The effects of disturbance on forest structure and diversity along an altitudinal gradient in the temperate, sub-tropical, and tropical regions of Garhwal Himalaya were assessed. Each region was further categorized into undisturbed (UD), mildly disturbed (MD), and highly disturbed (HD) sites on the basis of magnitude of disturbance in these forests. On UD sites of temperate, sub-tropical and tropical regions, Quercus leucotrichophora, Anogeissus latifolia and Holoptelea integrifolia were the dominant tree species respectively. The highest values of tree density (1028 ind*hm-2) and total basal cover at breast height (31.70 m2 *hm-2) were recorded for UD site of temperate region, whereas maximum species diversity (3.128) and equitability (14.09) values were observed for HD site of tropical region. The structure and composition of the forests were greatly affected by the degree of disturbance.  相似文献

The structure and function of Shisham (Dalbergia sissoo Roxb.) forests were investigated in relation to nutrient dynamics in 5- to 15-year-old stands growing in central Himalaya. Nutrient concentrations and storage in different layers of vegetation were in the order: tree > shrub > herb. Forest soil, litter and vegetation accounted for 80.1-91.9, 1.0-1.5 and 7.0-18.4%, respectively, of the total nutrients in the system. There were considerable reductions (trees 32.8-43.1; shrubs 26.2-32.4; and herbs 18-8-22-2%) in nutrient concentrations of leaves during senescence. Nutrient uptake by the vegetation as a whole and also by the different components, with and without adjustment for internal recycling, was investigated. Annual transfer of litter nutrients to the soil from vegetation was 74.8-108.4 kg ha(-1) year(-1) N, 56.8-4 kg ha(-1) year(-1) P and 38.7-46.9 kg ha(-1) year(-1) K. Turnover rate and time for different nutrients ranged between 56 and 66 % year(-1) and 1.5 and 1.8 years, respectively. The turnover rate of litter indicates that over 50% of nutrients in litter on the forest floor are released, which ultimately enhances the productivity of the forest stand. The nutrient use efficiency in Shisham forests ranged from 136 to 143 kg ha(-1) year(-1) for N, 1,441 to 1,570 kg ha(-1) year(-1) for P and 305 to 311 kg ha(-1) year(-1) for K. Compared with natural oak forest (265 kg ha(-1) year(-1) and an exotic eucalypt plantation (18 kg ha(-1) year(-1), a higher proportion of nutrients was retranslocated in Shisham forests, largely because of higher leaf tissue nutrient concentrations. This indicates a lower nutrient use efficiency of Shisham compared with eucalypt and oak. Compartment models for nutrient dynamics have been developed to represent the distribution of nutrients pools and net annual fluxes within the system.  相似文献

Four field studies of the langur monkey, Presbytis entellus, living in the Himalaya are compared, in order to uncover shared features of behavior and population structure that may be related to this habitat. Shared demographic characteristics include seasonality in mating and births, predominately multi-male troops at least during some times of the year, relatively large home ranges, low population densities with few intertroop encounters, and seasonal utilization of home ranges with distance maintenance between groups. Shared social characteristics include behavioral buffers against cold and inclement weather, fluctuation in male membership with greatest instability and lowest numbers during the mating season, a vocal repertoire marked by a unique vocalization of major importance in troop maintenance as well as alterations in the function of species-typical vocalizations, and variations in sexual behavior including variable expression of “typical” female headshake present, increased male initiation of sexual activity and a low incidence of female harrassment of sexual consorts. It is argued that while no single feature may be unique to Himalayan langur populations, the total cluster of features is, and can be related to climatic seasonality in the Himalayan temperate environment, the predominance of a multi-male group structure for some periods, and possibly genetic isolation.  相似文献

Properties of the top 30 cm of soil under plantations of 1-yr to 8-yr old Eucalyptus (the hybrid E. tereticornis) and in adjacent natural mixed broad-leaved forest were compared in the sub-tropical zone of the central Himalaya. Various soil-physical characteristics decreased with increasing age; soil-chemical properties, notably organic carbon, total N, P and K decreased as a result of reforestation with Eucalyptus and further decreased with increasing age of the plantation.  相似文献

Grass fallow shifting cultivation is an important land use practice in the highlands of Bhutan. Part of the nutrient pool contained in soil organic matter is made available for the traditional buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) crop through a highly labor intensive system exposing 250–500 MT soil ha−1 to temperatures of 500°C and above. Dry topsoil is collected in mounds and burned using plant biomass or manure and soil organic matter as fuel. Labor input ranged from 150–401 days ha−1 with land preparation accounting for 65–85% of the total requirement. The burning increased soil pH from 6.0 to 6.9 and available K from 34 to 69 mg kg−1. Soil organic C and total N were reduced from 3.3 and 0.17% to 0.8 and 0.08%, respectively. Release of P from soil organic matter and plant material and reduction in C/N ratio resulting in increased N availability are considered the most essential effects required for good crop yields. Through the burning about 16 MT of C and 470 kg N ha−1 are released into the atmosphere. Fallow periods of 15–20 years are required for the system to be sustainable. The photosynthetic characteristics of a giant alpine plant, Rheum nobile Hook. f. et Thoms. and of some other alpine species were studied in situ at 4300 m, in the Eastern Himalaya, Nepal, during the summer monsoon season. Although rainy and overcast weather was predominant, the daytime photon flux density (400–700 nm) ranged from 300 to 500 mol quanta m-2 s-1. Under such conditions, the temperature of leaves of R. nobile ranged from 10 to 14°C, and the rate of photosynthetic CO2 exchange ranged from 10 to 16 mol CO2 m-2 s-1. The ratios of the maximum rate of photosynthetic CO2 fixation to leaf nitrogen content (defined as instantaneous nitrogen-use efficiency, NUE) for the Himalayan forbs that were examined in situ were similar to the NUE values reported for lowland herbaceous species examined under lowland conditions. In contrast to the common belief, theoretical calculations indicate that the decrease in the rate of photosynthesis due to low atmospheric pressure is small. These Himalayan forbs appeared to overcome this small disadvantage by increasing stomatal conductance. Suppression of photosynthesis caused by blockage of stomata by raindrops appeared to be avoided by either of two mechanisms: plants had large hypostomatous leaves that expanded horizontally or they had obliquely oriented amphistomatous leaves without bundle sheath extensions. All these observations indicate that the gas-exchange characteristics of alpine forbs in the Eastern Himalaya are adapted to the local wet and humid monsoon conditions and thus photosynthetic rates attained during the monsoon period are similar to those of lowland plants.  相似文献

