It has been suggested that birds prefer to use a particular eye while learning to detect cryptic prey and that this eye preference enhances foraging performance. European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) with the left, right, or both eyes available learned to detect inconspicuous cues associated with the presence of hidden prey. Acquisition scores were not significantly different between left and right-eyed birds; however, performance in the binocular condition was significantly higher than in the two monocular conditions. When binocular birds were tested with familiar and unfamiliar cues present simultaneously, the familiar cue was selected significantly more often than the unfamiliar cue, suggesting that the birds were searching for specific cue features. When monocular birds were tested using only the naïve eye, performance dropped significantly. In right-eyed birds using the naïve left eye, performance remained at chance levels over transfer trials. However, left-eyed birds using the naïve right eye had a superior performance compared to the initial acquisition scores of right-eyed birds and also showed a significant improvement in performance over transfer trials. Thus, although there was no direct evidence of lateralization during acquisition, there was unilateral transfer of the prey detection skill from the right to the left hemisphere.  相似文献

Summary The failure of pollen-tube dissolution in the synergid region, with subsequent pollen-tube overgrowth well into the central cell, was observed within embryo sacs following interspecific crosses between Solanum melongena and S. sisymbriifolium and between Lycopersicon esculentum and L. peruvianum. Such pollen-tube hypertrophy (PTH) was examined under fluorescence using both light and confocal microscopy in order to characterize this anomalous pollen-tube behavior and to verify its occurrence within the embryo sac central cell. Three genetically unrelated L. esculentum cultivars (Peto 95, Apex 1000, Nagcarlang) were utilized as the female parents in interspecific pollinations with L. peruvianum accession LA 1708, and seed set was obtained from all crosses. It was observed that PTH was not a rare event in these crosses, with the proportion of PTH ranging from 2.6% to 6.5% of all ovules examined. Self-pollinated controls revealed zero (e.g., Nagcarlang) to extremely low (<0.01%) frequencies (Apex 1000 and Peto 95). The differences in frequencies suggests that the specific genotypes of the parents has an affect on the occurrence of successful pollen-tube dissolution and sperm-nuclei transfer. Pollen-tube hypertrophy represents a poorly understood, though easily identified, form of fertilization failure occurring within the ovule. Its conspicuous nature, along with a relatively high frequency of occurrence in certain crossing combinations, should provide a valuable opportunity to better study the nature of such fertilization failures in angiosperms.  相似文献

In a previous study, we demonstrated that iptakalim (Ipt) significantly ameliorated hypolocomotion and catalepsy induced by haloperidol and rotenone in rats. In order to further understand the mechanism(s), using a rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD) established by unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) administration to the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and reverse microdialysis techniques with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), we investigated the effects of Ipt on extracellular levels of glutamate, dopamine (DA) and its metabolite dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) in the striatum of conscious and freely moving rats. The results indicated that unilateral 6-OHDA-lesioned rats have a significantly higher level of extracellular glutamate and a lower level of extracellular DOPAC in the lesioned-side of the striatum, and a lower level of extracellular DA in both sides of the striatum compared to the striatum of control rats. Ipt reduced extracellular glutamate levels in both sides of striatum of the lesioned and control rats in a concentration-dependent manner. Ipt, at lower concentrations (0.01, 0.1, 1 microM), enhanced extracellular DA levels in the lesioned-side striatum of the unilateral 6-OHDA-lesioned rats, while causing no significant changes in the intact side striatum, and even a significant decline in striatum of control rats at higher concentrations of Ipt (10, 100 microM). In addition, Ipt also caused a significant decline in the extracellular DOPAC levels in the lesioned-side striatum of unilateral 6-OHDA-lesioned rats. These data suggest that the major mechanism underlying the ameliorative effects of Ipt on the behavior in 6-OHDA-lesioned rats is the alteration of levels of extracellular neurotransmitters, such as glutamate and DA in the striatum of unilateral 6-OHDA-lesioned rats.  相似文献

Quantitative and qualitative alterations of renal oversulfated chondroitin/dermatan sulfates (C/DSs) accompanied by the development of tubulointerstitial nephritis were examined. The rat model with unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) is a suitable model for study of renal interstitial fibrosis, and was utilized in the present study. Cortical regions of serial sections of UUO kidney and sham-operated kidney on glass slides were processed using a small surgical knife under dark field microscopy. Oversulfated C/DSs in tissue sections on a glass slide were degraded to unsaturated disaccharides using chondroitinase ABC and ACII digestion in the presence of bacterial collagenase. The resulting unsaturated disaccharides were subsequently determined by HPLC. These in situ investigations yielded the following results: (1) marked increases in oversulfated C/DSs content and decreases in the oversulfation degree of C/DSs were observed in fibrous lesions, compared to non-fibrous lesions, and (2) iduronic acid content in C/DSs in fibrous lesions was significantly lower than that in non-fibrous lesions. These findings indicate that oversulfated C/DSs with low-iduronic acid content represent a potential marker for tubulointerstitial nephritis.  相似文献

