Hepatic Na+-K+-ATPase and Mg2+-ATPase activities of male green lizards declined during the maturation phase (juvenile to 1-year-old) and stabilized thereafter. On the other hand, the Ca2+-ATPase activity of the liver declined during the later half of the life span (1-year-old to 2–4-year-old). Starvation stress induced a decline in hepatic Na+-K+-ATPase and Mg2+-ATPase activities of juvenile lizards and caused an increase in 1-year-old and 2–4-year-old counterparts. The Ca2+-ATPase activity declined only in starved 1-year-old lizards. Following cold stress, the hepatic Na+-K+-ATPase activity of juvenile lizards showed a higher degree of decline than 2–4-year-old counterparts. The Mg2+-ATPase activity declined in cold-stressed juvenile lizards, but the parameter was elevated in similarly treated 1-year-old lizards. On the other hand, the increase in Ca2+-ATPase activity in response to cold stress was confined only to 2–4-year-old lizards.  相似文献

The composition of tissue and membrane fatty acids in ectothermic vertebrates is influenced by both temperature acclimation and diets. If such change in body lipid composition and thermal physiology were linked, a diet-induced change in body lipid composition should result in a change in thermal physiology. We therefore investigated whether the selected body temperature of the agamid lizardAmphibolurus nuchalis (body mass 20 g) is influenced by the lipid composition of dietary fatty acids and whether diet-induced changes in thermal physiology are correlated with changes in body lipid composition. The selected body temperature in two groups of lizards was indistinguishable before dietary treatments. The selected body temperature in lizards after 3 weeks on a diet rich in saturated fatty acids rose by 2.1 °C (photophase) and 3.3 °C (scotophase), whereas the body temperature of lizards on a diet rich in unsaturated fatty acids fell by 1.5 °C (photophase) and 2.0 °C (scotophase). Significant diet-induced differences were observed in the fatty acid composition of depot fat, liver and muscle. These observations suggest that dietary lipids may influence selection of body temperature in ectotherms via alterations of body lipid composition.Abbreviations bm body mass - FA fatty acid(s) - MUFA monounsaturated fatty acids - PUFA polyunsaturated fatty acids - SFA saturated fatty acids - T a air temperature - T b body temperature - UFA unsaturated fatty acids  相似文献

Summary Thermal selection by collared lizards (Crotaphytus collaris) and chuckawallas (Sauromalus obesus) was studied in continuously operating laboratory thermal gradients in a 12L12D photoperiod in spring-summer. In both species, selected temperatures above the median were higher during the day than at night. Below the median selected temperature, however, nighttime temperature significantly exceeded daytime temperature in chuckawallas but not in collared lizards. Pinealectomized collared lizards selected significantly lower temperatures than sham-operated or intact controls. This effect was most pronounced at night. Pinealectomy had no effect on the temperatures selected by chuckawallas. The significance of these results is discussed in relation to the seasonal life-history strategy of these two species.  相似文献

Summary The hypothalamic nuclei of the lizard, Calotes versicolor, can be broadly divided into AF-positive and AF-negative. The AF-positive cell complexes include the nucleus supraopticus, nucleus paraventricularis, and a few interconnecting bridge cells. In addition, some AF-positive neurones are also observed in the median eminence. As many as 15 AF-negative nuclei-like accumulations of nerve cells can be identified in the hypothalamus. The nucleus periventricularis hypothalami of earlier authors is subdivided into eight circumscribed neuronal complexes. In addition, a few AF-negative nuclei, e.g. nucleus subfornicalis, nucleus ventralis tuberis, nucleus med. recessus infundibuli, nucleus lat. recessus infundibuli and nucleus praemamillaris, are regarded for the first time as anatomical entities. The distribution of the hypothalamic nuclei and their cytoarchitectonic features are described at the light microscopical level. An attempt has been made to interprete the nuclei identified in the present study on a comparative and phylogenetic basis.Dedicated to Professors W. Bargmann and B. Locomotor activity performance of reptiles is largely temperature dependent and, in harsh environments with short activity periods during the day and throughout the year, plays a vital role in the fitness of the species. This particular study focuses on the performance and the thermal sensitivity for running, at different body temperatures, of the two southernmost species of lizards in the world, Liolaemus sarmientoi and Liolaemus magellanicus, studied at two locations in the south of Santa Cruz province, Argentina (51°S, 70°W and 50°S, 72°W; 133 m asl). The speed of sprint and long runs was measured in the field to determine the physiological performance of lizards at different air temperatures. In both species speed increases with the temperature, and they reach the highest performance at high temperatures. The difference between activity and thermal optima suggests that L. magellanicus has colonized its actual environment recently, and that it has not had enough time for its physiological mechanisms to evolve and achieve a maximum performance at the cold temperatures they have to tolerate at present. In contrast, L. sarmientoi achieved a high performance over a wider range of temperatures that included temperatures lower than the preferred temperatures in the lab, which they can generally find in their environment.