Soil samples collected from two hot springs, Soldhar and Ringigad, both located in the Garhwal region of Uttaranchal Himalaya were analysed for their physical, chemical and microbial components. The alkaline pH, total absence of carbon and nitrogen, and high temperature were features common to soil samples from both sites. The Soldhar samples contained higher amounts of Cu, Fe and Mn. Ringigad soil was devoid of Cu, but had much higher phosphate. While the optimum incubation temperature for isolating the maximum microbial counts from soil samples from the two sites was 50 degrees C, microbial growth in broth was also observed when incubated at 80 degrees C. Microscopic examination revealed three types of microbial populations, i.e., bacteria, yeast and filamentous organisms. The soil samples were found to be dominated by spore forming rods. Out of 58 aerobic isolates, 53 were gram positive bacilli. Gram positive anaerobic oval rods were also observed up to 60 degrees C. Soil dilution plates revealed the presence of antagonistic and phosphate solubilizing populations.  相似文献

High mountains around the globe are some of the most vulnerable ecosystems to climate change and of great concern for conservation. The Himalayan Mountains are experiencing a higher warming than average global warming, which can significantly impact their biodiversity, vegetation distribution and ecosystem structure. There is a need to study the process of wood formation in Himalayan conifers to have a better understanding of their growth responses to predicted climate change. Variations in the climatic factors regulating cambial activity would result in changes in the timing of cambial phenology. In this study, the variations in the timing of different stages of cambial phenology (cell enlargement stage, wall-thickening stage and cell maturation stages) in pindrow fir (Abies pindrow) were investigated from anatomical observations of wood microcores collected during 2014-15 along an elevation range of c.2300−3000 m asl in the north-western Himalaya. The onset of all three cambial phenological stages was significantly correlated with elevation, with onset of cambial activity happening more than a week earlier at the lowest elevation than at the highest elevation site. Although the termination of wall-thickening and maturation stage appeared minimally related to elevation, the cell-enlargement stage showed significant correlation with elevation, with tracheid formation ceasing approximately three weeks earlier in trees at the highest elevation. The timing of these phenological stages did not show strong variations between the two study years. Our findings provide new data on the timings of cambial phenophases and help to understand tree growth response to ongoing changing climate in the Himalayan region.  相似文献

Large acanthomorphic acritarchs have been previously reported from the Ediacaran successions of the Pachmunda and Krol Hill synclines in the Outer Krol Belt of Lesser Himalaya, India. Thin sections of chert from Krol ‘A’ Formation in Khanog and Rajgarh synclines, Outer Krol Belt, record an equally well developed and diversified assemblage of Ediacaran large acanthomorphic acritarchs. This assemblage contains specimens belonging to seven genera and ten species, identified as: Appendisphaera fragilis, A. grandis, Asterocapsoides sp. A, Asterocapsoides sp. B, Cavaspina acuminata, C. basiconica, Eotylotopalla dactylos, Knollisphaeridium sp., Papillomembrana sp., and Weissiella cf. grandistella. It also contains five unnamed forms, viz. A, B, C, D, and E. The Krol acritarch assemblage shows a close resemblance with the Upper Doushantuo or Tanarium anozosTanarium conoideum assemblage of China. However, the absence of biostratigraphically important markers such as Tanarium anozos and T. conoideum from the Krol assemblage, so far, makes it difficult to establish a definite biostratigraphic correlation between the two assemblages. The current observations from this new locality provide additional data for regional and global biostratigraphic correlation, and significantly increase the purview of Ediacaran sequences for global biostratigraphic zonation.  相似文献

Low density occurrence of large carnivore species and direct hunting of predators and prey make carnivore conservation complex. Vital baseline information on population status of large carnivores is still deficient in most forests of eastern Himalaya, which are known to be the biodiversity hotspots. To fill this information gap, we estimated the large carnivore population status and abundance in an intricate eastern Himalayan lowland tropical forest in Pakke Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh. Population status and abundance estimates of tigers and leopards were made through individual identification using closed capture-recapture sampling. To estimate the dhole abundance photographic encounter rate was used. For individually non-identifiable species photographic rate seemed to correlate well with animal abundance. The estimated tiger and leopard density through 1/2 MMDM was 2.14 ± 0.04/100 km2 and 2.99 ± 1.13/100 km2 respectively. Maximum likelihood estimates shows density of tiger 1.86 ± 0.7 and for leopard 2.82 ± 1.2.The estimated dhole abundance was (N) 10.6 ± 0.94, and density 6.62 ± 0.58 individuals in 100 km2. Further, occupancy estimation of large carnivores may be tried along with assessing the comparative efficacy of other population estimation methods to establish better monitoring methods for this region.  相似文献