Diploid potato clones with 2n-pollen formation by first-division restitution without crossing-over (FDR-NCO) are ideal testers to estimate the breeding value of elite 4x cultivars by virtue of transmitting their genotypes practically intact to their progenies. This characteristic facilitates genetic analysis, since meiotic recombination would take place only in the 4x parent and not in the diploid parent. We evaluated (under short-day conditions) families from complete factorial crosses between four 4x cultivars and five 2x(FDR-NCO) clones. Families were compared with two standard 4x cultivars (’Bintje’ and ’Delta’) for total tuber yield (TTY), commercial yield (CY), haulm maturity (HM), plant vigor (PV), plant-top uniformity (PU), eye depth (ED), number of tubers per hill (NTH), and the CY/TTY index (CTI). For TTY, the contrasts family group (310 g/ hill) vs ’Delta’ (430 g/hill) and the family group vs ’Bintje’ (210 g/hill) were significant. Only 25% of the families were different from ’Delta’ and 20% of them outyielded ’Bintje’. For CY, differences were observed between families (240 g/hill) vs ’Delta’ (340 g/hill) and families vs ’Bintje’ (150 g/hill). The two best families had 53% CY over ’Bintje’. Surprisingly, only one family had a higher NTH than ’Bintje’. No differences were observed for HM. Seventy five and 30% of the families had an ED similar to ’Delta’ (ED = 2) and ’Bintje’ (ED = 1), respectively. A multivariate analysis indicated that 63% of the data variability could be explained by two factors. TTY, CY, and PV had high loading on the first factor, whereas ED, PU and HM had high loading on the second factor; CTI and NTH had equal sizes on both factors. High TTY and PV were associated with high NTH and CTI. Deep eye, PU, and late maturity were associated with high NTH and reduced CTI. The distributions of factor scores of the entries indicated that some 2x parents had strong influences (irrespective of the direction of their effects) on the crosses. Six crosses due to two 2x males were in the ’Bintje’ quarter with negative scores for both factors (implying low TTY, poor vigor, and low NTH). Also three crosses due to another 2x clone were distributed in the quarter of positive factor 1 and negative factor 2. These crosses plus another one were in the same quarter of ’Delta’ (implying high yields, low ED, low PU, and early maturity). The FDR-NCO clones provide a homogeneous sample of heterozygous 2n-gametes allowing the unique opportunity to estimate the relative contribution of the random meiotic products (from the 4x parents) and the ’somatic’ 2x genome for the phenotypic expression of quantitative traits. The interesting result was that measurable effects (favorable or not) on the data variability were mainly determined by the genomic contribution of the haploid-species hybrids. Three out of five 2x-male parents showed rather strong effects on progenies. No such effects were observed on the four 4x-female parents. In each of two experiments, heifers were assigned to a control group and a unilaterally ablated (UA) group (n = 6/group). In the UA group, follicles ≥ 4 mm in the left ovary were ablated by transvaginal ultrasound-guided technique at Hour 0 (8:00 AM) on the day of ovulation. Follicles in the CL-bearing right ovary remained intact. In Experiment 1, ablations continued until the next ovulation, and new follicles emerged in the right ovary in 9 of 14 (64%) waves. The number of follicles/wave (combined, 6.4 ± 0.4) did not differ between groups. In Experiment 2, follicles were counted at Hours 0, 4, 8, 12, and 24; the resistance index (RI) for blood flow in the ovarian pedicle was determined at Hours 0 and 12; and blood samples were collected every hour from Hours 0 to 12 and at Hour 24. An increase (P < 0.05) in the number of follicles in the follicle-intact ovary began at Hour 4 with complete compensation by Hour 24. Concentrations of FSH did not change between Hours 0 and 24 in the UA group but decreased (P < 0.05) in the controls by Hour 7. At Hour 12, RI to the right ovary approached being lower (P < 0.06) in the UA group than in the control group. Results indicated that unilateral ablation of follicles ≥ 4 mm led to compensatory follicle response in the follicle-intact ovary, and initially circulatory FSH concentrations were maintained and blood flow to the follicle-intact ovary increased.  相似文献

Obstruction of the kidney may affect native or transplanted kidneys and results in kidney injury and scarring. Presented here is a model of obstructive nephropathy induced by unilateral ureteric obstruction (UUO), which can either be irreversible (UUO) or reversible (R-UUO). In the irreversible UUO model, the ureter may be obstructed for variable periods of time in order to induce increasingly severe renal inflammation and interstitial fibrotic scarring. In the reversible R-UUO model the ureter is obstructed to induce hydronephrosis, tubular dilation and inflammation. After a suitable period of time the ureteric obstruction is then surgically reversed by anastomosis of the severed previously obstructed ureter to the bladder in order to allow complete decompression of the kidney and restoration of urinary flow to the bladder. The irreversible UUO model has been used to investigate various aspects of renal inflammation and scarring including the pathogenesis of disease and the testing of potential anti-inflammatory or anti-fibrotic therapies. The more challenging model of R-UUO has been used by some investigators and does offer significant research potential as it allows the study of inflammatory and immune processes and tissue remodeling in an injured and scarred kidney following the removal of the injurious stimulus. As a result, the R-UUO model offers investigators the opportunity to explore the resolution of kidney inflammation together with key aspects of tissue repair. These experimental models are of relevance to human disease as patients often present with obstruction of the renal tract that requires decompression and are commonly left with significant residual kidney impairment that has no current treatment options and may lead to eventual end stage kidney failure.  相似文献

 Since Darwinian times considerable knowledge has accumulated on the distribution, physiology and genetics of self-incompatibility (SI) in higher plants. In the second half of this century the first attempts were made to identify the biochemical bases of SI. These included thediscovery that cutinase enables pollen tube penetration at the surface* of the stigma in Cruciferae, sorting of segregation pollen S-phenotypes by serological techniques, a lock-and-key model of the SI reaction, the first detection and characterisation of SI proteins and the discovery of the role of the tapetum in the determination of pollen phenotypes in homomorphic sporophytic SI. This pioneering work was followed by a worldwide effort to identify and understand the cellular and molecular processes which lead to the recognition and rejection of SI pollen. The present review article summarizes briefly the current state of knowledge in areas essential for the understanding and exploitation of SI and outlines new information that has become available during recent years.
