Question: Is seedling recruitment of a fleshy‐fruited tree in degraded Afromontane savanna dependent on shelter from pioneer shrubs, and is shelter availability related to shrub traits? Location: Degraded montane savanna in northern Ethiopia (13°36′N, 39°21′E). Method: Nurse plants of Olea europaea ssp. cuspidata seedlings were recorded using T‐square plotless sampling and clustered according to shrub traits, using Ward's method after Principal Components Analysis. Facilitation was further examined through experimental planting and Kaplan‐Meier survival analysis. Results: Both in grazed and protected areas, Olea recruits were found exclusively under shrubs, primarily under Euclea racemosa although Acacia etbaica was more abundant. Olea recruitment is distributed randomly at landscape scale, but depends on shelter at patch scale. Shelter ability is related to shrub shape and species identity. Dense multi‐stemmed shrubs with a wide base and crown on a mulch‐rich mound are key recruitment foci. Euclea shrubs have these favoured traits and probably act as preferential perching sites for avian seed dispersers. Soil and organic matter accumulation under Euclea shrubs may also create favourable conditions for Olea germination and survival. Experimentally planted seedlings had a better chance for survival under Euclea. Conclusions: Olea regeneration is probably subject to both passive (disperser‐mediated) and active facilitation. Small changes of shrub traits can alter the suitability of a patch for Olea recruitment. Protection of shrubs can increase facilitation for seedlings, while pruning may reduce competition for saplings and thus enhance forest succession. Planting of raised Olea seedlings under Euclea shrubs in years with a good rainy season may further assist forest restoration. 相似文献

Soil modification by invasive plants: effects on native and invasive species of mixed-grass prairies 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Invasive plants are capable of modifying attributes of soil to facilitate further invasion by conspecifics and other invasive
species. We assessed this capability in three important plant invaders of grasslands in the Great Plains region of North America:
leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula), smooth brome (Bromus inermis) and crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum). In a glasshouse, these three invasives or a group of native species were grown separately through three cycles of growth
and soil conditioning in both steam-pasteurized and non-pasteurized soils, after which we assessed seedling growth in these
soils. Two of the three invasive species, Bromus and Agropyron, exhibited significant self-facilitation via soil modification. Bromus and Agropyron also had significant facilitative effects on other invasives via soil modification, while Euphorbia had significant antagonistic effects on the other invasives. Both Agropyron and Euphorbia consistently suppressed growth of two of three native forbs, while three native grasses were generally less affected. Almost
all intra- and interspecific effects of invasive soil conditioning were dependent upon presence of soil biota from field sites
where these species were successful invaders. Overall, these results suggest that that invasive modification of soil microbiota
can facilitate plant invasion directly or via ‘cross-facilitation’ of other invasive species, and moreover has potential to
impede restoration of native communities after removal of an invasive species. However, certain native species that are relatively
insensitive to altered soil biota (as we observed in the case of the forb Linum lewisii and the native grasses), may be valuable as ‘nurse’species in restoration efforts. 相似文献

Abstract. Savanna trees have a multitude of positive and negative effects on understorey grass production, but little is known about how these effects interact. We report on a fertilization and shading experiment carried out in a Tanzanian tropical dry savanna around Acacia tortilis trees. In two years of study there was no difference in grass production under tree canopies or in open grassland. Fertilization, however, indicate that trees do affect the nutrient limitation of the grass layer with an N‐limited system in open grassland to a P‐limited system under the trees. The N:P ratios of grass gave a reliable indication of the nature of nutrient limitation, but only when assessed at the end of the wet season. Mid‐wet season nutrient concentrations of grasses were higher under than outside the tree canopy, suggesting that factors other than nutrients limit grass production. A shading experiment indicated that light may be such a limiting factor during the wet season when water and nutrients are sufficiently available. However, in the dry season when water is scarce, the effect of shade on plant production became positive. We conclude that whether trees increase or decrease production of the herbaceous layer depends on how positive effects (increased soil fertility) and negative effects (shade and soil water availability) interact and that these interactions may significantly change between wet and dry seasons. 相似文献

