The Japanese pine sawyer, Monochamus alternatus Hope (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), is known to be the primary vector of pinewood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Buhrer) Nickle that causes pine wilt disease. Adult activity of M. alternatus caught in a pheromone trap on Jeju Island of Korea showed a bimodal form with the first peak in mid to late June and the second peak in mid to late September. The two peaks were separated between mid and late August, showing a valley. Accumulated degree‐days predicted that the emergence of the second generation adults could be possible just before the second peak. But actually no adults of the second generation occurred in the field development experiments of M. alternatus in 2016 and 2017. Pine trees without oleoresin flow (namely dying trees by the infection of pinewood nematode) were abundant during early July to early August. The bimodal adult activity pattern of M. alternatus could be partially explained by the competitive attractiveness of dying trees against pheromone traps, when we accepted the assumption that dying pine trees attract strongly M. alternatus.  相似文献

Among ladybirds, diapause has evidently been most studied in Coccinella septempunctata L. adults. Coccinella septempunctata (C‐7), the seven spot, has attracted attention both in Europe and the USA for being heterogeneous as to the induction of diapause. A polyphenic character of diapause is a prominent feature in C. septempunctata and this phenomenon generally and often generates voltinism heterogeneity within populations. A greater part of the C‐7 population shows an obligatory univoltine cycle, whereas a smaller proportion is facultatively polyvoltine. Coccinella s. bruckii in Japan is bivoltine, in which the first generation of adults aestivate while the second generation hibernates. This paper reviews this heterodynamic cycle and its importance in the life history of C‐7, as reported from different regions of the world. Heterogeneous voltinism and diapause smooth the progress of a portion of C‐7 populations to take benefit of aphids well into late summer and autumn. Understanding such variation and plasticity in the life history of this species can help in organizing proper biological control attempts using it as a biocontrol agent.  相似文献

From southeastern Queensland to southern Victoria, over a transect of 11° latitude, the Moreton taxon of the Australian grasshopper Caledia captiva exhibits a cline in chromosome structure that involves change from a metacentric to an acrocentric genome. In this study, we show that embryonic development time covaries with chromosome structure along the transect. Both development time and chromosome short arm length exhibit an overall negative correlation with latitude, but with maxima just south of the northern limit of the taxon's distribution. Selection for such a pattern appears to arise from changes in voltinism along the cline in season length that exists along the transect. Populations with the highest temperature thresholds for avoidance of embryonic diapause also have the slowest development time and probably represent the northern extreme of a primarily univoltine life cycle. North of this region bivoltinism increases in frequency and, as expected from a split of the season length, development time decreases. Maximum chromosome short arm length occurs in the vicinity of the northern univoltine populations, rather than at the limit of distribution where bivoltinism prevails. We conclude that variation in chromosome structure could be contributing to the heritable variation for development time that forms the basis for adaptive change in this trait. These results provide justification for investigating causal relationships between chromosome structure and development time, with an ultimate aim of understanding the adaptive significance of chromosomal variation in C. captiva.  相似文献

