White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is widely distributed in the Appalachian region, except on highly acid soils. We used a procedure where a thin layer of soil is placed on top of solidified water agar to characterize effects of acid soil on seedling root growth. Our objectives were to evaluate the soil-on-agar technique by using four soils (non-limed and limed) with diverse chemical characteristics and to relate root emergence to the chemical properties of the soils. We used three white clover cultivars, Grasslands Huia, Grasslands Tahora and Sacramento. Daily counts of root emergence from soil into agar were made for 12 d. Liming hastened white clover root emergence in three of the four soils. Days to 40% emergence were closely related (P < 0.01) to soil pH
and to species of soil solution Al that are associated with Al toxicity in dicotyledonous plants. The r2 values for the regression of days to 40% root emergence on
were 0.95, 0.96, 0.94 and 0.96, respectively. Apparently, the primary factor responsible for delayed root emergence in the soil-on-agar procedure was Al toxicity. Because of the close relationship between root emergence and activity of toxic species of soil solution Al, we propose that the soil-on-agar technique should be useful for characterizing the response of many small-seeded species to Al. 相似文献

Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) affecting body weight were investigated in the backcross population derived from nondiabetic
BB/OK and spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) strains. The F1 hybrids were backcrossed onto SHR rats, and QTL analysis was performed separately with the resulting backcross populations
for each sex on Chromosomes (Chrs) 1, 3, 4, 10, 13, and 18. The body weight was determined at the age of 14 weeks, and the
statistical analysis was performed with MAPMAKER/QTL 1.1b computer program. According to the stringent threshold for a lod
score of 3.0, markers on Chr 1 were found to be linked with body weight. The QTL with a peak lod score (5.1) on Chr 1 for
a male population was located within markers Igf2 and D1Mgh12. In contrast, in the female population the body weight affecting QTL (lod = 5.7) on Chr 1 was located between the D1Mit3 and Lsn markers. The existence of QTLs on Chr 1 affecting body weight in the male population was confirmed by congenic BB.Sa rats,

We recently reported that CYP2D16, a xenobiotic-metabolizing P450 isozyme, was expressed at higher levels in adrenal microsomes from inbred Strain 13 guinea pigs than in those from outbred English Short Hair (ESH) animals. Studies were done to determine if there also were strain differences in adrenal microsomal steroid metabolism. In both inner (zona reticularis) and outer (zona fasciculata plus zona glomerulosa) zone preparations of the adrenal cortex, 21-hydroxylase activities were greater in microsomes from ESH than from Strain 13 guinea pigs. By contrast, 17-hydroxylase activities were similar in the two strains. In both strains, 21-hydroxylase activities were greater in inner than outer zone microsomes, but the opposite was found for 17-hydroxylase activities (outer>inner). Northern and Western analyses revealed higher levels of CYP21 mRNA and protein in adrenals from ESH than Strain 13 guinea pigs, but there were no strain differences in CYP17 mRNA or protein concentrations. Despite the zonal differences in adrenal 17-hydroxylase and 21-hydroxylase activities, CYP17 and CYP21 mRNA and protein levels were similar in the inner and outer zones within each strain of guinea pig. The results demonstrate strain differences in microsomal steroid metabolism that are explained by differences in CYP21 expression. By contrast, the zonal differences in steroid hydroxylase activities may be attributable to post-translational mechanisms. 相似文献

Most songbirds learn their songs from adult tutors, who can be their father or other male conspecifics. However, the variables that control song learning in a natural social context are largely unknown. We investigated whether the time of hatching of male domesticated canaries has an impact on their song development and on the neuroendocrine parameters of the song control system. Average age difference between early- and late-hatched males was 50 days with a maximum of 90 days. Song activity of adult tutor males decreased significantly during the breeding season. While early-hatched males were exposed to tutor songs for on average the first 99 days, late-hatched peers heard adult song only during the first 48 days of life. Remarkably, although hatching late in the season negatively affected body condition, no differences between both groups of males were found in song characteristics either in autumn or in the following spring. Similarly, hatching date had no effect on song nucleus size and circulating testosterone levels. Our data suggest that late-hatched males must have undergone accelerated song development. Furthermore, the limited tutor song exposure did not affect adult song organization and song performance. 相似文献

Foraging behaviour of bats is supposedly largely influenced by the high costs of flapping flight. Yet our understanding of
flight energetics focuses mostly on continuous horizontal forward flight at intermediate speeds. Many bats, however, perform
manoeuvring flights at suboptimal speeds when foraging. For example, members of the genus Rhinolophus hunt insects during short sallying flights from a perch. Such flights include many descents and ascents below minimum power
speed and are therefore considered energetically more expensive than flying at intermediate speed. To test this idea, we quantified
the energy costs of short manoeuvring flights (<2 min) using the Na-bicarbonate technique in two Rhinolophus species that differ in body mass but have similar wing shapes. First, we hypothesized that, similar to birds, energy costs
of short flights should be higher than predicted by an equation derived for bats at intermediate speeds. Second, we predicted
that R. mehelyi encounters higher flight costs than R. euryale, because of its higher wing loading. Although wing loading of R. mehelyi was only 20% larger than that of R. euryale, its flight costs (2.61 ± 0.75 W; mean ± 1 SD) exceeded that of R. euryale (1.71 ± 0.37 W) by 50%. Measured flight costs were higher than predicted for R. mehelyi, but not for R. euryale. We conclude that R. mehelyi face elevated energy costs during short manoeuvring flights due to high wing loading and thus may optimize foraging efficiency

2‐DE reference maps for Deinococcus geothermalis cytosolic and cell envelope proteomes were constructed. In total, 403 spots were identified as 299 different proteins. Unique in the proteomes were four subunits of V‐type ATPase and Deinococcus specific proteins constituting one‐fourth of cell envelope proteome. The cytoplasmic proteome included enzymes of the central carbon metabolism, chaperones, enzymes of protein and DNA repair, and oxidative stress. A total of 34 abundant proteins with unknown function may relate to the extreme stress tolerance of D. geothermalis. 相似文献
