Caryocyst-Like Host Cell Formation by Caryospora duszynskii (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) in Human Fetal Lung Cell Cultures1

ABSTRACT. Sporozoites of the coccidium, Caryospora duszynskii, penetrated human fetal lung cell cultures but did not undergo asexual or sexual multiplication during a 29-day observation period. Beginning three days postinoculation (PI), infected host cells lost their normal elongated fibroblast-like shape and became ellipsoidal in appearance and resembled caryocysts. These caryocyst-like infected cells were observed from 3 through 29 days PI. Sporozoites remained viable throughout the study as evidenced by motility of extracellular sporozoites in infected human fetal lung cell cultures. Results of this in vitro study suggest that some species of Caryospora may form caryocysts in secondary hosts without undergoing asexual or sexual multiplication in these hosts.     

The Papanicolaou-Traut method of cancer diagnosis; its use as a routine pathologic laboratory procedure

In a series of 450 examinations by the smear technique in the pathologic laboratory of a small private hospital, the total diagnostic error on all smears was 6.6 per cent. The error on vaginal smears was 4.7 per cent. These figures include false positives, false negatives, and all those smears classified as suspicious even though positive or negative diagnoses were made on subsequent examinations. The Papanicolaou-Traut method of cancer diagnosis can easily be made one of the routine pathologic procedures in the small hospital laboratory. Technicians with little previous cytologic experience can be trained to screen vaginal and other smears accurately after a short training period. This cytologic method is proving to be of value in the early detection of some neoplasms, and if its application is to be extended, the practicing pathologist should add the test to his diagnostic routine.     

The pathology of the nodular goiter

Pathologic studies of thyroid nodules indicate that a definite percentage of nodular goiters are malignant, and that an even higher percentage are true neoplasms. Malignant tumors may arise from adenomas, involutionary nodules or possibly from nodules of the unclassified type. Some carcinomas of the thyroid gland are undoubtedly malignant processes from the start. Because of the high incidence of neoplasms, benign and malignant, in a group of single nodules of the thyroid gland, the presence of such nodules should warrant radical resections of the involved lobe and adjacent isthmus. The high incidence of epithelial growth activity in nodular involutionary goiters may revise the accepted practice of removing non-toxic nodular goiters only when clinical evidence of growth or local pressure is present.