Patterns of genetic and morphometric differentiation were surveyed in Melitaea (Mellicta) athalia populations of the Carpathian Basin. This species has a wide distribution and exists under a wide variety of ecological conditions. It has two ecotypes in Hungary: with either one or two broods per year. It is of particular interest to reveal the main factors driving differentiation patterns in this species. Samples in our study were obtained from five Hungarian and one Transylvanian (Romanian) regions. Enzyme polymorphism, wing characters and male external genitalia were analysed using traditional morphometric methods. Statistical methods were optimized to compare morphological and genetic data. The results of genetic surveys revealed a clear regional pattern of differentiation in M. athalia. Moreover, the results of principal component analysis, Bayesian clustering and the dendrogram all suggested that the regions can be classified into two groups corresponding to the East or West zones of the Carpathian Basin. In contrast, differentiation between the two ecotypes was less expressed in the genetic variation of M. athalia. Results of the analyses conducted on phenotypic variation also suggested a regional pattern for both sets of morphometric characters (wings and external genitalia). At the same time, neither East–West regional division nor ecotype differentiation was detected in the morphometric studies. Many species, particularly insects, pass through a series of distinct phases during their life history, with the developmental timing directed towards appropriate resources. Any factor that creates variation in developmental timing may partition a population into discrete populations-or 'cohorts'. Where there is continued failure to recruit outside the natal cohort then alternate cohorts will have their own internal dynamics, eventually leading to independent demographic and evolutionary trajectories. By contrast, continued variation in development rates within a cohort-cohort splitting-may homogenise otherwise independent demographic units. Using a panel of 14 microsatellite loci, we quantify the genetic signature of apparent demographic isolation between coexisting, but alternate, semivoltine cohorts of the damselfly Coenagrion mercuriale at locations that span its distribution in the UK. We find consistently low levels of genetic divergence between sympatric cohorts of C. mercuriale, indicative of developmental plasticity during the larval stage (unregulated development) whereby some individuals complete their development outside the predominant 2-year (semivoltine) period. Thus, individuals that alter their developmental rate successfully recruit to a different cohort. Despite maintaining contrasting population sizes, gene flow between alternate cohorts broadly is sufficient to place them on a similar evolutionary trajectory and also buffers against loss of genetic diversity. Such flexible larval development permits a response to local conditions and may facilitate response to environmental change.  相似文献

The voltinism of the bruchid Kytorhinus sharpianus Bridwell (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) and the phenology of its host plant Sophora flavescens Aiton (Leguminosae) were observed at four latitudes: Aomori (40°46' N), Obanazawa (38°37' N), Kujiranami (37°21' N) and Mitsuma (36°05' N) in northeastern Honshu (Japan). Kytorhinus sharpianus life cycle ranged from bivoltine and partially trivoltine in the south to univoltine and partially bivoltine in the north. Sophora flavescens started growing later in spring at higher latitudes. However, the relative growth rate was higher in the north (Aomori) than in the south (Mitsuma). In parallel with this, the first-generation of adult K. sharpianus appeared later at higher latitudes. When the four local populations were reared at 24 °C, L16:D8 and 65% r.h., males developed faster than females. The mean developmental time showed a saw-toothed latitudinal cline. The reversion in the latitudinal trend of variation corresponded to the change in the major type of life cycles from univoltine to bivoltine. Two heat units throughout the year and post-fruiting period were calculated as the sums of degree-days above the developmental threshold (12 °C) of K. sharpianus. Both heat units decreased in parallel with each other with increasing latitude. The greater growth rate of hosts in the northern population compensated for the smaller heat units. In addition, when the heat units were divided by the degree-days needed to complete development, the numerical value was the approximate number of generations observed in each locality.  相似文献

The aim of this paper was to study the life cycle, the annual secondary production, and the spatial and temporal variation of the species Campsurus truncatus and C. violaceus in two reservoirs in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Campsurus truncatus was recorded in 11 months and had a multivoltine lifecycle with a secondary production of 4.61 g.m?2.year?1. Campsurus violaceus was collected in eight months and had a bivoltine lifecycle with a secondary productivity of 1.96 g.m?2.year?1.  相似文献

1 Facultative diapause permits insects to initiate an additional generation when conditions are favourable, or to enter diapause when they are not. Although the principle environmental cues for diapause induction are often temperature and photoperiod, we demonstrated recently that the quality of host plant consumed by the larvae of Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) influences the proportion of larvae that enter diapause and therefore voltinism. 2 Previous work has also suggested that non‐Mendelian parental effects influence diapause by C. rosaceana larvae, but the mechanism was not established. Here, we report further evidence for parental effects on diapause and examine whether parental diet influences diapause induction. 3 We collected larvae of C. rosaceana from six sites at three latitudes in the Province of Québec. There was an increase in the proportion of larvae entering diapause with increasing latitude. Rearing larvae under identical conditions on artificial diet for two generations significantly reduced variation in diapause among populations within a given latitude, and supported the existence of parental effects that influence offspring diapause. 4 Experiments with different host plants and high‐ vs. low‐quality artificial diets provided no evidence that the parental effects on offspring diapause were based on the quality of food consumed by parents. Diapause in C. rosaceana appears influenced by a hierarchy of cues, including temperature, photoperiod, current larval diet and parental environment.  相似文献
