Like many other parasitoids, Brachymeria intermedia (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae) uses olfactory cues to find its host, but in addition it appears to use learned visual cues to focus its searching efforts at the macrohabitat level. In laboratory experiments, females were held in cages where Lymantria dispar pupae were hidden either in a vertical, tree-like structure or on the floor. After four days females had learned to search for hosts in the structure in which they previously had found pupae. Such training was reversible. During similar tests in a semi-natural situation, in which pupae were hung from a tree trunk or were hidden under leaf litter, females also tailored their subsequent searching to favour the macrohabitat where hosts previously had been found. This parasitoid most likely uses a combination of visual and olfactory cues during host searching.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The duration of diapause in larvae of Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) was assessed at 20°C in LD 11:13. Mean times from hatch to pupation for diapausing larvae from different populations ranged from 88 to 236 days. Most non-diapausing larvae pupated within 70 days at this temperature. Transferring diapausing larvae to 25°C and LD 9:15, or to 20°C and LD 15:9, 70 days after hatch reduced the subsequent mean time to pupation by 18–82% and 9–63% respectively. Only two population samples terminated diapause faster under LD 15:9 at 20°C than under LD 9:15 at 25°C. The mortality of diapausing larvae caused by 6- or 10-week exposures at 5, 7.5 or 10°C was generally less than 25%. Hybrids produced from a reciprocal cross between a temperate and a tropical African stock survived well. For other stocks there was some correlation between survival and diapause intensity. The low temperature regime which resulted in the greatest shortening of pupation time after return to the conditions used to induce diapause, did not always coincide with the temperature permitting the best survival. Results, however, indicate that some individuals of all stocks but one from the tropics are likely to survive in the U.K.  相似文献

Larviposition of Compsilura concinnata, a polyphagous tachinid parasitoid of Lepidoptera, is described. The conventional assessment, long‐established in the literature, places the site of larval deposition by C. concinnata as directly into the host's gut. New evidence, reported here, contradicts the earlier view. Dissection of 38 freshly parasitized gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) larvae revealed as many maggots (n = 26) situated in the lumen of the midgut as were free in the hemocoel. Observations on maggot behavior and morphology in dissected hosts are briefly presented.  相似文献

Abstract. Food selection behaviour, food utilization efficiency and growth performance of a generalist insect, the gypsy moth ( Lymantria dispar (L.), Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), were examined with respect to variation in food nitrogen concentration. The results suggest that gypsy moth do not suffer physiologically and in fact may benefit from intraplant variation by selective feeding. When provided with diet cubes containing identical nitrogen concentrations, control larvae tended to consume food from a single cube. This behaviour contrasted with that of larvae provided cubes differing in nitrogen concentration. These larvae tended to consume more from the high nitrogen cube, but allocated feeding more evenly among diet cubes than did control larvae. Overall, larvae mixed foods so as to obtain a mean concentration of 2.9-3.2% nitrogen, a concentration assumed to approximate the 'intake target'. Larvae confined to single nitrogen concentrations mitigated the impact of imbalanced diets on body composition via both pre-ingestive and post-ingestive compensation. When confined to a specific nitrogen concentration, larvae adjusted their intake to the point of best compromise. In this case, this was the geometrically closest point to the estimated intake target. Larvae with a choice of foods that deviated more than ±1% from each other in nitrogen concentration grew as well as or better than larvae without a choice but given identical mean nitrogen concentrations. These results demonstrate that selectivity and nitrogen consumption by gypsy moth larvae are altered according to the particular choices available. Insects may benefit from intraplant variation in food quality because such variation provides the opportunity to choose foods and mix them in ways that permit close matching with the intake target. Variation may be particularly important to insects which must offset changing nutritional demands.  相似文献

