This study was aimed to assess the effects of calcium lactate (CL) on quality, shelf-life and storage physiology of bitter gourd. Fruits were dipped in the aqueous solution of CL (50, 75, and 100 mM) and stored at 10 °C and 85–95% relative humidity (RH). The changes in physical, biochemical and enzymological parameters were recorded at five days interval. The results showed that in CL@100 mM treated fruit, physiological loss in weight (PLW) and decay incidence were minimized. Conversely, their firmness, total phenolics, antioxidants and total chlorophyll retained at higher side. The CL @ 75 mM was able to retain higher ascorbic acid up to 20 days while CL@100 mM was effective in controlling pectin methylesterase (PME) activity and increasing the inhibitory activity of α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Therefore, our observations suggested that by applying CL@100 mM, 5 days extra (20 days) shelf-life of bitter gourd fruit can be achieved with notable retention of biochemical compounds over untreated fruit (15 days with poor retention of important nutrients).  相似文献

Seven phenolic compounds, 1 – 7 , including a new organic acid gallate, mucic acid 1‐ethyl 6‐methyl ester 2‐O‐gallate ( 7 ), were isolated from the MeOH extract of the fruits of Phyllanthus emblica L. (Euphorbiaceae). The structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis and comparison with literature data. Upon evaluated for their antioxidant abilities by 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′‐azinobis(3‐ethylbenzthiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The inhibitory activities against melanogenesis in B16 melanoma cells induced by α‐MSH, as well as cytotoxic activities against four human cancer cell lines were also evaluated. All phenolic compounds, 1 – 7 , exhibited potent antioxidant abilities (DPPH: IC50 5.6 – 12.9 μm ; ABTS: 0.87 – 8.43 μm Trolox/μm ; FRAP: 1.01 – 5.79 μm Fe2+/μm , respectively). Besides, 5 – 7 , also exhibited moderate inhibitory activities against melanogenesis (80.7 – 86.8% melanin content), even with no or low toxicity to the cells (93.5 – 101.6% cell viability) at a high concentration of 100 μm . Compounds 1 – 3 exhibited cytotoxic activity against one or more cell lines (IC50 13.9 – 68.4%), and compound 1 with high tumor selectivity for A549 (SI 3.2).  相似文献

The antioxidant activity of eight edible species of Malaysian North Borneo seaweeds obtained from Sabah waters (Kudat, Tanjung Aru and Semporna) consisting of three red seaweeds (Eucheuma cottonii, E. spinosum and Halymenia durvillaei), two green seaweeds (Caulerpa lentillifera and C. racemosa) and three brown seaweeds (Dictyota dichotoma, Sargassum polycystum and Padina sp.) were determined. Methanol and diethyl ether were used as extraction solvent. The antioxidant activities were determined by two methods, TEAC (trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity) and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) assays. The total phenolic content of the extract was determined according to the Folin–Ciocalteu method and results were expressed as phloroglucinol equivalents. The methanolic extracts of green seaweeds, C. lentillifera and C. racemosa, and the brown seaweed, S. polycystum showed better radical-scavenging and reducing power ability, and higher phenolic content than the other seaweeds. The TEAC and FRAP assays showed positive and significantly high correlation (R 2 = 0.89). There was a strong correlation (R 2 = 0.96) between the reducing power and the total phenolic content of the seaweeds methanolic dry extracts. These seaweeds could be potential rich sources of natural antioxidants.  相似文献

Furanocoumarins (FCs) in grapefruit are involved in the “grapefruit/drug interactions” in humans, in which the FCs inhibit the intestinal cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP 3A4) activity responsible for metabolizing certain prescribed medications. These interactions have adversely affected the grapefruit industry and have led a need to develop a process to remove the FCs from grapefruit juice (GFJ) in a manner that retains much of the original juice sensory attributes. In our experiments, grapefruit juice was incubated with Aspergillus niger, and the compositional changes in hydroxycinnamates, flavonoid glycosides, and the FCs were monitored. Many of the FCs and 7-geranyloxycoumarin were efficiently taken up by the fungal tissue, whereas no uptake occurred with the polar hydroxycinnamates, flavonoid glycosides, and a few of the polar FCs. This biosorption was also observed with autoclaved A. niger, indicating that the uptake of non-polar FCs by the fungal hyphae was due to adsorption rather than metabolism. The binding of the FCs to autoclaved fungus was complete within 4 h, and the level of binding was proportional to the amount of autoclaved fungal hyphae used. This removal of the FCs from GFJ led to a reduced inhibition of CYP 3A4 activity in in vitro assays by both GFJ and GFJ extracts.  相似文献