The stress-gradient hypothesis (SGH) predicts that the relative importance of competition decreases and facilitation increases with an increase in abiotic stress. In peatlands, Sphagnum faces the threat of drought and differentiates into hummock species (drought-tolerant) and hollow species. Whether interspecific interaction affects the influence of drought on bryophyte composition in peatlands is unknown. We established an experiment by simulating drought and building bryophyte communities with two hummock species (S. palustre and S. capillifolium) and one hollow species (S. fallax). In all three species, drought decreased biomass production, height increment and side-shoot production. Sphagnum stores water in the hyaline cells, and leaf hyaline cell percentage (HCP) in the two hummock species increased with drought while no effect was found in S. fallax, suggesting that adjusting HCP is not an effective response to drought for the hollow species. Morphological traits and carbon and nitrogen contents in hummock species responded more to drought than in the hollow species, indicating a rapid response in phenotypic plasticity is an important strategy to resist drought in the hummock species. The presence of neighboring Sphagnum species, rather than drought, decreased carbon content for all three species. All three bryophytes showed interaction between drought and neighbor in two or more plant traits. Our study, however, did not support SGH, and there were no changes from competition under wet to facilitation under dry treatments in any of the six species combinations. On the contrary, when S. fallax was the target species, a change from facilitation under wet to competition under dry treatments was observed. The results suggest that hummock species can facilitate hollow species in wet environments but they could suppress hollow species under drought conditions by competing for water resources. Both drought and strong competition are the probable reasons why hollow species rarely grow in hummocks. 相似文献

Presynaptic Ca(V)2.1 channels, which conduct P/Q-type Ca(2+) currents, initiate synaptic transmission at most synapses in the central nervous system. Regulation of Ca(V)2.1 channels by CaM contributes significantly to short term facilitation and rapid depression of synaptic transmission. Short term synaptic plasticity is diverse in form and function at different synapses, yet CaM is ubiquitously expressed. Differential regulation of Ca(V)2.1 channels by CaM-like Ca(2+) sensor (CaS) proteins differentially affects short term synaptic facilitation and rapid synaptic depression in transfected sympathetic neuron synapses. Here, we define the molecular determinants for differential regulation of Ca(V)2.1 channels by the CaS protein calcium-binding protein-1 (CaBP1) by analysis of chimeras in which the unique structural domains of CaBP1 are inserted into CaM. Our results show that the N-terminal domain, including its myristoylation site, and the second EF-hand, which is inactive in Ca(2+) binding, are the key molecular determinants of differential regulation of Ca(V)2.1 channels by CaBP1. These findings give insight into the molecular code by which CaS proteins differentially regulate Ca(V)2.1 channel function and provide diversity of form and function of short term synaptic plasticity. 相似文献

Because dominant competitors can monopolize resources, any positive effects they have on other species can have large community impacts. The solitary tunicate Ascidia ceratodes is a dominant competitor in the fouling community in Bodega Harbor, CA. This tunicate preempts primary substratum from competitors, but its thick tunic also allows other species to grow on its surface. The net effect of Ascidia on the community as a whole therefore depends on the balance between competitive and facilitative effects. In this study we evaluate the facilitative effects of Ascidia on different life stages of common competing species. We quantified larval settlement onto Ascidia compared to unoccupied space; we quantified the growth rate on Ascidia of small colonies of two common species; and we measured whether established colonies could escape overgrowth by Ascidia by growing onto its tunic. We found evidence for high rates of settlement on Ascidia, with some species showing higher and others lower settlement relative to that observed on free space. The growth rate of settlers was generally lower on Ascidia compared to primary substratum. We also found that colonial species established on primary space commonly escape overgrowth from Ascidia by growing onto Ascidia, as this occurs in about half of all encounters. This study indicates that the total effect of Ascidia on the community will depend on species-specific and life stage-specific effects, with likely long-term consequences for the diversity and composition of the community. 相似文献

Distinct effects of D-serine on spinal nociceptive responses in normal and carrageenan-injected rats

Single unit extracellular recordings from dorsal horn neurons were performed with glass micropipettes in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats. A total of 60 wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons were obtained from 34 rats. In normal rats (20/34), spinally administered D-serine (10 nmol), a putative endogenous agonist of glycine site of NMDA receptors, significantly enhanced the C- but not Abeta-, and Adelta-fiber responses of WDR neurons in the spinal dorsal horn. When 1 nmol of the glycine site antagonist 7-chlorokynurenic acid (7-CK) was co-administered with 10 nmol D-serine, the facilitation of D-serine on C-fiber response was completely blocked. 7-CK (1 nmol) alone failed to influence Abeta-, Adelta-, and C-fiber responses of WDR neurons. In contrast, in carrageenan-injected rats (14/34), 10 nmol D-serine had no effect on C-fiber response, while 1 nmol 7-CK per se markedly depressed C-fiber response of WDR neurons. These findings suggest that under physiological conditions, glycine sites in the spinal cord were available but became saturated following peripheral inflammation. Thus, increased endogenous d-serine or glycine may be involved in nociceptive transmission by modulating NMDA receptor activities. The glycine site of NMDA receptors may become a target for the prevention of inflammatory pain. 相似文献
