In a search for alternatives to the former standard aldrin compost incorporation treatment for control of vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) larvae on container-grown hardy ornamental nursery stock, a series of 87 tests of insecticides were done at four experimental centres of the ADAS (Leeds, Reading, Wolverhampton and Wye) from 1986 to 1989. Insecticidally-treated plants and untreated controls were artificially infested with vine weevil eggs at varying intervals before and after treatment, and the survival of the pest was assessed. Aldrin treatment gave consistent and excellent preventive control of vine weevil larvae for over 2 years. Of the candidate materials tested, a slow-release granular formulation of chlorpyrifos incorporated into compost at a dose rate of 100 g a.i. m-3 of compost gave good control for up to 34 wk after treatment (the longest period evaluated) and a micro-encapsulated slow release formulation of fonofos incorporated at a dose rate of 43.3 g a.i. m-3 usually gave good control for up to two years (the longest period evaluated). Surface applications of these two organophosphates or of carbofuran granules, though sometimes effective, were unreliable as either preventive or remedial treatments even for short term control.  相似文献

In a bioassay, leachate from composted household waste was found to decrease both cress germination and the germination of barley and six arable weeds, especially in the light. The effect of compost depth upon the emergence of these species was examined in a glasshouse experiment. Compost had no significant effect on barley emergence. However, weed emergence, particularly of those with small seeds, was reduced greatly by the physical effect of compost and, to a lesser extent, by its chemical effect. The emergence of the large-seeded species was relatively unaffected by increasing depths of compost, whereas that of the smaller-seeded weeds steadily decreased, being almost completely prevented by a 3 cm layer. The use of compost to control arable weeds in the field is discussed.  相似文献

Water extracts of the compost produced from activated sludge and coffee residue were found to be selectively inhibitory to seed germination of some legumes. Germination rate of white clover (Trifolium repens L.), red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seeds were reduced to 2, 29 and 73% of the control, respectively, by water extracts of the compost (20 g l–1). However, the extracts did not show any inhibition to seed germination of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench), African millet (Eleusine coracana Gaertn.), and Komatsuna (Brassica rapa L.) at the same concentration. The inhibitors in the compost extracts were separated by ion-exchange chromatography and reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the inhibitory activities of seed germination were tested with white clover seeds. Five inhibitors were isolated and identified as 3,4-dichlorophenylacetic acid (3,4-DCP), 3,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (3,4-DCB), 3,4,5-trichlorophenylacetic acid, 3,4,5-trichlorobenzoic acid and mono-2-ethylhexylphthalate by 1H-, 13C-NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The inhibitory activities of some authentic chemicals of the inhibitors and the related compounds were compared. The results indicated that the main inhibitor in the compost could be 3,4-DCB, which was contained at the concentration of 6.58 mg kg–1 compost and showed the strongest inhibitory effect on seed germination of white clover among the tested compounds.  相似文献

A sequential extraction procedure was employed to determine the soil fractions, and assess plant availability of Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in a Glynwood silt loam amended with five rates (0, 30, 60, 120 and 240 metric tons/ha) of composted municipal solid waste (CMSW) or composted sewage sludge (CSS) cropped to oats (Avena sativa). The application of the composts tended to shift the solid phase forms of the metals away from those extractable with HNO3 to those extractable with NaOH and EDTA. The more labile fractions (KNO3 and H2O extracts) of the metals typically decreased with application of CMSW and CSS. Crop dry matter increased at the 30 and 60 MT/ha CMSW rates by 142 and 152%, respectively, after which yields declined to below control values. Yields at all rates of CSS declined. The CMSW and CSS had an insignificant effect on concentrations of Cr and Pb in oat tissue, but tissue levels of Cu, Ni and Zn increased with increased rate of compost application.  相似文献

On a study site in the Lusatian lignite mining region (Germany), sandy mine spoil was ameliorated with either sewage sludge, compost or mineral fertilizer. Plots were sown with the grass Secale multicaule and planted with pine seedlings except for a control that was not meliorated and not revegetated. Pitfall catches of ground beetles in 1996/97 yielded high numbers of species and individuals directly after revegetation. The dominant beetles were xerophilic species, known to prefer open sandy sites. Catches in different plots were positively correlated with the amount of vegetation cover and declined as follows: amelioration with sewage sludge > compost > mineral fertilizer > untreated control. Even beetles characteristic of open sandy sites showed a distinct preference for plots with high vegetation cover treated with organic waste. For the dominant species, an attraction to shelter and a more balanced, humid microclimate is assumed. A year-to-year comparison showed an increase in beetles typical of dry grasslands and ruderal sites in the second year, while characteristic species of open sandy sites decreased. Application of organic waste combined with revegetation led to an immediate increase in beetle numbers. In the long term, revegetation would be expected to reduce suitable habitats for endangered ground beetles which prefer open sites with poor sandy soils. In sesquioxide-rich soils of tropical and subtropical areas and volcanic-ash soils with high levels of active Al(Fe), large amounts of phosphate fertilizers are needed to overcome their high P-fixation capacity (quenching strategy). A greenhouse pot experiment has been used to evaluate the effectiveness of city refuse compost (CRC) as a P-source for these variable-charge soils, compared to inorganic P. Mature CRC and K2HPO4 were applied at rates equivalent to 125, 250, 375, 500 and 625 kg P ha–1 to a ferrallitic soils from Tenerife Island (Andeptic Paleudult) with a high content in active Al+Fe (4.82%) and a high P-fixation capacity (87%). Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) was grown in pots and plants were harvested at regular intervals after seedling emergence. CRC increases plant P concentration and soil labile-P proportional to the applied rate. The best results were obtained from a compost application of 30 t ha–1 equivalent-rate, after a residence time of at least three months. An important residual effect in the supply capacity of P in relation to the phosphate fertilizer was also observed. The relative agronomic effectiveness (RAE) in comparison to K2HPO4 was 66% after 6 months, considering P uptake + soil labile-P. The soil P-fixation capacity was significantly reduced from a compost application of 40 t ha–1 equivalent-rate. Competition in adsorption between organic ligands and phosphate, in combination with net mineralization of organic P in compost, might account for the high RAE value obtained. The main conclusion is that the city refuse compost could be a suitable P-amendment for resquioxic soils due to its high RAE, and the residual effect on P-supply. ei]H. Lambers  相似文献

