The temperature‐dependent development of Aproceros leucopoda Takeuchi, 1939 (Hymenoptera: Argidae), an invasive pest of elms in Europe, was studied in the laboratory on Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) at six constant temperatures (10.9, 15.0, 19.5, 23.0, 24.3 and 27.0°C) and at a photoperiod of 16L:8D. The larvae of the species developed through 4–7 instars, and it was the 6th instar individuals of which continued their development at the highest rate. The developmental threshold (Tmin) and the thermal constant (K) were determined by the linear model and Lactin‐2 model for egg, larval, prepupal and pupal stages and one whole generation. The estimated values of Tmin and K by the two models for one generation were 7.3 and 7.1°C, and 426.5 and 432.7 degree‐days, respectively. Based on the survival and fecundity rates, the optimal temperature range for the species may be expected to be between 15.0 and 19.5°C. Allowing for the period of diapause, it was estimated that A. leucopoda might potentially develop through up to four or five generations per year in Hungary. These results may contribute to the better understanding of the biology of an invasive alien species in Europe.  相似文献

We used dendrochronological analyses to identify periods of natural disturbance and resulting growth responses in 32 mixed species stands in the Acadian forest. Stands represented five different development patterns, based upon 1946 softwood (SW) content (70–80%, termed SW versus 30–60%, termed mixedwood (MW)) and change in SW content from 1946 to 2006: SW-stable, SW-declining, MW-fluctuating, MW-stable, and MW-declining. Standardized growth chronologies were developed from 1163 increment cores sampled from balsam fir (Abies balsamea), red spruce (Picea rubens), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis), and sugar maple (Acer saccharum). Growth chronologies clearly identified three spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) outbreaks from 1914 to 1921, 1954 to 1961, and 1975 to 1984, and birch dieback from 1938 to 1948. Stand developmental patterns were caused by species characteristics and multiple interacting disturbances, resulting in mortality, growth reductions, releases, and establishment of new cohorts. Balsam fir was present in all stands, but its tendency to establish and release from advanced regeneration following budworm-caused mortality resulted in cyclical proportions of fir in the canopy. Red spruce was less vulnerable to spruce budworm and longer lived, allowing them to persist and better withstand disturbance. Periodic growth index values less than 0.9 for fir and spruce were correlated with mortality of softwoods caused by defoliation, which resulted in release and growth index values >1.1 for sugar maple. Our results demonstrated substantial variation in mixedwood development patterns over a 60-year period within a small (45 km) area.  相似文献

Beginning in the early 1990s, the balsam fir sawfly (Neodiprion abietis) became a significant defoliating insect of precommercially thinned balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) stands in western Newfoundland, Canada. In 1997, a nucleopolyhedrovirus (NeabNPV) was isolated from the balsam fir sawfly and, as no control measures were then available, NeabNPV was developed for the biological control of balsam fir sawfly. In order to register NeabNPV for operational use under the Canadian Pest Control Products Act, research was carried out in a number of areas including NeabNPV field efficacy, non-target organism toxicology, balsam fir sawfly ecology and impact on balsam fir trees, and NeabNPV genome sequencing and analysis. As part of the field efficacy trials, approximately 22 500 hectares of balsam fir sawfly-infested forest were aerially treated with NeabNPV between 2000 and 2005. NeabNPV was found to be safe, efficacious, and economical for the suppression of balsam fir sawfly outbreak populations. Conditional registration for the NeabNPV-based product, Abietiv(, was received from the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (Health Canada) in April 2006. In July 2006, Abietiv was applied by spray airplanes to 15 000 ha of balsam fir sawfly-infested forest in western Newfoundland in an operational control program.

Insect defoliation events are a major forest disturbance in the boreal forest in Canada. Reconstructing previous events are crucial to understanding natural factors that lead to insect defoliation periods, improving our ability to predict future infestations and increasing the reliability of forest management plans and pest control programs. Researchers have often been limited in their ability to draw accurate conclusions regarding the history of larch sawfly (Pristiphora erichsonii (Hartig)) infestation events in North America. It is well known that floods can affect survival of larch sawfly populations, as well as suppress radial growth of eastern larch (Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch) trees. Eastern larch often inhabits peatlands where high water-table levels can lead to a decrease in tree-ring widths. Water-table level increases result in similar radial-growth patterns to when trees are defoliated by larch sawfly, making accurate diagnoses of larch sawfly events a challenge. This fact becomes more accentuated when non-host species used for standard dendroecological analyses (often black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton) present an opposite relationship to water-table variability, enhancing chances of drawing erroneous conclusions when using program OUTBREAK.This paper introduces a novel case study to advance the understanding of the complex landscapes where these larch sawfly events are taking place. It stresses the necessity of using upland sites less influenced by the hydrological regime to accurately reconstruct larch sawfly defoliation events. We found that where investigations are taking place solely in peatlands or lowlands, and where they are heavily influenced by hydrological conditions, the use of other lines of evidence such as pale rings and long-term hydrological records are crucial to understand the dynamics in the system. In our case study, program OUTBREAK identified five defoliation events in a peatland and upland site; however, hydrological data and pale ring evidence indicated that the last event identified in the peatland site by the host/non-host analysis was confounded by hydrological growth suppression.  相似文献