Abstract. High percentages of naive Cadra cautella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) males not pre-exposed to pheromone flew upwind to sources containing 50 ng (83%) and 500 ng (97%) of pheromone, but not to sources containing 5 μg (23%) and 50 μg (4%).Of the naive males that flew upwind in response to 50 ng sources, 67% located and landed on the source, whereas fewer than 19% of the naive males that flew upwind in response to higher doses located and landed on the sources.A 2-minute pre-exposure of C.cautella males to a spray cloud containing 50 ng, 500 ng, 5 μg or 50 μg of pheromone, induced shifts in response levels such that in wind-tunnel bioassays performed 1 h later, there was an increase in the doses that optimally elicited upwind flight and landing on the source that was proportional to the pre-exposure dose.Few of the pre-exposed males flew upwind to (10–43%) and landed on (0–33%) 50 ng sources, whereas they now perferentially flew upwind to(58–81% and 52–73%) and landed on (33–68% and 55–60%) pheromone sources of doses of 500 ng and 5 μg, respectively. Therefore pre-exposure to pheromone promoted a shift of threshold for response, and not an overall reduction in responsiveness to pheromone.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Male oriental fruit moths, Grapholitha molesta (Busck) (Tortricidae), continue to zigzag along a pheromone plume to the source in zero wind, if they have started flight with wind on. If the pheromone source is removed and the plume is hence truncated, moths flying in zero wind out of the end of the plume into clean air increase the width of their reversals and the angles of the straight legs of the tracks so they are more directly across the former wind line. Such moths reach the source less often than do those flying along a continuous plume. The males continue to zigzag up a plume in zero wind, apparently by a combination of sequential sampling of concentration along their path and the performance of an internal, self-steered programme of track reversals (zigzags) whose frequency increases with concentration. Visual feedback may aid in the still-air performance of the zigzags. We propose that both the sequential sampling (longitudinal klinotaxis) and self-steered counter-turning programme also are used in wind as well; anemotaxis apparently polarizes the direction of the zigzags to result in upwind displacement, and the narrow zigzags caused by the higher concentration in the plume keep the male 'locked on' to the odour.  相似文献

ABSTRACT In field-trapping experiments the unsaturated analogues ( E )-6-, ( E )-12-, and ( Z )-12-tetradecenyl acetate were as attractive to male Yponomeuta rorellus Latr. as the native pheromone component tetradecyl acetate. All four analogues attracted more males than virgin females did, whereas ( Z )-6-, ( E )-11-, ( Z )-10- and ( Z )-11-tetradecenyl acetate were essentially non-attractive. Addition of 1–30% of ( Z )-11-tetradecenyl acetate to the pheromone tetradecyl acetate reduced the attraction to less than 2%. Flight tunnel experiments with Y. rorellus confirmed the activity of the ( E )-6- and ( E )-12-tetradecenyl acetates and demonstrated the activity of ( E )-7-tetradecenyl acetate as well. These analogues elicited orientation behaviour, upwind flight and landing at the odour source as frequently as the native pheromone did. Single sensillum recordings from male Y. rorellus showed two types of cells in most sensilla. A large spike amplitude cell was stimulated by tetradecyl acetate and the unsaturated analogues ( E )-11-, ( E )-6- and ( E )-12-tetradecenyl acetate, and to a lower extent by the ( Z )-6-, ( Z )-11- and ( Z )-12-isomers. A cell with medium spike amplitude was stimulated by ( Z )-9-tetradecenyl and ( Z )-11-hexadecenyl acetate. Some sensilla contained a third cell firing with a small spike amplitude which was activated by ( Z )-11-tetradecenol. Thus the tetradecyl acetate receptor was stimulated not only by the behaviourally active analogues, but also by behavioural antagonists. The interaction of ( E )-11-tetra-decenyl acetate and tetradecyl acetate with the same antennal receptor cell was also demonstrated in Y.cagnagellus . Electrophysiological discrimination between behavioural attractants and antagonists and the role of behavioural antagonists in the interspecific relations between Y.rorellus and sympatric closely related species are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. . The independent and interactive effects of temperature and dietary nitrogen content on performance of the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) were examined. In long-term feeding trials, larvae were reared from egg hatch to pupation on low (1.5%) and high (3.7% dry weight) nitrogen diets, under three temperature regimes. Short-term feeding trials with fourth instars and the same treatments were conducted in order to calculate nutritional indices.
Higher temperatures did not influence larval survival and marginally increased final pupal weights, but strongly decreased long-term development rates. They also accelerated short-term growth and consumption rates, and tended to improve food processing efficiencies. High concentrations of dietary nitrogen increased survival rates and final pupal weights markedly, but decreased long-term development rates only marginally. A high content of dietary nitrogen also accelerated short-term development and growth rates, reduced consumption rates, and improved food digestibility. Insects responded to low nitrogen-content diets primarily by eating faster, rather than by altering efficiency of nitrogen use. In the short-term feeding trials, thermal regime and dietary nitrogen interacted to influence growth rates, overall food processing efficiencies and nitrogen consumption rates. No interactive effects were observed in long-term studies.
This research demonstrates that small changes in thermal regime and ecologically relevant variation in dietary nitrogen content can strongly affect gypsy moth performance. Moreover, various performance parameters are differentially sensitive to the direct and interactive effects of temperature and diet.  相似文献
