, and to persist in populations they must have a compensatory advantage compared with hermaphrodites that reproduce via ovules and pollen. This compensation can result from greater fecundity and/or superior success of progeny from females. We examined differences in seed production and progeny success between females and hermaphrodites in the geophyte Wurmbea biglandulosa to explain the maintenance of females. Females produced more ovuliferous flowers and had more ovules per flower than did hermaphrodites but this did not necessarily result in greater fecundity, in part because seed production of females was pollen-limited. Over four years in one population, open-pollinated females produced 1.32 more seeds than open-pollinated hermaphrodites (range 1.09–1.63). In two other populations examined for one year only females produced 1.07 and 0.79 as many seeds as hermaphrodites. Seed production of open-pollinated females and hermaphrodites was only 55% and 73% that of cross-pollinated plants, respectively, indicating that both genders were pollen-limited but females more so than hermaphrodites. Open-pollinated seeds from females were 1.18–1.27 times more likely to germinate than seeds from hermaphrodites. No gender differences existed in seedling growth or survival. Hermaphrodites were self-compatible, but selfed seed set was only 80% that of crossed seed set. Crossed seed set of females and hermaphrodites did not differ. Assuming nuclear control of male sterility, relative female fitness is insufficient to maintain females at their current frequencies of 17%, and substantial female fitness advantages at later life-cycle stages are required. In many ecological situations, resources are difficult to find but become more apparent to nearby searchers after one of their numbers discovers and begins to exploit them. If the discoverer cannot monopolize the resources, then others may benefit from joining the discoverer and sharing their discovery. Existing theories for this type of conspecific attraction have often used very simple rules for how the decision to join a discovered resource patch should be influenced by the number of individuals already exploiting that patch. We use a mechanistic, spatially explicit model to demonstrate that individuals should not necessarily simply join patches more often as the number of individuals exploiting the patch increases, because those patches are likely to be exhausted soon or joining them will intensify future local competition. Furthermore, we show that this decision should be sensitive to the nature of the resource patches, with individuals being more responsive to discoveries in general and more tolerant of larger numbers of existing exploiters on a patch when patches are resource-rich and challenging to locate alone. As such, we argue that this greater focus on underlying joining mechanisms suggests that conspecific attraction is a more sophisticated and flexible tactic than currently appreciated.  相似文献

Theoretical models of species coexistence between desert mammals have generally been based on a combination of food and microhabitat selection by granivorous rodents. Although these models are applicable in various deserts of the world, they cannot explain resource use by mammals in Neotropical deserts. The present study examines diet composition in a mammal assemblage in the Monte desert, Argentina. The results show that two main strategies are used by these mammals: medium‐sized species (hystricognath rodents: Dolichotis patagonum, Lagostomus maximus, Microcavia australis and Galea musteloides; and an exotic lagomorph: Lepus europaeus) are herbivores, whereas small‐sized species (a marsupial: Thylamys pusillus; and sigmodontine rodents: Graomys griseoflavus, Akodon molinae, Calomys musculinus, Eligmodontia typus) are omnivorous. Small mammals also show a tendency towards granivory (C. musculinus), insectivory (A. molinae and T. pusillus) and folivory (G. griseoflavus).  相似文献