The Australian scincid lizard Egernia stokesii lives in social groups and is infected with two nematode species: Pharyngodon tiliquae and Thelandros trachysauri. This study asked whether those nematodes affected levels of lizard activity in field populations. In a laboratory colony, application of a combination of ivermectin and fenbendazole reduced nematode egg count in lizard scats after 12 weeks. In the field, the same doses of those antihelminthic drugs were applied to lizards in six social groups across three populations, and a saline control was given to lizards in six adjacent groups. Observations showed significant changes in behaviour between the two groups developing over 2 months. Drug-treated lizards spent more time basking and moved about for longer times during observation sessions. The results suggest that nematode infection altered host behaviour and reduced fitness. No influence of social group size was detected on the impact of parasitic nematodes.  相似文献

Historically, Australia has been important in the study of, and the development of hypotheses aimed at understanding, the evolution of viviparity in amniote vertebrates. Part of the importance of Australia in the field results from a rich fauna of skinks, including one of the broadest ranges of diversity of placental structures within one geographic region. During the last decade, we have focussed our studies on one lineage, the Eugongylus group of skinks of the subfamily Lygosominae because it contains oviparous species and some that exhibit complex placentae. Our specific objective has been to attempt to understand the fundamental steps required when viviparity, and ultimately complex placentae, evolve from oviparous ancestors. We have taken a three-prong approach: (1) detailed study of the morphology and ontogeny of the placentae of key species at the light microscope level; (2) study of changes in the uterus associated with pregnancy, or the plasma membrane transformation; and (3) measures of the net exchange of nutrients across the placenta or eggshell of key species. In turn, we have found that: (1) details of the morphology and ontogeny of placentae are more complex that originally envisaged, and that the early conclusions about a sequence in the evolution of complex placentae was naïve; (2) a plasma membrane transformation occurs in viviparous, but not oviparous lizards, and thus may be a fundamental feature of the evolution of viviparity in amniotes; and (3) species with more complex chorioallantoic placentae tend to transport more nutrients across the placenta during pregnancy than those with simpler chorioallantoic placentae but, because the correlation is not tight, the importance of the omphaloplacenta in transporting nutrients may have been overlooked. Also, the composition of yolk of highly matrotrophic species is broadly similar, but not identical, to the yolk of oviparous species. Some of the interpretation of our data within the context of our specific objective is not yet possible, pending the publication of a robust phylogeny of Eugongylus group skinks. Once such a phylogeny is available, we are in a position to propose specific hypotheses about the evolution of viviparity that can be tested using another lineage of amniotes, possibly Mabuya group skinks.  相似文献

Most studies on chitinase activity in lizards have been concerned with Palaearctic (European) and Laurasian (Middle Eastern and Asian) taxa. Several genera of Old World lizards, Anguis, Uromastix, Chamaeleo and Lacerta, have been shown to possess chitinolytic activity. To date, only one New World lizard, Anolis carolinensis, has been reported to exhibit chitinolytic activity. In the present study, chitinase activity was characterized in a second New World taxon, Sceloporus undulatus garmani, a New World, phrynosomatid lizard. Chitinolytic activity was measured by incubating tissue extracts with a radioactive chitin substrate, acetyl-[H3]chitin and determining acid soluble radioactivity as an estimate for chitin hydrolysis. Chitinolytic activity was present in stomach, small intestine and pancreas extracts, with the stomach and pancreas having the highest specific activities. Chitinolytic activity was higher at pH 4.5 than at pH 7.5. The stomach chitinase is immunologically similar to the gastric chitinase previously described for rainbow trout. Western blot analysis showed anti-chitinase cross-reactivity in the extracts of the stomach, but no cross-reactivity in the pancreatic or intestinal extracts, suggesting different isoforms of chitinase. There was no detected lysozyme activity (less than 0.01 mg/ml lysozyme) present in the extracts of the stomach, small intestine and pancreas. The localization of chitinolytic activity in S. u. garmani is in agreement with earlier reptilian reports on the distribution of chitinase.  相似文献

1. 1.Laceria vivipara were hibernated from October to March. Respiration rates were measured at various times during this period and compared with respiration rates of lizards at the same temperatures in July.

2. 2.Rates of respiration at 10°C soon after entry into hibernation and towards the end of the dormant period did not differ significantly from rates at 10°C in July.

3. 3.After several weeks in hibernation at 10°C a depression of metabolism occurred which produced acclimated respiration rates significantly lowe than 10°C rates measured at other times of year. This is interpreted as a probable case of negative metabolic compensation to temperature (inverse acclimation).

4. 4.No difference in respiration rates at 5°C could be detected between dormant and summer lizards.

5. 5.Energy expenditure during winter dormancy accounts for approximately 5% of the energy assimilated annually from food. Inverse acclimation at 10°C effects an energy saving amounting to about 35% of the total dormancy expenditure.
