Summary The genetic determination of heterostyly is briefly reviewed and experimental data are presented on the inheritance of tristyly in Oxalis compressa. It is shown that the model appropriate to Lythrum salicaria, of two diallelic loci, is inadequate to explain segregation patterns found in O. compressa, especially the reversal of dominance of the short phenotype. An extended model having an additional allele at the short locus, and a separate modifier gene, is presented and its deterministic genotype frequency dynamics examined numerically. It is shown that fixation of these extra genes or alleles is unlikely. Problems of testing the extended model are considered.

Heterostyly is clearly confirmed inAconogonon campanulatum. This distylous species is dimorphic for tepals, styles, stigma surface, stamens, pollen grain size, and pollen sexine ornamentation. The floral shape is campanulate and thrum flowers are slightly larger than pin flowers. Small solitary bees were observed as flower visitors and probably effected pollination. The possible evolution of dioecy via heterostyly within the genusAconogonon is discussed.

As heterostyly and self incompatibility are linked in tristylous L. salicaria, all cross-compatible pollinations – those between anthers and styles of the same level – should produce viable seed. The rigor of this theory was tested using seed set and germination of cross-compatible pollinations in 18 naturalized L. salicaria populations in Minnesota/Wisconsin (n=342 genotypes; n=86 shorts, n=127 mids, and n=129 longs). Seed set for short-styled genotypes ranged from zero to 135 (36+38); mids–0–156, (53+39), and longs–0–151 (59+39). Mean seed set per capsule was not significantly different for mids and longs, but both were significantly greater than that of shorts (F=14, P<0.0001). Zero seed set frequently occurred in most compatible crosses, in contrast with theoretical expectations. The high percentage of populations deviating from normality must be due to incompatibility. An incompatibility system independent of heterostyly could cause this, where failed crosses result from matches of incompatibility specificities in pollen and pistil. This independence is questionable, however, given the non-significant difference in failed outcrosses for pooled χ2 comparing within and between populations (χ2=0.395, P>0.5). A sporophytic incompatibility model is proposed with a minimum of three specificities. Zero seed set in compatible crosses is due to the addition of alleles from L. alatum, a distylous species that forms introgressive hybrids with L. salicaria. Reduced fecundity could increase the deficiency of shorts, and significantly greater seed germination of shorts could explain the continued presence of short-styled individuals in L. salicaria populations. Turnera hermannioides is a ruderal distylic subshrub, native to NE-Brazil. In the Catimbau National Park, situated within the semi-arid Caatinga region, we studied the pollination ecology of this species, emphasizing (1) effective pollinators; (2) characteristics of short- and long-styled flowers; (3) intra- and intermorph pollen flow; and (4) fruit and seed set. Short and long-styled morphs differ in pollen size and ornamentation, stigmatic surface, style and stamen length and nectar production. The flowers are obligate intermorphic outcrossers and depend on animals for pollination. The flowers of T. hermannioides attracted insect visitors of 25 species, among them butterflies, beetles, but mainly bees. Polylectic bees, such as Apis mellifera, stingless bees, and solitary Callonychium brasiliense were the most frequent visitors and the principal pollinators. The frequency of visits, however, was very low (on average 1.9 visits/flower/day), resulting in a low and unbalanced legitimate pollen flow, i.e. a much lower number of pollen grains from short-styled flowers reaching stigmas of long-styles than vice versa, which in turn compromised fruit and seed set. Surprisingly, Protomeliturga catimbaui and P. turnerae, both oligolectic on flowers of the Turneraceae-clade of the Passifloraceae s.l., were very rare flower visitors and did not contribute significantly to the pollination of Turnera hermannioides. We discuss how the low visitation rate and the inefficiency of pollinators (i.e. inefficiency in promoting legitimate pollination) compromise pollen flow and, consequently, fruit and seed set in this species.