Thermophilic microbial communities that are active in a high-solids environment offer great potential for the discovery of industrially relevant enzymes that efficiently deconstruct bioenergy feedstocks. In this study, finished green waste compost was used as an inoculum source to enrich microbial communities and associated enzymes that hydrolyze cellulose and hemicellulose during thermophilic high-solids fermentation of the bioenergy feedstocks switchgrass and corn stover. Methods involving the disruption of enzyme and plant cell wall polysaccharide interactions were developed to recover xylanase and endoglucanase activity from deconstructed solids. Xylanase and endoglucanase activity increased by more than a factor of 5, upon four successive enrichments on switchgrass. Overall, the changes for switchgrass were more pronounced than for corn stover; solids reduction between the first and second enrichments increased by a factor of four for switchgrass while solids reduction remained relatively constant for corn stover. Amplicon pyrosequencing analysis of small-subunit ribosomal RNA genes recovered from enriched samples indicated rapid changes in the microbial communities between the first and second enrichment with the simplified communities achieved by the third enrichment. The results demonstrate a successful approach for enrichment of unique microbial communities and enzymes active in a thermophilic high-solids environment.  相似文献

AIMS: The biopesticide effect of four green composts against fusarium wilt in melon plants and the effect of soil quality in soils amended with composts were assayed. METHODS AND RESULTS: The composts consisted of pruning wastes, with or without addition of coffee wastes (3/1 and 4/1, dry wt/dry wt) or urea (1000/1, dry wt/dry wt). In vitro experiments suggested the biopesticide effect of the composts against Fusarium oxysporum, while only the compost of pine bark and urea (1000/1dry wt/dry wt) had an abiotic effect. Melon plant growth with composts and F. oxysporum was one to four times greater than in the non-amended soil, although there was no significant decrease in the level of the F. oxysporum in the soil. The addition of composts to the soil also improved its biological quality, as assessed by microbiological and biochemical parameters: ATP and hydrolases involved in the P (phosphatase), C (beta-glucosidase) and N (urease) cycles. CONCLUSIONS: Green composts had greater beneficial characteristics, improved plant growth and controlled fusarium wilt in melon plants. These composts improve the soil quality of semi-arid agricultural soils. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Biotic and abiotic factors from composts have been tested as responsible of their biopesticide activity against fusarium wilt.  相似文献

AIMS: To evaluate the ammonia-assimilating abilities of micro-organisms isolated from cattle manure composting processes and to determine the distribution of cultivable species of ammonia-assimilating micro-organisms in microbial communities during the composting processes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Compost samples were collected from four stages of treatment. Trypto soya agar was used for the isolation of ammonia-assimilating aerobes. Many of the isolates showed high ammonia-assimilating ability in a medium containing basal components and a compost extract. Partial 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing showed that the cultivable species of highly efficient ammonia-assimilating isolates changed during the composting process. The community structure of micro-organisms and actinomycetes was analysed by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE). Two species of actinomycetes identified by PCR-DGGE coincided with those found among the cultured isolates. CONCLUSIONS: Ammonia-assimilating micro-organisms obtained by the cultivation method were not predominant in the microbial community during the composting process: however certain cultured actinomycetes were members of predominant species in the actinomycetes community. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Ammonia assimilation by micro-organisms is one of the important mechanisms for ammonia retention in the composting process. Cultivable actinomycetes are a means for preventing ammonia emission from the composting process.  相似文献

We investigated the in vitro influence of humic substances (HS) extracted from de-inking paper sludge compost on the inhibition of Pythium ultimum by two compost bacteria, Rhizobium radiobacter (Agrobacterium radiobacter) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. When low concentrations (5 or 50 mg l(-1)) of HS were added to the culture medium, fungal inhibition by R. radiobacter significantly increased (P<0.01) by 2-3%. In contrast, these low levels of HS had no effect on P. ultimum inhibition by P. aeruginosa. The Fe, chelated by HS, was in part responsible for the decrease of P. ultimum inhibition by the bacteria when increasing amounts of HS were added in the culture medium. The addition of 500 mg l(-1) of humic acids isolated from de-inking paper sludge compost or from fossil origin completely eliminated the inhibition of P. ultimum by R. radiobacter. This Fe effect also stimulated growth of R. radiobacter and reduced its siderophore production in a minimal medium supplemented with HS as sole source of Fe. The results showed that HS influence microbial antagonism when added to a culture medium. However, this effect varies with different factors such as the type of bacteria, concentration of HS, molecular weight and Fe content.  相似文献