We have been able to isolate several phytotoxic compounds from aqueous extracts and leachates of cattails (Typha domingensis) using activated charcoal as an absorbant, followed by successive extraction with organic solvents, analysis by GC/MS, and structural elucidation by NMR spectroscopy when possible. The phytotoxins were identified as essential fatty acids (linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid) and phenolic compounds of known phytotoxic activity (caffeic acid from the aqueous extracts; caffeic, p-coumaric, and gallic acid from the leachates). Both extracts and the phytotoxins in the extracts have the potential of inhibiting the growth and chlorophyll production of several ecologically relevant species.  相似文献

Partially O-acetylated xylo-oligosaccharides (DXO) isolated from almond shells by autohydrolysis as well as their de-acetylated form (DeXO) were subjected to chemical, molecular, and structural analyses. They represent a mixture of neutral and acidic oligomers and low-molecular weight polymers related to (4-O-methyl-D-glucurono)-D-xylan. DXO and DeXO showed direct mitogenic activity and enhancement of the T-mitogen-induced proliferation of rat thymocytes, indicating the immunostimulatory potential of the almond shell xylo-oligosaccharides.  相似文献

In this paper, the influence of lactic acid fermentation on the metabolic profile of ginkgo kernel juice was studied. For this purpose, three lactic acid bacteria (LAB), Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus casei, were selected. The results showed that all the lactobacilli grew well in ginkgo kernel juice with viable cell counts exceeding 8.0 Log CFU/mL. The organic acid contents underwent dynamic changes, and the lactic acid production reached more than 3 g/L. The consumption of sugars and free amino acids by LAB was evident. Meanwhile, more than 70% of the ginkgolic acids were degraded by LAB, and the final concentrations in ginkgo kernel juice were below 1 mg/L after 48 h of fermentation. In contrast, the terpene lactones contents in fermented ginkgo kernel juice exceed 20 mg/L, which was 1.6-fold higher than that in the unfermented juice. Certain phenolics were significantly enriched, and the total phenolic content increased by approximately 9% through fermentation. In addition, lactic acid fermentation significantly enhanced the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of ginkgo kernel juice. Overall, the results indicated that lactic acid fermentation can effectively improve the nutritional value and safety of ginkgo kernel juice.  相似文献

In this experiment we investigate how chemical and physical attributes affect the grazing of 14 species of Hakea (Proteaceae) seedlings by western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus). Needle-leaved Hakeas were preferred over broad-leaved congeners, although differences between species within these groups were sometimes large. Needle-leaved species had smaller, thicker and spinier leaves with lower phenolic contents, but similar nitrogen contents (except for high levels in H. platysperma). The three tallest needle-leaved species, with longest, most upright and thickest leaves (H. adnata, H. obliqua and H. platysperma) were most preferred. Principal components analysis on attributes of the 14 species showed that the relative volume of shoot material consumed was significantly related (inversely) to phenolic content. Chemical defences therefore appear to have a significant deterrent role at this stage in the plant’s life history. Physical defences however were ineffective deterrents against kangaroo herbivory raising the possibility that other ecophysiological factors contribute to the possession of structures such as spines and sclerophylly in young seedlings.  相似文献

Phenolics as potential antioxidant therapeutic agents: mechanism and actions   总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16  
Accumulating chemical, biochemical, clinical and epidemiological evidence supports the chemoprotective effects of phenolic antioxidants against oxidative stress-mediated disorders. The pharmacological actions of phenolic antioxidants stem mainly from their free radical scavenging and metal chelating properties as well as their effects on cell signaling pathways and on gene expression. The antioxidant capacities of phenolic compounds that are widely distributed in plant-based diets were assessed by the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), the hypochlorite scavenging capacity, the deoxyribose method and the copper-phenanthroline-dependent DNA oxidation assays. Based on the TEAC, FRAP and hypochlorite scavenging data, the observed activity order was: procyanidin dimer > flavanol > flavonol > hydroxycinnamic acids > simple phenolic acids. Among the flavonol aglycones, the antioxidant propensities decrease in the order quercetin, myricetin and kaempferol. Gallic acid and rosmarinic acid were the most potent antioxidants among the simple phenolic and hydroxycinnamic acids, respectively. Ferulic acid displayed the highest inhibitory activity against deoxyribose degradation but no structure–activity relationship could be established for the activities of the phenolic compounds in the deoxyribose assay. The efficacies of the phenolic compounds differ depending on the mechanism of antioxidant action in the respective assay used, with procyanidin dimers and flavan-3-ols showing very potent activities in most of the systems tested. Compared to the physiologically active (glutathione, -tocopherol, ergothioneine) and synthetic (Trolox, BHA, BHT) antioxidants, these compounds exhibited much higher efficacy. Plant-derived phenolics represents good sources of natural antioxidants, however, further investigation on the molecular mechanism of action of these phytochemicals is crucial to the evaluation of their potential as prophylactic agents.  相似文献
