Birds encounter climate at the scale of microclimates that can vary rapidly in time and space and so understanding potential vulnerability and adaptations to those microclimates requires fine‐scale measurements that accurately track thermal exposures. However, few options exist for recording the microclimates actually experienced by birds (realized microclimates). We constructed and tested a simple, low‐cost, temperature logger for recording the realized microclimates of ground‐nesting birds. We developed attachment protocols for band‐mounting Thermochron iButtons on Ring‐billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) chicks. We tested these mounted, temperature‐logging devices on 20 chicks weighing > 200 g (device weight was 4 g), attaching devices for 48 h and observing behavior before and after attachment and removal. Devices recorded temperature immediately surrounding the leg at 2‐min intervals. Recorded temperatures were strong predictors of observed thermoregulatory behaviors (panting and sitting), outperforming predictions based on air temperatures measured by basic, static approaches. Through comparison with matched controls (chicks with just a band), we detected no adverse physiological effects of devices, no effects on social or feeding behavior, and only a short‐term decrease in inactivity immediately after device attachment (likely due to increased preening). By attaching iButtons to the legs of birds, we quantified realized thermal exposure, integrating air temperature, modes of environmental heat transfer, and bird behavior at microclimatic scales. Although not yet validated for broader use, our approach (including possible miniaturization) should be suitable to measure thermal exposure of adults, not just chicks, allowing collection of data concerning thermal exposures during flight under field conditions. At ~ $25 USD per device, our approach facilitates experimental protocols with robust sample sizes, even for relatively modest budgets.  相似文献

Pseudoscorpiones (pseudoscorpions, false scorpions) is an order of small terrestrial chelicerates. While most chelicerates are lecithotrophic, that is, embryos develop due to nutrients (mostly yolk) deposited in the oocyte cytoplasm, pseudoscorpions are matrotrophic, that is, embryos are nourished by the female. Pseudoscorpion oocytes contain only a small amount of yolk. The embryos develop within a brood sac carried on the abdominal site of the female and absorb nutrients by a pumping organ. It is believed that in pseudoscorpions nutrients for developing embryos are produced in the ovary during a postovulatory (secretory) phase of the ovarian cycle. The goal of our study was to analyze the structure of the female reproductive system during the secretory phase in the pseudoscorpion Chelifer cancroides, a representative of the family Cheliferidae, considered to be one of the most advanced pseudoscorpion taxa. We use diverse microscopic techniques to document that the nutritive fluid is produced not only in the ovaries but also by the epithelial cells in the oviducts. The secretory active epithelial cells are hypertrophic and polyploid and release their content by fragmentation of apical parts. Our observations also indicate that fertilization occurs in the oviducts. Moreover, in contrast to previous findings, we show that secretion of the nutritive material starts when the fertilized oocytes reach the brood sac and thus precedes formation of the pumping organ. Summing up, we show that C. cancroides exhibits traits of advanced adaptations for matrotrophy due to coordinated secretion of the nutritive fluid by the ovarian and oviductal epithelial cells, which substantially increases the efficiency of nutritive fluid formation. Since the secretion of nutrients starts before formation of the pumping organ, we suggest that the embryos are able to absorb the nutritive fluid also in the early embryonic stages.  相似文献

Summary The construction and response of a novel biosensor for urea are described. This sensor utilizes a layer of jack bean meal immobilized at the surface of an ammonia gassensing probe. West European Rock lizards, Lacerta (Iberolacerta) have small widely separated ranges in highland areas. Mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences corroborate the monophyly of the group and show it is not closely related to any of the other Rock lizards with which it was formerly placed in Archaeolacerta, an assemblage for which there is no evidence of clade status. L. (Iberolacerta) consists of four main units: L. (I.) horvathi of NW Croatia and neighbouring regions; the Pyrenees species, L. (I.) bonnali, L. (I.) aranica and L. (I.) aurelioi; L. (I.) cyreni of the Iberian Sistema Central, with distinctive populations in the Sierras de Bejar, Gredos and Guadarrama; and L. (I.) monticola of the Serra da Estrela of Central Portugal and NW Spain, this unit also contains L. (I.) cyrenimartinezricai of La Peña de Francia, W. Spain and a distinctive population in the Montañas de Sanabria. L. (Iberolacerta) has persisted in some mountain ranges for at least 4.2 ± 1.4 Ma and may have been restricted to mountains by competition from Wall lizards (Podarcis). Its clade status shows it has lost range extensively and has produced few external branches since its initial fragmentation. In contrast, Podarcis diversified about the time L. (Iberolacerta) fragmented, producing a series of widespread lineages that have persisted until the present time. The mainly European subfamily Lacertinae, to which both L. (Iberolacerta) and Podarcis belong, diversified rapidly 13–9 Ma ago, probably largely replacing other lacertid lizards of earlier origin. As another round of replacement started at approximately 9 Ma ago with the spread of Podarcis, this may be a recurrent phenomenon in the evolution of some lizard communities.  相似文献

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency wetland regulators appear to use monetary estimates of the societal value of wetlands relatively infrequently in Section 404 permit review, enforcement, and compensatory mitigation-related activities. While 52 % of surveyed EPA regulators had used such estimates at least once, only 3 % reported using them frequently. Forty-eight percent said they never used them. Survey respondents indicated that their use of such estimates is inhibited by a lack of relevant information, uncertainty about the scientific validity of estimates, and concerns about the scientific and legal defensibility of estimate use. Respondents said they would be more apt to use estimates in regulatory activities if they perceived agency approval for such use and had access to training and best practices. The barriers and inducements EPA regulators cited largely accord with the literature on the science-policy divide and with the argument that regulatory use of valuation estimates may be inappropriate because research in this arena is not sufficiently advanced.  相似文献

The rulAB operon of Pseudomonas spp. confers fitness traits on the host and has been suggested to be a hotspot for insertion of mobile elements that carry avirulence genes. Here, for the first time, we show that rulB on plasmid pWW0 is a hotspot for the active site‐specific integration of related integron‐like elements (ILEs) found in six environmental pseudomonads (strains FH1–FH6). Integration into rulB on pWW0 occurred at position 6488 generating a 3 bp direct repeat. ILEs from FH1 and FH5 were 9403 bp in length and contained eight open reading frames (ORFs), while the ILE from FH4 was 16 233 bp in length and contained 16 ORFs. In all three ILEs, the first 5.1 kb (containing ORFs 1–4) were structurally conserved and contained three predicted site‐specific recombinases/integrases and a tetR homologue. Downstream of these resided ORFs of the ‘variable side’ with structural and sequence similarity to those encoding survival traits on the fitness enhancing plasmid pGRT1 (ILEFH1 and ILEFH5) and the NR‐II virulence region of genomic island PAGI‐5 (ILEFH4). Collectively, these ILEs share features with the previously described type III protein secretion system effector ILEs and are considered important to host survival and transfer of fitness enhancing and (a)virulence genes between bacteria.  相似文献
