We studied the physical and temporal isolation of two arthropod guilds interacting with Drosera anglica Huds., a terrestrial carnivorous plant. Flowers are separated from basal trap leaves by a leafless stalk. Since arthropods are potentially employed both as prey and pollinators, we asked whether separation of traps from flowers reduces the frequency with which flower visitors are captured by the leaves. Plants captured prey throughout the season, with peak trapping activity occurring before flowering began. The diverse prey spectrum included at least 109 species in 94 genera in 26 of 37 identified families representing 11 arthropod orders. The most common prey were adult flies of Nematocera, particularly Ceratopogonidae (50%) and Chironomidae (42%). The following taxa were periodically abundant: Acarina, Diptera–Cecidomyiidae, Chloropidae, Sciaridae, Hemiptera nymphs and Thysanoptera–Thripidae. Flies (Diptera) were chief flower visitors (95%), dominated by Syrphidae (66%), Bombyliidae and Muscidae (10% each), Calliphoridae (7%), Tachinidae and Dolichopodidae (3% each). Additionally, visitors were a bee (Hymenoptera–Halictidae) and thrips (Thysanoptera–Thripidae). Four families were common to both guilds: Diptera–Dolichopodidae, Muscidae, Tachinidae; and Thysanoptera–Thripidae. However, direct comparisons of identified taxa within these families showed that overlap between flower visitors and prey occurred for Thrips sp. larvae alone, which comprised only 3% of all flower visitors and 0.5% of prey. Abstract.
- 1 Generalist predators are repelled by chrysomelid (Chrysomela spp., Phratora vitellinue L.) larval defensive secretions that are obtained from salicin in their host plants. But little is known about the effect of these secretions on specialist predators.
- 2 In this study, we describe the feeding behaviour of a fly, Parasyrphus melanderi Curran (Diptera: Syrphidae), which feeds on Chrysomela aeneicollis Schaeffer (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Parasyrphus melanderi lays its eggs on C.aeneicollis egg clutches, and its larvae consume C.aeneicollis eggs and larvae.
- 3 Chrysomela aeneicollis hatching rates were significantly lower (20%) on clutches with fly eggs than on clutches without them (40%). Half of the clutches with one fly egg had survival rates below 5%, and when two fly eggs were present (four clutches), the entire clutch was consumed.
- 4 In nature, P.melanderi eggs were 3 times more abundant on a salicylaterich willow species S.orestera Schneider, than on the medium-salicylate S.geyeriana Anderss. (1.8 v 0.6 eggs per clutch). On 18% of the S.orestera clones, all the beetle clutches contained fly eggs. In laboratory-choice tests, P.melanderi larvae fed equally rapidly on C.aeneicollis larvae that were chemically defended (feeding on S.orestera) as on larvae that produced no secretion (feeding on the salicylate-poor S.lutea Nutt.). This predator does not appear to be deterred by C.aeneicollis's defensive secretion. We discuss the implications of specialist predators on determining host suitability to herbivorous insects.

We review progress toward developing a data-analysis system using invertebrate species lists in wetland evaluation procedures. Species lists for Mollusca, Carabidae (Coleoptera), Empidoidea and Syrphidae (Diptera), derived from samples collected at six stations along a transect established at a site on the floodplain of the River Loire (France) provide the raw data. An initial analysis using a traditional ordination method (Correspondence Analysis) is carried out. A data base was established for the 118 mollusc, carabid and syrphid species recorded, and each species was then treated not as a simple integer, but as an amalgam of digitised attributes deemed responsive to wetland conditions, in a correspondence analysis on instrumental variables. Despite the generalized nature of the attributes as defined for this example, the approach demonstrates a marked increase in interpretability of the output of analysis, in respect of the relation between the species and the floodplain environment. It also highlights the value of use of data pertaining to more than one taxonomic group and of selecting these taxonomic groups on the basis of complementarity of their bioindicator potential.Corresponding Editor: J.T.A. The lettuce aphid, Nasonovia ribisnigri Mosley, was accidentally introduced into California from Europe during the late 1990s and soon became an economic pest of Romaine lettuce along California’s central coast region. Indigenous syrphid larvae attack the lettuce aphid and are believed to be effective in the management of this invasive pest, although there have been no studies on the capacity of the syrphid larvae to kill and consume lettuce aphids. We focused on four syrphid species commonly found in central coast lettuce fields: Allograpta obliqua (Say), Eupeodes fumipennis (Thomson), Sphaerophoria sulphuripes (Thomson), and Toxomerus marginatus (Say). Laboratory feeding experiments were conducted to estimate the development times of all juvenile stages, the daily growth rate of larvae, the number of third instar aphids killed, the aphid biomass killed, and the aphid biomass consumed as measures of predator performance. Results show that during larval development E. fumipennis killed the most third-instar aphids (507 aphids, 88 mg biomass killed) and reached the largest size, followed by A. obliqua (228 aphids, 39 mg killed), S. sulphuripes (194 aphids, 31 mg killed) and T. marginatus (132 aphids, 20 mg killed). Body size alone did not account for species differences in per-capita larval consumption rates. This information is discussed in relation to the predation potential of syrphids through the short cropping cycle of lettuce, and the choice of plant species to use for floral resource provisioning to enhance the activity of syrphids needed for effective management of lettuce aphids in California’s central coast fields. 相似文献

Predator foraging behaviour affects the outcome of enemy–enemy interactions. Using a combination of fieldwork and laboratory experiments, we show that intraguild predation may be important in the field distribution of generalist predators that share a common prey: the eggs (and larvae) of the leaf beetle Phratora vulgatissima, a major insect pest in coppicing willow plantations. We focused on a species from the hoverfly genus Parasyrphus (Syrphidae), which may exhibit large temporal and spatial variation in density. Predator and prey densities were quantified in 40 field plots in willow plantations. The likelihood of finding hoverfly eggs declined with increasing densities of two predatory mirids, Orthotylus marginalis and Closterotomus fulvomaculatus, which exhibit less mobile behaviour similar to that of hoverfly larvae. The density of a more mobile predatory bug species, the anthocorid Anthocoris nemorum, was not associated with hoverfly occurrence. These results corroborate the hypothesis that less mobile predators should be stronger intraguild predators than mobilepredators. Further partial support for this hypothesis was obtained in the laboratory study where individual predators were presented with clutches of P. vulgatissima eggs containing one hoverfly egg: the less mobile C. fulvomaculatus and O. marginalis tended to consume the hoverfly egg more readily than the more mobile A. nemorum. However, most individuals of all three bug species consumed the egg of the potential competitor – the syrphid – within 24 h. The field study also showed that hoverfly occurrence was positively associated with the density of their prey and with the presence of nearby forests. We conclude that intraguild predation, abundance of prey and the surrounding habitat affect the distribution of hoverflies in this system and should be considered when developing biological control methods. 相似文献
